Abstract:
Katrin Flikschuh presses Karl Amerik’s notion of recursive justification into service with respect to the question whether nomads have an obligation to enter statehood. Flikschuh answers in the negative, and claims that nomads, who have not entered into the civil condition, cannot be expected to conform to the obligations of statehood. I agree with Flikschuh’s claim, and provide further support through Kant’s arguments in the Lectures on Logic that such obligations as statehood are objective criteria of judging, and require the raising of subjective claims to practical reality—a condition that

Abstract:
The casual justification of the influence of a technology, particularly artificial intelligence, by appeal to the existence of the technology constitutes an artificialistic fallacy, analogous to the naturalistic fallacy that is well-known in philosophy. Similar to an invocation of nature to provide moral warrant (the naturalistic fallacy), modern tech evangelists invoke the burgeoning of hardware and software products in order to promote that burgeoning (the artificialistic fallacy). This fallacy is often tacit or committed by omission. Emerging ethical initiatives emphasize the refinement, ex

Purpose – This paper aims to improve the accuracy of hotel daily occupancy forecasts – an essential element in the revenue management cycle – by proposing and testing a novel approach. The authors add the hotel competitive-set’s predicted occupancy as an input of the individual property forecast and, using a recursive approach, demonstrate that there is a potential for significant reduction in the forecasting error. Design/methodology/approach – The paper outlines the theoretical justification and the mechanism for this new approach. It applies a simulation for exploring the potential to impro

There is a tendency within the literature to decry Kant as either a proto-imperialist or as a proto-democrat in relation to his views on distant strangers. I here take an alternative view, arguing that Kant’s cosmopolitan morality is considerably more context-sensitive than is often assumed. More specifically, I argue that Kant’s encounter with American nomads on the final pages of his Doctrine of Right reflects a nuanced reading of European settlers’ requisite comportment towards them: Kant neither endorses a universal duty of state entrance nor does he place nomads beyond all possible moral

AbstractLogic is traditionally considered to be a purely syntactic discipline, at least in principle. However, prof. David Isles has shown that this ideal is not yet met in traditional logic. Semantic residue is present in the assumption that the domain of a variable should be fixed in advance of a derivation, and also in the notion that a numerical notation must refer to a number rather than be considered a mathematical object in and of itself. Based on his work, the central question of this thesis is what kind of logic, if any, results from removing this semantic residue from traditional log

During the Danish cartoon controversy, appeals to universal liberal values were often made in ways that marginalized Muslims. An analysis of the controversy reveals that referring to ‘universal values’ can be exclusionary when dominant actors fail to distinguish their own culture’s embodiment of these values from the more abstract ideas. The article suggests that the solution to this problem is not to discard liberal principles but rather to see them in a more deliberative democratic way. This means that we should move from focusing on citizens merely as subjects of law and right holders to se

Network design for a multiprocessor computing system or data center is an important problem where the search for graph models that have attractive topological properties and allow the use of efficient routing algorithms is carried out. Cayley graphs have the indicated properties, in particular such as high symmetry, hierarchical structure, recursive design, high connectivity and fault tolerance. The definition of the Cayley graph implies that the vertices of the graph are elements of some algebraic group. Selecting a group and its generating elements allows us to obtain a graph that meets the

Abstract:
The severity of epidemics of Septoria tritici blotch (STB) in wheat, caused by Mycosphaerella graminicola, was recorded for a 38-year period at Temora in southern New South Wales. The disease was rated as severe in 11 years, moderate in 11 and nil to light in 15, while very wet conditions prevented sowing in one year. The correlation of disease severity (S, where 0 =nil, 7 =very severe) with environmental and management factors was examined: the correlation was positive with days from sowing to heading and with rainfall ( R-4W , R+4W, mm) and the number of rainy days in the 4-week periods befo

In the context of rapid advancements in unmanned technologies, the task of efficient drone trajectory planning is gaining particular relevance. This includes, in particular, optimization of a drone's flight path to maximize coverage of target objects. The research is relevant to both civil and military applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including territory monitoring, search and rescue operations, and patrolling. The problem under consideration consists in maximizing the weighted number of objects that a drone can survey while moving along a straight-line trajectory. Given the di

It describes a commodity space in which quantities and prices both will reside. The stochastic Lagrange multipliers of Chapter 4 are closely related to equilibrium prices and live in the same mathematical space. The planning problem studied in Chapter 4 produces an outcome in which the process for consumption {ct} is an n-dimensional stochastic process that belongs to L2 0. The project tasks included the definition of the digitalisation approach and its application to ESA AOCS/GNC missions, to validate and improve the modelling process.
