Abstract:
Three compacted reddish brown tropical soils from Ibadan, Southwestern Nigerian, West Africa, were investigated in the laboratory for their suitability as hydraulic barriers for waste containment structure. The key parameters evaluated was the impact of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill leachate on the geotechnical, mineralogical, long-term hydraulic conductivity and sorptive and diffusive properties of the soils. The effective diffusion coefficient D* value for Na+ (2.69 x 10-10m2/s) in MP3 increased to a peak value in MP1 (3.48 x 10-10m2</s

The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of applying AVIRIS sensor (Airborne Visible/InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) for mapping and quantifying mineralogical components of three Brazilian soils, a reddish Oxisol in São João D'Aliança area (SJA) and a dark reddish brown Oxisol and Ultisol in Niquelândia (NIQ) counties, Goiás State. The study applied the spectral index RCGb [kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) ratio] and was based on spectral absorption features of these two minerals. The RCGb index was developed for the evaluation of weathering degrees of various Brazilian soils and wa

Two new species belonging to the Indo-Pacific gobiid genus Amblygobius are described from mud-bottom habitats. Amblygobius calvatus n. sp. is described on the basis of 9 specimens, 23.7–48.0 mm SL, from the El Nido area of northern Palawan in the Philippines. Diagnostic features for the new species include usual counts of 15 segmented dorsal and anal-fin rays, scales entirely cycloid, no scales on the head (including the side of the nape and upper opercle), 80–86 longitudinal body scales, 24–26 transverse body scales, a strongly lanceolate caudal fin, a grayish-brown color in

Trichonectria calopadiicola, a new lichenicolous fungus from tropical Africa is described. The species is the second member of nectrioid fungi known as parasitic on foliicolous lichens. It is characterized by often aggregated, dark reddish brown, subglobose, richly setose perithecia, covered by obtuse, septate, thick-walled setae, and by hyaline, narrowly fusiform, 1-septate ascospores. The mycoparasite causes evident damages in the ascomata of its host.

A tank farm to contain four oil storage tanks was proposed for an area lying close to the Abonnema Wharf in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The intended tanks would be 25.0m diameter and 13.5m high. For a tank diameter of 25.0m, two boreholes to depth of 30.0m and three cone penetration tests with pore pressure measurements were considered adequate for the subsurface investigation. The subsurface investigation in the tank site disclosed that the upper portion of the soil deposits in the area is composed essentially of Coastal Plain Sands sediments with few intrusions of Mangrove Swamp soils. Abstract In Costa Rica hymenopterans have been collected in all major terrestrial habitats, from the coastal man grove swamps to the peaks of the highest mountains. Although none has yet actually been collected in fresh water, a species of Hydrophylita, a trichogrammatid genus known to attack submerged eggs of dragonflies, has recently been captured in Malaise traps in the country (see Chapter 11.19). The different life zones referred to in Chapter 1 support rather different hymenopterous communities. In the hot, seasonally dry and rather open tropical deciduous forests of the northwest a vari
