Abstract:
Abstract Across her six feature films since 1994, American director Kelly Reichardt has taken time as a mechanism to reveal and question social, political, and economic structures. This article looks closely at how her films display a range of temporal interventions and resistances to features of capitalist temporalities. While film theorists and critics often locate Reichardt’s films within “slow cinema,” this article expands the range of temporal concepts applied to her films to explore the sociopolitical critique at work through this auteur’s aesthetics. The analysis focuses on time in three of Reichardt’s feature films, starting with commodified and metaphysical time in Old Joy (2006), then addressing impatience, entropy, and environmentalism’s temporalities in Night Moves (2013), and ending with an exploration of disconnection-and denial of coevalness-in Certain Women (2016). This article applies close scene analysis-along with a range of philosophical, political, and sociological concepts of time-to demonstrate how Reichardt elucidates and resists the temporal tensions underpinning social relations within capitalist culture.

This article examines representations of the road in the work of independent Florida-born film director Kelly Reichardt. Reading Reichardt's so-called Oregon trilogy,Old Joy(2006),Wendy and Lucy(2008), andMeek's Cutoff(2010), alongside radical anti-freeway and anti-automobile movements from the Pacific Northwest, I argue that Reichardt's films offer critical engagements with the subject of the American road, interrogating the freedom and emancipation from social constraint it purportedly offers.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this work was to present a morphological description and ecological characteristics of a rare species from the Gomphonema genus, occurring in calcium-rich waters, along with its new occurrence sites. The research was carried out in flowing waters of mountain and sub-mountain streams and rivers in Poland: the Wołosaty, the Wisłoka, the San and their tributaries. The occurrence of many rare and new to Polish flora species from the genus Gomphonema was recorded: G. cuneolus E. Reichardt, G. drutelingense E. Reichardt, G. innocens E. Reichardt,G. lateripunctatum E. Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot, G. lippertii E. Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot and G. calcifugum Lange-Bertalot & E. Reichardt. These species occur mostly in alkaline or close-to-neutral waters with medium or low electrolytic conductivity (78–530 μS cm-1), low nutrient content and medium-to-high calcium ion content (12.4–76.4 mg l-1). Despite the rare occurrence in other parts of the world, the studied Gomphonema species has found favorable conditions in unpolluted and calcium-rich stream beds with flysch strata. The literature data define G. calcifugum as a non-calciphilous species, but this study shows that it can develop in a wide pH range and in calcium-rich waters.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTAmong the gems buried in Johann Friedrich Reichardt’s short-lived Berlinische musikalische Zeitung is a ‘Musikalischer Briefwechsel’ that appeared over three volumes in September 1805. The text, cast as an epistolary exchange between the fictional characters Arithmos and Phantasus, argues the merits of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. (The opera had recently returned to the Berlin stage after a thirteen-year absence.) The exchange has received little scholarly attention, and yet it is a remarkable document for the glimpse it gives both into Berlin’s musical politics and, most of all, the reception history of Mozart’s opera. The authorship of the ‘Briefwechsel’, which appeared pseudonymously, has been attributed to Georg Christian Schlimbach, a frequent contributor to the journal. This article, in contrast, argues that Reichardt himself makes the more likely author: the correspondence more closely reflects his personality, his ambitions for the advancement of opera in the Prussian capital and his theory of art. Indeed, arising from his defence of Mozart’s opera is an extraordinary claim in the history of Così’s reception: that the work exemplifies romantic irony. E. T. A. Hoffmann is famous for his terse praise of the opera’s ‘ergötzlichste Ironie’. Reichardt, however, goes further by showing how the opera amalgamates, in quintessentially romantic fashion, the opposing forces of the comic and serious. Employing a Shakespearean conceit, he argues that Mozart’s music amounts to more than ‘much ado about nothing’.Reichardt’s move is the more significant given that he builds his reading not on Da Ponte’s libretto but on German adaptations by Bretzner and Treitschke, translations that modern scholarship has widely faulted for lacking the original’s subtlety. Thus, although Così fan tutte has generally been viewed as a work that runs counter to romantic tastes, Reichardt’s ‘Briefwechsel’, along with some newly discovered material, provides a basis for revisiting that claim about the opera’s place in nineteenth-century thought.

Abstract:
Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752–1814), Royal Prussian Court Kapellmeister and composer of songs and musical comedies, also made a name for himself as the author of music-related writings. This article argues that Reichardt, in his biographical narratives and character studies of composers such as Graun, Hasse, and Handel as well as of fictional musicians (Gulden, Hermenfried), relates the fundamental anthropological questions discussed in his Königsberg environment (Kant, Hamann, Herder) to the specific conditions of life as a musician.

Abstract:
Visual motion contains a wealth of information about self-motion as well as the three-dimensional structure of the environment. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for any organism with eyes. However, visual motion information is not explicitly represented at the photoreceptor level, but rather has to be computed by the nervous system from the changing retinal images as one of the first processing steps. Two prominent models have been proposed to account for this neural computation: the Reichardt detector and the gradient detector. While the Reichardt detector correlates the luminance levels derived from two adjacent image points, the gradient detector provides an estimate of the local retinal image velocity by dividing the spatial and the temporal luminance gradient. As a consequence of their different internal processing structure, both the models differ in a number of functional aspects such as their dependence on the spatial-pattern structure as well as their sensitivity to photon noise. These different properties lead to the proposal that an ideal motion detector should be of Reichardt type at low luminance levels, but of gradient type at high luminance levels. However, experiments on the fly visual systems provided unambiguous evidence in favour of the Reichardt detector under all luminance conditions. Does this mean that the fly nervous system uses suboptimal computations, or is there a functional aspect missing in the optimality criterion? In the following, I will argue in favour of the latter, showing that Reichardt detectors have an automatic gain control allowing them to dynamically adjust their input–output relationships to the statistical range of velocities presented, while gradient detectors do not have this property. As a consequence, Reichardt detectors, but not gradient detectors, always provide a maximum amount of information about stimulus velocity over a large range of velocities. This important property might explain why Reichardt type of computations have been demonstrated to underlie the extraction of motion information in the fly visual system under all luminance levels.

Abstract:
AbstractDirector Kelly Reichardt has been celebrated as an independent filmmaker who takes risks in developing complicated and often fraught storylines, especially for her female characters. In Meek’s Cutoff (2010), she uses the aesthetics of slow cinema to show details frequently overlooked in the Western. In doing so, the film lays bare the violence of the settler-colonial West, highlighting the underside of European-American dreams of progress and prosperity. Addressing settler women’s investments in nation-building projects, the film traces how their commitments to Whiteness helped underwrite expansionist history. Noting the limits as well as the forms of agency White women claimed in the West, Reichardt pushes the boundaries of the women’s Western in ways that foreground Indigenous lives and the possibilities of decolonization.

Abstract:
This study addressed the ‘correspondence’ problem of apparent-motion (AM) perception in which parts of a scene must be matched with counterparts separated in time and space. Given evidence that AM correspondence can be mediated by two distinct processes—one based on a low-level motion-detection mechanism (the Reichardt process), the other involving the tracking of objects by visual attention (the attention-based process)—the present study explored how these processes interact in the perception of apparent motion between hierarchically structured figures. In three experiments, hierarchical figures were presented in a competition motion display so that, across frames, figures were identical at either the local or the global level. In experiment 1 it was shown that AM occurred between locally identical figures. Furthermore, with the Reichardt AM component eliminated in experiments 3 and 4, no preference was obtained for either level. While evidence from previous studies suggests that form extraction for hierarchically structured figures proceeds from the global to the local level, the present results indicate the irrelevance of such a global precedence in AM correspondence. In addition, it is suggested that Reichardt AM correspondence between local elements constrains attention-based AM correspondence between global figures so that both components move in the same direction. It is argued that this constraining process represents an elegant means of achieving AM correspondence between objects undergoing complex transformations.

Abstract:
One of the basic operations in sensory processing is the computation of the temporal order of excitation of sensors. Motivated by the discrepancy between models and experiments at high signal contrast, we obtain families of algorithms by solutions of a general set of equations that define temporal order detection as an input-to-output relationship. Delays and nonlinear operations are the basis of all algorithms found, but different algorithmic structures exist when the operations are multiplications, OR gates, different types of AND-NOT logical gates, or concatenated ANDNOT gates. Among others, we obtain the Hassenstein-Reichardt model, a network using a multiplicative operation that has been proposed to explain fly optomotor behavior. We also find extensions of the Barlow-Levick model (based on an AND-NOT gate with delayed inhibition and nondelayed excitation as inputs), originally proposed to explain the bipolar cell response of the rabbit retina to motion stimuli. In the extended models, there are two more steps, another AND-NOT gate, and a subtraction or two subtractions that make the model responsive only to motion. In response to low-contrast inputs, the concatenated AND-NOT gates or the AND-NOT gate followed by a subtraction in these new models act as the multiplicative operation in the Hassenstein-Reichardt model. At high contrast, the new models behave like the Hassenstein-Reichardt model except that they are independent of contrast as observed experimentally.

Nature (Lond.). 334:62-64) have provided evidence that N-cadherin, alone or in combination with other molecules, can participate in the induction of neurite extension. We have developed an affinity purification procedure for the isolation of whole N-cadherin from chick brain and have used the isolated protein as a substrate for neurite outgrowth. N-cadherin promotes the rapid extension of neurites from chick ciliary ganglion neurons, which extend few or no neurites on adhesive but noninducing substrates such as polylysine, tissue culture plastic, and collagens. N-cadherin is extremely potent, more so than the L1 adhesion molecule, and comparable to the extracellular matrix protein laminin. Compared to laminin, however. N-cadherin promotes outgrowth from ciliary ganglion neurons extremely rapidly and with a distinct morphology. These results provide a direct demonstration that N-cadherin is sufficient to induce neurite outgrowth when substrate bound and suggest that the mechanism(s) involved may differ from that induced by laminin.

Abstract:
The results of studying the diatoms in epixylon of 15 water objects in European Northeast of Russia are presented. The samples of nature biofilms from external surfaces of submersed branches of Betula nana, Salix spp., woody snags, and wood debris were investigated. A comparative analysis of diatoms in fouling of woody substrates was carried out from coal-mine settling pond, lakes, streams, and different parts of mountain river. These are in the basins of Ortina, Vorcuta, More-Yu, Vychegda, Izhgma, Shchugor rivers. In stagnant waters diversity of diatoms form 9–56, in waterways 10–102 taxa. Encyonema minutum (Hilse) Mann, Navicula radiosa Kützing, Tabellaria flocculosa (Roth) Kützing were most frequently. A small degree of diatoms similarity in epixylon with other communities was revealed; the Sørensen coefficient is 0,3–0,4. Part of the diatoms with an abundance 3–6 points (28 taxa) were found only in one water bodies. Among them, in thermokarst lakes with low salinity water and a weakly acid reaction halophobic, acidophilic Eunotia microcephala Krasske, Kobayasiella subtilissima (Cleve) Lange-Bertalot, and Cymbella borealis Cleve prevail. In the coal–mine settling pond dominating group is represented by the alkaliphilic, halophilic Diatoma tenuis C. Agardh, Nitzschia clausii Hantzsch, and Gomphonema productum (Grunow) Lange-Bertot et Reichardt. Mountain streams are distinguished by the development of rheophilic Meridion circulare (Grѐville) C. Agardh, Diatoma mesodon (Ehrenberg) Kützing, Encyonema reichardtii (Krammer) Mann, Fragilaria gracilis Oestrup, Fragilariforma virescens (Ralfs) Williams et Round, Gomphonema montanum (Schumann) Grunow, G. pumilum (Grunow) Reichardt et Lange-Bertalot, G. ventricosum Gregory, Hannaea arcus (Ehrenberg) Patrick var. arcus et f. recta (Cleve) Foged. The composition of the epixylon dominant complexes also differs depending on the hydrological conditions and characteristics of aquatic environment. These differences in this community determine the significant diversity of this group of algae as a whole. In total, 244 species with intraspecific taxa from 67 genera and 27 families identified, and a large number of rare species found.

Abstract:
In Meek’s Cutoff (2010) and Eden (2012), filmmakers Kelly Reichardt and Megan Griffiths (respectively) negotiate the interconnection between women, nature, and patriarchal capitalism through their emphasis on place, or one’s separation from it. Ecofeminist aesthetics resonate with regional production when directors emphasize relationships with environments and people over typical neoliberal concerns of production such as cost and infrastructure. A particular political aesthetics emerges when the approach emphasizes building community and the politics of place, rather than the bottom line. Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff shifts from the panoramic landscape shots of the classical Western to allow gendered engagement. This framing redirects the viewer away from the supposedly “male” action and instead focuses on the constant work of the women, which is the real action of survival. In Eden, Griffiths similarly frames human trafficking victim Hyun Jae in closed spaces where she is forced into sex work. Such cinematography is drastically juxtaposed with the open framing that signals potential emancipation. In each film, feminist politics intertwine with aesthetics of space to resist patriarchal capitalism co-opting women’s labor, an approach relevant to both environmentalism and feminism.

Abstract:
Abstract Members of the subgenus Nessus Reichardt, 1932 of the genus Hypocaccus C. Thomson, 1867 from Central Europe are revised based on examination of the type material. A nidicolous new species Hypocaccus (Nessus) hungaricus sp. nov. is described and figured. Saprinus curtus Rosenhauer, 1847 is transferred to the subgenus Nessus Reichardt, 1932 of the genus Hypocaccus C. Thomson, 1867. Hypocaccus (Nessus) puncticollis (Küster, 1849) is synonymized with Hypocaccus (Nessus) curtus (Rosenhauer, 1847) syn. nov., based on examination of the type material. A neotype for Hister [= Hypocaccus (Nessus)] rufipes Kugelann, 1792 is designated. Lectotypes and paralectotypes of the following taxa are designated herein: Hister rufipes Paykull, 1798, Saprinus curtus Rosenhauer, 1847, Saprinus puncticollis Küster, 1849, Saprinus arenarius Marseul, 1855, Saprinus longistrius Marseul, 1855, Saprinus cribellaticollis Jacquelin du Val, 1858, Saprinus sicanus Marseul, 1862, Saprinus revisus Marseul, 1876, and Hypocacculus (Nessus) controversus G. Müller, 1937. All species are redescribed and provided with images and male genitalia drawings. A key to the species is given. Hypocaccus (Nessus) controversus is newly reported from Cyprus, and Hypocaccus (Nessus) rufipes is newly reported from Turkey.

Abstract:
AbstractThere are marked similarities in the adaptation to motion observed in wide-field directional neurons found in the mammalian nucleus of the optic tract and cells in the insect lobula plate. However, while the form and time scale of adaptation is comparable in the two systems, there is a difference in the directional properties of the effect. A model based on the Reichardt detector is proposed to describe adaptation in mammals and insects, with only minor modifications required to account for the differences in directionality. Temporal-frequency response functions of the neurons and the model are shifted laterally and compressed by motion adaptation. The lateral shift enhances dynamic range and differential motion sensitivity. The compression is not caused by fatigue, but is an intrinsic property of the adaptive process resulting from interdependence of temporal-frequency tuning and gain in the temporal filters of the motion detectors.
