Bueno, Irene, ed. Pope Benedict XII (1334-1342). NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462986770.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a unique overview on the career and work on Benedict XII, the third pope of Avignon. Benedict XII (ca. 1334-1342) was a key figure of the Avignon papal court, renowned for rooting out heretics and distinguishing himself as a refined theologian. During his reign, he faced the most significant religious and political challenges in the era of the Avignon papacy: theological quarrels, divisions and schisms within the Church, conflicts between European sovereigns, and the growth of Turkish power in the East. In spite of its diminished political influence, the papacy, which had recently moved to France, emerged as an institution committed to the defense and expansion of the Catholic faith in Europe and the East. Benedict made significant contributions to the definition of doctrine, the assessment of pontifical power in Western Europe, and the expansion of Catholicism in the East: in all these different contexts he distinguished himself as a true guardian of orthodoxy.

Abstract:
Soon after his first inauguration in 1934, New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia began appointing women into his administration. By the end of his three terms he had installed almost a hundred women as lawyers, board and commission members and secretaries, deputy commissioners, and judges. No previous mayor had done anything comparable. These “Women of the La Guardia Administration” met frequently for mutual support and political strategizing. This book tells their stories. It begins with the city’s suffrage movement, which prepared them for political action. After they won the vote in 1917, they joined political party clubs and began to run for office. Their plan was to use political platforms to enact feminist and progressive public policies. Circumstances unique to mid-twentieth-century New York City advanced their progress. In 1930, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized an inquiry into alleged corruption in the city’s government, long dominated by the Democratic Party’s machine, Tammany Hall. The inquiry turned first to charges of Vice Squad entrapment of women for sex crimes and their treatment in the city’s Women’s Court. Outraged by the inquiry’s disclosures and impressed by La Guardia’s pledge to rein in Tammany, many New York City women activists supported him for mayor. As appointees in his administration, they then helped him fulfill his plans for modernizing city government. This book argues that La Guardia’s women appointees contributed to his administration’s success and left a rich legacy of experience and political wisdom to oncoming generations of women in politics.

Abstract:
This chapter describes in detail the location, energetic functions, and special features of each point in the eight extra channels (known as Qi Jing Ba Mai): Du, Ren, Chong, Dai, Yin Wei, Yang Wei, Yin Qiao, and Yang Qiao. It emphasizes that the unique features of each point come from their associations with specific organs and their connections with other energy channels. The clinical indications for mental and physical dysfunctions due to channel blockages and organic energetic imbalance are only some examples of the clinical use of these points. After reading this chapter, the practitioner should be able to expand his or her usage based on the features and functions of these points.

Bergmann, Michael. Radical Skepticism and Epistemic Intuition. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192898487.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Radical Skepticism and Epistemic Intuition rejects argument-based attempts to resist radical skepticism and advocates, instead, for noninferential intuition-based commonsense resistance inspired by the eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid. The book begins by setting aside closure-based arguments for radical skepticism and focusing on the more fundamental underdetermination arguments, which highlight the problematic gap between our evidence and our beliefs that are based on that evidence despite their truth being underdetermined by it. The rejected argument-based response to skepticism aims to provide good noncircular arguments from the evidence on which we base our ordinary beliefs (e.g. our perceptual and memory beliefs) to the conclusion that those beliefs are true or at least probable. Part I of the book finds all such anti-skeptical arguments wanting. Part II lays out and defends a unique version of the commonsense Reid-inspired response to radical skepticism, with two distinctive features. The first is its self-conscious, explicit, and extensive reliance on epistemic intuitions, which are seemings about the nature and exemplification of epistemic goods (such as justification or knowledge). The second is that it is ecumenical in the sense that it can be endorsed without difficulty by both internalists and externalists in epistemology. Part III of the book responds to objections to the commonsense reliance on epistemic intuitions proposed in Part II, with special attention given to challenges from underdetermination, epistemic circularity, disagreement, and experimental philosophy.

Abstract:
Most of our information about Herod the Great derives from the accounts found in Josephus’ Jewish War and Jewish Antiquities. Together they constitute quite a unique resource on one of the most famous personalities of ancient history. But whence did Josephus get his information? It is commonly agreed that his primary source was Nicolaus of Damascus, Herod’s court historian, though the extent to which Josephus adapted his material remains disputed. This book takes a modern source-critical approach to Josephus’ extensive account of Herod’s reign to suggest that Josephus did indeed rely heavily on Nicolaus’s work, but that previous scholarship was mistaken in seeing Nicolaus as a mere propagandist. Nicolaus may have begun his Universal History while Herod was alive, but he finished it after his death. He thus had no reason to write propaganda. This makes his work all the more interesting, for what we have instead is something rather different: a Syrian intellectual claiming a place in Augustan Rome, by telling a story about what the Augustan World looks like on the Eastern periphery. We delineate Nicolaus’ approach to various critical topics in Herod’s reign in order to reveal the Damascene’s perception of client kingship, the impact of empire, and the difficulties involved in ruling Judaea. Most significantly of all, we uncover an Eastern intellectual’s view on how to succeed and how to fail in the new Augustan world order.

Abstract:
This book approaches Ulster Protestantism through its theatrical and cultural intersection with politics, re-establishing a forgotten history and engaging with contemporary debates. Anchored by the perspectives of ten writers–some of whom have been notably active in political life—it uniquely examines tensions going on within. Through its exploration of class division and drama from the early twentieth century to the present, the book restores the progressive and Labour credentials of the community’s recent past along with its literary repercussions, both of which appear in recent decades to have diminished. Drawing on over sixty interviews, unpublished scripts, as well as rarely-consulted archival material, we can see—contrary to a good deal of clichéd polemic and safe scholarly assessment—that Ulster Protestants have historically and continually demonstrated a vigorous creative pulse as well as a tendency towards Left wing and class politics. St John Ervine, Thomas Carnduff, John Hewitt, Sam Thompson, Stewart Parker, Graham Reid, Ron Hutchinson, Marie Jones, Christina Reid, and Gary Mitchell profoundly challenge as well as reflect their communities. Illuminating a diverse and conflicted culture stretching beyond Orange Order parades, the weaving together of the lives and work of each of the writers considered highlights mutual themes and insights on the identity, as if part of some grander tapestry of alternative twentieth century Protestant culture. Ulster Protestantism’s consistent delivery of such dissenting voices counters its monolithic and reactionary reputation.

Abstract:
When Mustafa Kemal Atatürk became the first president of Turkey in 1923, he set about transforming his country into a secular republic where nationalism sanctified by science would reign supreme as the new religion. This book provides an in-depth look at the intellectual life of the Turkish Republic's founder. It frames him within the historical context of the turbulent age in which he lived, and explores the uneasy transition from the late Ottoman imperial order to the modern Turkish state through his life and ideas. The book takes readers from Atatürk's youth as a Muslim boy in the volatile ethnic cauldron of Macedonia, to his education in nonreligious and military schools, to his embrace of Turkish nationalism and the modernizing Young Turks movement. Who was this figure who sought glory as an ambitious young officer in World War I, defied the victorious Allies intent on partitioning the Turkish heartland, and defeated the last sultan? This book charts Atatürk's intellectual and ideological development at every stage of his life, demonstrating how he was profoundly influenced by the new ideas that were circulating in the sprawling Ottoman realm. It shows how Atatürk drew on a unique mix of scientism, materialism, social Darwinism, positivism, and other theories to fashion a grand utopian framework on which to build his new nation.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Michael Zev Gordon’s Into the Dark (2014). Michael Zev Gordon is a composer of consistency, rigour, and broad sympathies, now rightfully gaining wide recognition for his exceptional gifts. This unique and important work is packed with invention and sustains its length admirably. It typifies the polish, clarity, and fastidiousness of his writing. The piece celebrates a groundbreaking collaboration between the worlds of science, medicine, and music, in the form of a research study into consciousness under anaesthesia. There is no avoiding the fact that an exceptional singer is needed, but the challenge is surely a rewarding one. The flexible mezzo/contralto is frequently called upon to display security at both extremes of the range. The deepest notes, well below the stave, are used to especially telling effect. The higher tessitura, too, has to be well focused through some blazing high points, especially during the piece’s latter stages, where the singer can give rein to vocal opulence, once liberated from the tight controls and microscopic details that predominate earlier.

Watkin, Sara, and Andrew Vincent. "Specialty-Specific Interviews." In The Consultant Interview. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199594801.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is designed to provide a brief insight into the differences between specialties and how they approach the interview process. It should be read in conjunction with Chapters 4 and 6. The specialties covered are: • Anaesthesia • Emergency medicine • Medicine • Psychiatry • Obstetrics and gynaecology • Paediatrics and neonatal specialities • Pathology and laboratory-based specialities • Radiology • Surgery Each of these sections has been written by a guest author from within that specialty. Across the board, they are all experienced, senior clinicians with many years’ experience in interviewing for consultants. However, it is also important to remember that they are individuals and each individual has their own unique way of thinking too. We have done comparatively little editing and given relatively free rein to those individuals in deciding what’s important. Each was provided with the broad section titles for some consistency. The content is very much their own and we have left it largely untouched so that you may get a feeling for style, psychology and focus, accepting that they are also unique too. As a consequence, although the section structure is consistent, you will find a considerable variation in what authors have chosen to focus on. In each specialty, we have provided a perspective on the likely psychology of the individuals you may come across. This is written by us, not the guest authors, who we can’t expect to have sufficient understanding of psychological difference. However, what we have written must never be taken as gospel. There is no substitute for being a good detective and finding out exactly who is on your panel and exactly how they are wired as individuals. Dr Helga Becker, Consultant Anaesthetist, Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In terms of number of consultants, anaesthetics is often the single largest department in a Trust and so the interview panel will not be particularly representative of the department as a whole. Besides the usual suspects like Chief Executive and Medical Director, the panel will probably have the Clinical Director and maybe another consultant from the department.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the impact of central banks' unconventional monetary policies on sectors of unique and traditional alternative investments beyond the stock market. More specifically, authors examine how quantitative easing (QE) programs, imposed by the FED and the ECB during the financial crisis, affected the fine wine market and rare coins in comparison with real estate, commodities, and crude oil. The methodology used in this chapter includes multiple regression analysis. As dependent variables, the LVX 50 Index, the Rare Coin Values Index, the REIT Index, the CRB Commodity Index and the Crude Oil Futures Index, are used for each sector respectively. Our empirical analysis shows that the QE programs applied had different outcomes between our sample markets. Thus, investors should evaluate the signals associated with the announcements of prospective monetary policies in their attempt to achieve a sufficient portfolio diversification and to harvest superior returns at the same time.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how Russian conservativism in the reign of Alexander I was multifaceted, often in opposition to state policy, and far from united. But there was a common core among its various strands. Men such as Aleksandr Shishkov, Fyodor Rostopchin, Sergei Glinka, Aleksandr Sturdza, and Nikolai Karamzin fused reason and faith to support a form of enlightened autocracy unlimited by law but firmly bound by morality. They also shared a concern with creating a modern Russian culture and a strong state that would be able to unite the country and provide stability in the face of internal and external pressures. In these ways they set the tone for Russian conservatives of future generations.

Abstract:
Gupta discusses the concept of ethnicity through his study of the Sikh identity. He underlines the importance of context in the interpretation of culture. In the 1980s, Sikhism was seen as a religion that encouraged separatist doctrine. Communalism and ethnicity are the biggest enemies of fraternity and they are extremely dangerous because they rest primarily on passion. Gupta discussed the importance of the triadic framework for peace to reign. When the traid fails, it leads to misrecognition, which is a mutual phenomenon. The role of sociologists in a democracy lies in demolishing essentialist views of other cultures, whether they are based on religion, caste, or nation. India offers a unique diverse ground for testing social theories.

Unique for their near-exclusive focus on art world sitters, these are portraits in which the artist collaborated with their subjects to investigate an array of artistic identities, from conventional renderings of the artist as scholar and gentleman, to unexpected depictions of artists as men about town, failures, sell-outs and beggars. These are images that exceed portraiture’s usual purpose of documenting likeness and social status, instead seeking to comment on the modern Chinese artist’s engagement with a complex and demanding urban market and art world.

Abstract:
Present land use and tenure of a country is a result of the social norms and regulations. Land use manifests a country's priorities with implications on the economic development. Land tenure has implications on the investment decisions on land and hence efficient allocations of land. Sri Lanka, a country with a history of king's reign, colonial rule and then an elected government has its unique journey in the evolution of laws and regulations and institutions governing land and the resultant land use. This chapter chronicles the evolution of laws and regulations and institutions governing agricultural land and the resultant land use and tenure arrangements. At present, the governance of agricultural land is complex as it involves many regulations and many competing institutions.

Abstract:
Significant challenges exist for replicating osteochondral tissue due to the disparate, gradient nature of natural tissue in this region. The graded transition that exists in this region, moving from subchondral bone to hyaline cartilage at the joint surface, presents unique biological and mechanical challenges for tissue engineering. Past research identified a favorable pore distribution for 3D printed scaffolds. The objective of this research is to use that distribution and further investigate the effects of scaffold material selection and bioactive particle distribution on mechanical, biological, and physiological properties of 3D printed tissue engineered osteochondral scaffolds. Our results indicate that scaffolds constructed with a novel soy-based polymer outperform those constructed with ploy(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate (PEG-DA). This study also indicates that incorporating nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHA) into the soy resin scaffold further improves cellular performance. Additionally, the nHA can be integrated in a controlled fashion to affect only the osteogenic portion of the osteochondral construct.

Design requirements for nonmetallic piping systems are significantly different from those applicable to piping made of steel and other metals, and the development of rules for nonmetallic materials requires a unique set of expertise. While other piping standards have tried to address the use of nonmetallic materials in industrial piping, they do not provide adequate requirements to cover the service limitations, design, materials, fabrication, installation, fusing or joining, and quality control which are unique to nonmetallic piping systems. To address this gap, ASME assembled the Committee on Nonmetallic Pressure Piping Systems (NPPS) in 2011 to develop standard rules for the construction of nonmetallic pressure piping systems. Over the last 7 years, the NPPS Committee has developed three new standards which are scheduled to be published in 2018: ASME NM.1 Standard on Thermoplastic Piping, ASME NM.2 Standard on Glass Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting Resin Piping, and ASME NM.3 Standard on Nonmetallic Materials. These standards cover the design, manufacture, fabrication, installation, examination, testing, and inspection of thermoplastic and glass fiber reinforced thermosetting resin piping systems suitable for pressure applications. They will also cover specifications for nonmetallic materials for piping components including material design values and limits on the use of nonmetallic materials.

Abstract:
Cellular materials have unique thermal, acoustic, damping and energy absorbing properties that can be combined with their structural efficiency. Therefore, many kinds of cellular materials have been developed and tested as energy absorbing and damping materials. Particularly, closed cellular materials are thought to have many favorable properties and applications. In this study, a metallic closed cellular materials containing polymer was fabricated by the penetrating polymer into metal foam. The aluminum and stainless steel foams were selected for the metal foam and epoxy resin and polyurethane resin were selected for the penetrated polymer. The mechanical and damping properties of this material were measured. The results of the compressive tests show that this material has different stress-strain curves among the specimens that include different materials in the cells. Also, These results show that this material has high-energy absorption. The internal friction of this material was measured and the result shows that the internal friction of this material is larger than that of pure aluminum closed cellular material without any polymer and change with increasing of temperature.

Abstract:
Carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers have been used as nanofillers for high performance damping composite materials in recent years. The large specific area (1000 m2/g) and aspect ratio (>1000) of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers promote significant interfacial friction between carbon nanotubes/nanofibers and the polymer matrix. The high stiffness and strength of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers enlarge the differences in the strains of individual constituents of the composites, which causes much higher energy dissipation in the polymer matrix. However, adding small amount of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers will significant increase the viscosity of polymer resin, which makes the dispersion and resin flow through the porous fiber mats extremely difficult. In addition, the fiber mats will filter carbon nanotubes and nanofibers during liquid molding process such as Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM). A unique concept of manufacturing nanocomposites with carbon nanotube/nanofiber based nanopaper sheets for structural damping applications has recently been explored. This approach involves making carbon nanopaper sheet by the filtration of well-dispersed carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers under controlled processing conditions. Subsequently, carbon nanopaper sheets are integrated into composite laminates using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process. In this study, several nanocomposite plates were fabricated with carbon nanopaper sheet as surface layer. For the comparative study, the regular composite plates without carbon nanopaper sheet were also fabricated. To identify the damping characteristics of each specimen, the Frequency Response Function (FRF) was estimated by a pair of piezoceramic patches: one as an actuator to excite the specimen and the other as a sensor to detect the induced vibrations. From the FRF, the damping ratio of the specimen at each modal frequency of interests was calculated. The experimental results clearly show a significant improvement of damping properties of nanocomposites plates. This research demonstrates structural damping enhancement via carbon nanopaper sheets and provided basic understanding of the damping characteristics for the optimal design and fabrication of high performance damping composites, which have the potential to be used as structural components for many applications.

Abstract:
Self-folding structures have unique advantages such as reconfiguration capability during their usage. Such advantages can be beneficial for a wide variety of applications including biomedical and electronics products. However, how to fabricate and actuate self-folding structures is still an ongoing research topic. In the paper a simple fabrication approach based on a 3D printing process is presented for the fabrication of self-folding structures that can be actuated using a constrain-based thermo responsive mechanism. A self-folding structure fabricated by our method is an origami sheet with multiple layers. The middle layer of the origami sheet is a pre-strained polystyrene film, which can have a large shrinkage when exposing to heat. Both its upper and bottom surfaces are covered with desired patterns in cured plastic resin. A foldable hinge is achieved by using the cured resin to constrain the shrinkage of the film on one side while the other side of the film is exposed to the heating environment. A model of the related folding mechanism is developed. Based on it, a hinge structure design method is presented for a given folding angle. Various experiments are performed to verify the folding control of designed self-folding structures. Possible applications of the developed self-folding structures are also demonstrated and discussed.

Abstract:
Since carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have unique electronic and mechanical properties, there have been many efforts to develop CNTs-based electronic devices and sensors. The authors have also validated the possibility of a highly sensitive strain sensor using popular resin in which multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs) were dispersed uniformly. It is, however, indispensable for clarifying how to change the electronic state of a deformed CNT for assuring the stable performance of the sensor because the reported sensitivity has ranged widely. In this study, the relationship between the deformation characteristic of a CNT under strain and its electronic properties was analyzed. The analysis result obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the orbital hybridization was occurred when the maximum local dihedral angle exceeded 10–20° and 25–30° in GNRs and CNTs, respectively, which induced the band gap.
