Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1991.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 112-114).
The primary intention of this thesis is to explore the tectonic qualities of light throughCthe design of a building. In addition to addressing some of the more general questions concerning light raised in the design process, the design attempts to demonstrate how light can define a multiplicity of places and generate the physical architectural order of a building. The investigation of light is conducted through studies with the various physical and spatial components of the building. The primary goal of these explorations with light is to enrich a personal understanding of light in architectural terms for the purpose of design. In addition, the program of a drug rehabilitation center examines how the intangible qualities of light in a building can serve to inspire and contribute to the process of healing physically as well as emotionally. The significance of the program ensures that the studies with light are not just generic and formal, but recognizes that any formal understanding of light must be applied to broader ends in order for it to be meaningful. The thesis itself is organized in five chapters: -- Chapter One introduces the basic questions regarding light which prompted this design investigation. It specifies the intention and the scope of this thesis and discusses the method of the investigation. -- Chapter Two describes the context of the design. It reveals why an urban rehabilitation center was chosen for the design and points out the role of the program in the explorations with light. There is also a description of the site and a discussion of some of the most important advocacies which operated throughout the design process. -- Chapter Three presents the design through plans, sections, and vignettes of the building as a "Journey of Light." -- Chapter Four is a collection of some of the studies conducted during the design process. These studies are grouped under two sections. The first group includes the more analytically oriented studies which are based on observations connected to the city, the site and the room. The second section consists of the qualitative explorations with light and a list of the questions regarding light which these studies attempt to address. The latter group of studies are organized in terms of the volume, wall and frame of the building. -- Chapter Five summarizes the the most important lessons gained from this study and offers an assessment of the value of this investigation.

s achievements of rehabilitation centers are perceived different from the traditional ones. Conventional approach of rehabilitation was aiming at improving functional deficiencies of people with disabilities with the help of medical treatment. Within the last two decades depending upon the increasing in the awareness of idea of inclusivity in society there has been developed a shift from traditional medical based approach to more social based ones where rehabilitation has been perceived as a process to enhance the &

rather than a process of a medical curation of people with diverse disabilities. The new social-based rehabilitation approach refers community based rehabilitation strategy that aims to integrate various sectors of social life for the achievement of an effective rehabilitation while promoting inclusion of people with less or severe disabilities in social life. It is stated in this thesis that the architectural program of a community-based rehabilitation centers can be elaborated with the parameters of Universal Design (UD) which not only responds to the shift in community-based rehabilitation approach while promoting inclusion in the society, but also has a potential to advance spacial formative characteristics of related centers in a more descriptive way. The ideas of equity and participation are the significant parameters of UD that are referred in the thesis in order to elaborate the supportive social services of an architectural program and to investigate spatial characteristics of community-based rehabilitation centers.

A primeira, a abordagem teórica sobre a ambiência do centro histórico e o centro urbano consolidado, arquitetura, habitação, texto, contexto e dialogia.
The consolidated urban centers of the metropolis areas, in general, house loaded buildings symbols and meanings that shape the collective memory and identity of citizens, in addition to express social, economic, political and cultural organizations. These urban centers are home to a growing concentration of trade, services and finance, consolidated infrastructure and ensuring access to public transport, to the detriment of the residential function and / or housing precariousness, in addition to the presence of numerous voids and / or underutilized properties, which have been the target of programs and public intervention projects in recent decades. The dialogical method has led to the understanding and evaluation of architecture in a chronotopic relation text (object of study) with its context, the Ricoeur’s dimensions space-time and articulated with the three dialogical dimensions of human life (esthetics, ethics and science). The City of São Paulo (Brazil), on the managements of 2001-2004 and 2005-2008, through the Residential Leasing Program (PAR), rehabilitated some buildings in the ambience of the historic center for social housing (HIS) and, among these, is Maria Paula building. Rome (Italy), the City since 2000 through Programmi di Recupero Urbano (PRU) reclassified degraded areas and rehabilitated buildings for social housing and, among these, is the Residential San Basilio. Faced with the facts alluded, this research aims to evaluate the programs and public projects of social housing in urban consolidated centers: Residential Leasing Program in São Paulo, Brazil and Programmi di Recupero Urbano in Rome, Italy, through the case studies: Maria Paula building and Residential San Basilio, respectively. Methodology: comprises five stages. The first, theoretical approach to the ambience of the historic center and the consolidated urban center, architecture, housing, text, context and dialogy. The second, the dialogic architecture method, based on philosophical and theoretical background of Bakhtin, Ricoeur and Muntañola which starts by understanding the architectural text, the original construction (setting), the physical deterioration of the building, the rehabilitation project (reprefiguration), the rehabilitated building (reconfiguration) and the social use of the dwelling (re-refiguration). The third, the Programmi di Recupero Urbano (PRU): The building San Basilio in Rome - Italy. The fourth, the Residential Leasing Program (PAR): Building Maria Paula in São Paulo - Brazil. The fifth, comparative analysis of the PAR: Building Maria Paula in São Paulo and the PRU: Building San Basilio, in Rome. Results: contribute to studies on social housing in consolidated urban centers; contribute to studies on dialogic architecture and subsidize, through this study, public programs and projects of social housing in Brazil.

Abstract:
The thesis puts forward the problematic situation in the very urban center of Ankara with an analytical method to investigate the roots of several problems. Building its argument on historical facts, in depth observations, and political, social, and urban analysis, it proposes a rational basis for the rehabilitation of 19 Mayis Sports District, mainly focusing on the means of elevating the physical quality through the capacity of social inclusion concerning the sports activity settings and places in the region. All in all, the basic argument stands on the belief that the spatial basis of the 19 Mayis Sports District and the neighboring urban tissue around it might be re-defined and rehabilitated, if only its historical, political, ideological, and socio-cultural bases are redefined. Therefore, the study searches for rehabilitation of the 19 Mayis Sports District in Ulus, Ankara, by adapting and integrating sports with other cultural collective practices, and defining it as an alternative life-style for citizens. Because the district lays on the second division of Atatü
rk Culture Center Region, a sports culture and its policy should be defined and designed for to amend that division of the region by preparing a principal master plan for the region and for the division.

Abstract:
The project consists of the design of a Pediatric Rehabilitation Center. It is based on a therapeutic architecture that is used in designing a healthcare building by creating wide and open spaces to the gardens thus contributing to the user’s rehabilitation.  It is intended to integrate the therapeutic gardens and natural areas of the project alongside the treatment areas with the objective to provide care for children and young people from an early age in order for them to develop and reintegrate themselves into society adequately. The project's location is in Los Olivos's district in the northern part of Lima due to the high demand of users and the lack of infrastructure in the area to help them.

ABSTRACT: This work is based on recent perceptions about the values of industrial heritage and it is justified as a way of testing the most appropriate methodologies for architectural rehabilitation, giving satisfaction to the real social needs of local communities The Chelas Valley it’s foremost characterized identifying it’s urbanistics, architectural and social needs. It’s also analyzed the state of conservation of the former factory Tinturaria Portugália and what are his limits for an architectural rehabilitation. With the information collected and respective study, a new use was then proposed for the manufacturing unit: an Intergenerational Community Center. In order to meet the social needs of the location, making the community identify itself again with the factory and it’s history. The aim of the architectural rehabilitation intervention was to be as non-intrusive as possible, where care was taken to value its history. To improve the result, it’s also proposed an urban requalification of the nearest surroundings, always emphasizing the building under study. More important than the realization of the main objectives in the project, was the investigation of a suitable methodology for the architectural rehabilitation of old industrial units.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Problem Statement: From a sustainability point of view, hospitals offer their services without taking into consideration their impact on the environment, the interplay between various sectors, key elements of sustainable development and interconnectedness. This study represents an attempt to design a “virtual” green hospital facility that does more with fewer resources. Aims and Objectives: Contribute towards achieving sustainable and better quality healthcare services. To generate evidence and increase our understanding of the sustainability of hospital resource flows. Design a “virtual” green hospital. Research Method: The research approach consists of a comprehensive literature review, mixed with substantiated field research and interviews. The literature review provided an understanding, recommendations and interventions for the virtual project. These can be used to promote greater sustainability through WCRC’s healthcare system, energy efficiency and green hospital buildings. Interviews and questionnaires were used to collect the qualitative data. The interpretive technique was used to analyse the collected data. Consumption statistics of electricity, water and waste were used to collect the quantitative data. It was analysed using the green building rating tool. The rating tool awards points according to incorporated measures, and arrives at a total score after appropriate weighting. The green building rating tool was used to establish the rating of WCRC as it stands and what it could ideally be as a retrofit? The data was presented as demographic information in tables, charts and graphs, drawn from the collected data. Findings: The findings that emerged suggest that: a) green hospital buildings promote greater sustainability than the current modern healthcare hospital buildings at WCRC and retrofitting would promote greater sustainability; b) the majority of WCRC’s current healthcare provision is done in the conventional ‘business as usual approach’; c) the greatest weaknesses of the hospital is its heavy dependence (95% average) on nonrenewable energy sources of fuel, electricity and water; d) procurement isn’t focused in the bio-region; e) sustainability isn’t viewed as the cornerstone to influence policy; and f) the flow of resources gets conducted through socio-economic systems. Conclusion: The current design of the hospital needs to be retrofitted into a green building, which will promote greater sustainability. A higher rated green star building for WCRC would promote greater sustainability. Healthcare provision is done in the conventional ‘business as usual approach’. Therefore the healthcare system faces threats in the immediate future, which include the impact of climate change, over dependency on fossil fuels and increasing urban sprawl. A virtual green hospital is designed to reduce the overall impact of its built environment on human health and the natural environment by: • Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources; • Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity; • Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation. Recommendations: In this sustainability criterion, a paradigm shift is required for WCRC hospital to go green and become sustainable. At a local scale WCRC needs to green the current hospital building by retrofitting. WCRC needs to energy switch from nonrenewables to sustainable renewable resources. Bioregional consumption and procurement needs to be practiced whilst establishing a local health movement to engage suppliers and focus on sustainability.

ABSTRACT: The present investigation happens on the thematic on Project with Light, Colour and Substance in the scope of the architectural rehabilitation considering them as indispensable elements to the architectural thought. The theoretical component happens on the context of the basic concepts, relating to the importance of the architectural rehabilitation in “pombalino” and “gaioleiro” buildings and the necessity to understand and to use the light, colour and substance as basic elements in the influence of the perception of the space. The practical source uses the theoretical framing produced applying them under a proposal of architectural intervention on a building, today vacant, of urban implantation only with entrances unlevelled for three streets, located in the Rua do Alecrim nº22, next to Cais-do-Sodré in Lisbon. The proposal is based on a readjustment program the contemporary use, having promoted the strategies of the architectural rehabilitation setting in the common and relevant characteristics featured on the” gaioleiros” buildings. It is considered, as its program, a multi-functional Center of Arts integrating multiple services directed for the culture and arts aimed to the young professionals, both national and foreigners, allowing the exchange of ideas, information and, at the same time, the integration of different cultures. For the center of arts work spaces are considered, temporary residences and multipurpose rooms, valuing the architectural and urban potentialities of the building. Interaction spaces are also considered for the direct interaction of the resident and visiting population such as a cafeteria with direct access from Rua do Alecrim, services in work spaces, production and sales in the ground floor with direct access with the streets Rua Nova do Carvalho and São Paulo, as well as the maintenance of iconic spaces from the Lisbon night as the Jamaica Bar and the Musci Box as possible exhibition areas. During the development of this study, the position of the architect in the process of architectural rehabilitation will be analyzed, taking the right decisions regarding colors and materials preserving the characteristic cultural and historical values needed for the identity of the building.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT:This project aims to give greater visibility to a very special aspect of Architecture, the Military one, bringing emphasis to its patrimonial value and the need to preserve and maintain it. In this specific thesis, the History of buildings of this nature will be analysed, focusing on the Alpena Military Battery, considering the fact that this was the biggest battery of the Portuguese coast and, consequently, of the defensive system of the Entrenched Field of Lisbon. Its strategic importance will be highlighted as a defense mechanism of the Portuguese Atlantic coast and as an integral part of that defensive system which, together with the Raposeira Military Batteries, formed an important military defense complex of the coast from attacks from the south. The possibility of hosting a Coastal Artillery Interpretation Center (CAIC) will be offered to the Alpena Military Battery with the aim of, after its restoration, gaining a new experience as an exhibition and debate center for this vast field of disciplinary knowledge. The improvement of the embankment regarding the ground floor, corresponding to the lowest level of the project, will be aimed at, making it a greener “ditch” with a more inviting pedestrian circulation. The proposal is extended to the surroundings, so we use the design of new footpaths that will lead us to several key points of view for the observation of Architecture and Landscape.

Abstract:
This work has as main purpose of study the theme of rehabilitation and revitalization of urban space and architectural buildings inserted in historical city centers. To achieve these objectives is presented, based on a broad theoretical framework, the following and descrived analysis of a case study about the intervention project of rehabilitation and recovery by upgrading of the historic city center of Santa Maria da Feira. Recover, rehabilitate or redevelop the historic city always involves transforming the existing one. However these interventions and transformations require not only ever-present awareness and understanding of the magnitude but also responsibility about how it works throughout this process. In fact, it’s obvious we can’t change properly what we don’t know, and the results are compromised if we don’t use the most appropriated design tools. In this way, through a methodology that supports a theoretical exploration initial collected from various authors and documentary sources on the subject of rehabilitation and upgrading of historic centres and its sustainability, which will be applied to the case analyzed in the town of Santa Maria da Feira, this work represents a reflection about how to interview in the built heritage but also and mainly in the construction and organization of the landscape of historic city centres. The organization of work is almost chronological in their various subjects or any component theoretical framework, which is the history of the city of Santa Maria da Feira, the transformation of its historic centre for the rehabilitation and upgrading and the future prospects of this process. The aim consist in the main factors involved in urban renewal and architectural intended to be integrated in a historic local, having in mind the local culture, and how these factors can be implemented. It’s fundamental to give directions for the future, even that appear in directions that are contrary to the objectives aimed initially. As it was already defended, the main results it is believed that it was possible to perform an adequate framework of the theme, with the presentation of the evolution of concepts on the rehabilitation of heritage, translated in letters and recommendations, not only architectural but also the urban historic centres, the analysis of the city of Feira are characterized and analyzed in the light of these concepts and recommendations. In a conclusion way, this analysis was intended to draw some conclusions about the concepts and best modes of action in urban spaces, what worked well, but what has not been as successful, and thus determine simple recommendations ways and future solutions.

Abstract:
Inside the Historical Center of Lima there are -still- buildings that were architectural references of the XIX and XX centuries and that are yet standing; however, when asked what future they have, the answers and intuitions are mostly hopeless. In times where there is discussion about the programmed obsolescence of products, objects, buildings, where is the job of the architect with a humanist vocation, his intrinsic ego of perennization through quality? What do we call architectural quality if we continue to use the city as a try and failure blackboard, a city increasingly saturated and needed of public spaces and infrastructure? Is it the carelessness of man, his ingratitude towards history and his lack of appreciation of quality and order (informality) that is sending hundreds of architectural gems from Lima to oblivion? This project has the audacity to challenge time with a futuristic ideal for a real and human user of the present, which shows correspondence to our history through two fundamental concepts: to value forgotten architectural infrastructures of the 20th Century through its adaptation for new contemporary and versatile purposes, and improve the public spaces of the Center of Lima through a new alternative solved in an urban and architectural program.

The subject of the diploma thesis was the elaboration of an architectural study of the renovation and completion of the Secondary school Gemini in Brno on Vaculíkova street. The assignment was the completion of the school and the emergence of new accommodation, restaurant and services. This object is situated in Brno - Lesná. It is a relatively sloping land. The basis of the design was the completion of one school floor and the completion of a new w connected to the existing building. The original school was built parallel to the contour lines, while the completion of the new part of the object is perpendicular to the contour lines. This will create an optically enclosed garden space from Vaculíkova Street. The school's garden remains open to the park towards the Devil's Gorge. On the west side a new building with a restaurant and services is built, which is connected with the original school by a connecting neck. The basis of the design was the completion of one school floor and the completion of a new wing connected to the existing building. The aim of this study is that the Landscape Architect, who is going to make a project to improve the green spaces to be used by people with special needs, applies a methodology of approaching and active intervention. This methodology includes: watching and participation in the activities; interviewing the different users of the space (health professionals, employees, hospitalized patients or outpatients and visitors/relatives), Focus Groups and inquiries to the several groups of users. As a result of this methodology it will be possible to draw the guidelines of the project of Landscape Architecture, so that it may fulfill the users’ real needs and become an integral project, according to the surrounding space and as an extension of it. This study allows the Landscape Architecture to work for the community but through a methodology which gives the opportunity to mix the project of a space according to the designer’s creativity with the utility and adaptation according to the users’ approach. The Medical Rehabilitation Centre of Alcoitão, where the green spaces are important to the patients’ rehabilitation and well-being, was chosen for this study case. The methodology tested in this place may be an useful tool for the development of architecture projects of other spaces attended by people with special needs.

ABSTRACT: Infectious disease outbreaks and epidemics are ailments of the civilization, known ever since there are historical records. Due to the limitation of the medical practices, the separation of the ill population from the healthy one, in proper facilities – the lazarettos –, was the only way to contain the propagation of those diseases, this is equivalent to recognizing the lack of effective prophylaxis in its treatment. Our work is based on the historical context of the lazarettos and the quarantine system, and approaches the illnesses that made the implementation of this system necessary from the 17th century. The focus of our study is the Lazareto de Lisboa. Our purpose is to restore and rehabilitate this building which has significant patrimonial value and potential to sustain a new program, maintaining its original calling as a health facility. The investigation divides itself in two methodological moments. The first, state-of-the-art construction, is based on literature review in the disciplinary areas to be convened, direct observation and photographic survey, collection and treatment of graphic documents that document the existing one. The second, is ruled by the design methodology of restoration, requalification and reuse to accommodate a rehabilitation centre for various types of addition

Abstract:
The preservation of historic cities requires on behalf of the actors committed to the urban development of the urban historic ensemble (EUH) additional efforts to extend their actions beyond isolated buildings. In practice, when developing historic urban ensembles, the conservation of the urban heritage seems to be relegated to an external if compulsory constraint which has to be overcome. This situation often results in the opposition of two aims: development versus conservatory. The question of how can the conservation of urban heritage be better considered is debated on international, national and local scales. By joining this current debate, our thesis aims to answer the following question: how can we improve the management of the imperatives behind urban development in historic cities, when tied to patrimonial obligation towards urban ensembles? The literature review helped us show that the notion of urban heritage, which justifies the urban preservation, was born in the minds of planners confronted with urban development, linking the notion of the urban heritage more closely to that of development than to conservation. In the absence of one that would move towards urban heritage preservation and confronted with the dominant if opposite postures, we realized, based on the literature review, that the opposition shared anchoring elements: the preservation paradigm of actions, centered on buildings and unsuitable in the case of ensembles, this paradigm supported by divergent institutional cultures and strengthened by an opposition between the modes of local implication.Considering the well-known difficulties and the contributions of the literature review, which clarifies the nature of the opposition between heritage conservation and development, how can the preservation of historic urban ensembles be thought differently? To answer that question, we propose reflecting on urban preservation as integrated to urban development. On the methodological level, the nature of the opposition between development and conservation sends us back to the analysis of what takes place on the field. We chose to look at the historic center of Avignon, where various actors have attempted to exceed this opposition. Avignon, as a mid-sized city of the South of France, is endowed with one of France’s biggest protected areas which cover the entire historic center. The history of the actions carried out in the intramural brings out archetypical situations which illustrate the opposition between development and conservation. The case study allowsus to intellectualise the mobilization of urban heritage on 3 levels: Institutional, Find and Urban action. Each of these levels distinguishes itself by the nature of the mobilization and by the point at which are made manifest the mobilization of the material and symbolic dimensions of urban heritage. Starting with the case study, we have conceptualised a model which goes beyond a restricted reading focused on the opposition to think out urban development within the context of urban conservation. The model brings into the urban development the notion of urban heritage designation as a succession of actions which qualify urban historic ensemble as heritage and preserve them. On the scientific level, the model mobilizes notions, borrowed from sociological, communicational, ethnological and geographical approaches of heritage designation. It proposes a new analytical framework for thinking about the actors involved in the urbanistic management of the historic urban ensembles, so as to exceed the oppositions and guarantee a sustainable creation of urban heritage which does not constitute an obstacle for the imperatives of development. The model helps us see the roles at stake and organizes the various actions undertaken by the various actors in favour of both heritage and development to come up with an integrated urban heritage designation

I bring out in this dissertation project a few significant issues like history of the city Covilha, located in the middle Portugal, which developed with textile industry, experienced high times thanks to it and suffered economical and social fall in the Industrial Revolution Times. Despite problematic times, the city managed to raise again from the crisis by finding new concept for city function, which nowadays is the symbol of the city – Universidade da Beira Interior. The subject is very interesting because of the fact that Covilha build itself again putting the University Faculties into former factory buildings showing that way its pride of the factor which ruined the city and respecting the left heritage. I would like to follow this experience by adapting former factory into Students’ Creativity Center with Architecture to show that the post-industrial heritage has a lot of potential and it’s highly re-designable for any function we can imagine.

Fire is part of our everyday life. As the relationship between man and fire grows, so does the danger of using it. In South Africa, the power of fire is unfortunately and commonly underestimated, resulting in more victims falling prey to the fire fiend. Facilities that provide specialized treatment for burn victims are limited. This includes treatment of the burn wound (cloned skin) and latent rehabilitation using physical and psychological therapy. The design of a building specialized for the needs of burn victims has been proposed. The facility will be mixed use and multi-functional: it will be a 2-part building consisting of a Skin Cloning Laboratory and a Rehabilitation Centre in Johannesburg. The site selected is located behind the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital (Joburg Gen). The site was chosen for its views, hospital connection and relationship to the Wits University Medical Faculty. The organic design was derived from the concept of “skin and the landscape”. The facade depicts the “element of water” and grows out of the excavated rock face wall.

This report presents and supports the grounds for the architectural design strategies considered for the work developed in the discipline of Projecto Final, during the academic year 2011/2012. Its main purpose is the rehabilitation of the so called old “Mercado de Escravos” (Slave Market) into a museologic space which incorporates a route in Lagos, while acting as a reminder of the city’s built heritage, particularly that which is shown by the route, in order to ensure the preservation of the memory of the city. A past memory that matters to bequeath for the future. This work focuses on developing contributions to the field of rehabilitation of the vast historical built heritage still in existence. Possible "conversion of uses" aimed at the reutilization of buildings, refurbishing them and giving them a new use, according to the current needs of the population. In an era of rationalization of land use regarding new constructions, rehabilitation followed by allocation of new uses is vital, given the growing number of abandoned buildings in historic centers and consolidated areas. It is motivating to reflect on the design approaches where the surroundings, the new function, the new users, amongst others, are determining factors in shaping the project and nature of the future building. In this sense, this work explores the subject of conversion of uses as a medium to act in the built heritage, enabling the reuse of old structures, integrating them into the uses and urban fabric which makes contemporary society.

Carnide did not lose its characteristics of rurality and still retains the typical peculiarities of a village within the city of Lisbon. However, its historical centre is threatened. The rehabilitation of its buildings is essential to halt the progressive aging of the population and depopulation of the district, thus returning regenerating life into this place and giving it the necessary conditions to attract new residents and activities, conditions that will be able to attract people to remain in the place and to attract more young people, bringing a new momentum to this historic centre. On the other hand, the architectural heritage is a valuable asset considering the identity, cultural, social and economic aspects; it links the past and the future, providing values, meanings and sensibilities that guarantee the preservation of our cultural identity, so that there is a constant binding of the concept of identity and belonging. This thesis aims to offer a new proposal on the recovery of the Built Heritage in Urban Carnide, keeping the historical memory and spirit of the place. The choice falls on a building that lies in ruins, leaving only the walls of the façade, situated at the Rua da Fonte. This street, besides being one of the main routes of access to the historic center, is also the way that makes the connection between the Jardim da Luz and the center of Carnide therefore in a prime location to be visited by anyone who wants to know this historical place. In this case the facade is the legacy, the heritage that is worth reflecting. It is also the surrounding element with higher surface, which has more contact with people, both those that are outside and inside the building, so it was seen as an opportunity for recovery of what was left as a legacy. So this project, while preserving the walls in ruins as a memorial of the past and the spirit of the place, adds a new volume that, although keeping the environment and intimate gathering, gives the necessary modernity to the building new uses. Also, the use has changed, in order to attract a younger layer of people to this place bringing a new dynamic. Thus, the building that once was a household would, according to this proposal, be a home for students. The aim of this study was to create an element sensitive to changes in our society, trying new and dynamic concepts; remaining in memory not just by being a place of passage, but rather a highlighted element; a striking point, which by their morphology stimulates the feelings, the unthinkable, and the unexpected. Creating a building, that, by its nature and use, stimulates new dynamic in the historical center of Carnide.

Abstract:
South Africa as a developing country faces the challenges of providing a better life for all its citizens. The South African society is of two extremes, a small population of the wealthy and a large portion of the poor. In a growing economy there is an increase in the gap between rich and poor. The rich work to keep their wealth and the poor work but struggle to provide the bare necessities for their families. The challenges facing South Africa are of alleviating poverty, through providing adequate shelter, jobs, education and health for all South Africans. These are essential elements that are needed to create better communities and functional families. The solutions to these problems are sometimes not thought through and integrated with other sectors of society. This leads to quick fix solutions to deep routed problems which are isolated to the countries’ developments. South Africa has a deep history rooted in apartheid. Living within a post apartheid society South Africans have inherited a built environment that was aimed for specific segregated population groups. In a democratic society people have an opportunity of “equal sharing” within the economy. This leaves a large portion of the population struggling to rid themselves of poverty. These are the major issues which lead to committing crime and consequently imprisonment. This research study specifically deals with the correctional services institutions built form, rehabilitation and reintegration processes for the ex-prisoner. The built forms role in society can be far reaching and shape the life form of its inhabitants. It can facilitate a positive role in deterring the social ills of society. Presently the built environments cannot accommodate the growing and integrated population groups. The role of the correctional facilities is important in providing safe communities by removing those individuals harmful to society. A thorough approach to imprisonment, rehabilitation and social reintegration of ex-prisoners will assist in keeping safe communities. The understanding of prisons, their environment and the role of the built form with regards to social reintegration processes is important. This will assist in lessening the amount of recidivism of ex-prisoners once released. This research seeks to establish the role in which the built form can support rehabilitation for ex-prisoners in the view of reintegrating them back into society.

The city of Faro in its urban form contains one historic center characterized by a set of buildings with patrimonial value. Today, many of these spaces are held back in their uses, and rehabilitating the only alternative to ruin. As such, the purpose of the presented work here is to help restore a building that contains the ability to streamline the heritage of the historic core of Faro. It is this theme that derives this thesis aimed to develop a project of rehabilitation and expansion of the former Convent of Our Lady of the Assumption, which is currently installed Municipal Museum of Faro. The choice of this building as an object of study is due to the fact that it is a national monument, whose spatial conditions do not offer the best functionality required for their current functions, suggesting, in this sense its redevelopment and expansion. The presented project is developed with the support of a research that aims to inform the theoretical foundation by which it is governed, first with the analysis of several authors that argue the architectural intervention in historic buildings, then from historical documents that brought the importance of heritage conservation. In short order the work is a way of proposing the intervention of contemporary architecture in the historic heritage as a way of promoting their protection while safeguarding a set of memories.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research document is to understand the social issues that are generated from a globally ageing demographic, which relate to the aged identity and the current care environments available to them. Research will be conducted under the hypothesis that the design of a strategically sited care facility which, grouped with facilities that pertain to the care of the aged, could improve the quality of life for the elderly whilst promoting intergenerational connectivity. It is also hoped that ageist stereotypes could be abridged by lowering the dependency of the elderly on care providers by providing preventative and post operative rehabilitative care. The scope of the work is limited to the urban context of South Africa's ageing population primarily based on the current trend of mass urbanisation, after the abolition of the Apartheid government, which is creating a new family dynamic within South Africa where the care of the elderly is shifting onto medical institutions and care facilities. The demand for aged care facilities and the lack of resources in the field of aged care potentially create a situation where medical facilities are unnecessarily overburdened. An architectural response was generated through an investigation of current literature, case studies, precedent studies and personally conducted interviews with a number of aged care professionals. The research was conducted from a global standpoint and then focused towards issues that affect the aged individuals identity and care. The goal of this research was ultimately to inform the design of a care facility within Pietermaritzburg that is responsive to the needs of the elderly whilst being innovative towards its approach of aged care within a community.

Abstract:
M.Tech. (Architectural Technology)
This project is an architectural response to a setting shared by an active open cast platinum mine and the surrounding rural traditional subsistence farming communities located in the Mogalakwena municipality, Limpopo Province. The area is characterised by its mine waste landscape and large open cast pits, all of which are remnants of the process of open cast mining. The Mogalakwena communities’ economic livelihood is largely dependent on agricultural land. This land is reducing, partly due to the establishment and expansion of the mine and partly to the increased growth rate of the surrounding communities. This project argues that the remnants of the mining industry (particularly open cast pits, mine waste rock and infrastructure) need not be redundant and can be reused and rehabilitated to result in productive outcomes by establishing the necessary systemic strategy for transposed use. It contends that the proposed reconfi gured mining infrastructure programs can be responsive to context (history, environment and communities), climate and natural processes of the area. In testing the strength of this argument, diff erent research investigations and theories were used as was appropriate to each area of research in this topic. These included, among others, investigations into the history and context of both the mining industry generally, including its legislative context, and the site specifi cally. Considerations of the embedded memory of the site were taken into account. Theories which assisted in leading to a proposed strategy for the site on a contextual scale included theories relating to contextual productive systems, continuous productive urban landscapes, permaculture and biomimicry, augmented landscapes, entropic architecture, architecture as a machine and the mortality of architecture. Ultimately, a proposed solution as an architectural product was sought. The following questions had to be answered in a eff orts to produce an appropriate architectural response to the site and its challenges: 1. How can the role of architecture reconfigure the redundant, disused mine waste landscape so as to harness a rehabilitative and productive system and how can that system be managed by the design? 2. How can contemporary rural agricultural projects be challenged to form new typologies that empower the communities to provide for their own present and future needs? 3. How can architecture as a system be designed to outlast the temporality of its program to transform a redundant open cast mining landscape into a productive landscape? The architectural intervention is a design of reconfi gured structures aimed at facilitating a productive and sustainable environment for agricultural advancement, in order to rehabilitate the existing “minescape” (industrially altered mining land), and reconcile the use of this land with the history of subsistence farming as practiced by members of the surrounding communities. The proposed architectural product strives to create a site and context responsive architectural program or system by fusing technological strategies into the body of architecture that are essentially environmental. It aims to employ air, water, sun, and earth to augment the productive relationship between architecture and the “minescaped” terrain, thereby creating a Productive Minescape, which yields tangible positive by-products such as agriculture, renewable energy, water treatment and harvesting systems, among others. Other productive by-products of the project are education and research facilities and facilities which aim to provide accessibility and reconciliation of the stakeholders of this area, to the site and to each other. The introduction of these systems and facilities will be phase one of the proposed architectural intervention. However, the intervention is networked, and therefore has a scalable logic which is envisaged to grow and develop at a much larger and more intensive scale, suggested to occur over the next 30 years, which are phases two, three and four (see figures 17 and 18).

Abstract:

Due to the growth of cities, the abandonment of historic centers has been a recurrent problem in cities, regardless of the size of these urban centers, and Torres Vedras is no exception. The creation of repopulation strategies is therefore of prime importance for these urban centers, no matter if they are public or private initiative. The first chapter analyzes the problem of urban eviction, as well as its causes and consequences. To do so, it was necessary to make use of sociological studies carried out on the historic center of Torres Vedras, revealing the reality of the city, and the urgent need to intervene in order to reverse the spiral of depopulation. The study of the concepts of City and Rehabilitation, as well as the analysis of programs supporting urban rehabilitation and the analysis of some projects promoted by private entities are preponderant in the sense that they give us directives for the creation of a proposal for a new rehabilitation strategy. In the second chapter, after analyzing the City of Torres Vedras and its foundation, the intervention in a certain building with a strategic location.is proposed. The location is next to an old City Gate right in front of a National Monument (Chafariz dos Canos) and will be considered as a gateway to the siral of repopulation. The building had former been an old inn, known as the "Casa Solarenga" and is the prefect specimen for what is Rehabilitate to inhabit. Thus, a project / concept of rehabilitation is presented by respecting the genesis of the building and taking full advantage of its characteristics. In the third chapter we analyze what has been done, as well as how our intervention could be catalytic for others in the immediate vicinity, creating an effective spiral of repopulation of this historical nucleus. By assuming this a successfull strategy and by analyzing what happens next to the other three Doors of the City, not one, but four Spirals of Repopulation of the historical center of Torres Vedras would be created.

The present dissertation aims at an urban rehabilitation in Silves through the project of a hotel and a cultural forum in an old cork factory. The block located on Rua Cruz da Palmeira, next to the Municipal Market, presents an irregular shape since it is located in a drawer and has undergone changes in the building when the construction of the marginal avenue. Since it’s located in a privileged area of the city, it is surrounded by public transportation stops and a taxi rank, a waterfront with sports facilities, restaurants and traditional shops, and is located next to the historical center, renewal of this "sleeping" city. Since it’s a city that lives of tourism, it’s unthinkable that it’s greater revenue is wasted by the lack of tourist accommodation in the urban core. In addition the lack of a place worthy of promotion of the culture is remarkable, reason why is meant the fusion of both in the quarter under study.

This study focuses on the historic centre of Porto. The fundamental objective of the study is to define a methodology for intervention in complex urban contexts. It aims at rehabilitating a number of urban blocks, identified as deprived areas, by integrating housing, commerce, services, facilities and green areas, along a ‘path’ - a structure that be able to contribute for the regeneration of the the historic centre. This methodology aims to act, not only in the physical dimension of the city but also, on the quality of life of residents in this area of the city. The first part of the research corresponds to the theoretical and methodological framework, focusing on the debate on the intervention on the existing city, and addressing a number of interventions in three European cities, Barcelona, Berlin and Venice. The second part of the investigation focuses on the city of Porto: from the evolution of the physical form of the city, to the way this is being planned, and to a focus on the rehabilitation of the historic city centre. Next, it moves to the core of the thesis – the proposal for a methodology of intervention in complex urban contexts. This investigation is concluded emphasizing the potential advantages of this methodology to the city of Porto and to other cities with similar characteristics.

The goal of this paper is to study urban intervention strategies, specifically covering the Historical Center of Praia, in Santiago, Cape Verde. During the year of 1520, the Plateau of the city of Praia started to become populated, this was due to its location and defensive advantage. But it was only until the XVII century that the city truly started to take form. The study and interpretation of previous cartography (dated back to the XVII century until the end of the XX century) were vital in understanding the urban evolution and the importance of urban form. Basing off of acquired information (using old cartography and more recent plans) and also following field studies performed in 2016, it was possible to organize data pertaining to the 475 constructions on the Plateau, as well as a compound of quarters chosen to give example. Under this area of study, photographic surveys were conducted, as well as drawing plans of the streets, displaying their characteristics (state of conservation, number of floors, the use for these constructions and the architectural classifications) as well as an administrative tecnical regulations proposal. The study conducted showed that, currently, there is high demand for residential and commercial space and also that proprietors have carried out constructions without respect to the architectural heritage of the Plateau, this has provoked the loss thereof. The strategic proposal designed intends to implement basic regulations aimed at proprietors and architects, to safeguard buildings of high interest and group character. The strategy designed, in form of drawed technical files, may present itself as a tremendous asset in the safeguarding of the character of the Plateau, requiring that the regulations instilled by the PDM of the city of Praia, as well as the regulations that protect the architectural heritage are respected.

The population increase through out the years in the city of Lisbon as lead to the development of its pariches. Nevertheless, sometimes the primitive streets, have been forgoteen, as well as the elements that already exist in the area, have beeing absorved by the new urban design and the excessive growth. The new elements are the ones leading to the under evoluation of the historical center, that nowdays are searching to value and improve. Now days, the reabilitation has another impact, comparing what use to happen in the begining of the XX century. The reabilitation is no longer restrict to what is built, but also to the envolving area, to an urban level, trying this way to preserve the identity of a whole space and not just a façade. In thiis line of thinking, emerges the present proposal of a urban reabilitation for one of the primitive street of Lisbon, configuring it as a new urban space and a façade. The studing object is the urban reabilitation of Rua da Fonte and its corner building, located in Carnide, one of the oldest entres to the old historical center of the pariches. Carnide as sufered a lot of changes in the past years, mainly in the historical area, that the objective is the realization of this, witch as list its importance facing the surrouding urban development, this way giving a new life to this area, starting from reabilitation and valorization interventions of the area and the contruction it self.

This dissertation focuses on the observation of the potential of Architecture as a key factor for the creation of comfort and aid in healing disease situation, in particular, pediatric facilities. It is proposed a Relocation Center for Pediatric Rehabilitation in Portimão. The projected place is thought to connect the Hospital Center in Barlavento (Algarve western side), justified by its obvious need. This project aims to reflect on how a built environment can contribute to a better comfort, both physical and psychological, for the users of these health areas. Nowadays, Health Centers are pointing out for targeted projects concerning a greater humanization. In this sense, the architecture of this type of program exceeds the technical, simple and formal composition of this environments. Regarding Pediatric Services, it should be understood that the hospitalized children and adolescents have specific needs, not only medical, that need to be considered with the same importance. This work was organized in two parts: the first is defined as a research study on the suggested theme and the second is dedicated to the project itself. In the first part, it is discussed three different subjects: the first chapter is an approach to the evolution of hospital buildings throughout its history as well as the most relevant pediatric facilities in Portugal; in the second chapter, it is discussed the physical medicine and rehabilitation service, in general, and the physical medicine and pediatric rehabilitation services, in particular, in order to contextualize the issue in its most relevant aspects for the architectural design; in the third chapter it is studied the relationship between architecture and psychology (the prominent theme). Finally, in the fourth chapter it is discussed the case studies: two buildings with different scales and programs, but both with the same relevance for this dissertation. The second part is dedicated to the project, which is divided into important topics regarding a better comprehension.

This work has as main objective to study the Seixal City, which, following the industrial collapse was deeply affected. Nowadays is facing a process of reconfiguration territorial, social, economic and population, particularly in its historic core. These changes result from the new social paradigm, and especially now in a new global economy that is underway. Indeed, contemporary society is facing new challenges and ongoing changes in many sectors, in which the mobility paradigm becomes a central factor in the growth and improvement of towns. With the entry of intelligent cities, the city is seen obliged to profound changes in the territory, that will be examined in this case, the arrival of the South Tagus Metro as link core between Lisbon and the South Bank, in order to make this city increasingly independent of cars and with better access to neighboring cities. This analysis seeks to answer some questions, the issue of whether what will happen in the territory due to the passage of the MST in the county, as will be the articulation of the cities of Almada, Seixal and Barreiro with this innovation in inter-municipal mobility, and how will the city of Seixal as a city future metropolis organized around the Bay of Seixal. In view of the research for this thesis, it can be said that the MST will generate a new order in the territory, which enables a new centralisation of the population in old urban areas by if they can move more effectively and quickly. On the other hand, the city of Seixal as a center of the two banks is strongly related and linked to Lisbon by the Tagus River, but also with the Barreiro making hinge between several municipalities with plenty of potentials. As for its bay, the various revitalization projects, valuation and strategic can further streamline the county and the Bay of Seixal.

This work discusses the rehabilitation and conversion of Fábrica da Cerveja (Beer Factory), an old industrial building, located in the historical center of Faro (Vila-Adentro) in Algarve. The challenge of researching and designing an urban context of industrial nature it has been increasingly addressed in architecture and provides for the decentralization of the previously active cores, which today it helps to rethink and create new dynamics and a new active centrality in the city. The importance of these spaces of the city marks the identity and decades of productivity of a community, which are now ghost buildings that age without any use, but with great potential to adapt to new uses due to their tipology. The building under study represent a particular case of double identity marked by history due to the fact that it has been built in an industrial zone within the walled perimeter of the historical center of Faro precisely where the old castle stood. It is intended to conduct a research study of the historical and urban structure of the city and the adaptation of the building in this context by rethinking a suitable program to solve social and economic weaknesses of the city, investigating syllabus that complement basic lefe principles as work, habitation and leisure. The programmatic content focuses on the enhancement of cultural content in order to explore the feasibility of using production and exhibition of culture, attaching a percentage of temporary housing that supports and gives living conditions and ease of residence to users of production. The rehabilitation theme has a careful approach respecting the architectural references and elements existing in the side that may be relevant to show the point of view of the project, both of the industrial and hidden historical heritage. Ultimately is intended that a building of historical and industrial value inside Vila Adentro might play an essential role in the rejuvenation of the historic core, enabling a new city centrality.

Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical study of Erika Theron (1907-1990), an Afrikaner woman who played a significant role in many aspects of public life in South Africa in a critical time in the country‘s history. The study seeks to give recognition to her achievements, which have received scant attention in a historiography with a masculine bias. At the same time it examines her changing role from collaborator to critic of the apartheid system. Certain defining features of Theron‘s life have been highlighted. First, Theron grew up in a staunchly Afrikaner nationalist, service-oriented family which encouraged loyalty to her own people and civic responsibility. Second, she was unusual among Afrikaner women of her generation, in that she was highly educated, independent and ready to assume leadership roles. She became a pioneer in a number of fields, attaining high professional rank and holding important public offices – frequently as the first woman to do so in the country. The thesis focuses on five areas of Theron‘s public life. After returning from post-graduate studies abroad, she worked with Hendrik Verwoerd in the campaign to uplift poor whites, particularly the rehabilitation and re-integration of the Afrikaner poor. She thereafter commenced a long career as a social work academic, which included a number of milestones for her new discipline, for the profession of social work and for the advancement of women in academia. From the 1950s she served on the town council of Stellenbosch, including terms as deputy mayor and mayor. She played an important role in historic conservation but was also instrumental in the rigorous institution of apartheid structures in the town during the early days of National Party rule. In the early 1970s she served as chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into Coloured Affairs which influenced her personal views on the country‘s race policies. She became a public critic of many aspects of the apartheid system and vocal advocate for coloured rights.
