The structure completion problem in x-ray fiber diffraction analysis, a crystallographic method for studying polymer structures, involves reconstructing an incomplete image from a known part and experimental data in the form of the squared amplitudes of the Fourier coefficients. Formulating this as a Bayesian estimation problem allows explicit expressions for MMSE and MAP estimates to be obtained. The study focuses on the Belgian part of the Sambre River, between the border with France and its confluence with the Meuse River at Namur. This part was canalized in the 19th and 20th centuries, during which time its length was reduced from 103 to 87.6 km. First, a recovery of its initial length was undertaken, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and comparing old and current maps. Then, the river crossings (fords, bridges, and ferries) indicated on old military maps from the 17th to the 20th centuries were placed on the proposed restitution.

What is the effect of Covid-19 on labor markets when there is no lockdown? We answer this question using individual-level survey data for Nicaragua from January 2019 to May 2021. We find a negative impact of Covid-19 on the labor force participation right after the pandemic, particularly for young females, but also a quick recovery. We find that female labor force participation is strongly related to school attendance. Using high-frequency smartphone data we find that visits to school areas dropped sharply by 50%, but they recovered soon as with the female labor force participation.
