This study seeks to explore experiences of social exclusion among refugees from sub-Saharan Africa resettled in Quebec and to understand the effects of forms of social exclusion on their living conditions and their health. The research is based on a qualitative quote that gives the floor to experts to live, ten refugees from different countries of sub-Saharan Africa. These people were met in semi-structured individual interviews. The results of the study shed light on different processes of social exclusion in different environments such as work, school, businesses, public transportation and various public places. The forms of social exclusion identified by participants are related to racial discrimination in hiring, identity contempt, difficulty in creating social links with the host community, lack of respect for fundamental rights and restrictive program rules. The social exclusion experienced by sub-Saharan refugees resettled in Quebec makes them experience living conditions that are very deleterious to their health: food insecurity, low income, unhealthy housing, resettlement in neighborhoods that are unfavorable to health and unsafe. In addition, this research identifies some effects of social exclusion and living conditions on health such as chronic diseases and mental health problems. KEYWORDS: resettled refugees, social exclusion, determinants of health, living conditions, health, Quebec

Full textIn the first chapter, the thesis presents a literature review on the process of social insertion of refugees. First of all, this theorical section does a critical analysis of the concepts used in the thesis like the notion of community and ethnic group, adaptation, integration and insertion. Secondly, the author presents the mere conclusions of different authors on the difficulties of social insertion of refuges in the north-american context. The two following parts are formed by a practical presentation : the second chapter presents a structural analysis of 22 life stories of salvadorian refugees in canada for 5 years at least. The same type of analysis prevails in the third chapter where the subjects studied are 22 iranian refugees. In both chapters important aspects in relation with the knowing of refugees are developped in the analysis of the datas. First of all, a brief picture of el salvador and iran. Secondly, an analysis of various dimensions of both groups, the socio-demographic characteristics, the family patterns, the pre-migratory context and the migratory process, the canadian settlement policy, the perception of the citizens attitudes in the host country, the process of social insertion, the life plans, the social relations and the loneliness feeling. The fourth chapter develops the perceptions of the refuges on social services concerned by settlement and protection of refugees. Those services are deeply involved in dealing with the difficulties of insertion of the refugees

Population displacements reveal the economic and political situations of our societies. Indeed, migration has always existed whether due to nomadism, rural exodus, economic migration or protection. However, migration questions social work professionals who work with immigrants of all statuses. Political and media discourse on migration also has its share of security issues. We are seeing an increase in border control measures and several amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act have a direct impact on the lives of migrants, particularly those seeking asylum. In this master’s thesis, we will explore the paths of asylum seekers in Quebec. The experience of being a refugee and seeking protection raises security and humanitarian issues, regardless of the country of departure or host country. Populations seeking protection, particularly asylum seekers, would thus be subject to structural difficulties. It is in this context that we question the conditions under which asylum seekers are received in Quebec. More specifically, the subject of this thesis concerns the empowerment of asylum seekers, i.e whether the support offered allows them to exercise their power of action under favourable conditions.
