Abstract:
Museums and galleries in the UK increasingly engage with educational and social concerns; this article refers to research to evaluate two such initiatives. Evaluation of the Museum and Gallery Education Programme Phase 2, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, ends in August 2004. The research partnership to evaluate the ‘En-vision’ pilot action research programme, established by Engage (the national association for gallery education) with support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Carnegie UK Trust and three Arts Council regional offices, will complete in 2005. The article explores some key methodological issues relating to evaluation in this developing field. The conclusions are not necessarily endorsed by these sponsors; they are the views of the authors alone.

Abstract:
Three museums of the art of the Pacific and the Far East are described in the paper: Singapore National Gallery, Australian Art Gallery of South Wales in Sydney, and New Zealand’s Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. The institutions have a lot in common: they are all housed in Neo-Classical buildings, raised in the colonial times, and have recently been extended, modernized, as well as adjusted to fulfill new tasks. Apart from displaying Western art, each of them focuses on promoting the art of the native peoples: the Malay, Aborigines, and the Maori. Having been created already in the colonial period as a branch of British culture, they have been transformed into open multicultural institutions which combine the main trends in international museology: infrastructure modernization, collection digitizing, putting up big temporary exhibitions, opening to young people and different social groups, featuring local phenomena, characteristic of the Pacific Region. The museums’ political and social functions cannot be overestimated; their ambition is to become culturally active institutions on a global scale, as well as tools serving to establish a new type of regional identity of postcolonial multicultural character.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the last decade of exposition and exhibition activity of the Primorye State Art Gallery. The focus is on art projects that have become the result of increasingly strong inter-Museum contacts: “guest”, exchange and joint exhibitions. They are born as a result of searches for interested partners and sponsors, agreements with the heads of various institutions at forums and seminars. The patronage of Central museums is of great importance: the State Hermitage Museum, the state Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and others. The Primorye State Art Gallery organizes international exhibitions in order to promote Far Eastern fine art in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, to open new names for these territories in the artistic sphere of the region and the district. The experience of the the Primorye State Art Gallery can be useful for museum workers in the Far Eastern and Siberian regions, and the information obtained can become an incentive for establishing new inter-museum contacts. The Primorye State Art Gallery is a relatively young museum formed in 1966 on the basis of the art collection of the Primorsky Regional Museum of Local Lore (now the Museum of the History of the Far East named after V. K. Arsenyev). Over five and a half decades, the gallery's funds have grown immeasurably, and it has become a methodological center for art museums in the Far East: the State Hermitage Museum has held six master classes on restoration and conservation of works of art in the gallery, and specialists from the State Russian Museum have been conducting scientific and practical seminars for the Far Eastern Federal district in recent years here.

Abstract:
In this paper – given as a lecture at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the summer of 2003 – I survey the remarkable renaissance of museums – national and regional, public and private – in Britain in recent years, largely made possible with the financial support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. I look in detail at four non-national museum projects of particular interest: the Horniman Museum in South London, a remarkable and idiosyncratic collection of anthropological, natural history and musical material which has recently been re-housed and redisplayed; secondly, the nearby Dulwich Picture Gallery, famous for its 17th- and 18th-century Old Master paintings, a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture by Sir John Soane, which has been restored, and modern museum services provided. The third is the New Art Gallery, Walsall, where the Garman Ryan collection of early 20th-century painting and sculpture form the centrepiece of a new building with fine galleries and the forum is the Manchester Art Gallery, where the former City Art Gallery and the Athenaeum have been combined in a single building in which to display the city's rich art collections. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, of which I am Director, is the most important museum of art and archaeology in England outside London and the greatest University Museum in the world. Its astonishingly rich collections are introduced and the transformational plan for the museum is described. In July 2005 the Heritage Lottery Fund announced a grant of £15 million and the renovation of the Museum is now underway.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay examines the transformation of the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) into a global art histories museum. An analysis of the new Christian Art Gallery and its objects that date from the eighth through the twentieth century illuminates the ways in which the ACM engages with global art histories in a permanent gallery and not only through special exhibitions. This essay begins with a history of the ACM and its transition from a museum for the “ancestral cultures of Singapore” to one with a new mission focusing on multicultural Singapore and its connections to the wider world. Hence, taking a thematic approach, the ACM's new galleries question how museums generally display objects along national lines or regional boundaries. This essay also brings attention to the multiple mediums and functions of Christian art from both the geographical locations that usually are associated with Asian art and also from cultures that are rarely taught or exhibited, such as Timor-Leste, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. While showcasing the different moments that Christianity came to Asia, the museum also emphasizes the agencies of Asian artistic practitioners in those global encounters. Although appreciative of the ways in which the ACM's Christian Art Gallery reveal the various tensions within global art histories and break down hegemonic constructions of Christian art from Asia, this essay also offers a critique. Highlighting this unusual engagement with Christian art by an Asian art museum, the new gallery reveals that museums and exhibitions can add to the conversations on global art histories.

Abstract:
Abstract:Species interactions have been recently depicted as networks, in which each species is connected to one or more other species in binary interaction matrices. Forty networks of epiphytic orchid and host tree species were assessed in Brazilian gallery forests. The nestedness of the networks was estimated with the NODF index and the significance was tested with null models. The phylogenetic structure of the network was also assessed, by searching for phylogenetic signals in the number of interactions and in the similarity of interacting species. In total, 105 orchid species and 132 host tree species were sampled. A nested pattern in all orchid–host tree networks was found. However, phylogenetic signals were not observed. The results support that the host specificity of orchids is small and most of the interactions occur among generalist orchids and generalist host trees. While the concept of species-specificity can thus be rejected, the extreme alternative – that interacting orchids and host trees are not a random subset of the regional species pool – can be dismissed as well. However, factors other than phylogenetic history may structure interaction networks of epiphytic orchids and host trees.

Harley, James John, and james@jamesharley net au. "Online collaboration in the Victorian Regional Gallery Network." RMIT University. Property Construction and Project Management, 2005. http://adt.lib.rmit.edu.au/adt/public/adt-VIT20090714.134529.

Full text
Abstract:
The research seeks to identify the opportunities online collaboration may deliver to the Victorian Regional Gallery Network (VRGN). The research further seeks to identify the Commonwealth and Victorian State Government policy context that contributes to realising these opportunities and the type of eBusiness models that could be applied to the online environment of the Victorian Regional Gallery Network. The problem statement of the research argues that in order for the Victorian Regional Gallery Network (VRGN) to remain sustainable in the long term, it must develop collaborations within and external to the gallery sector to deliver value adding solutions for income generation and to cultural product, while seeking new business opportunities offered by the use of Information Technology and the Internet. The range of products offered by the galleries and their geographical distribution encourages collaborations to be undertaken, and in doing so, serves the customers of the VRGN who are increasingly becoming users of the Internet and who are expecting content online. Failing to consider the changing factors that online technologies present for conducting business and communicating common issues across the sector as a whole, puts the VRGN at risk of becoming redundant to its consumers (audience/customers), and a liability to its stakeholders. The major research question is as follows: How can the Victorian Regional Gallery Network (VRGN), as a provider in the cultural and entertainment sector, deliver cultural product to its audiences (customers) through the use and application of collaborative online networks and their related e-business technologies? The research seeks to address this question by investigating the 14 regional galleries that comprise the Victorian Regional Gallery Network, by reviewing their operations and relationships with their stakeholders, and by suggesting a variety of electronic business models that may assist in engaging in collaborative online networks. The scope of the research has three broad objectives: 1. the analysis of the role, function and activity of the Victorian Government in supporting collaborative online networks 2. the identification of an appropriate collaboration model that uses eBusiness and that can be applied to the VRGN 3. the analysis of the typical operating environment of the VRGN and the minimum requirements that will enable the implementation of a collaborative online network At the heart of the research therefore is an understanding of the factors that contribute to a collaborative online network, so that the galleries and the VRGN can efficiently and competitively conduct business and communicate common issues amongst its members. The case study design was selected, as the researcher systematically gathered in-depth information on a single entity, i.e., the VRGN. The methodology deployed in the research needed to effectively gather and collect relevant information from a variety of sources within the VRGN and hence two main approaches were utilised. The first was a questionnaire using the Likert and Dichotomous scale to collect data regarding the operations of the gallery, and the second included a series of interviews which were developed to address specific questions to the key staff within the main target groups of the research. The conclusions that can be drawn out of the combined research include: i. The use of internet technology by the VRGN does not appear to be limited by technical issues. This provides a technological foundation on which to develop possible I.T. and collaborative online solutions for the VRGN ii. The technology required to develop collaboration in the first instance is not a barrier to implementation as it is common technology iii. Knowledge of the characteristics of collaboration including understanding the dynamics of trust, communication, equality, strategic alliances, knowledge distribution, negotiations and incentives are essential if it is to effectively and productively occur in the gallery network. The findings of the research indicate that collaboration currently occurs in the galleries, but it is also hampered by a culture that can sometimes work against the sector as a whole. The creation of strategic alliances amongst the galleries has also been found to be successful, but the advantages of these alliances are yet to be realised or tested across the VRGN iv. A Collaborative Online Network model has been proposed which may enable the gallery sector to share information, encourage communication, coordinate training and professional development opportunities and develop sector-wide research and development projects. The development of the collaborative online network would also assist in addressing the core issue of the research question concerning the provision of cultural product to state audiences through an online environment, and providing incentives to reduce cost and share resources v. The eBusiness model that will assist the VRGN in remaining competitive and active could use the Online Sales model, and will have the opportunity to exploit vertical aggregation of the Victorian arts industry to develop a portal or 'vortal' where the VRGN and its products and services can be marketed on a singular basis to the internet audience. The Online Sales Model also assists in developing a revenue stream for the galleries which may assist in its long term sustainability

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to describe thoroughly the way Czech museums of art are using the principles of marketing communications nowadays. Theoretical part of the thesis presents brief history of modern museums worldwide as well as in the Czech Republic (with special stress on the network of regional galleries being founded in the second half of the 20th century. It also presents bases of museum marketing and the elements of integrated marketing concept applied on galleries. Terms of branding and fundraising are mentioned as well. The research part of the thesis contains the results of questionnaire survey among 10 representatives of Czech regional galleries. Each of the included museums of art is introduced with emphasis on their ways of using marketing communications principles. Their visual identities are also described and media monitoring analysis is added to all of them. We can say that the principles of marketing communications are anchored among Czech galleries; however they struggle with the lack of finance needed to concentrate more on such activities.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuraminidase (NA) is one of two major antigens on the surface of influenza A viruses. It is comprised of a single N-terminal transmembrane domain (TMD), a stalk domain, and a C-terminal enzymatic head domain that cleaves sialic acid, most notably to release new particles from the host cell surface. NA is only enzymatically active as a homo-tetramer. However, it is not known which properties facilitate the oligomerization of NA during assembly. Our results show that, apart from anchoring the protein to the membrane, the NA TMD also contributes to the assembly process by keeping the stalk in a tetrameric conformation. The ability of the TMD to oligomerize is shown to be dependent on its amphiphilic characteristics that was largely conserved across the nine NA subtypes (N1-N9). Over time the NA TMDs in human H1N1 viruses were found to have become more amphiphilic, which correlated with stronger oligomerization. An old H1N1 virus with a more recent N1 TMD had impaired growth, but readily acquired compensatory mutations in the TMD to restore growth, by reverting the TMD oligomerization strength back to that of the old TMD, demonstrating a biological role of the TMD in folding and assembly. NA and the other viral proteins are spatially and temporally coordinated to achieve optimal viral production. By using a co-transfection analysis, the high AU-content in the NA and HA ER-targeting sequence coding regions (for NA TMD as well as the HA signal sequence) were found to inhibit their expression. The inhibition was alleviated by the early expressed influenza RNA-binding protein NS1, which promoted translation and showed enriched foci at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). NS1, which expresses early during infection, is therefore likely the regulator of NA and HA to prevent premature expression. These results show that the NA TMD is under substantial selection pressure at both the nucleotide and amino acid level to accommodate its roles in ER-targeting, protein folding, and post-transcriptional regulation.

Rasal, Sneha. "Reconnecting The City With The Riverfront, To Revitalize The Socio-Economic Conditions Of Springfield, Ma." 2012. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/795.

Full text
Abstract:
The City of Springfield, Massachusetts is one of the largest cities in western Massachusetts, and was established on the Connecticut River for trading and as a fur-collecting post. In 18th and early 19th century, it experienced an industrial boom and became a regional financial center. Springfield became a major railroad center and grew to become the regional center for banking, finance, and courts. However, in mid-19th century Springfield suffered due to the flooding of the Connecticut River and the disinvestment in industry. These resulted in an urban sprawl as people started moving away from heart of the city. Now, once again, the city is trying to revitalize its downtown and neighboring areas to attract people by improving different types of social and cultural amenities. In this thesis, the author studies the relation of the city with its natural asset ‘The Connecticut Riverfront’ which can be a great place to attract people towards the heart of the city. The author has also researched the various reasons causing this natural asset to be underutilized for several years. In addition, the author also explores the possibilities of connecting the Springfield downtown to the riverfront, providing safe and undisturbed access mainly to pedestrians, physically challenged people, and bike riders. Research shows that the existing transportation paths are the major barriers discouraging people from reaching the riverfront. In order to overcome this problem, a design solution is proposed including a safe, pedestrian-friendly link from the downtown area to the riverfront mitigating all the transportation paths such as highway, high speed traffic roads, and railway tracks. The proposed link will give encouragement to local artist and will also aim to boost local businesses by providing sites for museums, exhibitions, art galleries, food courts, and retail shops. This structure will not only improve the accessibility but it will also provide public open spaces where people can gather for various activities and can also enjoy the scenic view of the riverfront. In Addition, local people can also enjoy the water viewing restaurant and bar overlooking Connecticut River. Lastly, this connecting link lays the foundation for further development of the riverfront area due to increased accessibility to this asset.

Abstract:
This paper presents a new method for person authentication that relies on the fusion of two biometric authentication methods based, respectively, on ocular deep features and facial deep features. In our work, the deep features are extracted from the regions of interest by using a very deep CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). Another interesting aspect of our work is that, instead of using directly the deep features as input for the authentication methods, we use the difference between the probe and gallery deep features. So, our method adopts a pairwise strategy. Support Vector Machine classifiers are trained separately for each approach. The fusion of the ocular and the facial based methods are carried out in the score level. The proposed method was assessed with a facial database taken under uncontrolled environment and reached good results. Besides, the fusion strategy proposed in this work showed better results than the results obtained by each individual method.
