Abstract:

Textbooks that are too difficult to read will decrease students’ motivation in learning, while textbooks that are too easy to read will make students less interested in reading them. Therefore, the readability analysis needs to be done so that the textbooks used as learning media are suitable for the students who become the target readers of the books. This study analyzes the texts in Junior High School English textbooks entitled “English in Focus” grades VII, VIII, and IX published by the Center of Book Archieve of the Department of National Education by using cloze procedure. The tests were carried out in SMPN 1 Gunungputri and SMP Sejahtera 2 Cileungsi, involving students in grades VII, VIII, and IX. The texts tested were adapted to their grade levels. The tests were made in the form of 100 words which were then omitted at every 5th word. The readability results of “English in Focus” textbook are that not all texts in the book are suitable for students who use it. If the books are considered as suitable teaching material, these books need some changes because there are 6 texts from the total of 24 texts that are considered too difficult for students.

Keywords: textbook assessment, readability, cloze procedure

Reading is not only one of the purposes of English teaching, but also an important way of English learning. Students’ knowledge of English reading enables them to read effectively. At this time, students’ reading focus will gradually shift from learning to using English to obtain information and experience the real purpose of English reading. The traditional junior high school English reading teaching can’t meet the requirements of the new curriculum reform and helps students achieve their initial learning goals. Based on the basic theoretical knowledge of English reading teaching, this article analyzes the problems encountered by teachers and students in the process of English reading teaching, and puts forward the corresponding countermeasures, hoping to promote the level of junior high school students’ English reading teaching.

Taking as reference the society in nowadays and understand the read with process result cultural historical, this research had like all goal. Analyze and read in high school junior from of perspective of your pole of production an of reception and specific goal to know how the read of world in high school junior is organized and staged for teachers and understand how the students if appropriated this world of read. The research was development in for public school in Manaus of north and east zone of state and municipal of teach. Participated of research 48 customer Bering 08 teachers Portuguese language and 40 students 8º and 9º years of high school junior and was used with instruments for collection data the interview small structure for the teachers and questionnaire for students. For substantiate this research, appeal the Chartier (1990, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2007), that accost the read as Bering inserted process between the pole of production and the reception of pole. For this author, the editor, the collection, the commentator, the translator, they try of any way command, rules suggest, conditionally that view to stop the read freedom and this way to get licensed read, according to with what was though at production pole. At reception of pole, anther wise, are the reads and yours proctors invented , nobody know, to keep without return freedom that there is this pole. How the scene of our research is the school, we see the teachers at production of pole as the what organize, and choose, select the read to do at schools, and then at pole reception, are the students like that what if appropriate of organize read for teachers. We see the teacher at production os pole was a appropriated of Chartier theory did, in he begin for Corrêa (2001) when investigated the read at university. The some way that this author, too did this association at environment schools and how students if appropriated this read.

Abstract:
Early adolescence is a critical time for examining academic motivation, specifically motivation to read (Hervey, 2013). In order to support self-determined motivation to read, students’ needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness must be met within the classroom context (Miller & Faircloth, 2014). Since classroom instructional practices are a key component of adolescents’ daily experiences in the classroom, research which investigates the influence of these practices on students’ self-determined motivation to read is needed. In addition, the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the degree to which classroom instructional practices meet students’ needs as well as the influence of classroom instructional practices on students’ self-determined motivation to read must be considered as the perceptions of these two groups of classroom stakeholders rarely fully converge (Delaney et al., 2014; Wang & Eccles, 2014). However, the field is lacking an established measure of both groups’ perceptions of classroom instructional practices and the degree to which they support students’ needs (i.e., competence, autonomy, relatedness) and self-determined (intrinsic) motivation to read. Therefore, this study sought to address this gap in the literature by developing and validating a measure with parallel teacher and student forms called the Language Arts Reading Practices Survey (LARPS). This measure assessed student and teacher perceptions of the degree to which classroom instructional practices in the language arts classroom support students’ needs for competence, autonomy, relatedness, and students’ self-determined motivation to read. The results of this study provide preliminary support for the validity of the student form of the LARPS, with less support for the teacher form of the measure. By assessing both student and teacher perceptions, the LARPS adds to the general understanding of specific instructional practices and how stakeholder groups view these practices regarding their ability to support students’ needs and motivation.
