To better understand the possible functions of personal interstices layered between institutional goal-oriented talk, this study examines instances of self-disclosure that emerged from 34 hours of authentic interactions recorded at three Canadian workplaces. In solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), deletion sequences are generated at each addition of amino acid due to non-quantitative coupling reactions. Their concentration increases exponentially with the length of the peptide chain, and after many cycles not only do they represent a large proportion of the crude preparation, but they can also exhibit physicochemical characteristics similar to the target sequence. Thus, these deletion-sequence contaminants present major problems for removal, or even detection. In general, purification of synthetic peptides by conventional chromatography is based on hydrophobicity differences (using RP-HPLC) and charge differences (using ion-exchange chromatography). For short sequences, the use of one or both techniques is in general sufficient to obtain a product with high purity. However, on increasing the number of amino acid residues, the peptide secondary and progressively tertiary and quaternary structures begin to play an important role and the conformation of the largest peptides can decisively affect their retention behaviour. Furthermore, very closely related impurities such as deletion sequences lacking one or few residues can be chromatographically indistinguishable from the target sequence. Therefore, purification of large synthetic peptides is a complex and time-consuming task that requires the use of several separation techniques with the inevitable dramatic reduction in yields of the final material. Permanent termination (capping) of unreacted chains using a large excess of an acylating agent after each coupling step prevents the formation of deletion sequences and generates N-truncated peptides. However, even under these more favourable conditions, separation of the target sequence from chromatographically similar N-capped polypeptides requires extensive purification. If the target sequence could be specifically and transiently labelled so that the resulting product were selectively recognized by a specific stationary phase, then separation from impurities should be facilitated. This chapter deals with such an approach and in particular with the purification of large polypeptides, assembled by solid phase strategy, using lipophilic and biotin-based 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) chromatographic probes. Assuming that the formation of deletion sequences is prevented by capping unreacted chains, a reciprocal strategy can be applied that involves functional protection of all polymer-supported peptide chains that are still growing, with a specially chosen affinity reagent or chromatographic probe.

This chapter explores how students' private concerns came to occupy the center of campus and national politics in the 1960s and in so doing thrust higher education into the thick of the nascent rights revolution. Students' rights-based reconstruction of the educated citizen marked a departure from the older reciprocal-based formulation that had been decisive in the creation of past higher education policy. From the 1930s through the 1950s, the state provided citizens with educational opportunities in order to repay them for their sacrifices during the Great Depression and the brutal war years that followed. But the gradual expansion of educational access and of federal involvement in higher education set in motion a sequence of unexpected social and political reactions that prepared the way for the shift from a reciprocal to a rights-based conception of the educated citizen founded on the principle of diversity.

Commercially cultivated vanilla (V. planifolia) is native to Mexico and its cultivation and breeding programmes face major bottlenecks. This study reports presence of important agronomic characters in two important and endangered species of Vanilla, V. aphylla and V. pilifera, indigenous to India. V. aphylla was tolerant to Fusarium wilt and had longer flower life than the cultivated vanilla. V. pilifera flowers were fragrant, showed signs of insect pollination and had large fruit size. The species were amenable to interspecific hybridization and successful reciprocal crosses were done. Sequence similarity studies indicated the clustering of leafy and leafless species separately.

Using server log data to predict the URLs that a user is likely to visit is an important research area in user behavior prediction. In this paper, a predictive model (called LAR) based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) attention network and reciprocal-nearest-neighbors supported clustering algorithm (RSC) for predicting the URL is proposed. First, the LSTM-attention network is used to predict the URL categories a user might visit, and the RSC algorithm is then used to cluster users. Subsequently, the URLs belonging to the same category are determined from the user clusters to predict the URLs that the user might visit. The proposed LAR model considers the time sequence of the user access URL, and the relationship between a single user and group users, which effectively improves the prediction accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that the LAR model is feasible and effective for user behavior prediction. The accuracy of the mean absolute error and root mean square error of the LAR model are better than those of the other models compared in this study.

This chapter focuses on ancient ideas of theurgy. From the uses of the term in the ancient evidence, “theurgy” may be defined as the art or practice of ritually creating a connection between the mortal, material world that is before one's eyes and the unseen, immortal world of the gods. Such a practice may be a lifelong assimilation of the individual soul to the divine, or it may be a momentary activation of the connection with divine power to achieve some more immediate end on earth. Whereas normative religious action in the Greco-Roman world tends to involve just the human worshipper and the divine god in a sequence of reciprocal responses, theurgy, as it appears in the ancient evidence, attempts to bring the divine and mortal together, uniting the divine power with the human worshipper. This process of unification involves connecting elements of the cosmos at every level of being, from the lowest dregs of inanimate matter through the animal and human living creatures and up to the various kinds of divinities, including the very highest. Ultimately, theurgy appears as magic, labeled as an “extraordinary ritual practice,” whether in a positive or negative sense.
