Full textThe research aims to investigate the emerging multinationals' (EMNE) behaviour through their first international acquisition. Indeed, because of the scope and scale of this international phenomenon, the internationalization of these firms portrayed a novelty, a threat, and an opportunity in the worldwide landscape as well. Our study tests empirically the international management theories basically thought for firms from industrialized economies (MNE) according to quantitative methodologies applied on a unique sample of 504 EMNE from SDC platinum database. The results find three EMNE groups influenced by target-country characteristics, international acquisition experience and extensive network. However, these same firms are not influenced by domestic-country characteristics, their domestic acquisition experience and their close network. These results highlight the field both in corroborate some studies and refute others. This research finally clarifies a set of scientific knowledge related to the EMNE phenomenon through an empirical study of the international acquisitions

Full textThe main objective of this study is to expose the underlying causes of success for hightechnology start-ups, in particular those operating under the regime "Jeunes Entreprises Innovantes" (JEI) in the French context. We narrow down the factors to those related to financing and governance. We surveyed 488 technology firms created between 1996 and 1998. We use as a proxy the features of the JEI law enacted in 2004. Technically speaking, our sample is not part of the JEI cohorts so we back tested databases to extract firms meeting the conditions of the law. Wecall this sample the simulated JEI. We retain a two-step approach. To discriminate our sample, we first use survival - firms operating as an ongoing concern - as a proxy for success. Results show that at the end of the period six companies were acquired by a larger company, less than a third of these companies went bankrupt but more than half survived. Second, we have recourse to a technique of automatic classification called taxonomy. To that end, we start assessing economic and financial performances of the companies still alive over the period. This second approach yields two separate groups. Overall, the performances of these firms are at best mixed. Although almost all of the simulated JEI are capable of sustaining themselves financially, only about a quarter of them are profitable. Identifying factors of success or failure factors requires an econometric approach centeredon binomial and multinomial logistic regressions. The most important findings are thefollowing. First, the fact that employees own shares of their firms has a positive influence on performance, except for those backed by venture capital. Second, high levels of debt at the inception impact positively the outcome of the firm. Finally, the results shed a positive light on the controversial payroll tax exemptions. Our models show that they are keys to early success of the simulated JEI. [...]However, these results should be interpreted in the light of evident limitations. We were constrained by the lack of reliable data, having lots of missing values for some of key indicators. We also face a survival bias since the identification of efficient firms can only be applied to existing concerns in our sample. Likewise, we can't reject the hypothesis that the historical context might play a role since the period of our analysis covers the bust of the ICT (Information Technology and Communication) bubble occurring in 2001. Last limitation concerns the conditions of the simulation of our sample. Obviously, the simulated JEI firms had not benefited as much as the real ones from the substantial tax allowances brought up by the legislation. So we consider this study as a first step towards a better understanding of the factors of success of French High Tech Start-ups. [...]

Full textIn this master’s thesis, we develop a statistical method to estimate the lifetime expectancy of clients in the insurance domain. The forecasts are personnalized according to the clients’ own features, the most notable being the fact that they can have any combination of automobile and residential insurance products. Three approaches are compared. The first approach is the simple Markov model which assume homogeneity and stationnarity of the transition probabilities. The other model suggested – which is implemented both by direct computation and by simulation – allows for heterogeneity of the transition probabilities, thus providing forecasts which evolve in time along with the characteristics of the clients. The transitions probabilities are estimated using multinomial logistic regressions.

Full textThis research assesses the impact of contextual, family and individual factors in access to postsecondary education of First Nations and Métis people aged between 18 and 34 years old, living outside First Nations communities in Canada. This research examines also the impact of these factors across the three postsecondary types of school systems of Canada, i.e., “exclusive choice”, “progressive choice” and “multiple choice”. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed on the data of the Aboriginal Peoples Survey of 2012. Three groups of factors totaling 24 indicators were examined in order to answer the research questions. The results of this research show that, while contextual factors, such as the social and academic environment and family factors, such as the high academic level of family’s members are determinant in access to postsecondary education among Aboriginals living outside First Nations communities, the individual factors are the main predictors of this access. Among these main predictors, there are academic performance, dropping out of school and age. In addition, the analysis of moderation effects according to the three postsecondary types of systems present in Canada showed significant differences that can be seen, first, in the explained variance and second, in the difference between the importance of the different groups of factors in each system.
