This thesis addresses the problem of extracting object masks from video sequences. It presents an online, dynamic system for creating appearance masks of an arbitrary object of interest contained in a video sequence, while making minimal assumptions about the appearance and motion of the objects and scene being imaged. It examines a region-based approach, in contrast to more recently popular pixel-wise approaches to segmentation to illustrate the advantages in the reduction of the complexity of the labeling problem. In this study, the images are firstly transformed to YUV color space and a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to describe the color distribution of a single pixel. To effectively and efficiently model the shadow, we obtain the shadow GMM directly from the learned background GMM. However, there are too few shadow samples for updating so that it makes the GMSM converge slowly. To handle with this, the neighbor ratio of th

The method computes a saliency map which describes the attractive regions in an image by the saliency-based visual attention model and a segmented image which consists of uniform color regions performed by the mean shift algorithm. Then a thresholding technique is applied to detect important target regions on the saliency map. These regions combined with the segmentation results construct the important joint regions. The method uses cropping a

With the increasing amount of images, the tools of image search and management are in great demand. For this reason, many image retrieval systems have been developed, which can be roughly classified into two types: text-based and content-based. In text-based approaches, images are manually annotated with texts, which are then used for image retrieval by an image database-man

The WBMT algorithm contains a removing process of redundant colors via the Haar wavelet decomposition and a histogram-based color aggregation (HBCA) process to segment colorific regions. The representative centroids of segmented regions can be directly obtained from the WBMT algorithm to act as the in
