This thesis consists of three papers examining the impact of history on long-run development processes through the channels of institution and culture. The first paper studies land revenue institutions in colonial India and identifies a multi-channel mechanism through which variations in that institution have long-run consequences for agricultural investment and productivity. The second paper examines the relationship between various dimensions of cultural diversity and growth in Indian districts using an instrumental variables strategy. These results find the strongest impacts for religious diversity. The significant impact of religious diversity in increasing productivity and reducing poverty may be due to increased emphasis on secular institutions in the face of religious competition. The last paper studies the formation of cultural values as a channel through which development outcomes may be impacted by initial conditions. We find that inherent geographical traits render certain regions more likely to be agricultural, male-dominated societies with a lower propensity to worship female deities, which in turn leads to worse female literacy outcomes.

The work The diversified curriculum in schools of Boa Vista: on the border of the regional / local knowledge", aims to analyze how diversified curriculum is being carried out in state schools: AL, AS and MDB, in relation with regional and local knowledge of the Amazon, state of Roraima, the city of Boa Vista and its own reality of the subjects of the schools. The national and state official curriculum regulations govern and guide the organization and the curricular structure for the operation of the teaching and learning process in schools. However, gives priority to the knowledge of the common national base, according to what define and understand the universal science and flexes to regions, states and municipalities autonomy to complement the diversified party, whose knowledges should consider the economic, social, political and regional cultural / local aspects. In general, it is observed that this curricular structure is assumed in practice of the three schools and set up a distinguished curricular border compared to the knowledge of the realities and contexts of other regions and states of Brazil. However, the identification of what would be a national curriculum and a regional / local curriculum in this border, presents complexities, also perceived in the curricular experiences of the three schools, reflected in the curriculum development dynamism as a whole. Regarding the diverse curriculum, is evident in the teaching strategies of teachers, outstanding value to the knowledge of the regional reality / local and a hard work for the understanding and realization of this curriculum that, even designed in the requirements and developed in the practice of state schools in Boa Vista, it does not have the right political and pedagogical treatment, when realized in the process of teaching and learning. In curricular practice of the three schools, there is an operating distance between the requirements and the reality of diversified curriculum being developed. The proposals indicate the need for effective pedagogical educational policies that will support the historical and social dimensions of diverse curriculum and support the teaching practice with the improvement of regional and local knowledge, materialization logistics and human resources for pedagogical coordination of the activities that the curriculum.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the state-sponsored rise of local patriotism in the post-1961 period, interpreting this as part of the effort to strengthen popular support for and the legitimacy of the Soviet regime during the second phase of de-Stalinization. It shifts the analytical focus away from the Secret Speech of 1956, the time of Khrushchev’s full-scale assault on Stalin and his legacy, to the Twenty-Second Party Congress of 1961, the inauguration of a utopian and pioneering plan to build Communism by 1980. The thesis considers how this famously forward-looking programme gave rise to an institutionalized retrospectivism as Soviet policy makers turned to the past to mobilize popular support for socialist construction. It examines how this process played out in the Russian North West, where Soviet citizens were encouraged to turn inwards to examine their local history and traditions, and to reread these through the lens of Soviet socialism. The thesis takes as a case study the towns of Novgorod, Pskov, and Vologda, where the state-sponsored regeneration of local traditions significantly impacted on the self-perception of local communities. In the first part, I look at the strategies for representing and displaying local culture in pubic institutions: the textual treatment and symbolic ordering of urban space in local tourist guides; the heritage movement and the attribution of cultural value to certain objects from the local landscape; and the primary focuses of the exhibitive 'gaze' in local museums. The second part of the thesis shifts the focus from institutionalized culture to popular culture, examining the informal practices and oral traditions that exist alongside the authoritative discourses of social identity in the post-Soviet period. The popular interpretation of public sculpture, the collective imagination of urban space, and the 'common knowledge' of the past as it is articulated in oral narratives are the focuses of discussion.

Frank, Jane Elizabeth. "Regenerating Regional Culture: A Study of the International Book Town Movement." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365260.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the international Book Town Movement that, from its beginnings in the small Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye in the early 1960s, has escalated to incorporate more than 50 villages and towns in 27 countries. This phenomenon has enabled peripheral communities in Europe and across the globe to reclaim their economic futures and impact on the cultural sphere as increasingly powerful sites and sources of creativity. This study seeks to understand the reasons for this renaissance of interest in the preservation of traditional print culture in the countryside at a point in history when the book publishing industry is in a state of flux as it adapts to new digital technologies and globalisation of markets, leading to a clarification of the relationship between new books and the second-hand book economy. At the centre of this investigation is an acknowledgement of the book as a unique item of cultural consumption and a catalyst in book town creation – at once a remarkable artefact and a springboard for contemporary cultural debate. Essential to an understanding of book towns is their location on the geographical periphery and their capacity to sustain regional culture and identity. This thesis analyses innovative book town examples from diverse parts of the world using four key research methods: site-based research, case study research, cultural policy research and book culture research. This research aims to inform a broader discussion of regional regeneration and cultural policy development through an investigation of book towns as ‘down on their luck’ places, reanimated to celebrate remarkable pasts and designed to captivate a growing middle-class cohort drawn to nostalgia, history, cultural heritage and tranquil rural settings that deliver both intellectual stimulation and wellbeing. The synergy of the book town ethos with a number of evolving global tourism trends – including cultural tourism and, more recently, post-tourism – has heightened their desirability. By exploring the history and origins of the Book Town Movement, the thesis links book towns to the entrepreneurship of bibliophiles seeking more utopian lifestyles, and culture-led regeneration by governments wanting to harness their capacity to increase social capital and generate economic revival.

This paper discusses Roraima`s culture and identity and some developments from the hybridization process represented in the art work of the artist, Jorge Augusto Cardoso. For this purpose, we used theoretical and methodological foundations from Cultural Studies to cover Culture, Identity, Visual Language, Regional Art, Regionalism, Regionality, Hybridization and Representation in order to analyze the process of identity formation of Roraima, and to understand its elements involved in this process, which allowed us to view the forms of "being" Roraima, revealed in the artist imagery scenery, riddled by conflicts and differences. In this light, various forms of symbolic representations valued in the region, created by artist, were studied, and new concepts were extracted at the same time generating new readings. Thus, this analysis gives possibilities of identity developed in the system of representation contained in the work, in which spaces were designed and built, enabling subjects to position themselves and to build new identities; to appropriate and to reconstruct identities for their use.

This thesis analyzes the relationship of organizational culture with the Brazilian regional culture. Our assumption of regional differentiation is rooted in a literature that considers the cultural distinctions at the subnational level and its influence on the culture of organizations. The interest of our research focused on two main issues: 1) The organizational culture of a filial, which operates in a region of Brazilian culture different from their headquarters, moves away from the headquarters point of influence and also in relation to other filial? How the organization deals with it? 2) There is difference in values and practices between the headquarters and filial in other regions of Brazilian cultural and between the subsidiaries to each other in different regions? How the organization deals with it? In this sense, the objective of this research is to investigate a Brazilian business organization and its filial in different regions of Brazil in order to identify: 1) The differences between culture and organizational practices of the headquarters and the filial and between subsidiaries; 2) Differences in the relationship of the parent company and filial of other regions and how this influences the practices and organizational policies. To reach these goals, we rely on an interpretative epistemology research, exploratory and qualitative guidance, that used the research strategy the case study, using semi-structured interviews to compare the parent company and two filial from a food company, present in different regions of the country. The choice of a traditional company with national presence could illustrate the regional issue of our assumption, however, the data lead us to another direction. The moment the company is experiencing, which operated from a change in strategic focus, signals the importance of key aspects of organizational culture in transition which makes the regional issue important. We realized that the ancient culture has not led to a new data point to a cultural fragmentation, due to: 1) The diminishing importance of the founder, 2) The professionalization of management, 3) The progressive power transfer from Fortaleza to Sao Paulo, 4) The redirection to the consumer market, 5) The more complex control and more aggressive goals, 6) Reducing the autonomy of the units.

U.S. Marine Corps recently developed the Regional, Culture, and Language Familiarization Program (RCLF), which assigns newly promoted sergeants and commissioned officers to one of the 17 regions established by the RCLF office. As of now, there is no formal process established in assigning Marines to one of the 17 regions. The assignment is done manually and oftentimes, by random allocation without a standard operating procedure. We developed two integer-programming models and a matching algorithm that utilizes top trading cycle and serial dictatorship. These models optimize the assignment based on Marines and USMC preferences. We find that the benchmark integer programing model is the best in terms of assigning most Marines within their top four choices. Regardless, satisfaction rate of any of the three models are higher than the random assignment model.

Abstract:
Studies of England during the Reformation period have been broad-ranging and often controversial. Ever changing perspectives and altering interpretations of the archival materials, alongside a lasting interest in the process of religious change make this a topic of enduring interest. For Yorkshire, first studied by Dickens some 70 years ago, recent approaches have opened the way for a return to the ecclesiastical archives and have created a need for their re-interpretation in the light of work by historians such as Shagan and Hoyle. This thesis examines religious change in Reformation Yorkshire in the context of regional culture and .resistance. The extent to which these three issues were intertwined influenced the ways in which Yorkshire towns, villages and parishes received religious change, the ways in which they resisted it, and the ways in which elements of reform became adopted as part of evolving local cultures. The county witnessed extremes of belief on both sides of the confessional divide, from early engagement at Hull to continued conservatism at Whitby, whilst the majority of the population continued to attend church and conform to the religion they were offered. Resistance to change ranged from open rebellion to sullen acquiescence, and included more subtle and underground forms of opposition. As religious change became more embedded in societies it is possible to see its influence in even the most traditional forms ofregional culture. Drawing on the extensive. ecc.lesiastical archives for the Diocese, and taking Dickens' interpretations as a starting point, this thesis demonstrates the complexity and diversity of the process of religious change in a region traditionally perceived to be isolated, backward and Catholic, and through local examples emphasises the continued importance of regional studies to a fuller understanding of the interaction of change, culture and resistance in early modern English religion.

Abstract:
Arizona has put time and effort into drought preparation—with water banking, surface water storage, and laws to dictate water planning for future developments. However, these securities are stretched thin and weakened by the wake of Arizona's rapid development. In this paper I will focus on the state catalyst for growth, and precedent for political decisions: Phoenix. With a political-economic foundation rooted in a culture of consumption, Phoenix has enabled boundless growth within its impermanent borders—gaining population and short-term economic benefits, while losing its unique desert identity. If adjustments are not made to current means of allocation and rates of demand, Phoenix will face a supply gap in the future. These issues are compounded by climate change, which threatens the longevity of surface water supplies. This paper will outline the strengths and highlight the shortfalls of previous water policies and projects, then discuss threats to available supplies. Embodying a desert identity and embracing conservation in both the urbanized area and economy will be key to the future success of Phoenix, as the necessary changes in policies that link water and land use planning will not be possible without an engaged public base.

Abstract:
Organization culture has been studies by distinct knowledge areas, such as Anthropology Sociology, Psychology and even Administration. The interest on this subject increased in the eighties and a lot of studies have been conducted, in order to understand better what organization culture really is and how it can be analyzed. However, few of those studies have been indeed concerned to understand how is the organization, what it does, how its members behave. Most of them are based on functionalist approach of an integrative and manageable culture, and they analyze only the artifacts. Nevertheless, one understand that culture studies are not are not directed only in that direction, but there are different ways to analyze organization culture, such as Interpretative Anthropology, which considers culture as an interlocking signs system. Ethnographic method consists on the survey of all possible data about a particular community, in order to know better its lifestyle or its specific culture. Sothat, besides using Interpretative Anthropology to build this search, one considered the ideas from Martin (1992, 2002). This author points that culture analysis must involve what is shared by the organization (integrator); what is manifested in groups (differentiator) and also the specific manifestations (fragmented). Based on this approach, this study aims to analyze shared, different and fragmented culture manifestations in the Hospital and show cultural regional traces that influence these manifestations. This was done as a case study in Uberlandia Cancer Hospital, using ethnography and semi-structured interview for data collection. These cultural manifestations raised the analysis categories: a) searching an identity as a Cancer Hospital; b) Concerning to patient health, integrity and well being; c) altruism; d) Power relationship; and e) Rules and Norms accomplishment. The first three categories were associated to integration approach, because they overpass any group formation and are common to any organization. The two are further differentiating and fragmented in some cases. Power relationship shows cultural expressions in specific groups, so they are differentiating. On the other hand there was fragmented manifestation considering power relation as bullying. The category Rules and Norms accomplishment is differentiated, because each employer group behaves in a different way within the organization. Each category is related to national and regional cultural traces, such as hospitality, religion devotion, habit of serving food, elitism, the Brazilian jeitinho and the valorization of relationship. This confirms our position that there are expressions of integration, differentiation and fragmentation which are directly related to cultural traces in HCa.

Abstract:
This thesis establishes the existence of large regional variations in Romania’s associative life and seeks to probe whether the origin of such discrepancies is cultural. I reveal that in the Hungarian-speaking enclave of Secui there are up to four-times more associations than in the rest of the country. Also, I show that Transylvania as a whole has a higher associational density and a more vibrant civil society than the rest of the country, in spite of the fact that that the legal and institutional constraints were similar throughout the country when civil society re-emerged in 1989. To assess the relevance of cultural factors as explanatory variables I use Geert Hofstede’s methodology, and find that of all 5 cultural dimensions (Power Distance, Individualism/Collectivism; Masculinity/Femininity; Uncertainty Avoidance and Short/Long Term Orientation), Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance seem the most relevant in terms of civil society development

Abstract:
This thesis reexamines the beginnings of Swedish hardboiled crime literature, in part tracking its lineage to American culture and unpacking Swedish identity. Following the introduction, the second chapter asserts how this genre began as a form of escapism, specifically in Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö’s Roseanna. The third chapter compares predecessor Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep with Roseanna, and how Sweden’s greater gender tolerance significantly outshining America’s is reflected in literature. The fourth chapter examines how Henning Mankell’s novels fail to fully accept Sweden’s complicity in neo-Nazism as an active component of Swedish identity. The final chapter reveals Helene Tursten’s Detective Inspector Huss engaging with gender and racial relations in unique ways, while also releasing the suppressive qualities found in the Swedish identity post-war. Therefore, this thesis will better contextualize the onset of the genre, and how its lineage reflects the fruits and the damages alike in the Swedish identity.

Abstract:
Regional identity and contested space were explored through the lens of four central Oregon Coast lighthouses. These beacons offered a look into the settlement of the Pacific Northwest and the complexity of contested space. Not only did the sentinels sit at the edge of a human battle with nature, but the keepers and their families lived in problematic conditions as well (both domestic and environmental). The living quarters and outbuildings provided by the U.S. lighthouse Board illustrated the cultural tastes of the period and the distillation of those tastes throughout the country as the nation expanded into and throughout the west. Further, these buildings were constructed within the pseudo military structure of light-tending and governed via principles predetermined by the u.s. Lighthouse Establishment. The daily lives of the lighthouse families conveyed the challenges of new settlement in, and the impact of lighthouses on, the West coast.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which regional communities appropriate their historic icons of the past, integrating these ‘markers of identity’ into the wider socio-economic context. It notes how nostalgia and the collective memory, together with a strong sense of place are reflected in celebrations which honour national and local historic characters and events, and observes the ways in which isolated rural towns reconcile their new tourist image with their pioneering past. It will be argued that the concepts of nation and national identity are increasingly being challenged by the need for a social and cultural identity which belongs to the local community. A range of diverse cultures and heritage sites has been studied in order to analyse the dilemmas facing local, outback, and Indigenous communities in reconstructing a regional identity today. The Heritage Trail can be seen as a symbolic rite of passage, and this thesis is indeed a personal journey divided into two major components. First, it takes the form of documentary, a visual component consisting of three video films which capture the heritage tourism product along the Tropic of Capricorn. On the Western Line documents the author’s journey on ‘The Spirit of the Outback’ from the central coast to Winton and Kynuna, the home of Waltzing Matilda in far western Queensland. Two further historical productions The Legend of King O'Malley and The Triumph and Tragedy of Tommy Wills record local and national narratives, which both deliver a controversial picture of federation politics and pioneer settlement, colonial sport and frontier war, each focusing on a regional perspective within a wider national vision. The second, written component reflects upon the role of the documentary maker in recording a social history of these diverse communities. It examines the auteur/director’s own perceptions of regional identity, and the oppositions and ambiguities of reality are juxtaposed with legend and myth. This essay explores the different layers of meaning inscribed within central images of cultural tourism such as: the Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach; the Australian Worker’s Heritage Centre at Barcaldine; local museums at Mt. Morgan and Emu Park; the Dreamtime Cultural Centre; and the South Sea Islanders’ Sugar Trail. Following Bennett and Bourdieu’s work on museum visitors, the author’s preliminary survey of tourists seeking Capricornia’s increasingly popular heritage destinations is discussed. In conclusion, it can be argued that the rapid growth of Central Queensland’s cultural centres, local museums, and bicentennially funded outdoor art and ‘unusual’ monuments, has produced new sources of income in a community desperately seeking to survive. The cultural tourist has become a major producer of the heritage industry which impacts strongly on regional identity.

In an effervescent national and regional scene in terms of audiovisual production, Paraíba stands out not only for its productivity, but also for the notoriety it has achieved through movie festivals that have taken place in the State. Presently, a total of seventeen events of the type were held, attracting innumerous people, moving the local economy and incentivizing artistic production and tourism. This research focuses on analyzing the relations between culture and development that come from movie festivals in the State; observing, in addition: the articulations of the Audiovisual Production Chain of Paraíba and investigate the social and economic effects of the cinematographic production in the State, seen that the initial hypothesis is based on the feedback relation that exists between cinema and society. For this, qualitative analysis and interviews were used as a manner of obtaining research data, based on the methodology of “impact study of projects or cultural actions”. The activities of movie festivals held in 2015 were analyzed, using a field diary; in addition to the use of a non- random sample, creators and/or organizers of these events were interviewed in addition to local traders in the service sector of the cities where the events were held. It was verified that the festivals essentially contribute to the socio-cultural development of municipalities and their respective populations, as well as the audiovisual production of Paraíba, being an important diffusion mechanism for knowledge and publicity for the sector.

Abstract:
Book Summary: Florence in the Early Modern World offers new perspectives on this important city by exploring the broader global context of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, within which the experience of Florence remains unique. By exploring the city’s relationship to its close and distant neighbours, this collection of interdisciplinary essays reveals the transnational history of Florence. The chapters orient the lenses of the most recent historiographical turns perfected in studies on Venice, Rome, Bologna, Naples, and elsewhere towards Florence. New techniques, such as digital mapping, alongside new comparisons of architectural theory and merchants in Eurasia, provide the latest perspectives about Florence’s cultural and political importance before, during, and after the Renaissance. From Florentine merchants in Egypt and India, through actual and idealized military ambitions in the sixteenth-century Mediterranean, to Tuscan humanists in late medieval England, the contributors to this interdisciplinary volume reveal the connections Florence held to early modern cities across the globe. This book steers away from the historical narrative of an insular Renaissance Europe and instead identifies the significance of other global influences. By using Florence as a case study to trace these connections, this volume of essays provides essential reading for students and scholars of early modern cities and the Renaissance.

Abstract:
This research aims to identify the design and the level of intercultural competence and its contribution to the professional career of graduate students of the University of Vale do Paraíba Paulista of the management and engineering courses. Know and respect other cultures is essential for the development of the individual, the region and the country, a major challenge of Brazilian universities to build an international higher education. Intercultural competence can be considered a differential of students and workers, to improve placement in the labor market and career development. The method used is quantitative, descriptive level and the data collection design. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires given to undergraduate students of engineering courses and administration. For data analysis we used quantitative techniques with the help of Excel software. The sample consisted of 595 students, and they of management courses, aeronautical engineering, environmental and sanitary engineering, civil engineering, control engineering and automation, power engineering, mechanical production engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and mechanical engineering. Results showed that students understand the Intercultural Competence primarily as `know how to accept the cultural differences within the organization and `to know about other cultures and languages. Students believe it is important to have intercultural competence at work, and quite important to have Intercultural Competence for the career. Regarding the level of intercultural competence, it was identified that the rating scale of the participants has the predominant result the average level for the dimensions of knowledge, skills and sensitivity and the high level to the size of attitudes. The global analysis also had the predominant classification the average level. It can be concluded that the objective was achieved and seeks to contribute with suggestions for actions to develop intercultural competence in the university context and the future career of students.

This study aims to analyze the different planning cultures of tourism metropolitan areas of Fortaleza-CE, Natal-RN, Recife-PE, and Salvador-BA. We started from the hypothesis that, while tourism in these Metropolitan Regions (MRs) have been developed from the same process of structuring the activity in the northeastern territory of Brazil, mainly by structuring programs, as PRODETUR I, believed that there were influential local factors that defined, over time, different orderings of tourism in these MRs. Therefore, the theoretical-conceptual analysis of geographical space was based on the definition of Estaba (1999) on the concept of spatial planning. The methodological procedures were an adaptation of the Knieling; Othengrafen (2009a, 2009b) proposal, which states that, for the understanding of different planning cultures, it is necessary to characterize the "local culture", in the case related to the tourism sector. The working hypothesis was confirmed, as it was found that tourism was inserted in MRs from different ideological conceptions about that, according to actors, political and economic realities and local interests, planned and institutionalized the activity in their respective territories from different perspectives.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates the construction of regional identities from the infancy representations verified in Contos gauchescos and Lendas do Sul, by João Simões Lopes Neto. For that, there have been discussions about the relations between adult and infantile universes, the roles of child character, the ways to refer and characterize the child, as well as the expected and possible trajectories in the narrative. In this manner, this study demonstrates the predominant constitution of the infantile individual as an heir of a socio-cultural tradition, knowing that such identifying reference inhibits the renewal of the social conception of infancy in the shown society. Therefore, an approach to the literary text is shaped supported by History and Anthropology, contributing to an interdisciplinary perspective on regionality matters, within the ambit of cultural studies.

Abdullah, Yusfida Ayu Binti. "The benchmarking method and realistic evaluation as tools for the assessment of urban regeneration programmes : the case of regional parks." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2012. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/8893/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the fact that urban regeneration has been practiced for more than 40 years, there is still a lack of rigorous research on what constitutes best practice in evaluating urban regeneration interventions. It can be argued that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, evaluations were mostly focused on assessing the feasibility of projects, while in the mid 1980s evaluations were mostly conducted to examine the outcomes of projects or programmes instead of their effectiveness. It was only after the late 1980s that programme evaluations were carried out to examine the effectiveness of a programme. However, in spite of this development, such assessments were still considered inadequate. In this research, for example, it was soon discovered that the evaluation of urban regeneration initiatives through a regional park programme was almost entirely performed in isolation without any attempt to compare them with other similar initiatives. The practice of a regional park programme in delivering urban regeneration initiatives is seen as an important programme in the UK given that it promotes a large area within a high urban population location. Additionally, a regional park provides the opportunities for recreational and leisure purposes especially for the locals and the region therefore plays a vital role as a visitor destination. Hence, in order to serve its purpose completely, the performance of this intervention is essential. The essence of this research therefore seeks to address the gaps and to inject a comparative dimension and find the appropriate tools to measure the performance of urban regeneration initiatives in contrast to the current standard evaluation procedures. The research has been designed with the aim of seeking practical and effective ways of applying the benchmarking method and realistic evaluation as a combined assessment tool in evaluating the performance of such initiatives. For this reason, the research focuses on the functioning of the urban regeneration schemes delivered through regional park programmes in the UK. In relation to this, a decision was taken to ‘benchmark’ the Mersey Waterfront Regional Park against the Lee Valley Regional Park and to examine both case studies by means of ‘realistic evaluation’. The rationale for choosing these particular regional parks was made based on the parks’ background. Both regional park programmes have placed emphasis on regeneration of their respective areas. The idea of this comparative exercise is therefore to explore the differences between the Mersey Waterfront and the Lee Valley in terms of programme implementation, project delivery, mechanisms for efficiency, outcomes of programme, the institutional arrangement, the key success factors and the key learning points. These areas of research were therefore justified for the purpose of measuring the performance of a regional park thus teasing out the practicality and potential of both evaluation methods. The end-result of this research discovered that there were various mechanisms affecting the performance of a regional park. Additionally, it was discovered that programme outcomes are influenced by programme settings and delivery mechanisms. The findings also reveal the key lessons to programme performance and the variations of work processes. Nevertheless, the most significant result is the practicality and benefits of using the benchmarking method and realistic evaluation as a combined assessment tool in examining urban regeneration initiatives delivered through regional parks.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the success of recently revegetated roadsides in Tucson, Arizona. The primary objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate a sample of revegetated roadsides by assessing site condition and comparing existing vegetation to the original seed mix; and (2) develop recommendations for appropriate revegetation practices for use in Tucson. Density data were collected at 20 locations using belt transects to derive species information such as origin, vegetative life-form, and invasiveness. Results indicated that the study sites had greater proportions of plant material not specified in the original construction documents than specified plant material. Of the specified species, creosote bush, desert senna, and triangle-leaf bursage had the highest rates of establishment while brittlebush, globemallow, shrubby buckwheat, and fourwing saltbush provided the most vegetative cover. Several non-specified species exhibited successful establishment on many study sites, while some species rarely or never appeared in the study area despite frequent specification.

Abstract:
The present dissertation has as its main objective, to analyze elements of interculturality in the organizational context from the insertion of Haitian workers, in different organizations of Pato Branco - PR. For that, it was made a research which was exploratory, descriptive and with a qualitative approach. The sample of the study was composed by 11 interviewees who were bonded to organizations of diverse segments that hired Haitian workers. The first stage of data collection was carried out through official documents and reports available by agencies such as Ministry of Labor, Federal Police, Migration Observatory. Subsequently, interviews and focus group were conducted, using a semi-structured script with open questions. For the qualitative analysis of the data, the content analysis method was used (BARDIN, 2016). The categories of analysis defined in the first place were: Exchanges between different cultures; interaction between cultures, alterity, difference and identity. The results from the analytical categories show that in relation to the exchanges between cultures, the organizational environment is impermeable, that is, the national culture is predominant. Regarding the interaction between cultures, the results evidenced for the existence of a linguistic barrier reflecting in the work performance, segregation, as well as in the difficulty of interaction. Still, there is no mobilization to stimulate interaction that encourage the proximity between natives and migrants. In relation to alterity, the absence was verified, that is, there are no practices that contemplate the appreciation of the existing differences. The pay and technical skills gap also proved to be a barrier to growth and professional recognition. In the difference category, it was identified that communication is a challenge in intercultural management, because it is difficult to establish dialogues, due to lack of knowledge of the Portuguese language. The findings about identity reveal that institutional discourses prioritize democratic relations, to which all have equal opportunities and rights, however, these actions do not occur in practice. It is concluded that organizations need to invest in the preparation of teams that accommodate migrant workers, especially in terms of policies and communication practices, once it was noticed the distance caused by language limitations. It is necessary to improve the reading of the organizational scenario, as well as overcoming existing prejudices in organizational cultures and ethnocentric ways of perceiving the relationships between work and people. Thus, it is important to develop policies and strategies that enable actions for the effective integration of the migrant worker, and the promotion of cultural interaction.

Abstract:
Distance from the centres of world art and from national hubs of creative practice provides both opportunities and constraints for Western Australian visual artists. Informed but isolated, they have learned to direct the lens shaped by received ideas onto the extraordinary natural environment they inhabit. Regional perspectives influence this act of re-focusing, which is inflected by local knowledge and personal experience in a process of reinvention and re-imagination that has escalated since the Second World War.The objective of this PhD by supplication is to situate my practice as an art historian, critic and curator within the broader context of Australian visual culture and to examine how the process of assimilation, described by George Seddon as taking 'imaginative possession', has contributed to our understanding of local identity within the wider framework of a national identity. In my writing and through my activity as a curator of exhibitions over the past two decades, I have identified the importance of local conditions in generating a critical, regional practice and I have shown how imported ideas have been absorbed, modified and accommodated within the work of the State’s leading artists to create a vibrant sense of regional identity that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of a wider and more comprehensive view of cultural practice in Australia.

Cameron, James J. "Culture and change in the Northwest Territories : implications for community infrastructure planning." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24491.

Full text
Abstract:
Water and sanitation services play an important role in protecting public health and facilitating community growth. However, the choice of technology has significant implications for the social, economic and political development and autonomy of the community. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the objectives, process and content of planning water and sanitation services in communities in the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.). Relationships, issues and the decision making process are examined at the regional, local and infrastructure levels. Objectives for water and sanitation services are investigated to evaluate the link between knowledge and actions. Technical, economic and planning considerations are examined in the evaluation of policies and systems. Examination of objectives reveals that knowledge of relationships is insufficient to objectively establish a level of service policy or to select technology. Examination of water and sanitation planning in Native communities indicates that the N.W.T. Government establishes the objectives and criteria, conducts the planning studies, and is ultimately responsible for selecting, installing and operating the systems. Infrastructure planning is narrowly focused on the technical and economic considerations in the selection of technology. The values and perceptions of the Native people which the systems are meant to serve are neglected or downgraded. Examination of water and sanitation alternatives indicates that major factors in the evaluation of technology are water consumption, housing type, population, local employment opportunities, and self-reliance. Trucked water delivery and sewage pump out systems are an intermediate technology between rudimentary self-haul and sophisticated piped systems. Trucked systems provide high levels of service, flexibility and local employment and they facilitate local administrative, financial, political and physical control over community infrastructure. This thesis recommends that the N.W.T. Government devolve the resources, responsibility and authority for planning and managing water and sanitation services to the community level. The community should be the controller and the client in a planning process which emphasizes social learning and community development. The primary role of the N.W.T. Government should be to assist the people in assessing the conditions of their lives and community so that they can plan and alter these conditions for the better.
