This investigation proposes the use of a three-pronged approach to evaluating building envelopes for low-rise affordable housing in urban contexts: construction cost estimating, building performance modeling, and cradle to grave life cycle assessment. Two climate regions were investigated: hot-humid and hot-dry, in two large urban cities: Phoenix and Miami. The envelope systems compared were conventional for the practice area versus best practice and high r-value systems. The results demonstrate that the application of the three-pronged method yields data architects can use to improve energy performance, reduce costs and limit negative environmental impacts.

Erkilic, Mualla. "On reading architecture : some criteria for evaluating the theory of regionalism." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/19725.

Full text
Abstract:
Popular ideas advocated in architectural texts often cause terminological and conceptual confusions for architects and mislead them through their polemical language. In this thesis a current architectural theory concerned with Regionalism that has gained strength from the dissatisfaction with the international nature of contemporary architecture is subjected to a critical examination in order to evaluate its status and validity in the field of architecture. The thesis attempts to analyse a variety of concepts embraced by the broad notion of Regionalism and further explore related items such as Regionality and Universality in works of architecture, not with a view to justify the theory of Regionalism, but rather to demystify and evaluate critically their meanings and significance in architecture at a fundamental level that transcends usual discussions of them. Through an examination of this theory, from both a historical and contemporary perpective, regionalism, in architecture, can be regarded as a specious theory where diverse ideologies and theories, are grouped under a convenient name in an attempt to achieve legitimacy. It consists of imaginary areas of conflicts, resulting from false oppositions between, for example, Regional and Universal and the solutions which are being proposed - to overcome these conflicts - are consequently superficial. It is posited, however, as a critical, dialectical, cultural theory; as such it hinders even when it seems to contribute to the architectural discourse. Despite its sophistry, the problem of Regionalism is epistemological relating to some misunderstandings that obscure fundamental issues in reading and understanding of cultural works, i.e. architecture, where ideas (regional), or the purpose and means, of architecture are confused due to formalist thinking and a restrictive perception of culture.

Abstract:
This research began with an exploration of the phenomenon of cultural conflict and fusion in the process of architectural modernization in Taiwan. It will examine the impact of modern and contemporary theories on the practice of architecture of the island. It will then seek out the essence of Chinese classical architecture in order to develop an approach for the development of the future Chinese/Taiwanese architecture. In addition, the findings of the study could serve as a reference for scholars who would pursue historical and theoretical studies of in the subject, or for architects who are seeking design concepts to enhance their projects. The study utilizes an interpretive-historical methodology. It emphasizes that researchers should investigate social phenomena within broader and more complex contexts of what to uncover the underlying cultural factors. To highlight their significance, the author will pursue a hypothetic project to examine and demonstrate the meaningfulness and applicability of the concepts learned from the research. Efforts were made to discover ways in which Taiwanese and Chinese architectural culture can deal with foreign influences, such that it will be able to enjoy the benefits of modernization while maintaining its unique character and identity. Moreover, it will attempt to uncover ways in which Chinese architecture can in fact influence the global contemporary architectural culture. Finally, it is hoped that this work will produce a useful reference for students, scholars and architects who wish to develop design projects that reflect and celebrate regional cultures.

Agarez, R. M. C. "Regionalism, modernism and vernacular tradition in the architecture of Algarve, Portugal, 1925-1965." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1383808/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at the contribution of real and constructed local traditions to modern building practices and discourses in a specific region, focusing on the case of Algarve, southern Portugal, between 1925 and 1965. By shifting the main research focus from the centre to the region, and by placing a strong emphasis on fieldwork and previously overlooked sources (the archives of provincial bodies, municipalities and architects), the thesis scrutinises canonical accounts of the interaction of regionalism with modernism. It examines how architectural ‘regionalism’, often discussed at a central level through the work of acknowledged metropolitan architects, was interpreted by local practices in everyday building activity. Was there a real local concern with vernacular traditions, or was this essentially a construct of educated metropolitan circles, both at the time and retrospectively? Circuits and agents of influence and dissemination are traced, the careers of locally relevant designers come to light, and a more comprehensive view of architectural production is offered. Departing from conventional narratives that present pre-war regionalism in Portugal as a stereotype-driven, one-way central construct, the creation of a regional built identity for Algarve emerges here as the result of combined local, regional and central agencies, mediated both through concrete building practice and discourses outside architecture. Post-war regionalism appears as more than a sophisticated re-appropriation of vernacular features by cultured architects to overcome the shortcomings of both modernist orthodoxy and official stylistic conservatism: the thesis shows how Algarve’s traditional features allowed modernism to be pragmatically restyled as locally sensitive and keep its fundamentals unquestioned; and the architects’ authority to be reasserted where non-architects dominated. Tradition became the key to architecture’s future. Regionalism, a consistent undercurrent of twentieth-century architecture, resurfaced and was morphed by modernism, with mutual benefit. In Algarve, vernacular tradition and regional agency appear as not mere footnotes in the narrative of modernism, but as part of its main text.

This thesis examines the notion of regional identity and connection to place as a means for developing countries to use their cultural heritage, traditional construction methods, and everyday life patterns to create a built environment appropriate for contemporary needs. Regional identity expressed through architectural form not only establishes a connection between people and the space they inhabit but also contributes to conserving the natural environment and strengthening people’s attachment to place. To support this claim, the thesis focuses on two design thinkers who have examined placemaking from a regional perspective: Architectural theorist Kenneth Frampton and his theory of critical regionalism (Frampton 1983, 1987); and architectural theorist William J.R. Curtis and his theory of authentic regionalism (1986). Using criteria derived from Frampton’s and Curtis’s theories, this thesis analyses two Mexico City houses designed by Mexican architect Luis Barragan: his home and studio, built in 1947; and the Eduardo Prieto Lopez house, built in 1950. Using contrasting criteria from Frampton and Curtis, I examine these two houses' relative success in evoking a sense of regional identity. I argue that my analysis of the two houses, first, offers possibilities for clarifying Curtis´s and Frampton’s understandings of good regional architecture; and second, indicates how local tradition might be adequately integrated with global modernity, while at the same time providing a unique sense of place.

Abstract:
The research draws and analyzes the architectural works that marked the cultural modernization of State of Mato Grosso, in the light of its history and geographical characteristics. The central question relates to cases of confront between old and new, foreign and local, erudite and popular languages, symptoms of a phenomenon under the concept of conflictual modernization, process that hit Mato Grosso late 1950s and persist nowadays. As these antagonisms set deep roots in the past, the study of its impact on architecture must be evaluated in a long-term history. This background goes back to 1914, when the railroad and the telegraph connected the former State of Mato Grosso to the rest of the country, although the emphasis is on the period of contrasts, still in force, announced by the construction of the modern Palácio Alencastro (1959) in the historical core of the capital Cuiabá. While focused on works constructed within the current boundaries of the State, this study outlines architecture situated in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, emancipated in 1977, to better distinguish the production of the remaining territory. Erudite works is in the foreground to highlight its presence on renovating the building practices popular and traditional fabric of local towns. The field survey demanded travels to 50 towns spread over six regions of Mato Grosso, aiming identify and acknowledge local production, and interviewing the professionals responsible for their design, implementation or conservation. About 40 works were selected as case studies, due to the way they represent particular and significant answers to the challenges generated by the advance of capitalist borders toward the Amazon, adapting formal and technical innovations to the specific conditions of the territory of Mato Grosso. The analysis of these works points to the possibility of reconciling the antithetical categories that have polarized the Mato Grosso\'s architectural panorama. The opening to external references and to the international debate did not create indifferent works to the local landscape or incompatible with the pre-existing situations. Rather, the works that have modernized the architectural culture of Mato Grosso open up new forms of dialogue with its heritage and environment.

Abstract:
A significant theoretical change in the history of dwelling in Kerala has caused the current dwelling practices to be less responsive to its ecological existence. This research investigated the evolution of dwellings in Kerala as changing human ecological relationships, in the hope of developing a holistic model that can represent the complex process of dwelling. The human ecological model that is proposed in this research throws light on the continuation of ancient architectural theory in Kerala and is intended to motivate relevant professionals such as architects, planners and builders to develop a holistic and environmentally aware approach in their practice.

This research addresses the relationship between modern -understood as revisiting aspects inherent in modern architecture and taken as reference projectual - and regional - adopted as the position of knowledge and interpretation of characteristics of place and external references relevant to the local situation - in architectural production belenense between 1979 and 2007 (considering how to cut the territorial area of Belém, including, besides the metropolitan region of Belém (RMB), the adjacent municipality of Barcarena); investigating how the articulation of these guidelines has contributed to the creation of a segment of contemporary architecture belenense as a result of the review and/or reinterpretation of modern references and regional aspects. Part of the recognition that we can identify as qualitatively different segment of the local architectural production over the period in question, a set of works that, while guided by a pragmatic approach, relies on the support as a modern design (tradition that remains), while establishing constructive dialogues with expressions adapted to the context, to attend in order to adjust the project to the specific environmental of site, especially climate of order. This paper demonstrates that these attitudes, realized in the works - of which twenty were selected for initial analysis, four of which could be subject to further study - are placed as appropriate and linked to the specific circumstances, (re)discussing the modern legacy and updating the discussions on a regional architecture. Thus, the contemporary architecture belenense not be expressed from a comparison between these two issues, but as a dialogue between the regional thematic - not shaped like style, but as staff - and the propositions modern and contemporary architectural designs revealed in architecture projects, in their integration into the site, in the spatial organization of buildings, their structural systems, in their materials and in their environment comfort solutions.

Abstract:

Regional architecture defines a type of architecture that adapts to the everyday needs of a people and is constructed by the building methods and materials of the region. Regions do not have clear boundaries, but are largely defined by the conditions of nature: climate, soil, topography, vegetation, water. Through this thesis project I have tried to create a regional architecture in Indianapolis, Indiana that embraces the surrounding context, but does not imitate the architecture of the past, through a mixed-use building for everyday life.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the architectural reality of Barcelona between 1949 and 1964, which adapts its modus operandi of the Milanese architectural imaginary, and is characterized by the desire to substantially recover the history -lost with the dictatorship- the connection of the individual with his innermost self, and consciousness of belonging to the Mediterranean context. The vicissitudes of adaptation carried out by the architects of Barcelona, especially the Group R, and while admiring the Milanese counterparts Rogers, Gardella and Albini, leads to the expression of a genre that is specific to this Mediterranean region and only during the analyzed historic period: Mediterranean Critical Regionalism. The concept of Critical Regionalism is understood by Kenneth Frampton, its theoretician, as an attitude that can never be considered a style as its rationale prevents it, is applicable to any gap that belongs to a decentralized context and by that reason can be considered generic . The Mediterranean Critical Regionalism, however, belonging to a particular physical place , determined and unique, takes its strength beyond the critical category. The importance that for this regionalism has the study of context -historical, geographical, cultural and socio- political- as well as the detection of specific and real needs of human beings who inhabit it -Heidegger's being-in-the-place - transforms a concept that could be strictly architectural into something interdisciplinary. The study of architectural thought, of the socio-political analysis, of the topography, the links between the architects of both two cities, and the methodological observation of their works, has allowed to the Mediterranean Critical Regionalism to detect a paradigm shift with respect to the architectural genres that were considered or even imposed until then.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the career of Arthur Baldwinson (1908-1969), a Sydney-based modernist architect. It argues that Baldwinson was a central figure in the development of a modernist domestic architecture in Australia from the late 1930s until the late 1950s through his practice as well as his activist role in the development of the Australian design reform and arts organisations: the Modern Architecture Research Group (MARS); the Designers for Industry Association of Australia (DIAA); and the Contemporary Art Society (CAS). It is further argued that Baldwinson designed and built two of Sydney's first authentically modernist houses before the 1939-45 War and that his subsequent development and refinement of a regional methodology for modernism in Sydney's domestic architecture is at the centre of the later regionalist styles of the late 1950s and early 1960s currently described as the

Abstract:
Active from the late 1930s to the 1980s, Pierre Dufau (1908-1985) is one of the leading performers in the French architecture during the ‘Trente Glorieuses’ period, due to the quantitative importance of his built production. Specialized in office buildings, public buildings and facilities, he was also involved in the field of urban planning by designing the reconstruction plan of the city of Amiens, and thirty years later by being responsible for the conception of the ‘Nouveau Créteil’ masterplan, in Paris suburbs. Pierre Dufau is relatively unnoticed in the historiography of contemporary architecture, similarly to many architects of his generation, although recipients of public work orders, and most of the time recipients of the ‘Prix de Rome’. The details of his production reveal the complexity of a professional career where, motivated by both commercial strategy and conviction, the architect ultimately converted to modernist theses after a youth marked by respect for the lessons of classicism. As a prolific writer but without being a theorist nor a teacher, Pierre Dufau strived to give through his posthumous memoirs a meaning to his professional path. In this thesis, we propose to go beyond the plastic and technical analysis of the buildings to focus on the rationality of their production cycle and the coherence of the discourse that accompanies a work essentially unnoticed in the history of art so far. We also study the temporality of Dufau's critical reception with the support of the inventory of his office’s unpublished archives, most of the time original

Abstract:
Lambayeque is a northern department that is characterized by its ancestral culture. The Sicán civilization developed there, and therefore, inherited a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to develop today. However, there is not an adequate equipment to exhibit and commercialize handicrafts. Also, the deficient distribution and location of centers of artisan sale has caused the devaluation of this activity. On the other hand, the artisans of Lambayeque are affected by the rains of the Niño Costero which has caused the loss of their workshops, work tools and access to raw materials. According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Perú (MINCETUR), 266 artisans were affected in the region .Therefore, the state is developing a containment and investment plan for the recovery of their workplaces. Likewise, in Lambayeque there are 3 993 artisans written in the National Registry of the Artisan this means that the activity is profitable and it is the sustenance of many families. Therefore, this research is based on the study of the markets of artisan production in order to determine the adequate functioning and design, since most of them are spaces that have been adapted for this activity. Jointly applying the principles of Regionalist Architecture for the integration and architectural interpretation of Lambayeque, the development of a cultural market will be achieved.

Rodriguez, Gonzalo. Thesis, Bordeaux 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013BOR15226/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of the current energy crisis, energy consumption and the carbon trace have become a mayor influence in the architectonic conception, the first link in the construction process. Recent constrains associated with international agreements such as the Rio Summit (1992), the Kyoto Protocole and, specifically in France, Grenelle delʼEnvironnement Round Table (2007), have diversified the number of stakeholders in the architectural conception, traditionally reserved to architects. The race to reduce by hal fenergy consumption in buildings (RT 2012) as well as the goal to cut by four greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 (Grenelle de lʼEnvironnement), puts the architectural creative process in jeopardy. Such demanding requirements favor trivial technical solutions and encourage standardization and off shoring of architectural elements. This researchʼs purpose is to place the architectural approach at the center of the sustainable conception. This allows the validation of the performance of a houseʼs shape as an effective response to environmental constrains. For this, we have placed our interest in the vernacular house, usually characterized by simple forms and adapted to their sociocultural and geo-climatic context. This habitat, which has resulted from a long term optimization, is inevitably sustainable. The vernacular habitat is analyzed herein in the search of the motivations that have shaped it. In consequence, geographical and climate circumstances that could have determined the shape of houses have been considered. We claim that from the analysis of visible architectural features it is possible to obtain information on the geo-climatic environment as well as the influence relationships that connect them. These influence relationships are modeled following a qualitative approach supported by a qualitative representation of knowledge. The representation, based upon qualitative functions, enables automatic reasoning, starting from gathered awareness of geo-climatic environment, for establishing corresponding architectural features. Finally, the modeled result both allows the evaluation of the form of new houses and assist the conception of houses adapted to their local context

Fu, Chao-Ching. "Regional heritage and architecture : a critical regionalist approach to a new architecture for Taiwan." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8372.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of modern architecture, which was first introduced to Taiwan by the Japanese when they occupied the island, has destroyed the identity and continuity of traditional Taiwanese architecture. Modern architecture, with its emphasis on materialistic and technological aspects, is fundamentally different from traditional architecture. The former depends on denying what is essential to the latter. However, modern technology is genuinely international and most people in Taiwan seem to want to enjoy its advantages, such as new methods of building construction, which have offered a better technical solution to many problems than traditional architecture could. However, architecture is not merely a technological product, it is also an embodiment of the worldview of the people of a region. The most important question in the contemporary architectural development of Taiwan is, therefore, to see how modern innovations could be embedded in the regional heritage so as to achieve a new architecture within the parameters of modern referents while maintaining a quality relying on nourishment from regional traditions. The thesis is an inquiry into the prospect of developing such a new architecture for Taiwan, which, it is argued, can be achieved by a Critical Regionalist approach. Critical Regionalism is a concept as well as an approach that attempts to evoke a condition of authenticity in which a new architecture can be consciously originated out of the traditional architectural characteristics of a particular region in order to withstand the domination of Modernism. The contents of the thesis are centred on the following themes: differences between traditional and modern architecture; problems of the contemporary architectural development of Taiwan; the development of Post-Modernism, Alexander's Pattern Language, the Phenomenology of Architecture, and Regionalism in architecture; the dialectics of Critical Regionalism; characteristics of traditional Taiwanese architecture; and the discussion of the regional consciousness in contemporary Taiwanese architecture. Today, society in Taiwan is no longer completely traditional although a number of traditions still survive. People live in a society codified according to two different sets of values and beliefs. The problem of how to preserve the valuable aspects of the regional heritage, including regional architecture, in a situation where tradition is in rapid decline is crucial. It is demonstrated in the thesis that Critical Regionalism presents a possibility that an authentic architecture can be developed out of contradictory elements and sources. In the past, most criticisms of modern architectural development were based on either the purely functional aspects or the style of the building which are only parts of architecture. The Critical Regionalist approach enables both architects and critics to emancipate themselves from such narrow interpretations. With the help of this approach, both architects and critics can now look at architecture from a much broader point of view. The thesis aims to show the way towards this new understanding of architecture.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the career of Alsatian architect, Charles-Gustave Stoskopf (1907-2004), who was awarded in the Prix de Rome in 1933. It is based mainly on research in his agency archives. He was professionally active during the “Thirty Glorious Years” in France, starting in 1945 when he was involved in post-war Reconstruction and given responsibility for the rebuilding of villages around Colmar razed to the ground in the conflict. Later, he designed a number of major developments in Alsace and the Paris area. To shed light on his career, we explore the various aspects of the architect’s life, conduct an architectural analysis of a few of his most significant works and, finally, consider the transversality that is a feature of his considerable output. Our study reveals his use of various registers of expression, all of them marked by academic terminology and an Alsatian heritage to which he refers constantly while giving it a new innovative twist. He also succeeded in drawing on various influences, enabling him to respond to unusual commissions during this period of modernisation and strong growth

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a Marine Museum in Callao, based on the potential for spreading the biological and marine culture of Peru. The justification for a marine museum has as its main element the ability of this typology to transmit culture. And through this ability reintegrate a community with its historical past. Creating a link between the users of the community and the city in which it is located, generating a positive social impact within the museum's range of action. However, it is not limited to an act in the cultural-social sphere of the users who receive it. Because, thanks to the scale in which it works and the uses that this typology gathers, it is capable of generating a tourist pole with a positive economic impact for the region in which it is located. The place chosen for the location of the Marine Museum is Callao. Due to 4 factors: its geography at 0 masl, the identity of the Chalaco citizens that relates to marine activities, the tourist potential of Callao and the concentration of activities related to the trade of the sea in Callao. Another important point is the presence of the historic center, which complements the cultural character of the museum, which proposes a future of tourist and cultural regeneration in this sector of Callao.

This dissertation of master degree was presented to Post-Graduation Program in Architecture and Planning at UFRN, Brazil. It evaluates 45 one-family housings in the Metropolitan Area of Recife, whose architects consider them to be in conformity with the recommendations contained in Armando de Holanda's book: A Guide to build in the Brazilian Northeast: Architecture as a pleasant place in the sunny tropics , published in 1976 by UFPE. For a long time, it used to be reference in many Architecture and Planning Schools of the Northern Region of Brazil. The research s methodological procedures are based on the Post- Occupancy Evaluation (P.O.E.) with emphasis on the users' thermal comfort of the houses that make part of the sample. Therefore, it has been done technical analyses of the projects, when possible; interviews with the architects; building s inspections; and form applications to the users. The collected data analysis was based on the project recommendations of Holanda s book, they can be synthesized in the principle of Building Leafy". It can not be affirmed that all the houses present the recommendations contained in the guide, but, in many different ways, they exist, sometimes more intensely and sometimes more shyly. However, it can be noticed that in the 45 projects, that the architects perceived the importance of "Building Leafy" on the climatic reality of the Metropolitan Region of Recife

Abstract:
A study of the importance, elements and techniques of architectural contextualism. Contextual architecture is here defined as architecture that creates relationships with its specific site or its broader physical or visual environment. This study posits the comprehensive definition of architectural contextualism on multiple levels: denotatively, connotatively, historically, philosophically, and in its aspects of critical regionalism. American architects adept at the practice of architectural contextualism during the mid-twentieth century offer principles and techniques. These architects are John Carl Warnecke, E. Fay Jones, and George White and others. This research has yielded the systematic, comprehensive definition of contextualism, a set of metrics which can be used as a basis of design and aid in the evaluation of the degree to which a building or set of buildings and their landscape are contextually congruent.

Abstract:
Organic architecture is often used term especially in connection with the daring and experimental form. The exact definition or division is still missing. The founder of modern organic architecture is to be generally considered as Frank Loyd Wright. He was the man who created organic architecture and also made first definition in the early twentieth century, when formulating new architectural styles. Dissertation deals with insufficiently described problem of organic architecture. The main focus is on contemporary production of residential organic architecture in Central Europe. Especially on the particular realizations in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Austria, Germany and Poland. Beside detail description of European realizations, the dissertation deals also with foundations of organic architecture in U.S.A. and important realizations here. Modern organic architecture primarily originated in the United States of America. The work presents most important contemporary realizations and architects creating resident living organic architecture in other countries around the world in order to complete the overview. The objective of dissertation was describing newest trends in designing buildings for living. Find position of organic architecture and give reasons for it´s increasing popularity, spread and necessity for new development in architecture according to the new trends. Organic architecture is an alternative way of contemporary residential living. It´s popularity is growing in last years in response to the development of modern technologies and materials, the need to protect our natural resources and also to the increasing negatives of globalization and to denial of local traditions and regional specificities. Aspects of organic forms were divided into three main groups according to their main characteristics: form, harmony and sustainable development. Another objective was find location of contemporary organic residential architecture in Czech Republic and abroad. It is rather spread all over the world than concentrated on certain places. Therefore I selected countries that are richer than the others on the occurrence of organic buildings. The objective was also to address architects, specialists, public and especially university teachers of architecture and students themselves. Communication with them was mainly connected with grant project in 2010. The theme of grant project was contemporary organic architecture in residential living. There were lectures about contemporary organic architecture and exhibition on the theme: Contemporary living organic architecture. The publication of the catalog was published under the title: Contemporary organic houses - Europe. I had the opportunity to visit a number of organic family houses abroad. Specifically houses in Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. Results of survey, which was realized by questions to owners and authors of chosen buildings, are included in dissertation. The mail results of dissertation are - make a detail review of organic architecture in residential living - define trends in contemporary organic architecture and residential living - obtain and process answers from owners and authors of chosen buildings within survey - analysis of organic house ( houses) in city planning and landscape - publication of catalogue focused on organic contemporary European houses - article about contemporary organic architecture and residential living will be published in 2012 on archiweb page
