Abstract:
AbstractThe paper argues for the viability and indispensibility of the so-called golden rule as a principle of moral reasoning. Drawing mostly on prior research by Hans Reiner an initial morphological analysis shows that the rule historically appears (and systematically has to appear) in three different, albeit irreducible forms: first as a rule of empathy, secondly as a rule of autonomy, finally as a rule of reciprocity. Pointing out and eliminating the ambivalences of its factual variants the paper then tries to reestablish the rule in its ethical ideality. The analysis Ieads to the conclusion that the golden rule is not and cannot be a principle of a genuinely Christian, but only and exclusively of a purely philosophical ethics.

Abstract:
In this paper we use a non-linear constitutive model for flowing granular materials developed by Massoudi [1] which not only considers the effect of volume fraction but also has a viscosity which is shear rate dependent. This model is a generalization of Reiner’s model [2] derived for wet sand. Specifically we study the simple shear flow of granular materials between two horizontal plates, with the lower plate fixed and the upper plate moving at a constant speed. Numerical solutions are presented for various dimensionless parameters.

In ASME 2013 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Implicit boundary method enables the use of background mesh to perform finite element analysis while using solid models to represent the geometry. This approach has been used in the past to model 2D and 3D structures. Thin plate or shell-like structures are more challenging to model. In this paper, the implicit boundary method is shown to be effective for plate elements modeled using Reissner-Mindlin plate theory. This plate element uses a mixed formulation and discrete collocation of shear stress field to avoid shear locking. The trial and test functions are constructed by utilizing approximate step functions such that the boundary conditions are guaranteed to be satisfied. The incompatibility of discrete collocation with implicit boundary approach is overcome by using irreducible weak form for computing the stiffness associated with essential boundary conditions. A family of Reissner-Mindlin plate elements is presented and evaluated in this paper using several benchmark problems to test their validity and robustness.

Full text
Abstract:
An improved Reissner-Mindlin theory for composite laminates without invoking ad hoc kinematic assumptions is constructed using the variational-asymptotic method. Instead of assuming a priori the distribution of three-dimensional displacements in terms of two-dimensional plate displacements as what is usually done in typical plate theories, an exact intrinsic formulation has been achieved by introducing unknown three-dimensional warping functions. Then the variational-asymptotic method is applied to systematically decouple the original three-dimensional problem into a one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and a two-dimensional plate analysis. The resulting theory is an equivalent single-layer Reissner-Mindlin theory with an excellent accuracy comparable to that of higher-order, layerwise theories. The present work is extended from the previous theory developed by the writer and his co-workers with two sizable contributions: (a) six more constants (33 in total) are introduced to allow maximum freedom to transform the asymptotically correct energy into a Reissner-Mindlin model; and (b) the semi-definite programming technique is used to seek the optimum Reissner-Mindlin model. Furthermore, it is proved the first time that the recovered three-dimensional quantities exactly satisfy the continuity conditions on the interface between different layers and traction boundary conditions on the bottom and top surfaces. It is also shown that that two of the equilibrium equations of three-dimensional elasticity can be satisfied asymptotically, and the third one can be satisfied approximately so that the difference between the Reissner-Mindlin model and the second order asymptotical energy can be minimized. Numerical examples are presented to compare with the exact solution as well as the classical lamination theory and first-order shear-deformation, demonstrating that the present theory has an excellent agreement with the exact solution.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the three dimensional flow of granular materials and a viscous fluid in a channel. We use Mixture Theory to treat this problem as a two-component system [1]: One component is the solid particles (granular materials), such as sand, coal particles or red blood cells; the solid particles are modeled as a generalized Reiner-Rivlin type fluid derived by Massoudi [2], which not only considers the effects of volume fraction but also has a viscosity which is shear rate dependent. The other component, the host fluid, is assumed to behave as a linear viscous fluid, such as water, oil or plasma. For the interaction forces, the effect of different hindrance functions for the drag force is studied; moreover a generalized form of the expression for the hindrance function is suggested. For studying this two-component system numerically, a three dimensional CFD solver based on OpenFOAM® has been developed. Applying this solver, a specific problem (blood flow) has been studied for which our numerical results and experimental data [3] show good agreement.

Abstract:
This paper addresses to static and dynamic problems of multilayered plate and also embedded piezoelectric layers by means of finite element methods (FEM). Formulation on the basis of Principle of Virtual Displacements (PVD) and Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT) are considered. A series of hierarchic, two-dimensional plate elements are presented within the “Unified Formulation” recently introduced by the first author. Finite element matrices are derived for static and dynamic problems of piezoelectric laminates. Numerical solutions are compared to available ones to assess mixed and classical finite elements in both case of Layer-Wise (LW) and Equivalent-Single-Layer (ESL) variable description. The superiority of RMVT applications with respect to classical ones based on Principle of Virtual Displacements (PVD) has been confirmed by the conducted numerical investigation.

Abstract:
A shear-locking free isoparametric three-node triangular finite element is considered for the study of frequency response of moderately thick and thin composite plates. The strain displacement relationship is based on Reissner-Mindlin plate theory that accounts for transverse shear deformations into the plate formulation to circumvent the shear locking effect. The element is developed with full integration scheme; hence the element remains kinematically stable. The performance of the element for the case of static load response using the shear correction terms to shear strain components applied to a composite plate has been studied. The natural frequencies and mode shapes in accordance with varying mode numbers, are deduced and the results are compared with the available analytical and finite element solutions in literature.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2016: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2016-56575.

Full text
Abstract:
The durability of highly loaded gas turbine blade is significantly impacted by high heat transfer. The heat transfer performance of the gas turbine endwall can be varied significantly due to the impacts of uncertainties in the manufacturing process and operation conditions. In this work, an uncertainty quantification (UQ) method is proposed by integrating generalized polynomial chaos expansions, non-intrusive spectral projection and Smolyak sparse grids. Then coupled with three dimensional (3D) Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solutions, an uncertainty quantification procedure is carried out for heat transfer performance of highly loaded blade endwall. Wherein, the effects of the variation of geometric parameters and operation conditions are taken into account. Specifically, the endwall heat transfer performance of a typical highly loaded turbine blade named Pack-B is numerically investigated. The turbulence intensity Tuinlet and Reynolds number Reinlet of inlet flow are considered as flow condition uncertainty parameters. As geometrical uncertainty parameters, the radius r and minimum angle α of blade root fillet are considered. These uncertainty factors have important influence on the secondary flow structure, resulting in significant variation of heat transfer performance of the endwall. Non-intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC) is used to build a surrogate to reduce the quantity of the time consuming CFD simulation. A total of 137 sparse-grid-based design-of-experiment computations were carried out to build the high-fidelity surrogate. Using above method, the probability density function of the Nusselt number ( Nu ) of the endwall is obtained. The overall variation of Nu can be more than 10% due to the effect of the uncertainty factors. Finally, the sensitivity analysis shows that Reinlet has the most important influence on heat transfer performance of the whole endwall and other uncertainty factors also have significant effect on heat transfer performance at some local regions of the endwall such as wake region and middle part of blade passage.

Abstract:
Free vibration of multilayered composite cylinder which volume fraction of fiber varies according to power law in longitudinal direction has been studied. Rule of mixture model and reverse of that are employed to represent elastic properties of this fibrous functionally graded composite. Strain-displacement relations employed are based on Reissner-Naghdi-Berry’s shell theory. The displacement finite element model of the governing equations of motion is derived by writing weak form of them. The Lagrangian shape functions for in-plane displacements and Hermitian shape functions for displacement in normal direction to the surface of mid-plane are utilized by defining a conformal quadrilateral element. The results show that by appropriate grading material properties of fiber in longitudinal direction the natural frequencies can be increased in comparison with traditional composite in which volume fraction of fiber does not vary.

Abstract:
According to the communis opinio, prince Kawab is a son of Cheops. This assumption is primarily based on G. A. Reisner’s conclusions about the location of mastabahs and queen’s pyramids in the East Field and on three relief fragments from mastabah G 7110/20, which W. S. Smith ingeniously assigned to a scene naming Kawab and his mother Meretites. Early after G. A. Reisner had published the first part of his view on the history of the royal family of the Fourth Dynasty, substantial critique was brought forward by W. Federn. Following the latter, Kawab should be considered a grandson of Sneferu because, apart from mastabah G 7110/20 in Gizah, another mastabah at Dahshur bears witness of him. Even though it is now safely determined that the two are neither one and the same person nor contemporaries, W. Federn’s review has been taken as a starting point for further critical investigation by some scholars who came to the conclusion that Kawab was rather a son of Sneferu.
