Abstract:
This article concerns some characteristics of the so-called third stage of the annihilation of Polish Jewry during World War II, after sending most of them to the killing centers. That phase consisted of individual—not mass—murder that took place “among Poles” and before their eyes, frequently with their participation, when Jewish refugees attempted to hide from persecutors or blended into the anonymous crowds of the larger cities (on the so-called Aryan side) or hid in hardly accessible rural areas poorly controlled by the German police. Most hiding Jews were hunted down and murdered by speci

The problem of emigration to Ukraine of a significant number of Belarusian citizens due to the events of the Belarusian anti-Lukashenko revolution of dignity and freedom, which began in this country in August 2020 after the presidential election, is discussed in the article. It is noted that at the beginning of 2021 the number of those who fled to Ukraine, hiding from repression and persecution by the Belarusian authorities, was already more than 75 thousand people. In the future, the number of Belarusian refugees is projected to increase to 100-120 thousand people by 2021. It is unknown yet w

Until recently, most Holocaust historians have devoted little attention to the topic of Jesuit priests who gave Jews shelter and helped them, in defiance of the orders of Vichy Government or the Germans authorities. In order to understand how it was possible for about 250,000 Jews in France, not to be deported, and to find help among the population, it is important also to take into account the activities of Jesuits providing hiding places for several hundred children and also adults. Most of them were able to obey their conscience, and disobey orders, and to act illegally in order to rescue J

Many antipredator behaviors are mediated by the ability of prey to recognize chemical cues from predators. Adult amphibians mainly use vision to detect predators, but the ability to detect chemicals of predators and conspecifics could be advantageous, especially when assessing safety of potential refuges where the use of visual cues is limited. We analyzed in the laboratory whether refuge choice by adult natterjack toads ( Bufo calamita Laurenti, 1768) was influenced by the presence in the refuge of chemical cues from conspecifics or from two different snake predators ( Natrix maura (L., 1758)

AbstractICESCR article 12 generously grants “everyone” the right to the highest attainable standard of mental and physical health. Ironically, “everyone” is reduced to “most” when held up to scrutiny, but certainly includes migrants. Migrants are entitled to the full realization of the right to health regardless of their legal or immigration status. This realization is threatened as States restrict health care, via legal and financial means, in order to punish undocumented migrants and deter migration. One such State is Sweden where the recent “Law Concerning Health Care for Asylum Seekers and

Refuges offer prey animals protection from predation, but increased time spent hiding can reduce foraging opportunities. Within social groups, individuals vary in their refuge use and willingness to forage in the presence of a predator. Here, we examine the relative foraging benefits and mortality costs associated with individual refuge use and foraging behaviour within groups of goldfish ( Carassius auratus ) under predation risk from an avian predator (little egret— Egretta garzetta ). We assessed individual order of emergence from the refuge and participation over 15 group foraging outings,

Abstract:
In this chapter, John Russell Kelso talks about the events that transpired between October 1861 and February 1862, highlighted by the retreat of the Federals who then took revenge in Buffalo. Leaving Rolla in the morning, Kelso encountered a large body of cavalry led by Col. Thomas Roe Freeman. Soon a large portion of John C. Frémont's army began to make their way to Springfield. Kelso then left his comrades and went into hiding all alone only a few miles from Buffalo, and in a rebel locality. Kelso narrates how he was captured by Confederate rebels but was able to escape and gave Gen. Samuel R. Curtis a full account of what he had gone through.
