Full textThe purpose of this Ph-D work aims to enhance knowledge and better describe wave propagationthrough porous media in order to propose a new characterization of coastal defense structures. The influenceof the specific surface parameter (fluid-solid contact surface) of porous media is then highlighted at givenporosity for steady and oscillatory wave induced flows with experiment series carried out in either wave tankor basin. Experimental data are compared with theoretical models based on wave potential theory numericalsolved by use of integral matching method at the domains’ boundaries.Wave scattering in the presence of porous structure is studied in both 2D and 3D cases. Interference processwithin the porous media are observed in the 2D case, leading to an oscillatory behavior of the reflection versusfrequency. Additional interference processes are observed in the transverse direction in the 3D case, leadingto a wave behavior strongly dependent on wave dynamics at both sides of the porous structure for resonantcases. Either linear or quadratic behavior of the dissipation is observed within the porous media. The role ofthe specific surface in the dissipation process is demonstrated. Both flow regimes and scale effects are alsodiscussed

Full textThis PhD thesis focuses on a specific part of the interactions between waves, current and bathymetry: the influence of the vorticity on the Bragg resonance phenomenon. Two numerical models, based on hyperbolic equations, are compared: the Mild Slope equation and the Modified Mild Slope equation, both extended to consider vorticity. To establish some trends about the wave behaviour in such configuration, the influence of the vorticity has been compared to the influence of the surface current velocity, in a parametric study. To go further, an experimental campaign has been settled in a wave flume, and the reflexion of regular waves propagating above sinusoïdal bathymetry and horizontally varying sheared currend has been registered for a large range ofwaves frequencies. Sorne strong conclusions asserted themselves: under the influence of a varying sheared current, the maximum of reflexion is reduced, both in amplitude and frequency, but another local maximum appears in higher waves frequencies (between 1.25 and l .45Hz). Moreover, our modelling achieved to represent the amplitude of the Bragg Peak quite well, but always overestimated the associated frequency. Thanks to a strong questioning of the theory and a collaboration between several researchers, a new modelling arised, with an original decomposition of the velocity potential taking into account the asymmetry between the incident and reflected wavenumbers. The first results are very optimistic: find the Bragg Peak frequency is not a problem anymore, and the study on the vorticity influence can continue. This new approach in coastal engineering will generate as many questions as opportunities

Full textThis PhD study aims to analyze the free surface within a wave channel by using a new optical measurement. This process uses a video and a laser induced fluorescence to visualize the water movement within a wave channel equipped with glass walls. The good contrast between the water and the air obtained on the captured images allows to detect accurately the free surface. A pixel range can give one punctual evolution of the free surface like a traditional punctual measurement of the free surface (for example: resistive probe). So the space resolution of the free surface can be obtained with a very high resolution. This optical measurement opens an in-depth investigation on the decomposition of incident and reflected harmonic waves using four wave gauges proposed by Lin et al. (2004). On the one side, it confirms the good pertinence of this method with the fundamental waves. On the other side, some difficulties appear about the estimation of higher harmonic waves. The same conclusions are found by comparing the four fixed gauges method of Lin et al. (2004) with the moving probes method of Brossard et al. (2000). This new measurement method allows to characterize the different behaviours of the free surface nearby a sloping marine structure according to the structure inclinations. For this purpose, various parameters associated with the extreme forms of the free surface are analyzed in relation to the structure inclination

Full textFor the design of marine or coastal structures subject to nonlinear waves in deep to shallow water, it is crucial to take into account both wave/structure and wave/wave interactions on large fluid domains. In this purpose, a high-order Boussinesq-type model has been developed and used to investigate nonlinear wave interactions with piecewise rectangular bottom-mounted (surface piercing) structures. Several practical applications of the model involving highly nonlinear wave run-up on a rigid plate are presented. Both normal and oblique wave conditions are considered. A new physical phenomenon creating large wave amplification in front of reflective structures is also fully studied

Full textThe two-dimensional (horizontal plane) models of free surface wave propagation are deduced from the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics. They are based on the non Iinear non-dispersive wave approach described by Saint-Venant equations (hydrostatic pressure), and on the non-linear dispersive wave approach described by Serre and Boussinesq type equations (non-hydrostatic pressure). The Boussinesq and Serre equations are developed using perturbation method with definition of the domain of validity of various approximations. A considerable number of Serre and Boussinesq type models is due to the choice of the kind of horizontal velocity, for which we give unambiguous interpretation. Higher-order terms introduced by Madsen to improve frequency dispersion serve as a base of "product" of different Boussinesq-type modeis. A one-dimensional and a two-dimensional (in plane) finite elements model of Serre and Boussinesq-type equations with improved frequency dispersion are presented. The time discretisation is based on Lax-Wendrofftype non-diffusive scheme. The one-dimensional numerical models are validated comparing with theoretical solutions and results obtained experimentally for horizontal and uneven bottom with various boundary conditions. The two-dimensional (in plane) Serre-Boussinesq finite elements models, capable to predict the refraction, diffraction and reflection are validated with good agreements between numerical and experimental results. The irregular meshs for complex bathymetry are created using I-DEAS code. A new one-dimensional breaking wave propagation model based on the Boussinesq type equations is developed by introduction of turbulent dissipation. Satisfactory agreements between numerical results and experiences are obtained

Full textIn this work we focused on the electromagnetic wave scattering by a controlled swell. The microwave signal backscattered by a controlled swell in a wave basin is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The electromagnetic response of such a surface depends on its shape, its dielectric characteristics, and antennas characteristics and positions. Measurements acquired with a monostatic microwave scatterometer installed above a wave basin, in which regular and irregular waves are generated, are compared with simulation results obtained from two electromagnetic models, based on the Physical Optics approximation (PO) and the Method of Moments (MoM). The swells studied by the electromagnetic simulator are given by the paddle movement simulation. From both methods, a good agreement is observed between the results. Also, a good agreement is observed between theoretical and experimental results around the inclination angle 0°. Nevertheless, a difference is observed between results for highest angles. This is due to the propagation of short ripples on top of the desired long waves. Those ripples are generated both by the gaps existing between the wavemaker paddles and by the beach located at the end of the wave tank, where waves break in order to avoid reflection. These short ripples are modeled and added to an example of a regular surface. For regular surfaces with additional ripples, better agreement is then observed between the results

Full textThe first part deals with the study of what, in the first theories about evolution (lamarck and darwin), made the establishing of a science about behaviour possible. The places granted to behaviour by lamarck and darwin in the evolutive process are compared. Ethology is then presented from the definitions given by its founders. In the second part, different aspects of ethology are debated : its reconsideration of the instinct concept, its conception of the rift betwen animality and humanity, its way to position the possibility for an human ethology. The theory of aggression is more particulary gone into there and holds a central position. The last part deals with a critical analysis of the "objectivist" trend, from the work's of its main representatives. It deals with the reasons why this trend was rejected, with the misunderstandings and the malicious interpretations about it. Some impostures concerning the objectivists' requirements are pointed out : the difficulties in substituting the notion of fonction to the one of finality, in assuming an ejection ofpsychology, in remaining true the dounders' directions, in basing arguments on the observation of aminals intact in their natural surroundings

Full textThe goal of my Ph.D. is to finds high level models in which self-modification can be expressed. What is readable and changeable is a data, and a program is executable. We propose an abstract machine where this duality is structurally emphasized. On one hand the program zone beholds registers which can be executed, and on the other hand data zone contains readable and changeable registers. Self-modification is enabled by passing a data register into program zone, or a program register into data zone. In this case, we give an abstraction of executions which only extracts information about self-modifications: execution is cut into paths without self-modification. For the logical part, we tried to find a Curry-Howard correspondence between a language with self-modifications and logical world. For that we built an extension of lambda-calculus with frozen terms, noted , that is, terms which cannot reduce. This terms are considered as data. Other terms are programs. We first prove that this language as expected properties like confluence. On the other hand, we found a type system where a subset of terms of this language can be expressed. Our type system is inspired by Linear Logic, without resources management. We prove that this system has good properties like subject reduction. We finally have extended the system with continuation and double negation. This extension can be expressed in a krivine style, using a machine inspired by krivine machine

Full textAbstract Wave measurement in coastal zone. Instrumentation design in wave tank and sea. The littoral zone constitutes one of the lost variable mediums and complexes of planet. Place of life and work for more than 60 % of the world population, it suffers from a high anthropic and increasing pressure. The preservation of this fragile medium of important socio-economic interest needs a knowledge of the processes controlling its evolution. The determination of wave - and current is necessary to evaluate theirs effects on harbors constructions, evolution of coast shape, the forecast of pollutants derives and sediments transport, navigation, work planning of civil engineering at sea. The goal of this work consists in developing a system of measurement for coastal and littoral zone. A buoy and pressure sensor array have been studied and experiments were taken in wave tank and near shore zone. The first part presents different wave theories we need in our coastal application. (small slope and 2D waves assumption). A presentation of means of measurement used, existing instrumentation and their limitations. The second treats system design during this work. We start with the presentation of the principal hydrodynamic effects on a small body and its anchoring in presence of wave and current. The configuration chosen, the analyses in monochromatic, bi-chromatic and irregular wave and the frequency response of the system function of the geometry is presented (Wave tank experiments). We conclude by measurements analysis during experimental work on the beach of Sete (2000) and Truc Vert (2001)

Full textThis PhD thesis presents a new method for deterministic sea wave prediction, able to accurately describe the evolution of non linear sea states while keeping the computation time reasonable. Particular attention is paid to the quality of the wave phase information. Contrary to classical approaches relying on free surface elevation measurements, information on the incident sea state is collected here in the form of instantaneous horizontal wave velocity profiles upstream of the area of interest. This kinematic information is used in a nonlinear propagation model based on a pseudo-spectral approach, allowing to avoid the data assimilation step usually required in this kind of model. This greatly reduces the computation time while maintaining the prediction quality. This work presents a feasibility study of this method for long-crested waves. In the lack of an instrumentation dedicated to the measurement of instantaneous horizontal velocity profiles, an original method is developed to reconstruct this information from acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements, thus extending the current application scope of these sensors. Numerical sensitivity studies then evaluate the quality of the prediction obtained for various measurement configurations and sea states. Lastly, we present the trials conducted in Centrale Nantes' towing tank, which provide an experimental validation of the method for unidirectional waves. The good numerical and experimental results obtained make this method a promising approach

Full textMovement in space takes the same line as that of writing to trace the scenographic experiences and the thinking processes that they engender. This is the very matter of scenography. Firstly, this thesis comes from an auto-reflexive approach and brings together theory and practice. It uses examples from real work in order to show and enlighten the creative process. The second part of the work is dedicated to space experimentation. From an iconographic documentation, the work analyses the essentiel and their processes. The work of authors such as roland barthes, claude levi-strauss or yves bonnefoy is used to illustrate the theory. These are not theatrical writers however they have been chosen on purpose to echo the scenographical process. Philosophy, arts, esthetic, also contribute to better grasp the links beetween time and space. The first steps of scenographic works evolve to rediscover within one self the relationship with space experiences as a small child. The conscious gestures stem from deep memory, where one can rediscover one's first feelings. Learning about scenography is a constant obstinate and daily work. It is an endless interrogation about the link between things-spaces, colours, fluxes and flows, motions, in order to transcribe all of these subtle aspects on stage. Scenography could be compared to a + pointillist ; painting which decomposes shape and light in a multitude of points to give the human body a real presence on stage. This is a neverending quest on space and time whitch uncovers a number of lightmotives, but is constantly careful not to focalise on them in order not to stop one short in one's tracks

Full textThe increase of large ships dimensions shifts their structural natural frequencies towards common wave frequencies, inducing more interactions between the classic seakeeping response and the structural response. Accurate modeling of wavestructure interactions becomes a key issue for architects and classification societies during the design of a ship. In this respect, a new numerical tool for fluidstructure interaction is developed, combining a finite difference RANSE description of the fluid domain with ICARE-SWENSE and an analytic beam model, within a modal approach. Thanks to the use of a simple formulation for the structure part, the tool inherits ICARE-SWENSE tolerance properties with regard to large time steps, while still taking into account hydrodynamic nonlinear effects. Results presented for a flexible barge in diffraction and radiation according to flexible modes validate the first steps of the coupling procedure. Special consideration is given to hydrodynamic non linearities threshold and their impact on the structural response. A first implementation is shown for the resolution of the equation of motion for the elastic degrees of freedom. Parametric studies on ship resistance in both regular and bichromatic waves are included as a stepping stone towards future simulations of ship hydroelasticity in irregular waves

Full textWave prediction is a crucial task for offshore operations from an obvious security point of view regarding working people and technical equipments or structures. The prediction tools available since now are based on a stochastic description of the sea state and are not able to predict deterministically the wave fields evolution. Only averaged statistical data representative of the sea state can be obtained from the known spectral quantities. To face the growing need of accurate short term predictions, a deterministic prediction model has been developed in order to improve the efficiency of the sea operations which require a precise knowledge of the sea surface on a specific region of interest. After achieving a theoretical study to determine the available time-space predictable domain depending on the current sea state and on the measurement conditions, we created two data assimilation process to combine the measured observations to the physics-based model. This model is a second order model for low to moderate steeped fields, or a highorder model for high crested seas, namely the High-Order Spectral numerical method. The extended second order model and the third order model using the HOS have been validated for the prediction of 2D synthetic and basin wave fields: the averaged prediction errors we obtain are more than two times less than the errors returned by a linear approach. The improvement is also more important that the steepness and the order of the prediction model are high

Full textSeismic data recorded on oceanic islands can be used to analyze the swell through its signature in the microseismic noise. We first analysed the "secondary" noise sources, which are generated by the interaction of ocean waves with similar period within a storm, a cyclone or by the reflection phenomena off the coast. By analyzing secondary microseisms at the scale of the oceanic basin, we first performed a spatio-temporal tracking of the source, even localized thousands km off the recording seismic stations. Secondly, in the long-term, they can be used to follow the global climate change related to the ocean waves activity in a specific region. We also studied the "primary" seismic noise sources, which are created by the direct interaction of ocean waves with the coast. By analyzing these primary microseisms, we succeeded to characterize ocean waves locally in terms of amplitude, period, and, sometimes, direction of propagation. This showed that it is possible to use a seismic station as an ocean waves gauge to get precious swell data, particularly in remote and poorly instrumented areas. In the context of the Iles Éparses and of La Réunion Island, we studied a few extreme swells, which occur there frequently and can have strong social and environmental consequences. Finally, by using a temporary network of seismic stations installed in La Reunion, we studied the spatial variations of the seismic noise level across the island to characterize the swell impact on the different coasts. This study enables us to identify the most exposed spots to the swell, which may be attractive for generating renewable energy with this powerful resource yet underexploited

Full textIn this Thesis we give applications of two important ideas in Set Theory. One of these ideas is the reflection of stationary sets. The second idea is that strengthening the logic in Gödel's compactness theorem gives rise to a variety of interesting large-cardinal axioms and other compactness principles with influence to so basic questions of modem Set Theory such as, for example, the problem about the cardinality of the continuum and other questions about the cardinal arithmetic. We show that the Weak Reflecting Principle (WRP) together with the saturation of the ideal NS imply that for every regular cardinal thêta grater than aleph 1, thetaA(omega_l)=theta. As indicated above, another theme of this Thesis is the compactness of infmitary logics. We prove that Rado's conjecture together with the saturation of the ideal NS imply Diamond_{[omega_n]A{omega_l}} for every natural number n grater than 1. In fact, the diamond sequences that we get concentrate on sets that have uniformly uncountable cofinality omega_l. We expect that further work will lead us to similar consequences to ail other regular cardinal numbers greater than or equal to omega_2

Full textFunctional decomposition in the Navier-Stokes equations is a mathematical tool with takes advantage of the fact that the swell propagation and the evolution of the diffracted field from a body are two phenomena with different spatial scales. The principal unknowns of the problem are divided into an incident part representing the swell propagation and a diffracted part representing the perturbation due to the presence of the floating or submerged body. This decomposition is then introduced in the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Potential flow theory (more precisely spectral methods) is used to compute the incident waves while viscous effects are taken into account by using a modified RANSE solver to obtain the diffracted field in the full domain. By using this approach it is possible to simulate various nonlinear incident waves in an efficient and accurate manner: regular wave trains, focused waves, irregular 2D or 3D sea states. The present work is a contribution to the developent of the SWENSE (Spectal Ware Explicit Navier-Stokes Equations) method and offers several validation cases in regular sea as well as in irregular sea. The limitations of the method in its current form are discussed, especially the over-breaking problem, and answers to them are provided

This study investigates the physical modeling well controlled of morphological changes of cross-shore sand beach profiles carried out in the LOMC flume of 10m long. The beach consists of non-cohesive fine, to respect the laws of scale and to obtain experimental beaches subject to wave action or wave-tide combination, in similarity to the beaches observed in nature. For a given wave climate, The concept of equilibrium beach profile is verified on a wide range (1,8 < omega < 5,0) of the Masselink and Short (1993)’s classification. The beach bathymetrics profiles in the three directions and the interaction free surface / beach profile near the surf zone are followed with good resolution using two optical methods. The positions of the accretion and erosion zones, and the corresponding sand volumes are deduced from these profiles. Sedimentary bar formation is clearly demonstrated for steady wave climates. The effect of tide on beach profiles was then considered; a smoothing of the profiles was observed. A particular attention to the initial profile has been drawn, can induce in the case of an initial profile without bar, a stronger erosion of the upper part of the beach and a bar position shifted in the offshore direction. The migration of the bar was clearly established at the variation of the wave steepness. The emergence of multiple-barred profiles and the importance of the wave climate history for beach profiles are exhibited. The study of distribution size particle along the beach has been studied. A segregation of grains in surface and volume has been clearly demonstrated. The segregation mechanisms depend on the pore fluid flowing in a granular layer where grains of different sizes move differently

Full textThis thesis deals with the use of digital in-line holography to the study of a vortex dynamics under water waves. As waves propagate above an immersed structure, vortices are formed at its edges. Those vortices have a strong impact on the flow dynamics in the vicinity of structures and can cause scouring or damages. Thus we are interested in the three-dimensional dynamics of those vortices which are quickly distorted, leading to their breakup. To study this dynamics, the physical problem is modelled by a basic geometry, a thin plate is set under monochromatic waves. Experiments are conduct within a wave flume of dimensions 10 m long and 30 cm width. To measure the 3D flow the use of an innovative technique, the digital holography which allow a 3D3C measure with only one camera and a laser diode. Its main limitations are the size of the cross-section of the sample volume and the number of particles allowed in it. However, digital holography can localize particles with a pixel sized resolution within the plans parallel to the CCD sensor and a depth resolution in the order of 3 to 5 times the particles diameter. Those measurements enable to follow the path of each particle inside the sample volume. Finally, acquisition by stereo particle image velocimetry confirms the velocities measured by holography and are used to study the interaction between the vortex and the combined action of free surface and the plate
