AbstractBayaaye is a Luganda word meaning ‘hooligans’ used since the 1970s to both disparage Ugandan urban youth and celebrate their streetwise resourcefulness. The original so-called bayaaye were youth, often fresh from the countryside, who worked as street hustlers in the 1970s underground economy. This article focuses on how one Ugandan intellectual, M. B. Nsimbi, in his Luganda-language novel about the Idi Amin era, Kulyennyingi (1984), diagnosed the rise of the bayaaye as a national moral pathology. I discuss how this novel relates to earlier Luganda literary works, which advocated an ide

In Caribbean literature the discourse on identity is stressed by a state of diaspora: the memory of slavery must be transmitted together with the African cultural heritage. However, this necessity is marked by the impossibility of a fixed and enrooted cultural definition: as exemplified by the Caribbean, the post-colonial identity emerges in a multicultural, ever-changing space, creating new, vibrant transcultural forms. There is a constant dialogue in Caribbean writings between several voices: European languages become saturated with the African model, western aesthetical frameworks are opene

A Brief History of Seven Killings points readers to a jaded, subaltern temporality encoded in a dancehall music that rejects the revolutionary utopianism woven into postindependence Jamaican music. The article investigates how Boyle creates a metafictional historiography by combining two unrelated historical events – the bare-handed killing of a mugger by an elderly American veteran in Costa Rica and the long police hunt for the schizophrenic murderer Aaron Bassler

Abstract:
The rigorous Regge pole method has been used to investigate negative-ion formation in the large actinide atoms Cf, Fm and Md through the elastic total cross sections (TCSs) calculation in the electron impact energy range 0.0 ≤ E ≤ 10.0eV. Ground, metastable and excited negative-ion formation as well as shape resonances (SRs) and Ramsauer-Townsend (R-T) minima are found to characterize generally the TCSs which also exhibit fullerene molecular behavior near threshold through the TCSs of the highest excited states, while maintaining atomic character through the ground state TCSs. Abstract:
Abstract Regime type is an important variable in international relations. Numerous scholars have theorized its effects on actors’ crisis behavior and outcomes. Despite regime type's importance, the literature has not focused on the role its uncertainty might play in interstate politics. This is in stark contrast to the scholarly attention given to uncertainty about other similarly important variables like actor capabilities, intentions, or fighting costs. In this paper, we aim to address this gap in the literature by providing a theory of regime uncertainty's effects on conflict and developing

From late 2019 to the first half of 2020, the world has witnessed the epic spread and destruction of the novel coronavirus which was discovered in Wuhan, China. The huge number of infections and deaths caused by the virus, the collapse of the healthcare system and the economic consequences have few modern equivalents. While governments of all countries are responding to the pandemic, a heated debate rages about which political system, democracy versus authoritarian, is better positioned to respond to the pandemic. While the worldwide effort to contain the virus continues, we offer a preliminar
