Sams, Lauren Kimbrell. "Examining Access to Recreational Facilities in Danville, Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42685.

Abstract:
Obesity is a growing issue in the United States, and it affects millions of people. Obesity-related illness accounts for billions of dollars in medical expenses each year, heightening the need for prevention and intervention strategies. Physical activity is essential in maintaining a healthy weight, yet population groups have unequal access to physical activity opportunities. This research utilizes an environmental justice framework to examine variations in access and quality of recreational facilities among different socio-demographic groups in Danville, VA. Data for this research include secondary and primary sources. Race data were obtained from the 2010 U.S. Census. The Physical Activity Resource Assessment (PARA) tool was utilized to audit all recreational facilities within the City of Danville for features, amenities, and incivilities. Telephone survey data provided individual level-BMI, physical activity minutes per week, and variables of socioeconomic status, including income, education attainment, employment status, and gender. Analysis included ANOVAs, linear, and bivariate logistic regression. Predominant block group race was a significant predictor of incivilities at physical activity outlets. Proximity to recreational facilities was not a predictor of physical activity or BMI. Interventions must be made to improve the quality of recreational facilities in black or African American block groups.

Khambule, Ishmael Bhekinkosi. "Recreational facilities in Mthonjaneni municipality, KwaZulu Natal: Planning, provision, participation and prospects." Thesis, University of Zululand, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/1175.

Abstract:
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Recreation and Tourism in the Centre for Recreation and Tourism at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2006.
The greatest difficulty in the realm of recreation and tourism particularly in South Africa is the scarcity of the current and relevant research information. Furthermore, the planning and provision of recreation facilities coupled with the usage of fee existing facilities has been one sector mat has been overlooked by local authorities in KwaZulu-Natal and more specifically in die study area. In recent years, more exciting forms of recreation including skiing, snowboard ing, bungee jumping, sky diving, hang gliding, paint balling, rock climbing, backpacking, caving, and adventure tourism have been developed and introduced to the public. Notwithstanding the existence of such sophisticated recreation facilities, the study area seems to lack some of the basic recreation infrastructure. As such, this study seeks to establish some of the following objectives: a) To find out whether there are any policies and guidelines followed in the planning for provision of recreation facilities. b) To investigate whether recreation facilities are adequately provided in the Mthonjaneni Municipal area. c) To establish the extent to which local people utilize the existing recreation facilities in the study area. d) To find out who is responsible for financing the provision of recreation facilities in the study area. e) To reveal the demographic variables that play a role in the management, supply and demand of recreation facilities in Mthonjaneni. The research established that there were inadequate recreation policies and guidelines followed, and that these were not implemented. It further discovered that there were inadequate recreation facilities in the study area. Further that the provision of new facilities was seriously inadequate. In terms of utilisation of recreation facilities the study established that there was non-participation by the majority of respondents. Finally the study revealed that the local government was perceived as the main body responsible for the provision and management of recreation facilities in the study area. The study brought forward the following recommendations. Mthonjaneni Municipality must: a) Develop a policy framework for the governance of sports at local level that is in concert with the national provincial sports and recreation policy. b) Make sport and recreation accessible to all people in the local area authorities are important link in value chain. c) Create the infrastructure required for delivery of sports and recreation. d) Ensure that the existence of programmes that develop human resources potential in sports and recreation. In the New South Africa recreation should be planned to promote nation building or unity rather than segregation. Hence, it is through recreation that the heterogeneous society of South Africa can truly begin to merge and develop a new positive identity. Melmoth town must continue to be centre that provides the people of Mthonjaneni with all amenities including recreation facilities.

Chapman, Gary Allen. "Design variables and the success of outdoor neighborhood recreational facilities." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278696.

Full text
Abstract:
Today, park use is at an all-time high with the number of city parks increasing at a growing rate each year. Designing a successful outdoor neighborhood recreational facility insures that the surrounding population has an enjoyable, safe, and lasting space to recreate. This study properly illustrates the process in designing a successful neighborhood park. A demographic analysis, conducted in Southern California's Coachella Valley, identified three neighborhood parks as ideal study sites. Likewise, the review of existing literature, site observations, and the analysis of a carefully designed survey developed the appropriate methodology in meeting the intent of this study. As author, I wish to stress the importance of process. If the designer of a neighborhood facility is to meet the recreational goals of any community, he or she must first take action in understanding the appropriate process. Once this understanding is achieved, effective design guidelines may then be developed.

Abstract:
An open and flat parcel of land sits as blank as a sheet of paper. The site has neither order nor scale to its presence. A Datum refers to a line, plane, or volume of reference to which other elements in a composition can relate. It organizes a random pattern of elements through its regularity, continuity, and constant presence. For example, the lines of a musical staff serve as a datum in providing the visual basis for reading notes and the relative pitches of their tone. The regularity of their spacing and their continuity organizes, clarities, and accentuates the differences between the series of notes in a musical composition. —Ching The purpose of this design investigation will be the creation of a project which, using the ideas of the datum, will meet all my concerns and criteria as the composer of this thesis.

Abstract:
"The room is not only the beginning of architecture: it is an extension of self. If you think about it, you realize that you don't say the same thing in a small room that you say in a large room. If I were to speak in a great hall, I would have to pick one person who smiles at me in order to be able to speak at all. "The large room and the small room, the tall room and the low room, the room with the fireplace and the room without, all become great events in your mind. You begin to think, not what are the requirements, but rather what are the elements of architecture that you can employ to make an environment in which it is good to learn, good to live, or good to work." Abstract:
This creative project examined design and management alternatives for the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area located in the Hoosier National Forest. The design intent of the project was to develop Hardin Ridge into a wildland recreation facility which offered visitors a variety of experiential opportunity and choice, and provided experiences which could effectively accommodate a demographically diversified population. This project would also provide environmental educational opportunities and attempt to retain the integrity of the sites natural systems. An examination of the importance and benefits of outdoor recreation, National Forest Service recreational planning, outdoor recreation demographic diversity and outdoor recreation design issues was conducted in formulating the projects design criteria and theory. This design criteria and theory was then utilized to create the design concepts directly applicable to the Hardin Ridge project site and develop a design ideology applicable to most U.S. wilderness recreation areas. The final product of the study was a design and management plan which effectively addressed the design objectives at Hardin Ridge and created a design model capable of meeting similar design objectives at the national level.

A new building has been associated with the proposed aquacenter "Water Temple Brno", which is by its character and by the capacity predestined to be a multifunctional main "water world" in Brno. The aim of this study is to design a wellness center that would cover the capacity requirements resulting from population density of the city of Brno, that would architectural and urban correspond with the site, and last but not least, offering a wide range of comfortable services covering the needs of potential customers. As a result, it was suggested modern wellness center, does not disturb the landscape construction sites, understated building that more than itself prefers landscape scenery around and its design slightly underscores the balance between nature and human work planted in it.

Abstract:
This investigation indicates that there are regions within Europe that seems to have similar preferences and priorities regarding pike angling travels to Sweden. Swedish pike angling facilities process in first hand markets with favourable economic circumstances and a cultural interest for pike angling. There was a big differences in features between the Northern, Western, Eastern and Southern regions of Europe. They also seems to be tied to specific regions within some of the nations. The regions have diverse requirements and distinguish in terms of consumption and preferences regarding different aspects of pike angling. From there it is possible to divide pike angling tourists into segments. Sometimes the identified regions have economic or cultural linkage, consequently parallels can be drawn to research in the field of international marketing. The North European market for pike angling tourism in Sweden is varying where the English and Baltic states is more frequently processed than the domestic market. Markets outside of the Nordic countries were the most important among the pike angling facilities, standing for approximately 90 % of the businesses. In this Investigation two segments were observed in countries with in general weaker economic circumstances. Usually these countries had a budget concentrated consumption but also elements of a more luxurious consumption pattern. These countries were located in Eastern Europe. Angling tourists from Western Europe have in general more purchase power and constitute the most important markets for the Swedish pike angling facilities. Tourists from Western Europe are by tradition the most frequent visitors. The economic situation in the Southern Europe together with lack of cultural interest for pike angling seems to be an explanation for the low activity in processing of these markets. The only exception is the Italian market which on a regional level is more frequently processed among the Swedish pike angling facilities. In this investigation, markets from 17 Swedish pike angling facilities were mapped by the frequency of process through phone surveys. Characteristics of the companies were either profiled businesses towards pike angling or had a strong dependence on resource of pike in their business. Tour operators from 11 countries who offers packaged travels to the facilities were also interviewed through phone surveys. The facilities together with the tour operators identified some economic preferences and cultural differences between some nations and regions. For better background data about the interest for pike in Europe 6 angling associations answered an e-mail survey. The investigation also includes an interview with one of the pioneers and former vice president for one of the most successful pike angling facilities in Sweden. Selection of facilities, concepts and parameters is inspired by the authorities’ publications in the field of angling tourism. Also advices from the national angling project (SwedenFishing) have inspired parts of this thesis.

Sayed, Israel. "The utilisation of sports and recreation facilities in Botswana / Israel Sayed." Thesis, North-West University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/206.

Abstract:
Several factors affect sports and recreation participation in human communities. Such factors include sports and recreation knowledge and skills of people, availability of time, interest and disposable income etc. Through expressing their various social needs, community residents are able to show the adequacy and or the inadequacy in the factors influencing sports and recreation participation in their communities. Several studies have indicated that inadequacy in the factors influencing sports and recreation participation such as inadequate programmes, lack of interest, lack of disposable income, lack of facilities result in low participation in sports and recreation activities. Low participation in sports and recreational pursuits could result in increased hypokinetic morbidity and other social and economic problems such as: crime, substance and drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, alienated anti-social behaviours, work absenteeism, medical and social justice costs in communities. The main purpose of the study was to find different sports and recreation needs of three communities in Botswana. Five hundred (500) residents of the three communities aged 18-40 years were randomly selected in the three communities in Botswana to participate in the study. The questionnaire that was prepared and administered on the randomly selected residents of the three communities attempted to gather the following information: general sports and recreation participation profile of the respondents of the three communities, participation in sports and recreation activities in the three communities' recently constructed integrated sports facilities, problems responsible for low participation in sports and recreation activities and finally to identify which of the five barrier categories; aptitude, socio-economic, socio-cultural, awareness of community integrated sports facilities and facility constraints constrained sports and recreation in the three communities. Descriptive statistics and frequency, T-test and ANOVA were used to analyse data. The results showed low participation that ranged from 0.0% to 47.4% in sports activities in the three communities, participation in few recreational activities, low participation in the three communities' integrated sports facilities accounted by 29.5% in Molepolole, 26.1% in Serowe and 53.4% in Masunga for both men and women. The results showed problems perceived to constrain sports and recreation participation in the three communities. Descriptive data analysis also showed that out of the five barrier categories (aptitude, socio-cultural, awareness of facilities and facility constraints) respondents of the three communities were mainly constrained by the socio-economic barriers. Facility constraints were only found to constrain participation in Masunga. T-test analysis showed no significant differences between males and females of each of the three communities in the five barrier categories. The ANOVA test of variance showed significance difference between females of the three communities in four of the five barrier categories and a no significant difference in one of the five barrier categories. No significant difference was found between males of the three communities in four barrier categories and a significant difference was only found in one barrier category. These results led to the acceptance of the hypothesis that 'the three communities in Botswana have similar sports and recreation needs' and the partial acceptance of the hypothesis that 'there is no significant difference between respondents of the three communities in the way they experienced the five barrier categories.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the increasingly formalised provision of adventure recreation facilities via a mixed economy provision model. Utilising a figurational analysis based upon the work of Norbert Elias, the study highlights how such an analysis of the processes impacting upon the wide stakeholder environment of - ' providers, funding bodies and operational partners can assist in understanding the successes and failures of such provision. Through a case study analysis of a skatepark in Dundee, Scotland, the thesis charts the development of a civilising process within skateboarding as a recreational activity. This process is shown to emerge as a result of the development of a standardised approach to provision dominated by centrally supported 'arm's length' funding bodies, such as SportScotland which focuses upon instilling the activity with a series of behaviour codes and approaches, which contradict the anti-structural characteristics of the typical skateboarding participant: The thesis argues that this civilising process, inadvertently leads to the social exclusion of the original target community, who reject the formalised provision mechanism offered to them. As a result, the thesis concludes that the current provision model is both ineffective and inefficient in its work and requires re- consideration in order to meet the needs of emerging sports such as those within the adventure recreation realm.

Rich, Dustin. "Student engagement in Pacific Recreation's programs, services, and facilities as a predictor of participation in sports clubs." Scholarly Commons, 2019. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3586.

Full text
Abstract:
Sports clubs are a program ran through Pacific Recreation at the University of the Pacific. This study determines whether using services and facilities that Pacific Recreation offers has a statistically significant relationship with students joining or participating in sports clubs. METHOD: When a student comes into the Baun Fitness Center to work out, participate in a class, take part of personal training, or climb the rock tower, that student has to swipe into the facility and service of choice. The same process occurs for when a student wants to use external services like Intramural Sports and Informal Recreation. Quantitative data were pulled from Innosoft Fusion, software that Pacific Recreation utilizes to manage and track their facilities, programs, and services. 2,332 individual student datum were analyzed from the information received from Innosoft Fusion to measure student engagement from the Fall 2017 semester. RESULTS: The Baun Fitness Center and other external services were found to play a significant role with association with participation in sports clubs. Participation in Baun Fitness Center workouts, rock tower, informal recreation, tiger training, and intramural sports associates with participation in sports clubs. It was determined that for each additional individual that participates in these services or programs, there would be an increased chance of individuals to also participate in sports clubs. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that there are additional ways for sports clubs to advertise and promote their clubs for recruitment. Pacific Recreation’ marketing department can use the results from this study to analyze and plan additional marketing strategies that can use cross-promotion from the programs, services, and facilities Pacific Recreation has to offer. This study recommends multiple future research ideas for Pacific Recreation to take apart in to gain new insights on participation and marketing ideas from all of their programs.

National Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), as outlined in their National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP) and the South African White Paper on Sport and Recreation focuses on three pillars namely, 1) an active nation; 2) a winning nation and 3) an enabling environment. The need for sport and recreation facilities is further emphasised in Priority Two of the South African White Paper on Sport and Recreation. This priority focuses specifically on the provision of sport and recreation facilities and states that the challenge in the provision of facilities is not simply about a shortage, but also the location of the facilities as well as the effective management thereof. Local government has the responsibility of providing an enabling environment through the provision of existing sports and recreation facilities and building of new facilities. Effective sport and recreation provision relies on the effective management of these facilities (SRSA, 2012). Facility Managers need various administrative skills in order to operate facilities efficiently and effectively. The coordination of these management principles and standard operating procedures is critical in the effective and efficient management of sport and recreation facilities today. This study presents a first attempt to determine the level of management capacity of sport and recreation facilities by local government in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. The research question for this study was therefore formulated as: “What is the management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality?” Based on this particular research question, it was hypothesised that: H0: The management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers employed in the City of Tshwane is satisfactory/ high. H1: The management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers employed in the City of Tshwane is unsatisfactory/ low. The aim of the study was to determine a management capacity profile of sport and recreation facilities in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Specific objectives of the study were to: - Explore and analyse the existing management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers according to the dimensions of the Capacity Analysis Tool; - Identify potential problem areas in the operations of sport and recreation facilities related to management capacity; and - Formulate recommendations to the appropriate decision makers in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to create enabling environments for sport and recreation facilities of the local authority under study. Data were gathered by means of a self-administered Capacity Analysis Tool completed by full time Sport and Recreation Facility Managers of the City Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. A purposive research sample of eight (n=8) was used. The study critically analysed and evaluated the perceptions of the level of management of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and its capacity to manage its sport and recreation facilities. The results are not generalised but specific to the research sample. Effective management and possible ineffectiveness were identified to formulate guidelines for increased management capacity. The research was quantitative in nature and data interpretation and analysis was therefore made by use of tables, graphs and statistics. Results for the study indicated that sport and recreation facilities are geographically decentralised over the five regions in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, namely the South region, the North West region, the North East region, the Central West region and the East region. Part-time, full-time and voluntary staff work at these sport and recreation facilities, all of whom perform different roles and responsibilities and management tasks. An overall collective mean score of x =2.11 (SD=1.34) was recorded for all eight management dimensions of management capacity as evaluated by the Capacity Analysis Tool. These results, therefore, confirms the stated H1 for this study. It is, therefore, concluded that sport and recreation managers at the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality perform below average in the majority of elements over the eight management dimensions of management capacity. This result suggests that sport and recreation facilities are most likely not managed optimally to the benefit of all stakeholders. Recommendations for this research centred around improving those dimensions of management capacity that needed to be improved as they performed below average, which included clearly defined duties and responsibilities of employees guided by policies and a departmental constitution that is agreed upon by all members of the department, hiring of adequate staff and personnel in the right positions, increasing networking and fundraising capacity, revisiting job descriptions, provision of adequate and continuous training, regular maintenance of sport and recreation facilities and hiring of skilled contractors, provision of adequate resources to staff members to perform duties effectively and advocacy of employees and community members. The effective and efficient management of sport and recreation facilities, including a high capacity to manage sport and recreation facilities is essential and therefore, the following aspects are suggested for the undertaking of further research: A three year review of the status of management of sport and recreation facilities in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality could be conducted to determine the management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers to manage sport and recreation facilities; Investigate the community’s perception of sport and recreation facilities with regard to service delivery and meeting the community’s overall needs for sport and recreation participation and quality of life enhancement; Investigate the management capacity of middle and higher management level employees with regard to sport and recreation facility management in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality; Conduct a comparative study of the management capacity of Sport and Recreation Facility Managers in different municipalities across Gauteng; and Conduct a needs analysis in communities in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to gather information of what communities need with regard to development of new sport and recreation facilities.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine wellness specific requests of the Baby Boomer population in reference to choosing a skilled nursing facility for self and family members. Participants are any individual born from 1946 ¨C 1964 with access to the survey via internet or hard copy. A survey was emailed using various hosting sites, such as corporate emails, social media sites, and forwards to additional contacts, containing questions regarding physical, social, and intellectual wellness preferences in the nursing setting. Returned survey responses through PsychData totaled 462, totaling 436 useable surveys. All data analyses were conducted using SPSS version 21.0, using a significance level of p ≤ .05: for all analyses. Results of the study show that the specific demographics of income and education may not significantly determine the extent to which a Baby Boomer will prefer certain dimensions of wellness in a skilled nursing facility. However, gender has a significant impact on both physical and social wellness preferences based on Mann Whitney analysis. Physical wellness questions regarding meal options, walking trails, supervised exercise programs, adapted exercise programs, and overall wellness were all significantly different at p <.001. Mean scores indicate women place slightly greater importance on each measure of physical wellness. Social wellness and gender shows association when measuring (1) distance of facility from family members and potential visiting friends, (2) family proximity to facility (3) animal interaction, and (4) volunteer opportunities. While the differences between genders are statistically significant for four of the five social wellness questions, there is only a noticeable difference for animal interactions. Additionally, intellectual wellness is important to Baby Boomers, exhibited by selections of ongoing educational programs and accessibility to technology and internet communication via Wi-Fi availability. In conclusion, the majority of Baby Boomers surveyed seek physical and social wellness opportunities in long term care, specifically skilled nursing despite income and education levels.

Abstract:
Visitors expect to a gain high-quality outdoor experiences at any recreation site they visit. In order to support that effort, most recreation managers utilize interpretive facilities to educate and inform visitors about the site. It is important for interpretive managers to be aware of what kind of interpretive media could best be used in a given setting for the type of visitor anticipated. To accomplish this goal, it is necessary to understand visitors' behavior and incorporate that understanding into the interpretive planning process. This study looks at visitor use of interpretive facilities provided at Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming. The primary method of data-gathering for this study was observation (participant observation and behavioral mapping). Observations were made at randomly selected times over 63 hours of observation in 1995. Data were collected at three locations: Fossil Butte visitor center, Fossil Lake self-guided trail, and roadside displays. Analysis was made using descriptive statistics for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. A 13-minute audiovisual program was the most attractive interpretive facility at the visitor center. Other popular activities in the center include: examing standing displays on paleontology, asking information or directions, taking pictures, making purchases, and certain activities for children. Nature trail hiking usually was done in conjunction with use of nearby picnic facilities. More visitors in vehicles passed by the roadside display than those who stopped to read it. Based on these and other results, several recommendations are made for park managers.

Lee, Ka-yiu, and 李嘉耀. "Some associations between neighbourhood recreation facilities and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48330000.

Full text
Abstract:
The benefits of engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity have been documented in the literature. The neighbourhood environment, which could influence large proportions of population for sustained periods of time, has been associated with physical activity in Western countries. Yet, it remains unclear that how the neighbourhood environment in ultra-dense Hong Kong, especially with respect to proximity and availability of recreational facilities, is associated with physical activity of its residents. This study examines the associations between neighbourhood recreational facility, in both perceived and objective measures, and physical activity of residents in Hong Kong. The differences between perceived and objective availability of recreational facilities, and the perceived encouraging or discouraging features of a self-reported recreational facility were also examined. The availability of recreational facilities between high and low socio-economic status neighbourhoods was compared to identify inequalities of recreational resource allocation. A total of 480 participants aged 18-65 years, living in 32 neighbourhoods of different extremes of walkability and socio-economic status, were recruited to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire in which the perceived aspects of neighbourhood recreational facilities were examined, and to wear a motion sensor which objectively measure physical activity for 7 consecutive days. Objective availability of 14 types of recreational facilities, categorized into combinations of indoor or outdoor and public, residential or commercial facilities, were quantified by direct observations. Geographical Information Systems further provided objective data regarding the number of parks, sports centres, sports grounds, playgrounds, swimming pools, bike lanes and pavilions available in the examined neighbourhoods. The objectively-assessed numbers of residential outdoor table tennis courts and public indoor swimming pools, and the presence of tennis courts, pavilions and swimming pools, as well as the perceived presence of bike lanes and swimming pools were positively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. In contrast, the objectively-assessed numbers of playgrounds, and the presence of soccer pitches, squash courts and playgrounds, were negatively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Poor agreements between perceived and objective availability of volleyball courts, soccer pitches, walking trails, weight and cardio-training equipment were observed. In contrast, good agreement between perceived and objective availability of tennis courts was observed. The level of agreement between perceived and objective availability of specific types of recreational facilities was influenced by the types of neighbourhood where participants lived and socio-demographics characteristics, such as age, education level and monthly household income. Perceived encouraging and discouraging features of a regularly-used recreational facility were observed across different domains, including the conditions of changing rooms and toilets, environmental safety, and aesthetics. High socio-economic status neighbourhoods had higher numbers of pavilions and swimming pools, and had higher odds of having sports grounds, swimming pools and tennis courts than low socio-economic status neighbourhoods. The findings of this study imply that certain types of recreational facilities have the potential to promote physical activity. Public health policy makers should enhance public awareness of neighbourhood recreational facilities, improve their quality and equality in distribution among high and low socio-economic status neighbourhoods, in an attempt to promote physical activity.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to promote healthy living for people residing in a disadvantaged area. Physical activity, social interaction a connection with nature are key aspects in this project. The proposed facility would thus include amenities for recreation and health services to assist in achieving this goal. The architecture will be used to stimulate the senses and thus bring into consciousness the presence of the human body in its interaction with the surroundings. The motivation for the project is the fact that many of the health problems experienced by the population of the country are caused by obesity. A lack of physical activity and poor eating habits has resulted in obesity and its associated illnesses being quite common in all communities around the world. Another reason for the project is the accelerated damages that are occurring to the natural environment. People have become unaware of the importance of natural environment and this ignorance has lead to polluting and general mistreatment becoming common place. The proposed site is in the township of Olievenhoutbosch, south of Tshwane. The township lacks many public facilities so the proposed design should also consider the intervention being more than just a health and recreation centre, but one that serves as a hub for the people of the community.

With the implementation of the national two-day-off gov-ernment policy, it has led to a wave of high demand for leisure and recreational facilities and services. Many of which abound with local characteristics and unique recreational offerings. Beitou Hot Spring Foot Bath is one of them. The main purpose of this study is to explore the degree of satisfaction from visitors after using the leisure and recreational facilities in Taipei Municipal Beitou Hot Springs. In this survey the visitors were asked to rate the satisfaction of their recreational experience in the following categories in the questionnaire: (1) Main Facilities, (2) Ancillary Facilities, (3) Cleanliness, (4) Service Management and (5) Traffic Information. Applying the theory of satisfaction, this paper investigates the situation and satisfaction degree of the subject leisure and recreational facilities by means of empirical research, and discusses whether there is obvious difference in the degree of cognition of the influencing factors on different recreational facilities. The data obtained from the questionnaire were examined and analyzed by SPSS Statistics, using descriptive statistics, item analysis, reliability analysis, single factor variable analysis and Scheffe post-hoc comparison. The results of the actual statistical analysis show that there are significant differences in the satisfaction degree of the recreational facilities in terms of gender, age, educational level, occupation, place of residence, means of transportation, number of visits and facilities information. According to the conclusion of the study, the proposal for the recreation facilities of the Beitou Foot Bath Hot Springsis to increase the amount of spring source, bundle up with other recreational facilities in the surrounding area of Park No.48, and increase media exposure of the whole park in order to maximize the benefits and effectiveness.

Abstract:
A dissertation of limited scope submitted to the Fuculty of Arts in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma in Recreation and Tourism in the Centre for Recreation and Tourism at the University of Zululand, 2007.
The study on provision of recreation facilities at Osizweni Township, Newcastle was conducted against the background that the local community is not provided with sufficient recreation facilities, it was surprising to see that the majority of local community is not participating in recreation activities. The study was aimed at finding the level of provision of the recreation facilities in the study area. This aimed was narrowed down to the following objectives. • To establish the level of understanding and meaning of recreation as an activity in the study area • To reveal the level of awareness of the community about the provision of recreation facilities in the study area. • To indicate the participation levels of the local community in recreation activities. • To investigate the level of provision of recreation facilities in the study area • To establish the extent to which members of the community perceive the benefit arising from the availability of recreation facilities in the study area. The study hypothesised that: • That the local community have a little understanding and meaning of recreation. • That some of the local community members are aware about the provision recreation facilities in the study area and some are not aware. • That the participation level in recreation activities in the study area is low. • That the provision of recreation facilities in the study area is inadequate. • That everyone in the local community perceives the benefit arising from the availability of recreation facilities in the study area. Data was collected through the use sets of questionnaires, which had both open-ended and closed ended. After this data was collected, it was analysed through the use of computer programme, Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). This programme was used to formulate frequency tables and to relate variables There were various findings that were deduces from the responses. It was discovered that the provision of recreation facilities at Osizweni community is inadequate. The inadequacy of recreation facilities in the study area has resulted to lower level of participation in recreation activities. In addition it was discovered that the local community is aware of the recreation facilities found in the study area, the problem is that the recreation facilities are not up to standard. To address the concerns of the local community various recommendations were suggested. These included provision of recreation facilities, youth development programmes, providers of recreation facilities and availability of recreation facilities as benefits. Once the local community is provided with adequacy recreation facilities, they will participate in recreation facilities and the crime level will decrease.

The purpose of this study was to explore the physiological responses of passengers while take rides in amusement park. Although all of the rides in amusement park showed the limitations of riders e.g., height, weight, age, pregnant women, heart patients, however, compliance of passengers or potential impact of physical and psychological might be occurred. When passengers take amusement facilities, the human body would accompany nervous, excited, scared feelings and that would to produce different physical and psychological reflection. These variations of body at this moment would have negative influence to human body or not. Thus, present study applied the wireless physiological signal measurement instrument (Biopac Harness), the actual measurement physiological response while passengers were taken the free fall ride, pirate ship, small train, around 360 degrees of swing rides, carousel, roller coasters and other amusement facilities. The heart rate, respiratory rate, skin temperature, changes in trunk angle, maximum acceleration and three-axis acceleration of change will collected by wireless physiological signal measurement instrument. Present study also applied the questionnaire survey to investigate the behaviors of passenger in amusement park. Results of survey found that most people will go to amusement park again for more than 10 months, and cost time about 4 to 6 hours in the amusement park. Passengers have taken different amusement facilities to make the various uncomfortable parts of body, and the facilities of amusement park should be classify accounting to three levels such as general level (all ages), slightly stimulated (with their parents or with some of the risk), stimulation (strongly recommended to consider their physical condition required). Final, recommendations of present study showed that apart from in accordance with riding limitations of facilities, passengers must considered health status yourself right now to decided riding recreational facilities. The demand for recreational facilities of Taiwan has grown these years. It becomes obvious that current recreational facilities cannot satisfy the demand gradually. Setting new recreational facilities on the right location hence becomes an important issue. There are several criteria need to be considered when determining the proper location for recreational facilities. In this research, we consider transportation convenience maximization, minimum number of new facilities given all demand are satisfied, coverage maximization, and total travel distance minimization simultaneously.Multiple objective decision making(MODM) technique and location theory are used to generate a non-dominated solution, in other words, the number and location of new reccreational facilities.

With the generalization of education and the development in medical technology, population ageing has become a global issue. In 1993, Taiwan entered the ageing society officially. For the elderly people, they have certain demands and expectations for recreational acitivites. However, current recreational facilities installed by both the government and private sectors are designed for school children, adolescents, or adults. Hardly any of these recreational facilities are suitable for elderly people. It is very important to provide and promote recreational activities suitable for elderly people. Regarding the promotion and development of recreational facilities for elderly people, we need to understand the recreational activities that are actually demanded by them. In this study, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) are employed to examine the correlation analysis of the demands of recreational facilities, the participation in recreational activities, and leisure obstacles regarding the elderly people. The individual model fits and overall model fits in this research are complied with model evaluation index, with both convergent validity and discriminant validity fit into the standard mode. This research has excellent validity and reliability. Analyzed with regression analysis in SEM, it is discovered that there is positive influence of the demand of recreational facilities on the participation of reactional activities regarding elderly people. In this research, it is discovered that a majority of elderly people prefer to participate in static recreational activities but they have certain demand for dynamic recreational activities. It indicates that there are insufficient dynamic recreational facilities for the elderly people in Taiwan.
