Full textUsing the phonological priming paradigm, we studied the dynamics of activation and competition. In a first time, facilitatory priming effects were found with prime-target pairs sharing the first few phonemes. Because, the literature on phonological priming reports very few inhibitory effects, a second set of experiments aimed at identify under which conditions, competition effects can be consistently demonstrated. The results showed that the effectiveness of a prime word to inhibit target word processing depends on the phonological mismatch length between the primes and the targets. Finally, we tried to have a better comprehension in the way in which competition between lexical candidates operates. Manipulating the competitor set size of target words, we reported an inhibitory priming effect only for targets having a small set of competitors. Such a result supports the view of direct competition between lexical candidates

Full textMy thesis focused on the problem of lexical access and spoken word recognition. In a series of experiments carried out with a phonological priming design, we evidenced the stages of activation (under a condition of partial priming) and deactivation (under a condition of full priming) of lexical candidates. We assessed final and initial overlap between prime and target pairs on targets processing. With a unimodal presentation of the items, we obtained a facilitatory effet of both initial and final overlap, whereas with a crossmodal (auditory-visual) paradigm, we obtained a facilitatory effect only for the initial overlap. This suggested that final facilitation is prelexical whereas initial facilitation occurs at a lexical level of processing. Finally, we examined the role of the syllable as a functional unit in the access of spoken words

Full textPhonological assimilation may change the acoustic shape of words according to the influence of surrounding segments. Word recognition has to cope with this systematic variability which characterizes spoken language. Three word-detection experiments in French, English and American English show that listeners use implicit phonological knowledge of the assimilation processes that exist in their language. Moreover, this knowledge of the assimilation independently of the activation of a lexical form, as the same compensation patterns have been observed in words and in non-words. This compensation mechanism shows some flexibility : comparing French and American second language (L2) learners shows that beginners use the phonological system of their native language to compensate for assimilation processes that exist in L2, but that more advanced learners develop a specific system dedicated to L2 within a few years of exposure

Full textThe Brain Machine interfaces represent a solution to restore several human issues such as movement, speech, etc. The construction of BCI consists of four main phases: "Data Recording", "Signal preprocessing", "Extraction and Selection of Characteristics", and "Classification". In this report we present a new imagery recognition system based on a non-invasive (EEG) and portable acquisition technique to facilitate communication with the outside world for people with specific disabilities. This thesis includes a system called FEASR for the construction of a relevant and optimized database. This database has been tested with several classification methods to obtain a maximum recognition rate of 83.4% for five words imagined in Arabic. In addition, we discuss the impact of optimization algorithms (Wernicke sensor selection, principal component analysis algorithm and the selection of subbands resulting from the discrete wavelet transform decomposition) on recognition percentages according to the size of our database and its reduction

Full textIn children suffering from specific language impairment (SLI), verbal short term memory disorders and lexical learning inability are frequently described. These skills are assessed through repetition tasks and more generally, with verbal output modality which variety of components can be impaired in SLI. In this context, the general aim of this research work was the examination of verbal memorization processes through visual world paradigm. This eye-tracking tasks consist in analyzing eye movements of participants on pictures, consecutively to verbal stimulations. Recognition and short term retention of familiar spoken words were investigated through four studies, in which participants aged 5 and 6, with and without SLI, shown similar patterns of result. Only age differences were revealed, suggesting developmental changing of lexical processing. In a second phase, the fast mapping word learning paradigm requiring few occurences of new words, was proposed to three groups of children. Their lexical learning abilities were again assessed within the visual world paradigm and a spoken word recognition task. SLI groups with poor performances in verbal repetition tasks, have nevertheless associated the new lexical label with referent picture, as their peers with typical development. These studies suggest that verbal information retention in short term memory and encoding of new information are efficient in SLI children, when the tasks do not require any verbal output
