Abstract:

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to one of the brief but vivid episodes of the history of the reception of German music in pre-revolutionary Russia to the turbulent fascination of the capitals public and musicians with the compositions of Max Reger, which became a characteristic feature of the St. Petersburg concert life of the first decade of the 20th century. Indicators of this success, such as the number of premiers and press reviews traditionally oriented to the receptions story, are supplemented by information about private perfomances and other circumstantial evidence of the distribution of his music, including the number of sheet music in the main library collections of both capitals. The comparison of the latter shows that musical Moscow did not share the kult of Reger in Petersburg. In this we can see the reason that the agreement between A. Siloti and Reger on future tours in Moscow after the huge success of Petersburg was not realized. Despite the exeptional interest in the work of Reger russian composer youth, more than a dozen talented representatives of which became his students in Germany, the stylistic influence of his music in Russia was minimal. The real result of its influence can be considered a more free attitude to the harmonic language, which however led the pupils of the Russian composer school to independent results. On the example of the Russian reception of Regers music, we can thus talk about various and sometimes not direct and and not obvious in its result forms in which the creative influence manifest itself.

Abstract:

In 55th ISOCARP World Planning Congress, Beyond Metropolis, Jakarta-Bogor, Indonesia. ISOCARP, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.47472/sdgu8646.

Abstract:
When people talk about the Metropolitan Area (MA), they mean differently in different parts of the world with different contexts. Based on its spatial extent, internal structure, socio-economic function, and network characteristics, an MA can refer to various entities from a metropolis to a Megacity-region. In an effort to clarify the MA concept, we review the origin of the MA concept and its development in various parts of the world, especially the United States, Japan and China, so as to propose a spectrum of MAs, and their relationship with specific human and natural geographical contexts. Particularly, we find MAs in China typically have a unique three-circle structure, which is composed of a core circle, a commuting circle, and a functional metropolitan circle. By international comparable standards which include factors such as population density, facility density, and economic activity intensity, and adjusted with reasonable context-dependent considerations in China, the three circles are designated as follows: the spatial extent with the highest development intensity and assuming a central regional role is identified as the core circle; the districts and counties around the core circle with a commuting rate greater than 10% are identified as the commuting circle; and the districts and counties within an one-hour accessible zone are identified as the functional metropolitan circle. To test the model, we utilize eight sources of big data covering ecological background, population, economy, transportation, real estate, land use, infrastructure, and culture characteristics, and with a fusion analysis of the data we show how the factors combined give rise to the three-circle structure in typical Chinese MAs, and why the combination of the same factors in the US and Japanese contexts works otherwise to fill different niches in the spectrum of MAs mentioned above. For a further inquiry, within the framework of the same model and using the same dataset, we identify 32 cities from all 338 prefecture-level cities in China that would qualify as an MA or potential MA, which we call “the Metropolitan Areas with Chinese Characteristics”, and designate the spatial extent of the three circles within each of the MAs. Additional analyses are also conducted to locate the main development corridors, key growth poles, and currently underdeveloped regions in each of the MAs. We conclude the paper with discussions of potential challenges of MA development in China vis-a-vis current policies, such as cross-administration collaboration between jurisdictions within the same MA, and cross-scale collaboration between MAs, cities, and city groups. Placing the research in the global context, and considering the vast similarities between China and other developing countries in terms of population density, land resources, urbanization level, and socio-economic development status in general, we argue that China’s model of MAs may be also applicable to other developing countries. Therefore, this research may shed lights to planning researchers and practitioners around the world, especially in developing countries in understanding the development conditions of MAs in their own contexts, and also in methods for identifying and planning potential MAs to achieve their specific policy objectives.

Abstract:
We are examining techniques for manipulation of microfabricated elements using arrays of bacteria as microactuators. Flagellated Serratia marcescens bacteria are attached to microstructures using a blotting technique that creates a bacterial monolayer carpet. These bacterial carpets naturally self-coordinate to propel the microstructures. We refer to these constructs as microbiorobots (MBR). Generally, the motion pattern of the MBRs is largely rotational in nature, and the center of mass deviates no more than several hundred microns from its original position. However, the angular velocity and orientation of the MBRs may be controlled using ultraviolet light stimulus, and the translational position may be adjusted using electrokinetic stimulus. Here, we demonstrate precision positional adjustment of a microbiorobotic transporter that is used to engage and transport cube-shaped particles 10 μm on each side.

Abstract:
Traditional Japanese architecture consists of natural wood, hay, earthenware, and similar types of materials. Japanese architecture has a linear structure. The main purpose of Japanese architecture is to be unified. Many of the materials used here have a higher moisture protection function than those made of plywood or spinning. The structure has a breathing mechanism that naturally preserves good air and moisture. The fact that Japan is rich in vegetation has a great effect on the formation of natural materials. There is a bond in Japanese architecture that respects the harmony between human and nature. Human beings are a part of nature. This article refers to the oldest wooden building in the world. The first world cultural heritage in Japanese architecture, and the temple of Horyu-ji, which has been standing for over 1300 years. The aim is to investigate the aesthetic, ethical awareness and ethnology of traditional wood used on Japanese architecture. While the structure and varieties of wood refer to the findings on the buildings, it is an attempt to approach the "lifestyle and values" of the wood form and structure.

The reflection of the economic situation in 1913 and 1917 in the official press organ of the Ministry of Finance – «Bulletin of Finance, industry and trade» may be interesting to both historians and economists. The journal is a valuable source on a wide range of issues in Russian economic history. The article provides a comparative thematic analysis of the journal materials using quantitative methods. For this purpose, the author relies, among other things, on the quarterly “Systematic lists of articles” and the bibliographic database created at NSU in 2005. The best way to present changes in the priorities of the editorial policy of the journal is to refer to the quarterly dynamics of the topics of analytical articles and reports.

Abstract:
In this work we present an innovative learning environment format, based on student-centred activities, that may support undergraduate students to deep understanding mathematics in the first year of engineering university. In particular, we refer to the difficulties students meet in the transition from the high school mathematics to the one they meet at university, which requires a significant shift to conceptual understanding, especially in Calculus courses. The goal of this presentation is to investigate the case of multivariable functions, a topic at the foundation of many mathematical models and its application. We show the results of the first pilot study which involves 160 undergraduate students. More precisely, we report how a flipped-learning approach based on online activities and working group allows students to deep understand the main properties concerning multivariable functions.
