Nothman, Joel. "Grounding event references in news." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10609.

Abstract:
Events are frequently discussed in natural language, and their accurate identification is central to language understanding. Yet they are diverse and complex in ontology and reference; computational processing hence proves challenging. News provides a shared basis for communication by reporting events. We perform several studies into news event reference. One annotation study characterises each news report in terms of its update and topic events, but finds that topic is better consider through explicit references to background events. In this context, we propose the event linking task which—analogous to named entity linking or disambiguation—models the grounding of references to notable events. It defines the disambiguation of an event reference as a link to the archival article that first reports it. When two references are linked to the same article, they need not be references to the same event. Event linking hopes to provide an intuitive approximation to coreference, erring on the side of over-generation in contrast with the literature. The task is also distinguished in considering event references from multiple perspectives over time. We diagnostically evaluate the task by first linking references to past, newsworthy events in news and opinion pieces to an archive of the Sydney Morning Herald. The intensive annotation results in only a small corpus of 229 distinct links. However, we observe that a number of hyperlinks targeting online news correspond to event links. We thus acquire two large corpora of hyperlinks at very low cost. From these we learn weights for temporal and term overlap features in a retrieval system. These noisy data lead to significant performance gains over a bag-of-words baseline. While our initial system can accurately predict many event links, most will require deep linguistic processing for their disambiguation.

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is the study of the encoding of references andconcurrency in Linear Logic. Our perspective is to demonstrate the capabilityof Linear Logic to encode side-effects to make it a viable, formalized and wellstudied compilation target for functional languages in the future. The keynotion we develop is that of routing areas: a family of proof nets whichcorrespond to a fragment of differential linear logic and which implementscommunication primitives. We develop routing areas as a parametrizable deviceand study their theory. We then illustrate their expressivity by translating aconcurrent λ-calculus featuring concurrency, references and replication to afragment of differential nets. To this purpose, we introduce a language akin toAmadio’s concurrent λ-calculus, but with explicit substitutions for bothvariables and references. We endow this language with a type and effect systemand we prove termination of well-typed terms by a mix of reducibility and anew interactive technique. This intermediate language allows us to prove asimulation and an adequacy theorem for the translation

Abstract:
A Voltage Reference is a pivotal block in several mixed-signal and radio-frequency applications, for instance, data converters, PLL's and power converters. The most used CMOS implementation for voltage references is the Bandgap circuit due to its highpredictability, and low dependence of the supply voltage and temperature of operation. This work studies the Bandgap Voltage References (BGR). The most relevant and the traditional topologies usually employed to implement Bandgap Voltage References are investigated, and the limitations of these architectures are discussed. A survey is also presented, discussing the most relevant issues and performance metrics for BGR, including, high-accuracy, low-voltage and low-power operation, as well as the output noise of Bandgap References fabricated in submicrometer technologies. Moreover, a comprehensive investigation on the impact of fabrication process effects and noise on the reference voltage is presented. It is shown that output noise can limit the accuracy of the BGR and trim circuits. To support and develop our work, three BGR´s were designed using the IBM 0.18 Micron 7RF process with a supply voltage of 1.8 V. The layouts of these circuits were also designed to provide post-extracted layout information and electrical simulation results. This work provides a comprehensive discussion on the structure and design practices for Bandgap References.

Smith, Daniel Wayne. "Preserving Unique References in Java Lists." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36343.

Abstract:
The Java collection framework introduces aliasing when objects are added to and accessed from collections. This thesis describes a list component implemented in Java that preserves unique references of objects in the list, thereby avoiding undesired aliasing. We compared the running time of our list with three other lists from Java collections (Java collection framework, Google, and Functional Java) in five different applications. We found that the performance of our list was usually slightly slower than the performance of the Java list, but often much faster than the Google and Functional Java lists. We also compared the reasoning complexity of our list with Javaâ s list by creating tracing tables for a method from a towers-of-Hanoi application and comparing the number of tokens in the table using our list with the number of tokens in the table using the Java list. We found that the number of tokens in the tracing table using the Java list was much higher than the number of tokens in the table using our list. We argue that this result will occur in any table for applications that use mutable list objects.

Abstract:
Despite intensive research on the Generation of Referring Expressions (GRE), many GRE algorithms either lack empirical backing, or are motivated by concerns which arguably shift their focus away from the crucial problem, which is to generate natural descriptions, much as a person would generate them in a comparable situation. This problem becomes more acute in the case of plural reference. This thesis focuses on the generation of plurals, with particular attention to the semantic heart of the problem, that is, content determination. The first part presents an in-depth theoretical and empirical evaluation of the state of the art of GRE, and makes three main contributions.  The main contributions are:  a) The construction of a semantically transparent corpus of singular and plural descriptions; b) An empirical investigation into reference by human authors in this corpus; and c) An evaluation study on various existing algorithms, the first to explicitly address plurals. The second part of the thesis focuses directly on plurals.  It begins with a test of the similarity hypothesis on corpus data, leading to the development of a new algorithm which addresses the issues of similarity and conceptual categorisation.  This work is generalised to pluralities in discourse, starting from the hypothesis that pluralities should be conceptually coherent, that is, should conceptualise entities from the same perspective.  The investigation of this hypothesis, through five psycholinguistic experiments leads to an integrated framework for content determination in GRE.  Among the contributions of this second part of the thesis are: a) The use of an experimental psycholinguistic methodology to test hypothesis that are relevant to generation; b) The development of a novel approach to content determination that seeks to satisfy conceptual coherence through the use of corpus-derived similarity metrics.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 95-96).
This thesis investigates packaging effects on precision bandgap voltage references used in LTC switching regulators. Packaging stress causes a mean offset and room temperature distribution widening of the bandgap reference output voltage, as well as inconsistent temperature characteristics. Bandgap references with and without a proprietary stress-relief mechanism were compared to determine the impact of packaging stress on reference performance. References without stress-relief showed a mean offset of -2.3mV and spread of 10mV, while references with stress-relief showed a mean offset of -2.0mV and spread of 3.6mV. References with stress relief exhibited more consistent temperature coefficients than references without stress relief. A test chip was fabricated to allow measurement of VBE and AVBE within the bandgap reference. Parts with stress-relief showed tighter VBE and AVBE distributions, as well as more favorable temperature characteristics. The experiments in this thesis show that stress-relief is effective at improving bandgap reference performance.

Frater, Eric, and Eric Frater. "Optical Alignment with CGH Phase References." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621452.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing field of high-order aspheric and freeform optical fabrication has inspired the creation of optical surfaces and systems which are difficult to align. Advances in optical alignment technology are critical to fabricating and integrating aspheric components in advanced optical systems. This dissertation explores the field of optical alignment with a computer-generated hologram (CGH) used as a reference. A CGH is a diffractive optic which may be used to create a desired phase profile across a beam of light, project irradiance patterns, or serve as a mask for an incident beam. The alignment methods presented in this dissertation are concerned with the use of a CGH to create reference phase profiles, or "wavefronts" , in a beam. In one application a set of axisymmetric CGH references are co-aligned. Each CGH has also been aligned to an aspheric mirror so the co-alignment of the CGH references is also a co-alignment of the aspheric mirrors. Another application is concerned with aligning an interferometer to test an aspheric mirror surface. The interferometer measures a "null" interference pattern when its wavefront accommodates a known surface profile. In this alignment application the CGH creates wavefronts which accommodate a known set of small spherical reference features at the test surface. An interference null from all the "phase fiducial" reference features indicates an aligned projection of the CGH. The CGH co-alignment method is implemented on a 4-mirror prime focus corrector known as the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Wide Field Corrector (HET WFC). It is shown that this method was very successful for centration alignment of some mirrors, whereas mechanical stability was the hardware limitation for other degrees of freedom. The additional alignment methods used in this project are described in detail and the expected alignment of the HET WFC is reported. The fabrication, characterization and application of spherical phase fiducials is demonstrated in a CGH-corrected Fizeau test prototype. It is shown that these reference features achieve <±1.5µm transverse alignment precision. A pair of phase fiducials is also applied to constrain the clocking and magnification of a projected wavefront. Fabrication and coordinate measurement of the features present the dominant challenges in these demonstrations.

Kinde, Todd M. "The influence of Isaiah in Matthew 1-4." Thesis, University of Chester, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/621875.

Abstract:
This study traces the four Isaianic references in Matthew 1-4 to identify their influence in the structure and theology of Matthew's Gospel. Isaiah distinctively contributes to the parallel nature of the narratives in the structure of Matthew 1-12 and particularly to the structural unity of Matthew 1-4. Further, the Abrahamic background in Isaiah contributes to Matthew's "Son of Abraham" motif. The second chapter identifies the placement of the Isaianic references in Matthew and offers an alternative view of Matthew's macrostructure. Similarly, the integral unity of Matthew 1-4 is supported by parallel themes and plotlines. The strategic placement of Isaianic references supports this proposed structure. The study proceeds with a chapter devoted to each of the four Isaianic references in Matthew 1-4. The study's intertextual methodology observes the reference's text form, Isaianic context, reference in Jewish sources, placement in the Matthean chapter, Matthean context, and a summary of Isaiah's structural and Christological influence. Two appendixes accompany the research: one identifies the Abrahamic background in Isaiah 1-12, and another reevaluates the premise of a new Moses typology in Matthew. Isaianic references influence the narrative parallelism in Matthew 1-4, highlighting the calling motif, and confirming the preaching ministry of John and Jesus. Theologically, the Isaianic references and allusions echo in Matthew 1-4 to inform Matthew's Son of Abraham Christology. As the Son of Abraham, Jesus recapitulates Israel's history, following the paradigm of the patriarch Abraham.

He, D. "References to graphical objects in interactive multimodal queries." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.652279.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a computational model for interpreting natural language expressions in an interactive multimodal query system integrating both natural language text and graphic displays. The primary concern of the model is to interpret expressions that might involve graphical attributes and expressions whose referents could be objects on the screen. Graphical objects on the screen are used to visualise entities in the application domain and their attributes (in short, domain entities and domain attributes). This is why graphical objects are treated as descriptions of those domain entities/attributes in the literature. However, graphical objects and their attributes are visible during the interaction, and are thus known by the participants of the interaction. Therefore, they themselves should be part of the mutual knowledge of the interaction. This poses some interesting problems in language processing. As part of the mutual knowledge graphical attributes could be used in expressions, and graphical objects could be referred to by expressions. In consequences, there could be ambiguities about whether an attribute in an expression belongs to a graphical object or to a domain entity. There could also be ambiguities about the referent of an expression is a graphical object or a domain entity. The main contributions of this thesis consist of analysing the above ambiguities, designing, implementing and testing a computational model and a demonstrational system for resolving these ambiguities. Firstly, a structure and corresponding terminology are set up, so these ambiguities can be clarified as ambiguities derived from referring to different databases, the screen or the application domain (in short, source ambiguities). Secondly, a meaning representation language is designed which explicitly represents the information about which database an attribute/entity comes from. Several linguistic regularities inside and among referring expressions are described so that they can be used as heuristics in the ambiguity resolution. Thirdly, a computational model based on constraint satisfaction is constructed to resolve simultaneously some reference ambiguities and source ambiguities.

Abstract:
There is little research specifically examining fast-pitch softball pitchers. However of the few studies completed, pitchers have been reported to exhibit a high incidence of injury. How and why these pitchers are suffering from injuries has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the injuries occurring to collegiate softball pitchers and factors that may influence these injuries such as demographic, pitching, training, and injury information.A cross-sectional survey of collegiate softball pitchers from Divisions I, II, and III was conducted using InQsit, a web-based survey system. Instructions on how to complete a web-based survey was sent and completed over a two-week period, by 181 Division I, II, and III collegiate softball pitchers. The survey was composed of questions addressing: 1) demographic information, 2) pitching and game data, 3) training program information, and 4) injury reporting. The results showed that demographic information, pitching and game data, and training were not statistically significant (p<0.05) in relation to injury. Among the 131 reported injuries, 36 were acute, 92 chronic, and 3 unspecified. Of the 92 chronic/overuse injuries, 10 were Grade I, 30 Grade II, 39 Grade III, and 13 Grade IV. Of the total injuries, 80 were a direct result from pitching, with 36 relating to the shoulder and 17 to the lower back. Among the injured pitchers, 109 took Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs, 140 used modalities, 11 received surgeries, and 95 saw additional specialists. This study revealed that a high percentage (72.8%) of collegiate pitchers are suffering injuries across the nation and more research focused on this area is needed. In addition, coaches need to continue to be informed of ways they can improve the health and training programs of their pitchers.

There are several approaches to defining a formal semantics of a programming language. The main established ones are operational, denotational and axiomatic semantics. The first two rely on defining an explicit model, whereas the latter one is based on postulating relevant properties of the language in terms of axioms. Particularly, in a purely algebraic approach the axioms take the form of conditional equations (typically denoted as programming laws) that relate the language constructs. Without requiring an explicit model, the advantage of the algebraic approach is incrementality: the language can be extended and the laws tend to remain valid, provided the new constructs do not interfere with the behaviour of the original ones. Algebraic laws have been proposed to uncover interesting properties of several programming paradigms: imperative, logic, functional, concurrent and object oriented, among others. As for the other paradigms, there is a comprehensive set of laws for object oriented constructs, but these are restricted to a language with copy semantics; some laws to deal with references have also been proposed, but these are tailored to specific applications, and are far from being comprehensive. In general, formal reasoning with references has been a persistent challenge and algebraic approaches usually have avoided including them in programming languages. We propose a set of algebraic laws for reasoning about object oriented programs with a reference semantics. First we focus on sequential imperative programs that use object references like in Java. The theory is based on previous work by adding laws to cope with object references. The incrementality of the algebraic method is fundamental; with a few exceptions, existing laws for copy semantics are entirely reused, as they are not affected by the reference semantics. As an evidence of relative completeness, we show that any program can be transformed, through the use of our laws, to a normal form which simulates it using an explicit heap with copy semantics. Soundness is addressed by illustrating how some of the laws can be proved in a relational semantics for a subset of the language. We extend the theory of imperative programs for an object oriented language with the usual constructs: additional imperative commands with references, classes with inheritance and subtyping, visibility control, dynamic binding, type tests and downcasts. Algebraic laws are proposed for these new constructs. In order to illustrate the expressiveness of the laws for the object oriented language, we characterize and prove a set of refactorings from Fowler’s catalog. These are contrasted with previous work that formalized refactorings in the context of copy semantics.

Most mainstream programming languages support finalizers and weak references. In spite of that, these abstractions are still modestly known by programmers in general. Even among language designers there seems to be no common view on how to define their semantics, and language implementations certainly reflect that. In this thesis we explore the concepts of finalizer and weak reference by discussing several important issues that, as far as we know, have not been explored by other authors. After presenting a survey on how finalizers and weak references are supported by actual programming languages, we thoroughly examine their semantics and discuss alternative implementation strategies. We also use an operational approach to develop a formal model for reasoning about garbage collection and its interaction with client programs. By explicitly representing low-level details, such as heap memory and its addresses, we were able to clearly specify memory management actions, and prove several important memory-related language invariants. Using this model we describe a formal semantics for finalizers and weak references, exploring some of its many subtleties. We believe that the topics covered here can serve as a relevant reference for further investigations, and also help to guide actual implementations.

My thesis investigates using a graphical representation of user interfaces - screenshots - as a direct visual reference to support various kinds of applications. We have built several systems to demonstrate and validate this idea in domains like searching documentation, GUI automation and testing, and cross-device information migration. In particular, Sikuli Search enables users to search documentation using screenshots of GUI elements instead of keywords. Sikuli Script enables users to programmatically control GUIs without support from the underlying applications. Sikuli Test lets GUI developers and testers create test scripts without coding. Deep Shot introduces a framework and interaction techniques to migrate work states across heterogeneous devices in one action, taking a picture. We also discuss challenges inherent in screenshot-based interactions and propose potential solutions and directions of future research.

Robson, Catherine. "Seizure clinic encounters : third party references and accompanying others." Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6733/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are two different types of seizures, epileptic and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) - the seizures can look the same and have the same features. Despite the impressive increase in our biomedical knowledge it is difficult for neurologists to differentiate between these seizure conditions; and many of the tests used cannot, on their own, confirm a diagnosis. However, it is crucial to get the diagnosis right because the choice of treatment critically depends on the cause and nature of the seizures. Consequently, history-taking and the interaction between patient and doctor remains key to the investigation and correct and effective treatment of epilepsy and PNES. Recent research indicates that the close examination of doctor-patient encounters not only enables us to identify linguistic and interactional features that help with the diagnosis of epilepsy and PNES, but also yields helpful psychological insights into how people with seizures experience their disorder. Previous work has alerted researchers (and neurologists) to the important role that references to others not present during consultations (third parties) can play. However, previous studies have not examined or described the use of these third party references in detail. This thesis investigates the use of third party references and seizure witness accounts by participants experiencing refractory seizure disorders using secondary data collected during 20 one-to-one doctor-patient consultations. Moreover, patients are routinely invited to bring seizure witnesses and companions along to their first as well as to subsequent visits to seizure clinics. Despite the important diagnostic roles companions are thought to play in these encounters, no previous studies have focussed specifically on their contribution to the interaction between patients and health professionals. To help advance what is known about accompanied interactions in the seizure clinic, 50 patients attending a specialist outpatient seizure clinic consented to participate in an observational study. Findings from this research, funded by the charity Epilepsy Action, help inform existing models of interactional criteria that distinguish between the linguistic and communicative features of PNES and epilepsy patient seizure descriptions. The findings suggest that doctors utilising the differential interactive, linguistic and topical features of seizure patient talk need to carefully consider how they conduct and structure these consultations, and recommendations are offered in this respect. Finally, avenues of future research are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the multiplicity of computer-aided engineering applications present in industry today, interoperability between programs has become increasingly important. A survey conducted among top engineering companies found that 82% of respondents reported using 3 or more CAD formats during the design process. A 1999 study by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) estimated that inadequate interoperability between the OEM and its suppliers cost the US automotive industry over $1 billion per year, with the majority spent fixing data after translations. The Neutral Parametric Canonical Form (NPCF) prototype standard developed by the NSF Center for e-Design, BYU Site offers a solution to the translation problem by storing feature data in a CAD-neutral format to offer higher-fidelity parametric transfer between CAD systems. This research has focused on expanding the definitions of the NPCF to enforce data integrity and to support associativity between features to preserved design intent through the neutralization process. The NPCF data structure schema was defined to support associativity while maintaining data integrity. Neutral definitions of new features was added including multiple types of coordinate systems, planes and axes. Previously defined neutral features were expanded to support new functionality and the software architecture was redefined to support new CAD systems. Complex models have successfully been created and exchanged by multiple people in real-time to validated the approach of preserving associativity and support for a new CAD system, PTC Creo, was added.

Abstract:
Fantasy creatures are an essential part of many games, but while there are several studies focusing on body language and how expressive gaming companions may enhance the player’s experience, creatures and animals are rarely the focal points. Personality is closely related to believability, which is what most game developers work towards hence believability may improve the gaming experience. The purpose of this paper was to explore how the personality of a fantasy creature would be perceived by the observer when using different animal motion references. A 3D-model was created and animated in three different styles using motion references from a cat and lizard. A survey with Likert-scales was then formed with the intention to evaluate the animations. The participants in the survey were assigned one of the three animations to rate statements regarding personality and believability. Rather than a certain type of animal being associated with a certain type of personality, the result suggests that it was mainly certain motion cues and postures that affected the participants’ ratings. The study was deemed to be insufficient for a reliable result. In the discussion part, there are ideas on how the study could be improved with the aim of continuing the research to gain a clearer insight into the subject of personality and creatures.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to research the rendering of cultural references in the fansubbing of Spanish into Chinese based on a corpus of translations of the Spanish TV series The Ministry of Time by the groups Shenying and YYeTs. In the quantitative analysis, we not only study the density of cultural references in the corpus, but we also analyze the translation techniques used. Then, we focus on the relations between the classification of cultural references and the classification of translation techniques. In the qualitative analysis, we pay attention to the use of amplification with notes on the screen before summarizing its forms, situations of use, functions and problems that were observed in the corpus. This dissertation has great value for Translation Studies as it delves into the study of the translation techniques in a non-professional translational form. Furthermore, it emphasizes on the rendering of cultural references from Spanish to Chinese, an important issue for audiovisual translators’ training of this language combination.

Abstract:
Integrated voltage references have always been a fundamental block of any electronic system, and an important research topic that has been extensively studied in the past 50 years. A voltage reference is a circuit that provides a stable voltage with low sensitivity to variations in temperature, supply, load, process characteristics and packaging stresses. They are usually implemented through the weighted sum of two independent physical phenomena with opposite temperature dependencies. Usually the thermal voltage, related to the Boltzmann’s constant and the electron charge, provides a positive temperature dependence, while the silicon bandgap voltage or a MOSFET’s threshold voltage provide the complementary term. An auxiliary biasing block is sometimes necessary to provide the necessary currents for the circuit to work, and additional blocks implement the weighted sum. The scaling of process technologies is the main driving factor for low voltage operation, while the emergence of portable battery-operated, implantable biomedical and energy harvesting devices mandate that every circuit consume as little power as possible. Therefore, sub-1 V supplies and nanoWatt power have become key characteristics for these kind of circuits, but there are several challenges when designing high accuracy voltage references in modern CMOS technologies under these conditions. The traditional topologies are not suitable because they provide a reference voltage above 1 V, and to achieve such power consumption levels would require G resistances, that occupy a huge silicon area. Recent advances have achieved these levels of power consumption but with limited accuracy, expensive calibration procedures and large silicon area.

Toor, Saba K. "A pedagogical framework for enhancing skills of references and citations." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/71180/.

Abstract:
References and citations form a basis for scientific research and creation/discovery of knowledge. However literature reviews had indicated that many errors are present in scholarly papers published in journals and conferences as well as in books and articles. Furthermore, course works of students studying in higher education institutions contain mistakes in references lists and in-text citations. Problems that stem from these inaccuracies are multifarious and range from the act of plagiarism, not acknowledging the source, problems in information access and retrieval as well as causing inaccuracies in ranking articles and journals, thus hindering the growth of knowledge. Based on the importance of this global issue this research was initiated. The first objective of our research was to determine root causes for the presence of mistakes and inadequacies in references and citations within the academic arena. We chose the academic arena because they are the training grounds for education and scientific research. Furthermore, through this research we sought a unique practical solution for this issue. In order to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the above mentioned problems, and to achieve the aim of proposing a suitable solution, we divided our research work into three main phases. First phase was the investigative phase. During this phase a thorough literature review was conducted. As a result of this review, research questions were formed. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to investigate the causes of erroneous references and citations. Triangulation research methodology was used to get reliable and comprehensive information. Data received through these methods were analyzed and core issues such as inadequate feedback and training in referencing task were highlighted. In the second phase, termed as solution phase, a pedagogical framework was proposed to resolve issues that were reported during the investigative phase. A conceptual framework was built on the principles of Learning theories and spaced repetition theory. To evaluate this framework experiments were conducted. This was done in the third and final phase of the research which was termed as evaluation phase. Two types of experiments were conducted, first type was in a traditional classroom environment and the second type of experiment was with students who chose to work independently (without tutors). Data were collected and analyzed from these experiments using both quantitative methods and qualitative methods and were analyzed. This research provides insight into causes of errors within referencing tasks of students in higher education. It Indicates that reform in the pedagogy for teaching this skill is needed. Furthermore a unique pedagogy is presented. Results from experiments have indicated that through the proposed operational model improvements of referencing skills have been seen.

Strickfaden, Megan. "(In)tangib/es : sociocultural references in the design process milieu." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2006. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/6201.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis broadly engages with the design process and design education, but focuses particularly on sociocultural and (in)tangible references that are communicated verbally, visually and textually within the design environment. With the aim of defining references and subsequently understanding the contextualized sociocultural environments ethnographically oriented methods and an interdisciplinary theoretical model are developed and applied to two field studies. This research combines design with cultural anthropology, social psychology and social cognition towards gaining a more holistic viewpoint on design processes. Each empirical field study uses the same research approach, methodology, theoretical framework, and subsequent data analyses and display. The methods include observational techniques, questionnaires to query personal information, and informal interviews to track the design process. Videotape recordings are used to track the in-studio activity and still photography is used to capture the visual communications along with the sociocultural context of the participants. The studies are longitudinal, being six and seven weeks in duration, and follow university level industrial design students and their instructors from the onset of their design brief to the completion of their project. The first study takes place in Scotland in the United Kingdom (UK) where the students are working towards the design of an airline meal tray. The second study takes place in Western Canada and involves the design of sports eyewear. This research defines and describes sociocultural factors as these are identified through references. Sociocultural references include the individual-personal and social-cultural inforrnation that is embedded in an individuals' personal make-up, called here sociocultural capital. How, when and why sociocultural capital is used during the creation of an artefact is of primary interest in this work. Design decisions are made regarding artefact form, overall aesthetics, materials, manufacture, user experience and more. These decisions are made through considering the stakeholders in the project (e.g., instructors, clients, users) and references to these are called tangible because they are easily relatable to the design brief and the well-known documented stages of deSigning. The references that are abstract and have distance from the task at hand are called the intangibles. Sociocultural references are both tangible and intangible but relate specifically to the sociocultural capital of the individuals making them. Patterns, themes and categories about the design process, designing, the individual design students and two educational scenarios including the studio culture and design culture are revealed through the references. This research herein discusses and raises three central ideas as follows: • A theoretical model called the deSign process milieu for understanding the holistic designing scenario including inside-local, inside-universal, outside-local and inside-universal environments. This includes a detailed breakdown of how to use the model including a systematic approach, methods and analyses system. • A definition and description of the nature of (in)tangible references including when and why they are used during the design process. • Detailed descriptions of two design environments including the studio culture and design culture. It is argued in this research that references provide important details about the sociocultural context of the design scenario. Furthermore it is also argued that all things discussed in the design process are meaningful and have the potential to steer the development of an artefact. Therefore, there are substantial implications for this research relating to how design students, educators and designers are affected by the sociocultural contexts enveloping them; what types of sociocultural capital designers use; and to a lesser degree, how, when and why they use their sociocultural capital. The insights from this work result in recommendations for design education, practice and design research in general.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the development and investigation of optical absolute frequency references based on rovibronic transitions in molecular iodine. Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy methods are employed to resolve individual transitions of the hyperfine structure with linewidths below 1 MHz in the B-X system of molecular iodine at 532 nm with the second harmonic of Nd:YAG lasers. Electronic feedback control systems are employed for laser frequency stabilization to the line center of the optical transitions with a line splitting of 10^5. With the goal of a space qualified optical absolute frequency reference for future laser-interferometric space missions, two spectroscopy setups were designed and realized in quasi-monolithic, glass-ceramic setups as so called elegant bread board model and engineering model. These iodine references were characterized in detail with respect to their frequency stability and reproducibility and the engineering model was subject to environmental tests, including vibrations and thermal cycling to verify its applicability in future space missions. For the investigation of the frequency instability of these iodine references, a frequency stabilized laser system was realized based on a temperature controlled high Finesse ULE cavity for direct frequency comparisons at 1064 nm. Analysis of the frequency stability of the iodine references revealed exceptionally low fractional frequency instability of 6x10^−15 at 1 s, averaging down to less than 2×10^−15 at 100 s integration time, constituting the best reported stability achieved with iodine references to date. With the demonstrated performance, these absolute frequency references enable precision laser systems required for future space missions that are dedicated to, e.g., the detection of gravitational waves, mapping of the Earth’s gravitational field or precision test of fundamental physics.

Abstract:
One of the notable features of JM Coetzee's work is the portrayal in his novels, particularly in his 1999 Booker Prize-winning novel, Disgrace, of worlds that often seem bleak and bereft of redemption. In this dissertation I will argue that there is a resonance in Coetzee's writing that goes beyond the political and historical and that adds another dimension to his work. The focus of my dissertation will be an attempt to account for this other 'dimension' within the broader socio-political-historical nexus that informs much of his work. I will argue that this other dimension represents an ongoing conccrn with the questions of redemption and salvation, particularly as they are manifested in his latcr works, Disgrace and Elizabeth Costello. These concerns, however, are not just a consequence of Coetzee's evolving thought. As I will show, they are present in his earlier texts as well. To this end, I will consider the ways in which the themes of redemption and salvation, in the specifically religious and Christian sense of these words, also resonate in In the Heart of the Country (1977) and Life and Times of Michael K (1983).

Abstract:
The genesis of this thesis was the observation that water played a role in many Murdoch novels as did accounts of the wanton destruction of valuable possessions. Study of the works of AS Byatt revealed a similar interest in the human impulse to destroy and in the Byatt tetralogy published over a period of more than two decades fire is often the means of destruction. My academic training to date has taught me to attempt to account for such observations. I concluded that Murdoch's obsession with the imagery and activity of water and Byatt's with that of fire reflect their awareness that, despite the wide acceptance of the death of the idea of God, humans as individuals and in community still need a religious life - ritual, ceremony, nurture, blessing and a moral order to control the human impulse to destruction.
