Janelle Reinelt explores playwright Howard Brenton's return to Britain's national stages after almost a decade's absence, discussing recent productions that address the fraught relationship between religious belief and human conduct. Joshua Chambers-Letson contemplates the queer politics of failure in regard to Nao Bustamante's Hero, which challenges the value of “normality” via the possibility of a communal being-in-failure for queers, people of color, and other nonnormative subjects. Engaging South Africa's 2006 National Arts Festival, Daniel Larlham addresses the country's national transformations through its changing artistic landscape, newly opened to a variety of imaginative, discursive, and affective spaces in which a communal historical consciousness might develop.

Abstract:
‘Silent Voices/Forbidden Lives: Censorship and Performance’ was the topic of IFTR's annual conference held in Lisbon, Portugal, in July 2009. Introducing the theme of the conference, the organizers signalled the importance of censorship for Portugal and other countries with histories of governmental dictatorship, given the ways in which this has made an impact or left its mark on the cultural, social and political fabric of the nation. The first two articles in this issue, by Jean Graham-Jones and Paul Rae, arose out of papers presented at the Lisbon conference. Both authors open up the censorship debate to argue for more subtle accounts of how the term is conceptualized. In brief, both are mindful of the cautionary note sounded in an earlier TRI article on ‘the limits of censorship’ by Janelle Reinelt where she writes, ‘“Censorship” has become a common-sense catchword; since everyone knows what it means, merely to name it is to proclaim it.’

Chris Balme, having served as senior editor of TRI for three years, has passed over the editorship to me. I really want to thank him for the excellent job he has done during his period as editor, while I have been watching the action from the wings, waiting to step in. At the same time Elaine Aston from the University of Lancaster has joined me as the new assistant editor of the journal. As a person and as a scholar she makes a huge difference, and I am looking forward to working with her. This means that three years from now she will be taking over as the senior editor of TRI. Kristina Hagström Ståhl, a graduate student from UC Berkeley, finishing her dissertation as we were working on the final touches for this issue of TRI, has joined as editorial assistant and I am very pleased to work with her as well. Finally, I also want to thank Janelle Reinelt, IFTR president, and Brian Singleton, IFTR vice president for publications, for their trust and support.

Abstract:
We study the displacement of miscible fluids between two parallel plates, for different values of the Péclet number Pe and of the viscosity ratio M. The full Navier–Stokes problem is addressed. As an alternative to the conventional finite difference methods, we use the BGK lattice gas method, which is well suited to miscible fluids and allows us to incorporate molecular diffusion at the microscopic scale of the lattice. This numerical experiment leads to a symmetric concentration profile about the middle of the gap between the plates; its shape is determined as a function of the Péclet number and the viscosity ratio. At Pe of the order of 1, mixing involves diffusion and advection in the flow direction. At large Pe, the fluids do not mix and an interface between them can be defined. Moreover, above M∼10, the interface becomes a well-defined finger, the reduced width of which tends to λ∞=0.56 at large values of M. Assuming that miscible fluids at high Pe are similar to immiscible fluids at high capillary numbers, we find the analytical shape of that finger, using an extrapolation of the Reinelt–Saffman calculations for a Stokes immiscible flow. Surprisingly, the result is that our finger can be deduced from the famous Saffman–Taylor one, obtained in a potential flow, by a stretching in the flow direction by a factor of 2.12.

Full text
Abstract:
The rheology of highly concentrated monodisperse emulsions is studied by rigorous multidrop numerical simulations for three types of steady macroscopic flow, (i) simple shear ($\dot{{\it\gamma}}x_{2}$, 0 0), (ii) planar extension (PE) ($\dot{{\it\Gamma}}x_{1},-\dot{{\it\Gamma}}x_{2},0$) and (iii) mixed ($\dot{{\it\gamma}}x_{2}$, $\dot{{\it\gamma}}{\it\chi}x_{1}$, 0), where $\dot{{\it\gamma}}$ and $\dot{{\it\Gamma}}$ are the deformation rates, and ${\it\chi}\in (-1,1)$ is the flow parameter, in order to construct and validate a general constitutive model for emulsion flows with arbitrary kinematics. The algorithm is a development of the multipole-accelerated boundary-integral (BI) code of Zinchenko & Davis (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 455, 2002, pp. 21–62). It additionally incorporates periodic boundary conditions for (ii) and (iii) (based on the reproducible lattice dynamics of Kraynik–Reinelt for PE), control of surface overlapping, much more robust controllable surface triangulations for long-time simulations, and more efficient acceleration. The emulsion steady-state viscometric functions (shear viscosity and normal stress differences) for (i) and extensiometric functions (extensional viscosity and stress cross-difference) for (ii) are studied in the range of drop volume fractions $c=0.45{-}0.55$, drop-to-medium viscosity ratios ${\it\lambda}=0.25{-}10$ and various capillary numbers $\mathit{Ca}$, with 100–400 drops in a periodic cell and 2000–4000 boundary elements per drop. High surface resolution is important for all three flows at small $\mathit{Ca}$. Large system size and strains $\dot{{\it\gamma}}t$ of up to several thousand are imperative in some shear-flow simulations to identify the onset of phase transition to a partially ordered state, and evaluate (although still not precisely) the viscometric functions in this state. Below the phase transition point, the shear viscosity versus $\mathit{Ca}$ shows a kinked behaviour, with the local minimum most pronounced at ${\it\lambda}=1$ and $c=0.55$. The ${\it\lambda}=0.25$ emulsions flow in a partially ordered manner in a wide range of $\mathit{Ca}$ even when $c=0.45$. Increase of ${\it\lambda}$ to 3–10 shifts the onset of ordering to much smaller $\mathit{Ca}$, often outside the simulation range. In contrast to simple shear, phase transition is never observed in PE or mixed flow. A generalized five-parameter Oldroyd model with variable coefficients is fitted to our extensiometric and viscometric functions at arbitrary flow intensities (but outside the phase transition range). The model predictions compare very well with precise simulation results for strong mixed flows, ${\it\chi}=0.25$. Time-dependent PE flow is also considered. Ways to overcome the phase transition and drop breakup limitations on constitutive modelling are discussed.

Abstract:

Using techniques developed in Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra (2012), when each vertex has infinite contagious periods, we extend results on the epidemic curve in Barbour and Reinert (2013) from bounded degree graphs to general sparse random graphs with degrees having finite second moments as n → ∞, with an appropriate X2log+X condition. We also study the epidemic trail between the source and typical vertices in the graph.

Abstract:
In July 2006 Emmanuel Reinert warned of the danger of opium eradication in Afghanistan. While the world suffers a shortage in opioid painkillers, military operations to destroy poppy fields are wrecking lives and turning the Afghan people against NATO troops. Now six months later, the situation in Afghanistan is much worse. Thousands of farmers and their families are starving and support for the Taliban is growing stronger by the day. In his second report Emmanuel Reinert offers financial support to pilot opium licensing schemes in order to divert the tons of illicit opium headed for our streets.

Abstract:
Linguatula arctica, a newly described pentastomid species, is found in the nasal sinuses of the reindeer. It seems to cover the reindeer distribution. The prevalence in Norwegian reindeer herds is fairly high for an almost unknown parasite. L. arctica infects mostly calves. This led to the hypothesis that the reindeer mounts an immune response against the invader. The author discusses possible detrimental effects and proposes management efforts to control the parasite. Briefly, veterinary treatment is reviewed.
