Abstract:
The book covers the basic principles of nutrient rationing for poultry. The data on the needs of all types of poultry, taking into account age, in nutrients, minerals and biologically active substances are given. The characteristic of the main feed means and rational norms of their inclusion in the compound feed for poultry are given. Modern data on the role of vitamins, macro- and microelements, enzyme preparations, probiotics, prebiotics, phytobiotics, organic acids, antioxidants, fat emulsifiers and other sources of biologically active substances in poultry nutrition are presented. Attention is paid to the main technological parameters of poultry keeping. The nutritional factors that reduce immunity, as well as the causes of the main diseases associated with the quality of feed, with violations in the rationing of nutrient, mineral and biologically active substances, the technology of feeding and keeping poultry, are described, methods of their prevention are given. Criteria for the adequacy of nutrition and maintenance of a bird to its genetic potential are stated.
The book is intended for specialists and managers of poultry farms, enterprises of the feed industry, researchers, graduate students and students.

Jackson, Richard. Bin Laden’s Ghost and the Epistemological Crises of Counterterrorism. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038860.003.0001.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that despite all the media attention, punditry, scholarly analysis, and official commentary, Osama bin Laden's death remains an essentially meaningless (non-)event. His death is meaningless or without consequence in two main senses of the word. First, it is meaningless in real-world strategic and material terms. For example, as a direct consequence of bin Laden's death, no counterterrorism programs have been scaled back or ended, counterterrorism laws repealed, military or security funding reduced, security agencies scaled down or closed, foreign training programs ended, overseas military forces withdrawn, or military bases closed. Instead, the global counterterrorism effort remains completely unchanged by his death and continues on as it has for the past ten years. Second, and perhaps more importantly, bin Laden's death has generated so many divergent meanings that it has been rendered ultimately meaningless in terms of its analytical consequences, symbolism, and epistemological significance.

Full text
Abstract:
Viral gastroenteritis is a diarrheal disease associated with nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal cramping, myalgias, and low-grade fever. Stools are often described as watery, with bouts of diarrhea and emesis that can occur on an hourly basis. Blood or mucus in the stool is suggestive of a bacterial or parasitic process. Additionally, the presence of fecal leukocytes excludes viral infection, as it is suggestive of colonic inflammation. Treatment is mainly supportive with appropriate hydration, including oral rehydration and/or intravenous fluids, being the key intervention. Specific antiviral agents are not available. Prevention and control of spread are important issues for viral gastroenteritis. Hand washing alone may reduce the spread of infection. The use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and daily disinfection of surfaces with quaternary ammonium wipes has reduced the spread of Norovirus and was found superior to handwashing alone.

Mythen, Monty, and Michael P. W. Grocott. Peri-operative optimization of the high risk surgical patient. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0361.

Full text
Abstract:
Flow-based cardiovascular variables, such as cardiac output and oxygen delivery predict peri-operative outcome better than alternative, predominantly pressure-based measures. Targeting flow-based goals, using fluid boluses with or without additional blood or vasoactive agents in patients undergoing major surgery has been shown to improve outcome in some studies. However, the literature is limited due to a large number of small single-centre studies, and heterogeneity of interventions and outcomes evaluated. Early studies used pulmonary artery catheters to monitor blood flow, but newer studies have used less invasive techniques, such as oesophageal Doppler monitoring or pulse contour analysis. Meta-analysis of the current evidence base suggests that this approach is unlikely to cause harm and may not reduce mortality, but reduces complications and duration of hospital stay. Goal-directed therapy is considered an important element of enhanced recovery packages that have been shown to improve outcome after several types of major elective surgery.

Abstract:
Are we naturally good or bad? This chapter addresses the long-standing question by applying the fresh perspective of evolutionary behavioral biology and introducing the reader to the biological concept of ethical discrimination. From an evolutionary perspective, we are usually good with “us” and usually bad with “them,” whereby us and them are colloquial terms to indicate different degrees of genetic relatedness. With the evolution of complex social structures, genetic relatedness has progressively expanded to include ethnic bonds and common ideological and cultural values. The chapter then reviews the evolution of moral systems, analyzes recent findings from neuroscience on the neural bases of moral behaviors, and illustrates the complex psychological adaptations that have evolved to inform moral choices, including the crucial role of social emotions such as shame, guilt, pride, and empathy. The final section of the chapter faces a problem that many evolutionary scientists have found to be an embarrassment: the cultural evolution of moral and religious systems that have progressively reduced the discriminative limits of goodness, cancelling any distinction between “us” and “them.”

Abstract:
Mental illness is the primary risk factor for suicidal ideation, attempts, and completion. Effective treatment of the psychiatric condition is the foundational strategy to reduce the risk of suicide associated with these conditions, but few medications can be demonstrated to independently reduce the risk of suicide. This chapter will describe how psychopharmacological treatment can be included as a component of bio-psycho-social treatments within the context of a recovery model for suicide prevention. The evidence for medication therapies will be reviewed both for specific behavioral health conditions and for any reduced suicide risk independent of general therapeutic effects to treat underlying conditions. A framework strategy will be described for the integration of evidence-based clinical decision making to provide the most effective treatment that also specifically targets suicide risk for patients.

Columb, Malachy O. Local anaesthetic agents. Edited by Michel M. R. F. Struys. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642045.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
Local anaesthetic agents cause a pharmacologically induced reversible neuropathy characterized by axonal conduction blockade. They act by blocking the sodium ionophore and exhibit membrane stabilizing activity by inhibiting initiation and propagation of action potentials. They are weak bases consisting of three components: a lipophilic aromatic ring, a link, and a hydrophilic amine. The chemical link classifies them as esters or amides. Local anaesthetics diffuse through the axolemma as unionized free-base and block the ionophore in the quaternary ammonium ionized form. The speed of onset of block is therefore dependent on the pKa of the agent and the ambient tissue pH. Esters undergo hydrolysis by plasma esterases and amides are metabolized by hepatic microsomal mixed-function oxidases. Local anaesthetics are bound in the blood to α‎1-acid glycoproteins. Pharmacological potency is dependent on the lipid solubility of the drug as is the potential for systemic toxicity. The blood concentrations required to cause cardiovascular system (CVS) collapse and early central nervous system (CNS) toxicity are used to quantify the CVS:CNS toxicity ratio. Local anaesthetics also have the potential to induce direct neuronal damage. Intravenous lipid emulsion is used for the treatment of systemic toxicity but the scientific evidence is inconsistent. With regard to the pipecoloxylidine local anaesthetics, early evidence indicated that the S- was less toxic than the R-enantiomer. However, clinical research using minimum local analgesic concentration designs suggests that reduced systemic toxicity and motor block sparing is mainly explained by potency rather than enantiomerism.

Full text
Abstract:
Cardiovascular primary prevention is a coordinated set of actions at community and individual level aimed at eradicating, eliminating, or compressing at later ages the impact of cardiovascular diseases and their related disability. Its aim is healthy ageing. Cardiovascular epidemiology has elucidated the role of cardiovascular risk factors, forming the basis of strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk and subsequent disease. There is evidence that cardiovascular primary prevention works if three strategies are implemented together: a population strategy (particularly through a widespread adoption of healthy lifestyles) which aims to keep everyone at low risk from infancy and reduces the cardiovascular risk profile of the whole community; an individualized high-risk strategy through lifestyle changes also prophylactic evidence-based drugs if necessary; and an individualized intermediate-risk strategy which may benefit from non-invasive assessment of subclinical disease and end organ damage.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the challenges of identifying preventive interventions as effective and of assisting community coalitions to learn about and select EBIs that are a good fit for their community. The scientific standards used to determine intervention effectiveness by various lists of “what works” are compared, and the Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development is highlighted as the database used by coalitions implementing the CTC system. The importance of community resource assessments is also discussed, including the steps taken by CTC coalitions to evaluate their current resources, identify gaps in the delivery of preventive interventions, and determine if current services need to be expanded or new EBIs should be implemented.
