Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the significant place of the 99th (Lanarkshire) Regiment of Foot as part of the shared history of Australia and New Zealand through the 1840s and 1850s, including its role in frontier conflict with Aboriginal peoples in Queensland and Māori peoples in New Zealand. This preliminary comparison explores the role and experiences of detachments of the British Army’s 99th Regiment on three different colonial frontiers during the 1840s transitional period: the end of convict transportation and the opening of free settlement in Moreton Bay in 1842–48; the short-lived North Australia colony (later Gladstone) in 1847; and New Zealand’s North Island in 1845–47.

Abstract:
The Amos Spafford farmstead (33Wo50) of Port Miami in northwest Ohio disappeared from the historical record after the War of 1812. Port Miami, a Franco-American village, was the first U.S. federal customs facility established in Ohio in 1805. It was destroyed in 1812 by a British and Native American detachment led by Captain Peter Latouche Chambers (British 41st Regiment of Foot), the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, and the Wyandot leader Roundhead. Port Miami’s destruction became lost over the years to the historical memory and consciousness of Ohio. Salvage excavations of the Spafford farmstead (1810–1823) in 1977 and its history provide an archaeological window within which to view Port Miami’s obliteration and its recovery to the community heritage of the state.

Abstract:
For nearly a hundred years after its creation, the French Foreign Legion consisted exclusively of infantry units, supplemented only temporarily by “mounted” infantry units, depending on the needs of the theatre of operations. These units did not exceed the size of a company, and their members used their mounts (horses, mules, camels) only to move around, and continued to fight their battles on foot. Based on this positive experience, the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment was created in 1922, and was then successfully deployed in Syria and Morocco between the two World Wars, and with varying effectiveness in France, Tunisia and Germany during the Second World War. The First Indochina War broke out in 1946 and the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment joined the conflict in Southeast Asia in 1947, only to leave in 1955 as one of the last French units. During the war, the ranks of the troop, composed mainly of foreign nationals, were reinforced within a short time by a significant number of local soldiers to alleviate the permanent shortage. In addition, depending on local geography, the unit was equipped with armoured and amphibious vehicles, and sometimes ships, which were used to develop new tactics and operate effectively in these new and very different circumstances. In view of its successes, the unit was greatly improved, originally consisting of 7 squadrons, and by the end of the conflict it had grown to 18 squadrons.

Abstract:
Stature is one of the most important elements in the identification of a person. Many different anthropometric dimensions can be used in the estimation of stature. Establishing the identity of an individual from body fragments has become an important necessity in recent times due to natural and man-made disasters. This study was performed on 226 Gurung soldiers of Gorkha regiment of Indian Army. The studied soldier’s age range was 18 years - 48 years. Six anthropometric measurements (Stature, Hand length, Arm length, Standing knee height, Foot length and Leg length) were measured and stature is estimated with the help of these measurements. There was no significant difference between actual and estimated stature. All anthropometric measurements were highly correlated with stature at significance level p< 0.001 but leg length had better correlation (r=0.816) compared to other variables. Staturecan be estimated with the help of standing knee height (r=0.686, p<0.001) and arm length (r=0.653, p<0.001). It can be concluded that leg length was a very good predictor of stature estimation for the studied population.

Abstract:
9066 Background: Combination of etoposide and cisplatin/carboplatin is the most commonly used initial chemoptherapy regiment in extensive-stage small cell lung cancer. A meta-analysis released that, there is no significant difference was observed in Objective response rate(ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), or overall survival(OS) in patients(pts) receiving cisplatin-base versus carboplatin-based regimens. We performed a single-arm phase II trial to determine if maintain of single-agent anlotinib, an oral VEGFR, FGFR, PDGFR and c-Kit tyrosine kinase inhibitor, after 4-6 cycles of anlotinib + etoposide + cisplatin/carboplatin would improve PFS and ORR. Methods: SCLC pts (18~70 yrs, extensive-stage SCLC, no prior systematic chemo/ICI therapy) received anlotinib( 12mg QD from day 1 to 14 of a 21-day cycle) +etoposide( 100mg/m2, d1~3 of 21-day cycle)+ cisplatin( 75-80mg/m2,Q3W)/ carboplatin( AUC = 5~6,Q3W) for 4~6 cycles, and anlotinib maintenance. The dual-primary endpoint were PFS and ORR. Results: Between Oct.2018 to Dec.2019, 27 pts enrolled and included in the efficacy and safety analysis: age: median 62 (range:44-71); male 93%; cisplatin/ carboplatin/ both 11%/78%/11%; 37%(10/27) of pts required chemotherapy dose modification only, and the other 30% (8/27) of pts required anlotinib+ chemotherapy dose modification. The median PFS was 9.61 months ( 95%Cl:7.80-11.42). ORR was 77.78% (21/27), disease control rate (DCR) was 96.30% (26/27).Toxicities≥grade 3 included: neutropenia 22%, leukopenia 11%, hand-foot syndrome 15%, nausea 4%, mucositis 4%, edema 4%, anorexia 4%, xerostomia 4% and fatigue 4%; there were no grade 5 toxicities. Conclusions: Combined treatment with anlotinib plus etoposide and cisplatin/carboplatin for treatment-naive extensive-stage SCLC was well tolerated with promising PFS and ORR to date but showed no new risk for AEs. Based on these encouraging results, phase III trial of anlotinib plus etoposide and cisplatin/carboplatin for treatment-naive SCLC has been warranted.

Abstract:
Unlike existing studies that examined each of the two World Wars and Africans separately, this study explores African participation and experiences in the First and Second World Wars in Northern Rhodesia (colonial Zambia) together during the period, 1914–1948. A lot has been written on the history of the World Wars in colonial Africa. However, there is not much literature that focuses on African participation and experiences during the two world wars. This study is focused on the core theme, that is, the role played by Africans in both World Wars. This is the main theme that informs the study. The core theme is sub-divided into the following three sub-themes: the making of the Northern Rhodesia Police under the British South African Company, BSACo, a Chartered Company that prohibited by law from housing a standing; recruitment of personnel for the Northern Rhodesia Regiment; the role played by traditional authorities in the recruitment of ‘Askari’ – the Foot Soldiers and the ‘Tenga-Tenga’ War Carriers and the role of government propaganda while bringing to the fore African agency during both Wars. Also discussed in the study is the demobilisation process in which African servicemen – the Foot Soldiers and the ‘Tenga-Tenga’ War Carriers – felt cheated by an Empire-wide system of racial discrimination and hierarchy. Although an expanded government propaganda machinery contributed to the growth of an African political voice in Northern Rhodesia during the period, 1914–1948, that political voice neither included nor translated to much debate or discussion about the concerns of African ex-servicemen and their personal affairs. The study equally examines how their state of affairs affected the relationship between the ex-servicemen and their traditional leaders who were active in the recruitment process that brought them into the Wars in the first place. The study concludes with the re-examination of the older arguments that African servicemen did not play an active role in nationalist politics after the World Wars, and submits otherwise, that is, that they actually did.

Chang, M. "Growing a commons food regime : theory and practice." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1396231/.

Full text
Abstract:
Existing food regimes theory has a strong analytical power to help us understand the reality of contemporary global food politics and has a political commitment to provoke a new direction in our thinking. Yet, it falls short on how we can actually engage with such a change, especially with the pressing need for strategic alliances among multiple food movements which aim to advance a regime change. By exploring both theory and practice, this research addresses this gap and responds to a call for a new food regime in the 21st century. Firstly, this research proposes the notion of growing a commons food regime. With care as the core, an integrative framework for growing a commons food regime is presented, drawing on reviews of literature on food regimes theory, commons regimes, adaptive governance and critical food studies. This framework aims at building an adaptive capacity to transform the current food system towards sustainability. Secondly, applying the framework as ‘a tool of insight’, the current landscape of community food initiatives was investigated in order to identify implications and opportunities to grow a commons food regime in London. Finally, considering the significant role of universities in helping to form multiple and reciprocal connections with society; and as a catalyst and an experiment in integrating theory and practice in growing a commons food regime, a journey of university-led community food initiatives was carried out at University College London (UCL) as a case study. On reflection, the thesis suggests ways forward in continuing to grow care-based commons food regimes through community food initiatives at UCL. With our growing adaptive capacity, we might enter a new epoch of history.

Abstract:

Friesen, Matthew. "Parsing the Palate: A Mixed Methods Analysis of the U.S. Food Advocacy Network." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18739.

Full text
Abstract:
The U.S. food system is afflicted by a variety of social, ecological, and economic predicaments including hunger, food access inequalities, soil and water degradation, and lack of community control over food. Scholars and activists agree that in order for U.S. food movement actors to affect significant system-wide change, players must bridge a multitude of issue areas and ideological differences. Despite thorough analyses of local and regional food systems, little research has been conducted on either national level advocacy perspectives or the ties that bind and divide food advocacy coalitions. This dissertation's central research question examines how the U.S food advocacy movement works to resist the hegemonic domination of the national food system by state and corporate actors. To answer this question, this project develops a social network analysis of 71 national-level food advocacy actors, compiles web-based issue and tax data, and conducts 36 semi-structured interviews with senior food activist staff. Social movement literature and Antonio Gramsci's concepts of counter-hegemonic movements and wars of position inform the findings and reveal the national food movement's nascent propensity to unite cultural and class struggles to create significant pressure for systematic change in the U.S. food system. Additionally, this research tests existing theoretical work related to the food advocacy network and distinctions between interest group and social movement type organizations. This dissertation reveals that despite most activists' conviction that a constellation of agri-business and state policies dominate the U.S. food system, significant network rifts, framing dilemmas, strategic conflicts, and resource complexities prevent national food activists from generating a robust challenge to hegemonic food system actors.

Wang, Kuan-Chi. "Border Assemblages: The Political Economy of Asian Regional Vegetable Trade." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/24229.

Full text
Abstract:
In my dissertation, I study the spatio-temporal variegation and transnational circulation of vegetable commodities using the case of edamame beans (the largest frozen vegetable sector in Asia). My dissertation shows that food production and trade in East Asia have fundamentally changed over the past several decades. Rapid development has lifted the region out of subsistence and into middle-class and luxury consumption. As a result, East Asia is quickly becoming the center of the global food economy. The development of edamame industries is central to explaining the transformation of the agriculture and food industries across the region. I employ a mixed methods approach that includes participant-observation, semi-structured interviews with 40 edamame farmers and entrepreneurs, and GIS mapping, alongside Social Network Analysis (SNA). In my analysis, I coin the concept of “border assemblages,” arguing that edamame trade incorporates network and state-territorial characteristics. Building on this approach, my research bridges two social science sub-fields that scholars have often applied empirically but not theoretically: international politics and regional agrarian development. Three novel findings emerge from this research: First, my research adds to the literature on Asian colonialism by showing how the Japanese Empire and the post-World War Two (WWII) U.S. Cold War regime territorialized East Asia to develop a regulatory assemblage of regional agricultural production and trade. Second, after the 1980s, a new type of food regime emerged in East Asia following the introduction of new World Trade Organization food safety regulations that reterritorialized the food production networks in Asia. My research conceptualizes the emergence of the new food regimes in an East Asian context according to the political economy and ecology of edamame trade among Taiwan, Japan, and China. Third, another strand of my research contributes to the geopolitical understanding of the edamame trade with regard to food scares and contract farming. I extend the definition of contract farming to encompass international regulatory bodies and argue that trade agreements and international food laws, such as the Codex Alimentarius, have significantly shaped the agrarian landscape in Asia.

Zvada, Simbarashe Peter. "Optimization of 1st-line antituberculosis dosing regimens using a population pharmacokinetic approach: food effects, drug combinations and pharmacological effects." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9532.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
The aim of this thesis was to evaluate optimal doses of 1st-line antituberculosis dosing regimens using a population pharmacokinetic approach, quantify food effects, drug combinations and pharmacological effects. The population pharmacokinetics of rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide in 76 children with tuberculosis were described using a population pharmacokinetic approach, and then Monte Carlo simulation were performed to evaluate adequacy of newly recommended weight band based doses in World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. Food effect (breakfast) was evaluated on rifapentine pharmacokinetic data in 35 healthy male volunteers. Effect of co-administered intermittent rifapentine on the pharmacokinetics of moxifloxacin was evaluated in 28 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, who participated in a multicenter controlled clinical trial evaluating high dose rifapentine in combination with moxifloxacin. The moxifloxacin pharmacokinetic model, together with a previously published ofloxacin pharmacokinetic model, was used to evaluate the efficacy between moxifloxacin and ofloxacin. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic summary variables of rifapentine and moxifloxacin were evaluated as predictors of treatment outcome. Simulations based on the final models suggested that with the new guidelines, and utilizing available paediatric fixed dose combinations, children will receive adequate rifampicin exposures when compared to adults, but with a larger degree of variability. However, pyrazinamide and isoniazid exposures in many children will be lower than in adults. For food effect, all meals compared with the fasting state, high fat meal had the greatest effect on rifapentine oral bioavailability, increasing it by 86%; bulky low-fat, bulky-high-fat, and chicken soup resulted in 33%, 46%, and 49% increases in rifapentine oral bioavailability, respectively. Similar trends were observed for the metabolite 25-desacetyl rifapentine. For drug-resistant tuberculosis, using a target ratio of ≥100 for multidrug-resistant strains (without resistance to injectable agents or fluoroquinolones), the cumulative fraction of response (CFR) was 88% for moxifloxacin and only 43% for ofloxacin. The higher dose of 800 mg moxifloxacin was needed to achieve a CFR target of ≥90%. In terms of drug-interaction, rifapentine increased the clearance of moxifloxacin by 8% during antituberculosis treatment compared to that after treatment completion without rifapentine. Also, the effect moxifloxacin and rifapentine pharmacokinetics indices on outcome treatment outcome support that combined effect of longer treatment duration and higher rifapentine exposures are associated with better treatment response. In summary, the newer WHO doses for children may give lower pyrazinamide and isoniazid exposures in many children than in adults. Meals have a substantial impact on rifapentine exposure. Rifapentine did not result in a clinically significant change in moxifloxacin exposure. Moxifloxacin is more efficacious than ofloxacin in the treatment of MDR-TB. The combined effect of longer treatment duration, higher rifapentine exposures are associated with better treatment outcome, but could not differentiate which major factor needed for favourable outcome.

Benitez Chavez, Roberto. "Metrology in the Quality of Life." In NCSL International Workshop & Symposium. NCSL International, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.51843/wsproceedings.2015.03.

Full text
Abstract:
Quality of Life is defined as the physical, intellectual, emotional, or cultural satisfaction in a person's everyday life. Quality is a characteristic allowing for excellence. To improve quality we always say; “what is not defined can not be measured, what is not measured can not be improved and what does not get better, it always degrades”. Then if we try to measure anything, we should apply Metrology. To apply Metrology to anything, we also say; “measure what is measurable and make measurable what it is not”. ¿How can we measure the Quality of Life?, this concept as used in healthcare delivery defines the standard by which outcomes for the total patient can be assessed. Pleasing personal appearance, optimal vision and hearing, healthy skin, optimal nutrition with palatable and healthful food, good foot care with maintained mobility, an appropriate health care approach and life style regimen all and up to the basics necessary for Quality of Life. In all industries Quality of Life factors impact performance and productivity. The main factors are health, education, safety, family, stress, work, psychological and spiritual components. This paper presents how the Metrology has impacted along the life of the author and how has defined his Quality of Life.

Full text
Abstract:
Liquid-liquid segmented flows in microchannels fabricated on polymer test chips were investigated experimentally. Polymer test chips were prepared using hot embossing of polycarbonate (PC) sheets with micro-milled brass mold inserts. Three different configurations of microchannels were prepared with injection to test channels expansion ratios of 16, 4 and 2 and a fixed test channel geometry. Deionized water with blue food-coloring dye (1% v/v) was used as a dispersed fluid at flow rates (QD) between 0.5 and 60 μl/min. The carrier fluid was perfluorocarbon (FC 3283) with nonionic fluorous-soluble surfactant (Perfluorooctanol, 10% v/v) at flow rates (QC) between 3 and 25 μl/min. The two fluids were injected separately into the chips. Droplet and Plug flows with transient Irregular Segmented flows between two flow regimes were mainly observed in the test channels of the three different chips. Flow pattern maps and transitions between flow regimes were determined in terms of a fixed homogeneous carrier fluid volumetric flow ratio (βC) to compare the effect of the expansion ratios from the injection to the test channels. The droplet and plug regimes were shifted to higher carrier and lower dispersed fluid superficial velocities and the plug flow regime was broader with the lower expansion ratio channels. The transient irregular segmented flow was favored in the higher expansion channel ratio and the interval of transient irregular segmented flow between droplet and plug flow regimes were shorter for the low expansion channel ratios. This is evidence that flow regime maps in micro-channels are not universal and depend on the configuration part of the micro-injection system. The length of the dispersed segmented flows and the distance between consecutive droplets or plugs as a function of βC were determined by image processing of frames acquired via CCD camera with bright field illumination. The average length of the dispersed fluid was shown to scale approximately with βC to the −1.2 power. Velocities of the dispersed droplet and plug flows were measured using double-pulsed laser illumination and were found to be 1.25 ± 0.049 and 1.46 ± 0.077 times faster than the superficial velocity of the segmented flow respectively. Two-phase pressure drop measurements were also carried out for all flow regimes and associated trends were correlated with changes in flow topology. Comparisons of experimental pressure drop with the predictions for a modified Lockhart-Martinelli correlation were also made.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past, the constitution of the private land ownership right was the main desideratum of the agrarian reforms of the last decades, while the present route aims to increase the size of the agricultural holdings by initiating the lease process regarded as a classic form of exploiters acting as a contractor for the Romanian agrarian relations. This objective necessity of restructuring the state units and of the performance of the agricultural activity resides in the wide range of activities on the land market that concentrates around the regime of the land property in order to correctly appreciate the transactions in the lease market. The present paper aims to analyze the role and importance of land leasing by studying the average size of the agricultural exploitation of the last decade, registered at the level of the development area South-Muntenia, especially in Calarasi county. The result of the present research serves to demonstrate the role of the lease, which the lack of agrarian policy cannot prove its effectiveness having a non-stimulatory character for the owner.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the convective drying of apple rings without any extra-heating of the processing ambient air. The lumped reaction engineering approach (REA) model has been employed to determine the rate of drying for the apple rings under forced convection considered as a normal processing regime. The algorithm implies determination the activation energy curve from the accurate ‘reference’ measurements of the drying rate under natural convection conditions. The required for the model implementation mass transfer coefficients for the apple ring samples under natural and forced conditions were obtained in the series of customized experiments. The study does extend the application of REA for the limiting simplest case of convective drying of thick samples under ambient temperature condition."

Full text
Abstract:
The Cerrado is a natural biome occupying 25 per cent of Brazil’s surface. Compared to the Amazon, it is relatively unknown to international audiences, yet it is currently the world’s largest agricultural frontier. Intensive soybean and beef production are driving deforestation, water depletion, habitat loss, and land grabbing. Emphasising the scale of land-based inequality and conflicts, this briefing exposes the Cerrado as a territory of martyrdom, contrasting the ‘miracle’ portrayed by the dominant agri-food regime. Resistance struggles within the region are outlined and recommendations looking to challenge the success narrative of agribusiness and to move towards territorial justice are presented.

Golub, Alla, Benjamin Henderson, Thomas Hertel, Steven Rose, Misak Avetisyan, and Brent Sohngen. Effects of GHG Mitigation Policies on Livestock Sectors. GTAP Working Paper, July 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.wp62.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we have investigated effects of GHG mitigation policies on livestock sectors. We used a global computable general equilibrium GTAP-AEZ-GHG model with explicit unique regional land types, land uses and related GHG emissions. The model is then augmented with cost and GHG response information from partial equilibrium approaches to abatement of land-based greenhouse gas emissions. With this framework we analyze changes in regional livestock output, sector competitiveness and regional food consumption under different climate change mitigation policy regimes. Scenarios we have considered differ by participation/exclusion of agricultural sectors and non-Annex I countries, as well as policy instruments. The imposition of carbon tax in agriculture has adverse affects on food consumption, especially in developing countries. The reductions in food consumption are smaller if the agricultural producer subsidy is introduced to compensate for carbon tax the producers pay. The global forest carbon sequestration subsidy effectively controls emission leakage when carbon tax is imposed only in Annex I regions. The sequestration subsidy bids land away from agriculture in non-Annex 1 regions and prevents expansion of agricultural sectors. Though the sequestration subsidy allows reduction of GHG emissions, if implemented, the policy may adversely affect food security and agricultural development in developing countries.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this research is to determine if plastics-degrading gut bacterial communities from a nonoptimal insect host can be successfully transplanted into the gut of the optimal mealworm host for large scale composting. To achieve this goal, foundational questions about basic mealworm husbandry needed to be addressed, including proper housing and feeding regimes, expected plastics degradation rates, and survivability on plastics as a food source. This technical note serves as a mealworm husbandry protocol and a guide for lessons learned in the early stages of experimentation dealing with establishment of plastics-degrading mealworm colonies.

Short, Samuel. Alternatives to single-use plastics in food packaging and production. Food Standards Agency, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.taf512.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid evidence assessment undertaken by RSM UK Consulting LLP (RSM) and Dr Samuel Short (University of Cambridge) aimed to develop an understanding of the alternatives to single-use plastics in food packaging and production in terms of their risks and opportunities, as well as potential future developments. Literature from within and beyond the UK was gathered from academic databases and reports published by government and non-governmental organisations such as environmental charities. Evidence from the literature was supplemented by findings from a workshop with experts in the field from a variety of industries such as academia, manufacturing, and government. Two broad groups of alternatives were established: material/product alternatives (traditional materials, natural fibres, biopolymers synthesised from biomass, biopolymers synthesised from bioderived monomers, biopolymers produced by microorganisms) and, and system/process alternatives (reducing, reusing, and recycling food packaging and, active and intelligent packaging). These alternatives and systems vary considerably in terms of their properties, such as effectiveness as a barrier to moisture or contamination, convenience for consumers, production costs, and potential for commercialisation. Our review also highlighted gaps in the current knowledge, for example in terms of consumer acceptance and carbon footprint at each stage of their life cycle. The capacity to produce bioplastics (i.e. biopolymers that look and feel similar to conventional plastics but are made from natural materials rather than fossil fuels and are biodegradable or compostable) is anticipated to increase globally from 2.1 million tonnes in 2019 to 6.3 million tonnes by 2027. This growth appears to be enabled by increased consumer awareness of environmental issues and existing regulation and legislation encouraging the development and establishment of a circular economy. However, there are barriers that may challenge this growth. These include already established industry regimes, high production cost of novel materials and a lack of waste management guidance. Overall, fossil-based conventional plastics are a very cheap, versatile material compared to the alternatives currently being developed and tested. Because of this, they might remain the preferred industry choice for certain applications, while alternatives continue to be optimised and commercially scaled. To add to this, the reviewed evidence suggests that there is unlikely to be one single solution to the single-use plastics problem. The solution will likely draw on a range of materials and systems depending on food type and context.

Douglas, Thomas, M. Jorgenson, Hélène Genet, Bruce Marcot, and Patricia Nelsen. Interior Alaska DoD training land wildlife habitat vulnerability to permafrost thaw, an altered fire regime, and hydrologic changes. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43146.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate change and intensification of disturbance regimes are increasing the vulnerability of interior Alaska Department of Defense (DoD) training ranges to widespread land cover and hydrologic changes. This is expected to have profound impacts on wildlife habitats, conservation objectives, permitting requirements, and military training activities. The objective of this three-year research effort was to provide United States Army Alaska Garrison Fort Wainwright, Alaska (USAG-FWA) training land managers a scientific-based geospatial framework to assess wildlife habitat distribution and trajectories of change and to identify vulnerable wildlife species whose habitats and resources are likely to decline in response to permafrost degradation, changing wildfire regimes, and hydrologic reorganization projected to 2100. We linked field measurements, data synthesis, repeat imagery analyses, remote sensing measurements, and model simulations focused on land cover dynamics and wildlife habitat characteristics to identify suites of wildlife species most vulnerable to climate change. From this, we created a robust database linking vegetation, soil, and environmental characteristics across interior Alaska training ranges. The framework used is designed to support decision making for conservation management and habitat monitoring, land use, infrastructure development, and adaptive management across the interior Alaska DoD cantonment and training land domain.

Full text
Abstract:
Age dependent programs are responsible for the physiological and developmental differences of young and mature plants. These include a range of morphological characters such as leaf shape and leaf composition (waxes, lignin etc..) but also different in developmental potentials. Apical buds of juvenile plants are vegetative, while those of mature plants can be reproductive. Likewise, basal buds form in the axills of juvenile leaves have different fates than distal buds formed in the axils of mature leaves. The goal of our joint project is to understand and exploit theses age related programs for specific improvement of crop plants. To that end both the WIS group and the PGEC group are using mutants with age related defects as well as modified expression of miR156 to modify age related programs in crop plants- Tomato and potato in Israel and Maize, switchgrass and Brchipodium in the US. In the US, major effort were made to: Characterize the contribution of selected miR156 target genes to yield component traits of maize. Functional analysis of microRNAs and their targets in new crop plants. In Israel, the research progressed in several directions: Understanding the interplay between age dependent programs and the potential of tomato and potato meristems to produce tubers. Evaluation of the agronomic value of mutants that alter flowering regime in side shoots in general, and in the sympodial buds in particular Characterization of wild type axillary buds, comparing shoot ontogeny of gradually maturing apices from basal and distal positions along the main shoot of tomato.
