Abstract:
Reed Smoot and Willis Hawley are two deceased members of Congress the world loves to hate. Their principal legislative achievement, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930, continues to evoke such disapproving adjectives as “infamous” and “notorious.” To most Americans, that act, which incidentally remains the fundamental tariff law of the U.S., conjures up images of rising tariff barriers, beggar-thy-neighbor nationalism, and ruinous trade wars.

Abstract:
SummaryThe Reed Parrotbill Paradoxornis heudei is an endemic reedbed-inhabiting passerine of east Asia. In the Shanghai municipality, which harbours significant populations of this species, almost all reedbed surfaces are annually harvested. Furthermore, the reedbeds are being invaded by Smooth Cordgrass Spartina alterniflora, an introduced species that can outcompete the native Common Reed Phragmites australis. In this paper, we have shown that Reed Parrotbills do not nest in areas dominated by Smooth Cordgrass and avoid using them. In the areas that are primarily composed of Common Reed, the densities of birds are higher in the unharvested sections. The birds appear to select nesting sites with low Smooth Cordgrass densities, tall reed stems, and relatively equal densities of both dry and green stems. Reed harvesting activity results in vegetation that is too low for bird nesting. However, no nests were found in areas where the reeds had not been harvested for several years and had high densities of dry reed stems; these results could be attributed to the fact that the high density of broken stems reduced the vegetation cover. On the basis of our results, we recommend implementation of four years harvesting-cycle rotation and avoidance of reclamation in reedbeds which have not been invaded by Smooth Cordgrass.

Abstract:
Reed beds represent an important habitat for the survival of birds by providing favorable foraging and reproduction conditions. Reed management, as a traditional agricultural activity, primarily includes water level control and vegetation removal by cutting. Red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) is one of the most endangered cranes, and their population continues to decline due to habitat loss caused by artificial activities. A lack of research relating to how reed management affects crane habitat distribution patterns throughout the wintering period hinders our ability to offer conservation recommendations. In the present study, we explored the effect of reed management on the habitat distribution patterns and analyzed the food resources of red-crowned crane in the Yancheng National Nature Reserve (YNNR). According to the reed management activities in December, we divided the wintering period into two phases: the preharvest period and the postharvest period. Throughout the wintering period, the number of cranes recorded in the common seepweed (Suaeda glauca) tidal flats remained stable, but cranes were rarely recorded in the smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) tidal flats and aquaculture fish ponds. The number of cranes, however, showed a noticeable fluctuation in the reed beds during the two periods. Before the reed harvest, only a small proportion of cranes were recorded in the reed beds (relative abundance = 2.9%). However, more cranes (relative abundance = 61.0%) were recorded after the reed harvest. Water was introduced from adjacent rivers and fish ponds to submerge the cut reed beds. Changes in potential animal food resources (items and biomass) might be one of the vital reasons for the preference of cranes to the postharvest reed beds. Our results suggest that traditional reed management in the YNNR could benefit this flagship crane species that winters in the wetland system. However, as reed harvest has been forbidden in the core zone for conservation purposes since 2016, further research is needed to verify whether forbidding the harvest of reeds is reasonable.

Abstract:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or “Mormon Church,” emerged during the first half of the 19th century while America was undergoing social and religious changes. Right from the outset, Joseph Smith, the prophet-founder, set the Church in a radical opposition, “protesting” the dogma of traditional Christianity as they had been defined and accepted for centuries. He attracted the ire of the “established Churches” of Evangelical Protestantism. In spite of the profound Americanness of his religion, it was labeled un-american and his followers were persecuted, driven out, and forced to build their “Zion” on the Frontier, and then in the West, on the margins of American society. Unlike several other religious groups and utopian movements, the “Mormons” managed to turn their marginalization into strength, developing thereby traits that made them “a peculiar people.” Yet, they also realized that to escape persecutions, they had to be at the center of the nation’s politics. The nomination of Mitt Romney by the Republican Party for the 2012 presidential election testifies to their success. How did that come about? Romney was also the object of a sturdy religious opposition during the Party’s primaries that reminded the ones set up by the Protestants in the cases of Al Smith (1928) and of John F. Kennedy (1960). How does one account for this refusal to see a Mormon in the White House? In this dissertation, we answer these questions, and to many more, particularly as we illustrate the fact that Romney, J. F. Kennedy and Al Smith had a predecessor in Reed Smoot, a Mormon apostle whose election in 1902 to the U.S. Senate set the tone for the greatest religiously and politically-motivated trial ever in American history

Dowse, Richard J. "The Laie Hawaii Temple: A History from Its Conception to Completion." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3352.

Full text
Abstract:
The Laie Hawaii Temple majestically overlooks the beaches of Oahu and has stood as an emblem of the Latter-day Saint faith to the world since 1919. Although the structure is iconic and highly significant to Latter-day Saints, a comprehensive history of the Laie Hawaii Temple has never been published. This thesis provides such a history from the conception of the temple until its dedication. The history of this particular temple is important for several reasons. At its dedication, the temple in Laie became the fifth operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the first dedicated temple outside of the state of Utah (following the exodus) and outside of North America. It was also the first temple built in one of the missions of the Church. It was a pioneering temple as one of the first that catered to a large number of patrons from different cultures speaking different languages. Its multi-cultural, multi-lingual integration is something that would not be seen in other temples for several decades. Over the years, the temple and the attractions built around it have drawn millions of other visitors as well. Its location has made it an internationally recognized edifice and a valuable tool for the Church to introduce its message to the world. This history is also compelling because of what the temple in Laie, Hawaii represents in terms of the Latter-day Saint conception of the doctrine of the "gathering." As the first temple built outside of the traditional centers of Mormon colonization, this temple became an early prototype of a method of gathering that does not appear to begin taking hold Church-wide until the mid-twentieth century. Ahead of its time in other ways, the temple was built in a place where, according to the thinking of the time, Church membership was not yet sizable enough to warrant a temple. This thesis explains why the temple was built in Hawaii. These aspects of the temple's history produced ramifications that continue to impact the Church today, nearly 100 years later. As with many temples, a folk history of oral tradition has developed around the story of the Laie Hawaii Temple. This thesis will also provide a review of the historical record and offer clarity in sorting through that tradition.

Abstract: This dissertation presents a contribution to the study of synchronization in Electric Power Systems, focusing Distributed Generation. The conditions for operation of a distributed generator in parallel with the grid will be analyzed and applicable methodologies of synchronism will be presented. Different algorithms proposed for Power Electronics Applications and Power Quality Analysis can be used for this intention. Initially, this work presents a synthesis of the existing types of alternative generation and their characteristics. Considering that in Brazil, up to this moment, does not exist a specific legislation for distributed generation, the international main applicable norms about synchronization and connection of the generator will be exposed, including security aspects, such as islanding conditions. Each of the chosen algorithms will be studied to observe its dynamic response, accuracy and robustness in presence of harmonic distortions or transients in the utility voltage, according to the adjusted parameters. Finally, simulation results of a characteristic industrial plant will be presented. The utility system supplies a load, which will draw power also from a local generator, connected to this grid, with the aid of the studied synchronism algorithms. Experimental results will confirm the possibility of implementation of these techniques

"Mormons and the World's Fair 1893: A Study of Religious and Cultural Agency and Transformation." Doctoral diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.14679.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: My dissertation project, Mormons at the World's Fair: A Study of Religious and Cultural Agency and Transformation looks at a pivotal period of transition within the American religious and political national culture (1880-1907). Using Mormonism as an important focal point of national controversy and cultural change, this dissertation looks at the interconnections between Mormon transitions and the larger national transformations then under way in what historians call the "progressive" era. Prominent scholars have recognized the 1893 World's Fair as an important moment that helped initiate the "dawning" of religious pluralism in America. This national response to American religious diversity, however, is limited to a nineteenth-century historiographical framework, which made real religious pluralism in the next century more difficult. Bringing together into one narrative the story of the anti-polygamy crusades of the 1880s, the ambivalent presence (and non presence) of Mormonism at the World's Fair of 1893, and the drawn-out US Senate Hearings and ultimate victory of Mormon apostle and Senator Reed Smoot in 1907, this dissertation offers new insights into the meaning and limitations of American religious liberty, the dynamics of minority agency, as well as a deeper understanding of America's developing national identity.

Thakur, Divya active 21st century. "Adaptation, gyro-ree stabilization, and smooth angular velocity observers for attitude tracking control applications." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/25881.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the problem of rigid-body attitude tracking control under three scenarios of high relevance to many aerospace guidance and control applications: adaptive attitude-tracking control law development for a spacecraft with time-varying inertia parameters, velocity-free attitude stabilization using only vector measurements for feedback, and smooth angular velocity observer design for attitude tracking in the absence of angular velocity measurements. Inertia matrix changes in spacecraft applications often occur due to fuel depletion or mass displacement in a flexible or deployable spacecraft. As such, an adaptive attitude control algorithm that delivers consistent performance when faced with uncertain time-varying inertia parameters is of significant interest. This dissertation presents a novel adaptive control algorithm that directly compensates for inertia variations that occur as either pure functions of the control input, or as functions of time and/or the state. Another important problem considered in this dissertation pertains to rigid-body attitude stabilization of a spacecraft when only a set of inertial sensor measurements are available for feedback. A novel gyro-free attitude stabilization solution is presented that directly utilizes unit vector measurements obtained from inertial sensors without relying on observers to reconstruct the spacecraft's attitude or angular velocity. As the third major contribution of this dissertation, the problem of attitude tracking control in the absence of angular velocity measurements is investigated through angular velocity observer (estimator) design. A new angular velocity observer is presented which is smoothed and ensures asymptotic convergence of the estimation errors irrespective of the initial true states of the spacecraft. The combined implementation of a separately designed proportional-derivative type controller using estimates generated by the observer results in global asymptotic stability of the overall closed-loop tracking error dynamics. Accordingly, a separation-type property is established for the rigid-body attitude dynamics, the first such result to the author's best knowledge, using a smooth (switching-free) observer formulation.

Cunha, Mickaël Rocha da. "A policy-based framework towards smooth adaptive playback for dynamic video streaming over HTTP." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/18215.

Abstract:
The growth of video streaming in the Internet in the last few years has been highly significant and promises to continue in the future. This fact is related to the growth of Internet users and especially with the diversification of the end-user devices that happens nowadays. Earlier video streaming solutions didn´t consider adequately the Quality of Experience from the user’s perspective. This weakness has been since overcame with the DASH video streaming. The main feature of this protocol is to provide different versions, in terms of quality, of the same content. This way, depending on the status of the network infrastructure between the video server and the user device, the DASH protocol automatically selects the more adequate content version. Thus, it provides to the user the best possible quality for the consumption of that content. The main issue with the DASH protocol is associated to the loop, between each client and video server, which controls the rate of the video stream. In fact, as the network congestion increases, the client requests to the server a video stream with a lower rate. Nevertheless, due to the network latency, the DASH protocol in a standalone way may not be able to stabilize the video stream rate at a level that can guarantee a satisfactory QoE to the end-users. Network programming is a very active and popular topic in the field of network infrastructures management. In this area, the Software Defined Networking paradigm is an approach where a network controller, with a relatively abstracted view of the physical network infrastructure, tries to perform a more efficient management of the data path. The current work studies the combination of the DASH protocol and the Software Defined Networking paradigm in order to achieve a more adequate sharing of the network resources that could benefit both the users’ QoE and network management.

This chapter analyses Roosevelt’s domestic policies and his personal family life as president. His 1901 dinner with black educator Booker T. Washington and his 1902 settling of a coal strike endeared him to reformers. In 1904 he won election in his own right. As a tolerant Protestant, Roosevelt appointed the first Jew to a cabinet position in 1906, supported the Mormon senator Reed Smoot, and defended the Unitarianism of his hand-picked successor William Howard Taft. At the same time he faced backlash for attempting to remove “In God We Trust” from the national coinage. Theodore and Edith Roosevelt also raised their children in the Christian faith and quietly encouraged their devotion.

Abstract:
A series of experimental investigations with a stringent measurement method on the transient-/steady-state heat transfer behavior for confined smooth surfaces with slot jet impingement have been successfully conducted. From the results, a generalized correlation is proposed to represent the distributions of normalized transient convective heat flux. The highest heat transfer during the transient period occurs at the surface center of confined heated smooth or extended surface. The transient local Nusselt number decreases along the distance from the surface center toward the surface edge. The transient-/steady-state local and average Nusselt numbers are almost independent of Grs, and they are more significantly affected by ReD as compared with H/W. They will increase with increasing ReD. Maximum local and average Nusselt numbers can be found between H/W = 3 and H/W = 5. The effects of Grs and H/W on the dimensionless local Nusselt number distribution are insignificant; and the distribution can be expressed as a generalized bell-shaped profile, which is only dependent of ReD. Finally, a new composite correlation of steady-state average Nusselt number for mixed convection from confined smooth due to slot jet impingement and buoyancy are presented.

Abstract:
A series of experimental investigations with a stringent measurement method on the fluid flow characteristics of slot jet without or with a target surface have been successfully conducted. From all the fluid velocity data measured in the present study, the experimental conditions have been verified to be spanwise-symmetrically maintained and the results have been achieved in a spanwise-symmetric form. Three types of jet configuration without or with target surface are investigated: (A) Confined Slot Jet without Target Surfaces – the fluid flow parameters studied in the present investigation is the jet Reynolds number (ReD). Its ranges are ReD=506-1517. (B) Confined Slot Jet with Smooth Surfaces – the fluid flow parameters studied in the present investigation include the ratio of jet separation distance (H) to nozzle width (W) and the jet Reynolds number (ReD). The ranges of the relevant parameters are H/W=2–10 and ReD=504–1526. (C) Confined Slot Jet with Extended Surfaces – the fluid flow parameters studied include the ratio of jet separation distance (H) to nozzle width (W), the Reynolds number (ReD) and the ratio of extended surface height (Hes) to nozzle width (W). Their ranges are H/W=3–10, Hes/W=0.74-3.40 and ReD=501–1547. The flow characteristics such as the local mean streamwise velocity distribution, mean streamwise velocity decay along jet centerline, local jet turbulence intensity distribution, and turbulence intensities along jet centerline have been presented and discussed in the study.

Abstract:
The heat transfer rate from a smooth wall in an internal cooling passage can be significantly enhanced by using a convex patterned surface on the opposite wall of the passage. This design is particularly effective for a design that requires the heat transfer surface to be free of any augmenting features (smooth). Heat transfer coefficients on the smooth wall in a rectangular channel, which had convexities on the opposite wall were experimentally investigated. Friction factors were also measured to assess the thermal performance. Relative clearances (δ/d) between the convexities and the smooth wall of 0, 0.024, and 0.055 were investigated in a Reynolds number (ReHD) range from 15,000 to 35,000. The heat transfer coefficients were measured in the thermally developed region using a transient thermochromic liquid crystal technique. The clearance gap between the convexities and the smooth wall adversely affected the heat transfer enhancement (NuHD). The friction factors (f), measured in the aerodynamically developed region, were largest for the cases of no clearance (δ/d = 0). The average heat transfer enhancement (NuHD) was also largest for the cases of no clearance (δ/d = 0), as high as 3.08 times at a Reynolds number of 11,456 in relative to that (Nuo) of an entirely smooth channel. The normalized Nusselt numbers (NuHD/Nuo), as well as the normalized friction factors (f/fo), for all three cases, decreased with Reynolds numbers. However, the decay rate of the friction factor ratios (f/fo) with Reynolds numbers was lower than that of the normalized Nusselt numbers. For all three cases investigated, the thermal performance ((NuHD/Nuo) /(f/fo)1/3) values were within 5% to each other. The heat transfer enhancement using a convex patterned surface was thermally more effective at a relatively low Reynolds numbers (less than 20,000 for δ/d = 0) than that of a smooth channel.

Abstract:
Flow over smooth cylinder at very high Reynolds number, ReD = 2×106, is simulated using the unsteady Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) turbulence model. Flow structures and vortex shedding were accurately captured. Grid sensitivity study was performed to compare averaged drag coefficient for a conformal fine mesh as well as non-conformal coarse mesh. Predicted value of drag coefficient was within 8% of the experimental value and Strouhal number compared well with the experimental observations.

Abstract:
Hot water extract of sugar and red maple bark was added to maple syrup and dried by freeze (FD) and vacuum drum drying (VD) techniques. Addition of maple bark extracts to syrup helped to develop polyphenols-enriched maple sugar. X-ray diffraction revealed that sugar obtained from FD was amorphous in nature, while crystalline when dried by VD. Furthermore, the observation of maple sugar samples under scanning electron microscopy showed smooth and porous surface for FD sugar, while rough and grainy surface for VD sugar. Hausner ratio indicated that sugar produced by VD showed better flow characteristics than FD sugar. Keywords: drying techniques; maple syrup; phenolics; microstructure

Abstract:
Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a relatively Common reactive exophytic lesion of the oral cavity. The influence of hormones has been suggested as contributory factor in PGCG development and predominance of these lesions in young females as well as some previously reported pregnancy related cases support this belief. It has been observed that majority of lesions present in the 4th decade of life, when hormonal changes are more pronounced. Cailluette and Mattar in their study found that peripheral giant cell granuloma are under the influence of the ovarian hormones. However Chambers and Spector suggested peripheral giant cell granuloma to be enhanced by pregnancy rather than being pregnancy dependent. The responsiveness of gingiva to these hormones along with the immunosuppressive actions of the hormones contributes to the growth of the lesion. Clinically, PGCGs may present as polypoid or nodular lesions, predominantly bluish red with a smooth shiny or mamillated surface. This poster will review the literature available on the association of Massive Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma With Pregnancy with focus on possible causes of PGCG during pregnancy.

Abstract:
The Seto Inland Sea, the largest enclosed sea in Japan, has unrivalled beauty of archipelago and abundant nature under temperate climate with light rain falls, and the people has been benefitted from the sea ever since the early times. We however experienced sever water pollution problems caused by rapid industrialization and the loss of seaweed bed and tidal flat due to reclamation projects particularly in the period of the high economic growth in 1960s. To resolve these issues, we have carried out water quality improvement programs including reduction of pollutant load based upon the Water Pollution Control Law and the Law concerning Special Measures for Conservation of the Environment of the Seto Inland Sea. As a result, water quality has improved as compared with Tokyo Bay and other enclosed seas. However, there are still severe problems including the occurrence of red tide and oxygen deficient water mass in some areas in the Seto Inland Sea. Securing the bio-diversity, bio-productivity and smooth nutrient circulation are also important. Under these situations, the Law and the Basic Plan for Conservation of the Environment of the Seto Inland Sea were revised in 2015. With these law and plan, it has been made clear that our principal objective is to make the Seto Inland Sea a “Bountiful Sea” through conservation of water quality with bio-diversity and bio-productivity. Also the importance to implement environmental measures corresponding local differences in the respective region and seasonality were indicated. In order to actualize “the Beautiful and Bountiful Seto Inland Sea”, we need to implement environmental water management as follows. 1. Environmental conservation, restoration and creation of coastal areas. 2. Conservation and management of water quality. 3. Conservation of natural and cultural landscapes. 4. Sustainable utilization of fishery resources. Ministry of the Environment, Japan will continue to conduct corresponding programs based on scientific survey and evaluation on conservation/restoration of seaweed bed, tidal flat, smooth circulation of nutrients.

Financial Stability Report - First Semester of 2020. Banco de la República de Colombia, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/rept-estab-fin.1sem.eng-2020.

Full text
Abstract:
In the face of the multiple shocks currently experienced by the domestic economy (resulting from the drop in oil prices and the appearance of a global pandemic), the Colombian financial system is in a position of sound solvency and adequate liquidity. At the same time, credit quality has been recovering and the exposure of credit institutions to firms with currency mismatches has declined relative to previous episodes of sudden drops in oil prices. These trends are reflected in the recent fading of red and blue tonalities in the performance and credit risk segments of the risk heatmaps in Graphs A and B.1 Naturally, the sudden, unanticipated change in macroeconomic conditions has caused the appearance of vulnerabilities for short-term financial stability. These vulnerabilities require close and continuous monitoring on the part of economic authorities. The main vulnerability is the response of credit and credit risk to a potential, temporarily extreme macroeconomic situation in the context of: (i) recently increased exposure of some banks to household sector, and (ii) reductions in net interest income that have led to a decline in the profitability of the banking business in the recent past. Furthermore, as a consequence of greater uncertainty and risk aversion, occasional problems may arise in the distribution of liquidity between agents and financial markets. With regards to local markets, spikes have been registered in the volatility of public and private fixed income securities in recent weeks that are consistent with the behavior of the international markets and have had a significant impact on the liquidity of those instruments (red portions in the most recent past of some market risk items on the map in Graph A). In order to adopt a forward-looking approach to those vulnerabilities, this Report presents a stress test that evaluates the resilience of credit institutions in the event of a hypothetical scenario thatseeks to simulate an extreme version of current macroeconomic conditions. The scenario assumes a hypothetical negative growth that is temporarily strong but recovers going into the middle of the coming year and has extreme effects on credit quality. The results suggest that credit institutions have the ability to withstand a significant deterioration in economic conditions in the short term. Even though there could be a strong impact on credit, liquidity, and profitability under the scenario being considered, aggregate capital ratios would probably remain at above their regulatory limits over the horizon of a year. In this context, the recent measures taken by both Banco de la República and the Office of the Financial Superintendent of Colombia that are intended to help preserve the financial stability of the Colombian economy become highly relevant. In compliance with its constitutional objectives and in coordination with the financial system’s security network, Banco de la República will continue to closely monitor the outlook for financial stability at this juncture and will make the decisions that are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the economy, facilitate the flow of sufficient credit and liquidity resources, and further the smooth functioning of the payment system.
