Bury, Harriet. "Geographies, histories, boundaries : the formation of a regional cultural idiom in colonial North India." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2006. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28814/.

Abstract:
The dominant cultural formation which emerged in several areas of public and political life in north India at the beginning of the twentieth century presented itself as a national culture which was able to articulate and represent the vast and disparate interests of the new cultural-political entity of the nation. In fact the concepts, terms and vocabulary of this national culture were derived from a predominantly Vaishanava cultural and religious order propagated by the largely high caste, merchant communities of north India, which itself had been recast and reformulated to negotiate with and

<p> Comprehensive planning can help communities engage in purposeful and sustainable land use development. Previous research has indicated that Indian reservations in the United States often face unique roadblocks to these planning efforts: checkerboard patterns of tribal and nontribal ownership, and the presence of both tribal and local governments exercising land use authority within the same shared space. These roadblocks can lead to uncooperative, uncoordinated, or unsustainable development. Despite these noted problems, there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding so

The stable isotopes 2H and 18O, combined with noble gases and radioisotopes (e.g., 3H, 14C, 36Cl), are used to infer groundwater age and climate during recharge. Flow regimes within low-velocity flowpaths and long residence times could allow an aquitard-aquifer diffusive flux to alter isotope abundance. Consequently, the diffusion of isotopes (e.g., 14C, 2H and 18O) between aquifers and confining layers needs to be considered in such conditions. In this study, COMSOL Multiphysics was used to determine if diffusion of 18O (and 2H by proxy) from a bounding aquitard could explain observed downgra

In this thesis, we study the relationship between the geometric shape of a region in the plane, and certain probabilistic information about the behavior of Brownian particles inside the region. The probabilistic information is contained in the function h(r), called the harmonic measure distribution function. Consider a domain Ω in the plane, and fix a basepoint z0. Imagine lining the boundary of this domain with fly paper and releasing a million fireflies at the basepoint z0. The fireflies wander around inside this domain randomly until they hit a wall and get stuck in the fly paper. What frac

This thesis attempts to address the problem within heritage areas that has arisen as a result of the widespread municipal amalgamations across Victoria over recent months. The problem is one of inconsistency in the heritage quality of buildings that come under heritage control. This inconsistency occurs when local government boundaries are altered so that two areas, formerly under the control of two different local governments, are joined to be administered by the same municipality. A situation is therefore created whereby different urban conservation zones within the same local govern

This is a summary report on some existing results and methods regarding the problem of determining the basins of attraction of dynamical systems (in particular, two-dimensional diffeomorphisms) when there is a coexistence of attractors. Based on the work of Helena Nusse and James Yorke, it presents existence and characterization results for a certain kind of basin boundaries (namely, the Wada boundaries). The key feature of their approach is to redefine the idea of a basin boundary by introducing the notion of a `basin cell', which bypasses the problem of exactly locating the attractor of a sy
