Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) sought an opinion from the Joint Expert Group for Food Contact Materials (FCMJEG) whether plastic materials from the open environment that are subsequently recycled could be safely utilised in food contact materials (FCMs). The FCMJEG assessed all available information, including all information and data submitted to the FSA following a call for evidence by the end of January 2024. Environmental or ocean bound plastic (OBP) is a relatively new input material for mechanical recycling and use in final recycled FCMs, hence the avai

Abstract:
This working paper shows how Maldives can boost recycling to strengthen its solid waste management strategy, protect its blue ocean economy, and create green business opportunities to support its long-term sustainable growth. Estimating under 2 percent of plastic waste is recycled in the island nation, it outlines how factors including high costs, inefficient collection efforts, and a lack of reprocessing facilities are hobbling recycling efforts. It recommends Maldives set up public-private partnerships with waste exporters and recyclers, incentivize domestic demand, and build a modern waste

This report explores the potential of Urban Agriculture (UA) to enhance food security, improve resource efficiency, and promote smart, resilient, and circular cities. The discussion is framed within the scope of the Horizon 2020 project ‘Sino-European Innovative Green and Smart Cities’ (SiEUGreen) which explored different pathways to turn waste into resources for growing food in cities through the combination of different technologies. These technologies were tested in five showcases: Campus Ås, in Ås, Norway; World Gardens and Brabrand Fællesgartneriet community gardens in Aarhus, Denmark; Tu

Carruth, William, Webster Floyd, and Jeb Tingle. Laboratory evaluation of recycled asphalt pavement and engineered polymer binder for small airfield repairs. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/48630.

Abstract:
Conducting small asphalt repairs on airfields in remote locations can be technically and logistically challenging. An alternative to cold patch products is using an engineered polymer binder (EPB) mixed with recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). This paper presents the results of a laboratory evaluation of EPB with both wet and dry RAP. Compacted specimens were tested for rut resistance, indirect tensile strength (ITS), and Cantabro mass loss (ML). The results indicate that RAP mixed with EPB exhibited substantial rut resistance with ITS and ML similar to that of conventional dense-graded asphalt.

BENDING ANALYSIS OF RECYCLED CONCRETE BEAMS REINFORCED WITH GFRP BARS UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.3.8.

Abstract:
GFRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) reinforcement material is characterized by high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, which exhibits promising application prospects in engineering. The GFRP reinforcement for steel-concrete beams can increase the structural load-bearing capacity and durability. In this study, a refined finite element model of high-temperature GFRP-reinforced recycled steel-concrete beams was established by using ABAQUS software. The temperature distribution and residual load-carrying capacity of GFRP-reinforced recycled steel-concrete beams were analyzed, and the reliabi

Abstract:
The FSA and FSS have become aware of the use of recycled plastic food contact applications that are in part, or fully, fulfilled using so called “ocean-bound” plastic. As this term has been observed to be a relatively new concept in food contact applications a full review of whether plastic material sourced from the open environment (ocean, ocean-bound, land) can be utilised in food packaging, either directly or behind a functional barrier, is currently being undertaken by the FSA. As part of its full review, the FSA and FSS invites submissions from industry, the individuals as consumers, or i

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF L-SHAPED COLUMN COMPOSED OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETE-FILLED SQUARE STEEL TUBES UNDER ECCENTRIC COMPRESSION. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.2.10.

Abstract:
The eccentric compression behaviors of L-shaped columns made of recycled aggregate concrete-filled square steel tubes (L-RACFST) with various replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) are introduced in this paper. The experimental study demonstrates that the overall instability failure is the final failure mode of the L-RACFST columns and that the replacement ratio of RCA has little influence on the final failure mode of the specimens. When the RCA replacement ratio exceeds 40%, the specimens frequently move right into the failure stage. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) inside ste
