Abstract: The plague, abuses in the church, and mysticism constitute the background for considering forerunners of the Reformation. They should not be viewed as directly causing the Reformation, but as anticipating in various ways reformational concerns. While some advocated practical reforms (e.g., Jan Hus and Savonarola), others developed theological reflection (e.g., the Brethren of the Common Life). Conciliarism, another reform movement through councils, ironically by its failure, propelled the cause of the Reformation. Finally, humanism, by its return to the sources and Scripture, paved t

Analogy is an area of linguistic change of the highest theoretical interest. No analogical changes can take place without the involvement of ‘performance’ factors in general, including a perceiving human agent as one of these (cf. Vincent, 1974; Anttila, 1977), for many analogical acts illustrate the human mind in a condition that is at the same time relatively free and relatively fettered. It is

This article investigates the Marian dimension to the Reformation’s first executions, the burning of the Augustinian friars Heinrich Voes and Johann van den Esschen in Brussels on July 1, 1523. Using sources generated by their case, it argues that the Reformation debate over how Christians should understand the Virgin Mary became interwoven with their case, and more specifically that their deaths were utilized by the ecclesiastical authorities (both Catholic and pro-Reformation) as a platform to debate Mary’s powers and efficacy. It further reveals the surreptitious nature of ways in which Cat

Based on research into the history of Sorbian pastoral work in Lübben, the main city of the Margraviate of Lower Lusatia, the present paper argues that the lack of pre-reformation sources about Sorbian church life and accordingly the increase of them after the reformation is primarily due

Chapter 18. The Second Satire of the First Book of Horace Imitated in the Manner of Mr Pope has been a source of embarrassment for some critics and readers. Under cover of a warning about the dangers of adultery, Horace’s poem has a great time exposing wild goings-on in Roman society, with lubricious examples and frank language. Pope’s poem follows Horace’s example, with witty pictures of sexually explicit behaviour, exposing how immoral so-called honourable members of society actually are. The implicit question is: does moral satire really have any reformative effects if this is the result? Still, it’s all good fun.

Natural gas hydrate reformation in gas wells or transportation equipment is a significant concern. It reduces the gas production rate. An exceptionally high reformation rate can drastically reduce productivity and completely plug the equipment. This may result in equipment damage and cause the operating company to abandon the well, resulting in considerable financial losses. In some instances, this may result in staff loss.
