This chapter examines recurrent epitaphic formulae in the Aeneid, including those applied to Dido, Misenus, Caieta, and Cretheus, which have a metatextual force, amplifying associations between Virgil’s oeuvre and his tomb. In particular, the succession of epitaphs for Palinurus and the account of his demise resonate respectively with Virgil’s attested ‘auto-epitaph’ and with the supposed circumstances of the poet’s death, narrated in the Suetonius-Donatus Vita. Finally, the pre-proemium to the Aeneid, the sphragis to the Georgics, and the closing verse of the Eclogues account for the intensif

In this chapter, papyrus letters sent from superiors to their inferiors are studied on the basis of test cases ranging across the Graeco-Roman period in Egypt, from the third century BCE to the third century CE. This correspondence is drawn from four archival groups of texts: the archive of Zenon; the letters of L. Bellienus Gemellus and the letters of the sons of Patron; and the Heroninus archive. The letters are usually short, full of imperatives, and characterized by the absence of philophronetic formulae. Recurrent themes of the correspondence are urgency, rebukes, orders, and interdiction

Why mathematics is not merely formulaic: an argument that to write a mathematical proof is tantamount to inventing a story. In The Meaning of Proofs, mathematician Gabriele Lolli argues that to write a mathematical proof is tantamount to inventing a story. Lolli offers not instructions for how to write mathematical proofs, but a philosophical and poetic reflection on mathematical proofs as narrative. Mathematics, imprisoned within its symbols and images, Lolli writes, says nothing if its meaning is not narrated in a story. The minute mathematicians open their mouths to explain something—the me

This chapter explores how social movements have influenced institutional politics—with particular reference to dissent—in America. The chapter looks at the process of political institutionalization offered by the American political system to various claimants. It considers how American politics helped perpetrate inclusion and influence, and how historic movements have responded to those opportunities. It then describes four distinct social movements in America: feminism and women’s rights, civil rights and abolition of slavery, labor movement, and environmentalism. It argues that these movemen

This chapter presents a commentary on Mike Leigh's film career. It attempts to reclaim him from the kindly ghetto in which he has been placed by his well-meaning enthusiasts. Leigh is typically considered an unassuming crafter of little movies, who has written little or nothing that we would consider theory, or even criticism. However, it is shown that Leigh is a filmmaker deeply invested in cinema's formal, conceptual, and narrative dimensions. The recurrent simplifications of what his cinema is, and what his cinema does, result in part from the mode in which he works, or the mode in which he

Philip Kaufman’s cinema is stylistically and philosophically rich, but he has not received the kind of acclaim routinely showered on his peers. One reason is that the movies of directors such as Woody Allen, Robert Altman, or Quentin Tarantino are easier to categorize as belonging to one person. Because Kaufman’s versatility is greater than his recognizability, he is considered less of an auteur. But close analysis of his twelve films reveals a true auteur at work. They are connected first by formal majesty: if Flaubert invoked “le mot juste” (the exact word), Kaufman finds “l’image juste”—the

At the most fundamental level, crisis is the disintegration of relationality among creatures. In fact, crisis is a battle of attrition with and within selfhood. It has the potential to turn

Civilian control over the military is widely hailed as among the biggest successes of India’s democracy. This is a rarity, especially among postcolonial states, and is rightfully celebrated. But has this come at a cost? The Absent Dialogue argues that the pattern of civil–military relations in India has hampered its military effectiveness. Indian politicians and bureaucrats have long been content with the formal and ritualistic exercise of civilian control, while the military continues to operate in institutional silos, with little substantive engagement between the two.
