Full textAs a frontier province situated in the north-west of the kingdom of france, the seneschalsy of boulogne was very close to the protestant england and to the flemish and artois territories belonging to the spanish. Around 1550, boulogne and its surroundings became the center of a new diocese which was created after the former diocese of therouanne had been destroyed by the spanish. In the second half of the sixteenth century, protestants and catholics were both anxious to get in control of boulogne harbour and of the region. In the seventeenth century, a small protestant community still existed (it will survive until the revocation of the edict of nantes in 1685) and the bishops of boulogne were aware a catholic reform was necessary. They wanted to improve the state of the clergy so that the priests were more easily able to control the religious practices of their congregations by laying stress on the religious instruction. This catholic reform was marked by the spirit of "l'ecole francaise de spiritualite", the main representatives of which were the cardinal berulle, the oratoriens and saint vincent de paul. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, a jansenist crisis broke out in the region of boulogne, showing that the catholic reformation had been a success in this region

Full textSo far, art historians have paid little attention to the iconography of the iconoclastic prophet, although it proliferated in 17th century France. This research explores its transformative power through a range of case studies aiming at bestowing attention to the material and medial specificities of the images as well as to their historical context. Through the format of their works, the scale of their figurative elements, their framing and disposition, the chosen narrative moment as well as by imagining their landscapes and parerga, Christian artists reinvented the history of Moses according to formal, theological and political concerns. As a favorite subject for academic prize competitions, it proved to be a formal and agonistic operator that allowed artists to define their identity in relation to their peers and to literary sources. This provoked a re-balancing of the ut pictura poesis doctrine in favor of the visual arts, whose singularity starts to be theoretically defined in the 17th centuryFrench Kunstliteratur on the base of images of Moses’ life. The iconography of the founder of Judaism was employed by Catholics and Protestants alike, who strongly competed right up to the Edict of Fontainebleau providing a framework for which many images were commissioned. The pictures intended for churches, convents, and temples thus present Moses as a biblical hero in the service of Christianity, of which he was a prestigious ancestor. Occasionally, mighty private patrons tried to assume the virtues of one whom Philo of Alexandria used to consider the archetype of the king-philosopher, of the legislator, the high priest and the prophet, to consolidate their personal authority

Full textNicolas Psaume, a native of Chaumont-sur-aire (Meuse-France), enters the order of premontre in 1538. Trained in Paris in the tradition of Gerson, he dedicates himself to the reforming of the abbey Saint-Paul of Verdun. Installed as bishop of Verdun in 1548 by cardinal jean de Lorraine, he takes possession of e diocese without resident bishop for forty years and which, because of its general state, requires a complete reform. As bishop and count, Psaume succeeds it win recognition from the mobility and in re-establishing episcopal authority. Having been sent to the second and third sessions of the council of trent by the emperor of Germany on whom he his dependent, Psaume plays an important role in the discussion of the decree regarding the divine institution of bishops and those decrees regarding reform. In the tradition of Barthelemy des martyrs, archbishop of Braga, he inserites himself ever he manages only with difficulty to change the stand of Charles of Lorraine whose client he is. Having returned to his diocese in Verdun, he dedicates him to the application of the tridentine reforms. He would like to maintain the unique autonomy of his town but the obligation to fight against Protestantism forces him to accept military aid from the king of France, thus achieving the policies of the house of Lorraine in uniting to france the "three bishoprics". Psaume is the witness of a popular theology due to his works, many of wich are still inedited. His line of thought: the calling of all men to paradise through the struggle of living a Christian life. He elaborates lengthily on the sacraments of Christian life and especially on the sacrament of the holy orders and its demands. In the likeness of Borromeo, Psaume reforms his diocese by the means laid down at trent : diocesan synods, pastoral visits, the formation of clerics, the foundation of a college trusted to the Jesuits, and of "small schools", and preaching. He appears as the typical tridentine prelate in that he applies the council in all aspects. He is one of the rare reforming French-speaking bishops of the XVIth century. The second volume contains 215 pages often unedited

Full textHistorians agree that Reformation brought deep modifications to the life of women in the XVIth century, but they are divided on the nature and the signification of these changes. Our research, which has focused on many texts of the XVIth century – treaties, notices, letters, biblical commentaries, sermons – and in particular on those written by the leaders of the evangelical movement in Strasbourg, leads us to think that the influence of Reformation was beneficial for the everyday life as well as for the spiritual vocation of women in Strasbourg: these women were able to take advantage of the ideas of Reformation and at the same time to use evangelical arguments to define leading roles for themselves

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the preaching of french reformed protestantism during the first world war. By the method of content analysis, all the themes met are identified, the classified and counted (both words and occurrences). A corpus of three hundred and twenty eight sermons is treated in that way. The numerical results allow to trace the homiletic structure of these speechers, but also to specify their exegetical and hermeneutical approach. The second and third parts of this work develop an historical analysis of the various and theological themes. Concerning the imperatives of the war situation and the search for peace, feelings, attitudes and opinions of the preachers are examined in respect of the traumatic events of the war, the "union sacree", the origins of war, the patriotic stances and the nature nof the enemy; and also regarding the aims of war and the conditions for a just and lasting peace. As for the christian life and faith amid such a turmoil, we study how are unfolded "holy war" arguments, a theology of sacrifice, christological and ethical ideas. Moreover, we attempt to grasp how were discussed the problems of protestant identity and unity as well as questions about divine providence, interpretation of history and eschatology. The conclusion evaluates far the protestant clergymen have able to face their responsabilities of ministers of the word of god in those distressful circumstances

Full textThe question examined by this thesis is that of the experience of conversion in the Protestant Evangelical context and its role in the construction of a unique worldview. The study of several Evangelical groups, fruit of the work of Anglo-American missionaries in France, permits us to observe the variety and religious vitality of this transatlantic movement. It also reveals the dynamics by which these groups maintain the plausibility of their beliefs and their collective and individual sense of belonging. The experience of conversion, and of witnessing, is mot important among theses dynamics. Around this central question we privilege three orientations: the understanding of the mindset and religious experience of the North American Evangelical Missionaries, the examination of what is that these missionaries hope to accomplish and the ways in which they and their communities have been received by the French, the exposition of the influence of recent transformations in religious experience of the French on their work. By studying these Evangelical groups we wish to test, in the French context, the hypothesis of Christian Smith which suggests that a religious movement that unites both clear cultural distinction and intense social engagement will be capable of thriving in a pluralistic, modern society. We conclude that the Anglo-Saxon Evangelical missionaries have indeed been able to start communities in France which draw from their reading of the Bible, from their experience of conversion, and from their religious pilgrimage, convictions, perspectives, values and distinctive commitments which distinguish them in a positive and energizing way from their fellow citizens

Full textAlthough French society continues to bear signs of its Christian foundations, the Christian « faith universe » has become unintelligible for a significant number of French citizens. Having made this observation, this thesis argues that there is an Evangelical Protestant world view and a Roman Catholic world view that comprise two systemic realities which maintain two particular perceptions of reality that are rooted in two specific understandings of the saving work of Jesus-Christ. Our hypothesis is that these two multidimensional world views exist within a sociocultural context that offers meaning and answers to life’s ultimate questions to the French people. This thesis analyses the manner in which Evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics present the message of Christ to the French since 1965, and the process of conversion that they expect from those individuals who decide to enter into their « faith universe ». The goal of this analysis is to throw light upon the systemic realities that are at the heart of their perceptions of reality. Both theological and practical in nature, this study examines the unbelief of our times, and the paths that lead men and women from unbelief to a living experience of God, with the aim of helping today’s Christians to more intelligibly live and communicate their faith
Thouin-Dieuaide, Christabelle. "La vanité et la rhétorique de la prédication au XVIIᵉ siècle." Thesis, Limoges, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LIMO0006/document.
Full textThis research is set within the framework of XVIIth-century preaching during the Edict of Nantes period (1598-1685). It regards the expression of vanity in oratorical works (Catholic and Protestant sermons) as well as pictorial works (Vanitas, altar paintings). These last years, the study of rhetoric opened new paths that are interesting to explore. The issue at thecore of this study is the way the concept of vanity led to a renewal of the rhetoric of preaching in that period. In other words, I will show that for preachers the concept of vanityis both a theological and a literary concern. Thus my approach is to study the characteristics of a form of speech which, while it is heir to ancient conceptions, is also remodeled in order to adapt tonew circumstances that demand necessary reflections about nature and the power of speech as expressed in sermons and in Vanitas. The concept of vanity isnot only evidence of painful anthropological assessments, but is also used as a moral and religious argumentin sermons, while paradoxically generating an aesthetic fascination. I will thus consider moreparticularly the preachers’ favorite themes (death, scorn for the world, penitence) and their speech strategies, as Catholics and as Protestants, in order to study the paradoxes of speeches about vanity
