Full textThis dissertation aims to deal with some particular questions about ius militare, namely the specific ius singulare, which regulated the condition of Roman soldiers and veterans from the age of Augustus. In particular, the study focuses solely on the rules regulating the condition of milites and veterans in the period of the Roman Principate. The research is divided into four parts. In the first part there is a short description of the institutional history of the Roman army, from the reform of Caius Marius up to the interventions of Augustus in military affairs. With regard to the Augustan military reform, I have concentrated first on the creation of the professional military service and, secondly, on the foundation of the awards of discharge (the so-called praemia militiae) and of the aerarium militare (namely the treasury that would specifically finance the praemia). In the second part, I examine the rules pertaining to the procedure of recruitment and the conditions of access to the different units of the Roman army, namely the legions, the auxiliary units, the Praetorian Guard, the urban cohorts, the vigiles, the equites singulares Augusti, and the praetorian and provincial classes. In addition to the physical and legal requirements, necessary for access to these units, I examine in depth the status civitatis that was conferred to the milites of some units (in particular the classiarii of praetorian classes and the equites singulares Augusti), at the moment of their enrolment in the military. The third part examines a very controversial issue, namely the marriage ban for the soldiers. Following a detailed examination of the different opinions on this question, my dissertation investigates some complex issues which are still to be resolved, clarifying that the ban, certainly introduced befor Claudius, was withdrawn only by Septimius Severus in 197 AD. Furthermore, the research deals with two other related matters: namely, the legal status of the relationships maintained by the soldiers with the women that they met during the service, and, the condition of the children conceived in these relationships. As far as the latter is concerned, I particularly concentrate on the content of the well-known epistula of Hadrian to Ramnius Martialis, which conferred to the children of some milites (in particular those of the legionaries) the bonorum possessio unde cognati. In the fourth and last part, I examine the issue of the privileges conferred to the veterans and their families upon discharge. The research focuses on the analysis of the formularies of diplomata militaria, namely the documents delivered upon the honesta missio (the honorable discharge) to the auxiliares, to the classiarii of the praetorian and provincial fleet, to the praetorians, to the urbaniciani and to the equites singulares Augusti. The examination of their formularies has allowed us to clarify the specific legal condition of the veterans from these different military units. Furthermore, the study on diplomata proposes other thorny questions: firstly it must be understood why they, apart from some exceptional cases, were never delivered to the veterans of iustae legiones. The dissertation ends with a research on the legal nature of the so-called leges veteranorum, namely the constitutiones on the basis of the delivery of each diploma. In this regard, the study attempts to identify the reason why the leges veteranorum concerning the auxiliaries, the classiarii, and the equites singulares Augusti, are different from those of the praetorians and of the urbaniciani, also as regards their diplomatic structure.

Full textThis work is focused on blood donors. This research’s purpose is the discussion of the blood donation’s phenomenon in order to grasp the complexity of plural variables affecting this gesture, the significance of personal, family and organizational action related gifts. The research starts by the revision of the Transtheoretical Model by Prochaska and colleagues (1982) on blood donation (Ferguson, 1996, Ferguson and Chandler, 2005) and the Volunteer Process Model by Omoto and Snyder (1995; 2000). The donation action has been studied as a process: by the approach, the birth of Role Identity of donor (Piliavin et al., 1999), the rhythmic repetition of the gesture, and therefore loyalty. Participants are wide and varied: the first studies focus, in fact, on neodonors; the third study compares neodonors and retained donors, the fourth study, is focused on Retained donors. The thesis is composed by four research studies. The first study’s aim is to identify genders of people on the basis of the variables of the Stages of Change Scale. It shows how the subjects who donate cannot be considered as a homogeneous group considering their "readiness" to donate. It is evident, then, the need of building strategies for different reception. The second study develops a model of the explanatory factors determining the predisposition to donate blood in neodonors will. The third study confirms the influence of the family to engage in this act, and explores the motivations that substained this act. The fourth study shows clearly, maybe for the first time, the role of organizational variables in influencing not only the integration in Avis, but also the perceived satisfaction for the act of donation. The blood donation, in spite of being a personal choice action, derives from a constellation of personal variables, complementary and mutually intersecting. this complex systems here studied in its entirety in order to create more proper recruitment and maintaining strategies that can lead to the total satisfaction of blood supply needs.

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of some strategic resources that allow organizational survival and improvement. The thesis is divided into three papers and the fil rouge is the use of experimental design as research methodology. Recognizing creativity as a strategic competence and a measure of individual or team performance, the first paper compares the effect of three leadership styles – transformational, transactional and laissez-faire – on individual creativity, thus showing which leadership behavior is the most suitable for enhancing it. Positive and negative moods are included in the research design as mediators and individual intrinsic motivation is included as moderator. The second paper is an extension of the first one and investigates the same relationships at a team level of analysis. Furthermore, not only leaders are relevant for the organizations, but followers too. Talents are the life-bloods of organizations and their behaviours have to be detected for attracting them, but also for retaining and managing them. The third paper untangles the job seekers’ behaviors in looking for a job and choosing a company rather than another one basing their choice on the screening of social media and social network pages.

This doctoral thesis aims to delve into one of the most neglected aspects in the historiography of Spain’s relationship with the First World War, which is the participation of Spaniards as volunteers in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion. For this, the thesis is structured on the basis of two broad general areas. On the one hand, through a documentary compilation work that includes the incorporation for the first time of an important part of the official sources of the Legion in Aubagne, the thesis aims to advance scientifically in aspects such as the quantification of the Spanish combatants or the percentage of casualties, as well as other aspects that help to describe the profile of the combatants and can help to understand their trajectory, their experience and their motivations. On the other hand, the thesis analyzes the development of attention to Spanish volunteers and their political use, paying special attention to ministerial efforts and the alliadophile nucleus close to liberalism and reformism and with a center of action in Madrid that ended up forming in 1918 the Patronato de Voluntarios Españoles, an organization promoted by José Subirà Puig and that despite its short life undertook an attempt to establish and hegemonize a story about the volunteers in dispute with the discourse prepared from the Catalanist pro-allied sectors. Finally, this doctoral thesis also asks itself about the construction and survival of a memory about those combatants and their use, not without its vicissitudes, in the attempts to rewrite the past of Spain and Catalonia during the First World War from the immediate postwar period to present days. With all this, it is intended to offer a broad vision that helps to solve many questions so far pending answer and a better understanding of the complex relationship between armed volunteering and the political and cultural mobilization sustained by some groups in neutral Spain in 1914- 1918.
