Abstract:
The significance of the national consciousness issues in Russian thought is still very high due to the persisting interconnection principles of the authority and society and strict separation of subject – object functions and roles. Underestimation of Yu.F. Samarin’s ideological heritage as an original interpreter of Fichte’s national spirit philosophy with reference to Russian reality calls for the reconstruction of his national consciousness concept that was formed in the process of the analysis of the social and political problems in Russia in the 19th century. The article demonstrates that Samarin criticized two false ways of the country development related to the “change of “sobornost” (collegiality)”, – cultivating of individualism (or individualistic Western nationalism) and total suppression of Russian people activity by the power while giving preferences to national minorities that resulted in “national spirit fade-out” and various defeats of the country, including military, – and so he came to the conclusion that it was possible to overcome national crisis through the efforts of national intelligentsia and reforms of the monarchy to pursue mass education and enlightment with the purpose of future moral and social ideal realization.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research is due to the interest of modern literary criticism in the study of conceptual images of national literatures formed by the basic universals of ethnic consciousness. The novelty lies in the appeal to the image of homeland in Chinese literature through the prism of the historical-etymological and historical-literary reconstruction of the concept that reflects the ethno-psychological foundations of Chinese consciousness. The problem of the study is comparing a number of lexemes, concepts, artistic images that have formed over the centuries the modern idea of the homeland in the Chinese picture of the world. The purpose of the work is to an alyze the evolution of the concept of “homeland” in the Chinese ethnic and national consciousness on the basis of dictionaries and works of Chinese literature from the Tang era to the 20th century. The methodology is based on the etymological, lexical and semantic reconstruction of the concept of “homeland” in the Chinese picture of the world, based on the historical and cultural context. The main research methods are comparative-historical and structural-semantic ones. As a result of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that the image of the homeland in the ethnic picture of the world of the Chinese was formed as the statehood and national identity of the peoples inhabiting China. In ancient China, the concept of homeland was associated with the place of birth of ancestors, native places, and the country of exodus of alien peoples. These connotations are most clearly found in the lyrics of the Tang era. By the beginning of the 20th century, with the rise of the national movement, the image of the Motherland, drawn from European culture, appeared in the Chinese ethnic consciousness. The Xinhai Revolution allowed the Chinese to discover the world and foreign lands. The image of the motherland-fatherland in this context appears as a correlate of the concept of a foreign land (Japan, England, America). The image of the Motherland, the Father land is used most actively in new Chinese literature during the period of anti-Japanese resistance. After the formation of the PRC and the formation of the national consciousness of a united China, which united many nationalities, among the connotative meanings of ideas about the homeland, the concept of the homeland as a home state is of primary importance. Keywords: the Chinese, ethnic consciousness, land of ancestors, Motherland, foreign land

Abstract:
The reality TV concept has a dominant role in some commercial television stations with national frequency in Serbia. The tabloids, known for sensationalism, banalisation and domination in the press market, became their ?extended hand?, the promoters of their values. The focus of this article is on daily newspapers in Serbia - the various reality TV-related content on their front pages. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, the authors look for the principles, the communication technology and the goals for which the domestic press promotes ?the reality values?. They have analyzed front pages of eight daily newspapers in Serbia (Politika, Danas, Vecernje novosti, Blic, Kurir, Alo, Srpski Telegraf and Informer) that were published during October 2018 and found related content on about 28 percent from the total number of front pages (counting the current reality TV formats and the reality TV stars from the earlier seasons). The results show a clear distinction between the serious press and the tabloids. The tabloids are very strong accomplices in the process of diverting public attention from important topics to trivia (in that context, for researching, the authors use agenda-setting theory, framing theory and similar concepts). If we look at five declared tabloids only, the share of front pages with related content in the total number of front pages is about 44 percent. The research identified another phenomenon - fabricating some other topics into a ?reality concept?. Also, by comparison with previous studies, it was shown that the aforementioned is not an isolated case in the selected period - it is a continuous occurrence. Reality content as we see it on the domestic scene is becoming more trivial from season to season and becoming more dangerous for the power of rational reasoning by their users and observers. Based on all of that, this content can be viewed through the meaning of consciousness reconstruction.

Understanding of traditional values, culture, native history has become an important part of the spiritual sphere of the modern Ukrainian conceptual system. This article uses the Women’s Advisory Council of the New Life Movement to show how educated women developed their own concepts of wartime responsibilities as they conducted resistance and social construction programmes. It particularly examines their work with rural women and efforts to improve education, production, life habits and national consciousness. In transferring their vision of China’s development to uneducated compatriots in the interior, the Council cadres attempted to bolster their social authority and prove their leadership abilities. Their work explicates another dimension of the lasting consequences to wartime relief provision.

Abstract:
Abstract History as the past event, its tracking can be traced through the history trace. History trace is the fact and sign of history record which requires archives to disclosure. Archives as the history document is a silent witness which give evidence toward the success, failure, growth, and wealth of a nation. Archives, as past event record and a historical reconstruction, have an important role in building the nation character. The good nation character that contained in archives will strengthen the spirit of national anthem. Archive as the historical reconstruction can teach us a noble value, goodness, nasionalism, and teach us to follow the struggle value of the national heroes to free the nation from ivanders suppression. When archives that full of patriotism and nasionalism values are served to people, it will grow the collective consciousness of Indonesia that has ever had a strong character in struggling to achieve its independence. Therefore, correlation between archive and history in forming the national character relates to archives role as the historical values ( values of historical). Archive is an ambassador of its era which can give informations for the next era’s interest. Thus, history is actually not inanimatte object. Abstract:
The article focuses on the role of I. Kotlyarevsky's “Aeneid” in the representation of cultural codes in general and in the mental space of Ukrainian culture in particular, in the reflection of fragments of the national picture of the world in terms of specificity of ethnic consciousness, mythological and laughter culture. It is evidenced that the reconstruction of the national-linguistic picture of the world, represented by “Aeneid”, should be continued in the coordinates of the mental-lingual complexes. Among these complexes precedent phenomena are distinguished. They serve as markers of a particular linguistic culture and at the same time they are illustrative material of intercultural communicative interaction. The poem is characterized through the prism of the categories of precedence and intertextuality, in the plane of interaction between “one's own” and “somebody else’s” within the limits of textual discourse. The precedent phenomena (precedent text, precedent situation, precedent saying, precedent name) are differentiated into universal and national precedent ones, the latter of which are considered as those, that contribute to the establishment of national identity and separateness of the Ukrainian linguistic community. It is revealed thepeculiarities of the formation of the speech subculture, available in the minds of native speakers in the form of certain borrowings, in particular from the texts of oral folk art. The national consciousness accumulates born in the society attention to the common people, the peculiarities of their life and culture, decoding of which happens due to the updating of the categories of intertextuality and precedence as well. In his own way ingenious I. Kotlyarevsky demonstrates an unbridled desire to bring the reader closer to the essence of the national spirit and national worldview, with linguistic means and techniques attests the indissoluble connection of time and generations, turns descendants to the origins of the world and national culture, in particular to oral folk art.

Smart, Kirsten. "National consciousness in Postcolonial Nigerian children's literature." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/22880.

Full text
Abstract:
This project highlights the role of locally produced children's written literature for ages six to fourteen in postcolonial Nigeria as a catalyst for national transformation in the wake of colonial rule. My objective is to reveal the perceived possibilities and pitfalls contained in Nigerian children's literature (specifically books published between 1960 and 1990), for the promotion of a new national consciousness through the reintegration of traditional values into a contemporary context. To do this, I draw together children's literature written by Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi and Mabel Segun in order to illustrate the emphasis Nigerian children's book authors writing within the postcolonial moment placed on the concepts of nation and national identity in the aim to 'refashion' the nation. Following from this, I examine the role of the child reader in relation to the adult authors' intentions and pose the question of what the role of the female is in the authors' imagining of a 'new nation'. The study concludes by reflecting on the persistent under-scrutiny of children's literature in Africa by academics and critics, a preconception that still exists today. I move to suggest further research on the genre not only to stimulate an increased production of children's literature more conscious in content and aware of the needs of its young, (male and female) African readership, but also to incite a change in attitude toward the genre as one that is as deserving of interest as its adult counterpart.

Schofield, Clemency Mary Lovedere. ""For those who have no doorway" : Palestinian literature and national consciousness." Thesis, University of Kent, 2006. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.497687.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the part played by Palestinian literature in the formation of national consciousness. The importance of literature to national and anti-colonial struggles has long been recognised, but in the Palestinian situation it has taken on additional significance. Firstly, in the absence of territory it sought to unite a geographically dispersed people, many of whom had suffered severe trauma on being ejected from their homes and lands. A national imagining was vital to overcome feelings of alienation, both from the land and from other sectors of the population, and to create the idea of a national homeland, based on claims to spatial and historical belonging. Secondly, it had to counter a powerful ideology: that of the Zionist claim to the same land. The land is not just a geographical space; it is invested with memories and narratives, and it comes to embody what it means to be Palestinian. Thus the struggle is not only over the land but also over the meaning of the land. However, when a nationalist struggle is predicated largely on tropes of possession of a feminised land, a specifically gendered conception of national agency emerges, one that envisages the masculine as active and the feminine as passive. This thesis therefore investigates the implications of such an imagining. The question of how women themselves relate to the gendered discourse of nationalism - both how they attempt to insert themselves as national agents and how they contest masculinist tropes - is also considered. Additionally, Palestinian women frequently have to cross the psychologically-imposed threshold between the private and public realms, a division that is reinforced not only by patriarchy but also by fundamentalist visions of nation. In this respect, the significance of literature as an imaginary realm in which dominant paradigms can be questioned and reconfigured must not be underestimated. Finally, this thesis examines how writing helps overcome the sense of alienation associated with exile. A powerful dialectic is at work in exilic consciousness: the here-and-now of the hostile present is countered by the there-and-then of a sustaining past, but it is out of this dialectic that possibilities for the future emerge. I look at the way in which the playful appropriation of exile as the motif of our post-modern consciousness is challenged by much Palestinian exilic writing. Some writers find consolations in the condition of exile, while others reconfigure the meanings of return and journeying. The complexity and multivalent nature of Palestinian writing create a heterogeneous conception of nation that becomes the ideal of an inclusive national consciousness.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on history textbooks in the contemporary Anglophone Cameroon and aims at studying what kind of history consciousness and national identity is promoted in the textbooks. History is essential for the forming of national identity. School textbooks reveal officially recognised historical truths in a country, and therefore provide a fruitful source for studies on historical consciousness and national identity. Eurocentrism and western traditions of historiography are essential to take into account in the African context. Also in Cameroon, the schooling was originally established by colonial regimes and aimed at colonizing the mind of the natives. Colonial heritage has shaped the history writing in the African context until the present day and has its effects also on the analysed Cameroonian textbooks. The production of a nationally distinguished publishing house Anucam Educational Books (ANUCAM) was chosen, because of the vast potential that lays in the national publishing industry in African countries, including in Cameroon. The levels of education covered primary (classes 4–6) and lower secondary education (forms 1–5) where the enrolment rates are higher than in the upper secondary education. The historical consciousness is likely to have a more significant basis in these levels of education. Both quantitative (space analysis) and qualitative content analysis (imagology) were used in analyzing the textbooks. I first sketched quantitative tables on the geographical division of the textbook contents into world history, regional history (history of Africa and Europe) and the national history (history of Cameroon). The majority of contents discusses national history (32 %) and the history of Africa (32 %). With a share of 15 %, the history of Europe has a significant role in the textbooks. As regards the timely periods, the contemporary history is almost totally absent. For example, the past 30 years of the history of Cameroon, hence the period under the rule of president Paul Biya, is covered with only 5 %. In the qualitative analysis it will be examined, how the “self” and the “nation” are perceived in the textbooks In examining the image provided of the “self”, the narratives examined are: the origins of Cameroon and the Cameroonians, the “exterior self” and the relation of the “self” with the Western civilisation. The entire formation of Cameroon is seen as a European creation, terminology stemming from the colonial interpretations, is used in descriptions on the Cameroonians and the image of the Western civilisation is loaded with positive connotations of development. In examining the image of the “nation”, the narratives were linked with the state-produced discourse of “national unity”. The process of becoming independent was examined as well as images of leading historical figures and the presidents of Cameroon. Achieving independence appears as a destined historical thread in the textbooks. Leading historical figures are represented necessary for the national unity, which again is seen central for the prosperity of civilisations. Mostly without any criticism or analytical reflection, the presidents are presented as creators of this national unity in Cameroon. Taking into account the central role of history in the forming of national identity, it seems surprising that textbook content analyses in the African context are largely absent. When aiming at improving the quality of education, it is not enough to focus on increasing the access to textbooks. As the international discourse on educational development goals Post-2015 is increasingly tuned to learning, more attention should be paid also to the quality of learning materials. Textbook content analysis can support national efforts of improving the quality of learning materials — an objective explicitly expressed also by the government of Cameroon in its educational policy lines.

Ivanyshyn, Petro. BASIC CONCEPTS OF YEVHEN MALANIUK’S NATIONAL-PHILOSOPHICAL INTERPRETATION: ESEISTIC DISCOURSE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11070.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.

Torres, Marissa, Norberto Nadal-Caraballo, and Alexandros Taflanidis. Rapid tidal reconstruction for the Coastal Hazards System and StormSim part II : Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41482.

Full text
Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the continuing efforts towards incorporating rapid tidal time-series reconstruction and prediction capabilities into the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) and the Stochastic Storm Simulation System (StormSim). The CHS (Nadal-Caraballo et al. 2020) is a national effort for the quantification of coastal storm hazards, including a database and web tool (https://chs.erdc.dren.mil) for the deployment of results from the Probabilistic Coastal Hazard Analysis (PCHA) framework. These PCHA products are developed from regional studies such as the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) (Nadal-Caraballo et al. 2015; Cialone et al. 2015) and the ongoing South Atlantic Coast Study (SACS). The PCHA framework considers hazards due to both tropical and extratropical cyclones, depending on the storm climatology of the region of interest. The CHS supports feasibility studies, probabilistic design of coastal structures, and flood risk management for coastal communities and critical infrastructure. StormSim (https://stormsim.erdc.dren.mil) is a suite of tools used for statistical analysis and probabilistic modeling of historical and synthetic storms and for stochastic design and other engineering applications. One of these tools, the Coastal Hazards Rapid Prediction System (CHRPS) (Torres et al. 2020), can perform rapid prediction of coastal storm hazards, including real-time hurricane-induced flooding. This CHETN discusses the quantification and validation of the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) tidal constituent database (Szpilka et al. 2016) and the tidal reconstruction program Unified Tidal analysis (UTide) (Codiga 2011) in the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (PR/USVI) coastal regions. The new methodology discussed herein will be further developed into the Rapid Tidal Reconstruction (RTR) tool within the StormSim and CHS frameworks.
