Abstract:
AbstractThis article reflects on the arguments that heritage is as much about people as it is about places and objects. It is focused on Syria and based on a doctoral research project. The article investigates how heritage is approached by both “civil society” groups and extremist religious groups in Syria. It argues that the utilization of heritage by these groups offers learning lessons and examples of people-centered, socially innovative, and future-oriented heritage practices. The article suggests that the heritage community’s efforts in conflict contexts should be less about preservation and more about embracing change and finding creative ways to manage the transformation process from a pre-conflict society to a post-conflict society. In other words, they should tackle issues that matter to conflict-affected people, improve the quality of their life, and increase their horizons of hope and opportunities in assembling better futures.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Rhinoplasty, is derived from the Greek word rhinos (nose) and plassein (to shape), and is a surgery performed to achieve two results: To improve breathing function of nose and to improve cosmetic look of the nose. Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery for correcting and reconstructing the form, restoring the functions, and esthetically enhancing the nose, by resolving nasal trauma (blunt, penetrating, blast), congenital defect, respiratory impediment, and a failed primary rhinoplasty. An otolaryngologist or a plastic and reconstructive surgeon creates a functional, esthetic, and facially proportionate nose by separating the nasal skin and the soft tissues from the osseocartilaginous nasal framework, correcting them as required for form and function, suturing the incisions, and applying either a pack or a stent, or both, to immobilize the corrected nose to ensure the proper healing of the surgical incision. The nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedure corrects and modifies slight defects of the nose by means of subcutaneous injections of biologically inert fillers; the results tend to be relatively transitory, in comparison with the results of nose surgery. The forehead rhinoplastic reconstruction of nose practiced by Indians centuries ago is known universally as Indian forehead flap for nasal reconstruction. Abstract:
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, was originally described in members of the families of Machado, Thomas, and Joseph from São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal, in 1972. The purpose of this article is to present previous descriptions of hereditary ataxia resembling the heterogeneous phenotypic intra-familiar presentation of MJD. We suggest that the condition would best be called dominant spino-pontine atrophy.

Abstract:
My engagement with the social history of the Middle East, as I embarked on graduate studies, coincided with Judith Tucker's lamentation in 1990 that it was a field understudied to the point of being largely ignored. I came to the study of this new region with training in the native history of Canada, which had introduced me to the challenges and rewards of reconstructing the stories of people who had been denied agency in a narrative dominated by European conquest and nation-building.

Abstract:
In the early twentieth century, there was no consensus about the nature of climate. Focusing on ecological understandings of climate, this article contends that the diverse scientific practices used by ecologists to reconstruct past climates resulted in different notions of climate. At the turn of the century, a number of ecologists looked to the geological past to understand climate, but they found different climatic patterns depending on the way they encountered it. Some ecologists, led by Frederic E. Clements, came to believe that the climate displayed cyclical, recurrent patterns after examining tree rings. Others, notably Paul B. Sears, believed that the climate was characterized by unpredictable complexity after examinations of fossil pollen. Their divergent understandings of climate came to a head during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, a severe drought whose effects were amplified by human actions. Both ecologists provided advice to governments and farmers based on their notions of whether or not climate displayed regular periodicity. Their varied assessments of climate reveal broader ideas about interwar science and culture, especially contestations over the capacity of science to predict the future.
