Keller, Thomas. Use of fibre reinforced polymers in bridge construction. Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed007.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of the present Structural Engineering Document, a state-of-the-art report, is to review the progress made worldwide in the use of fibre reinforced polymers as structural components in bridges until the end of the year 2000.
Due to their advantageous material properties such as high specific strength, a large tolerance for frost and de-icing salts and, furthermore, short installation times with minimum traffic interference, fibre reinforced polymers have matured to become valuable alternative building materials for bridge structures. Today, fibre reinforced polymers are manufactured industrially to semi-finished products and ccimplete structural components, which can be easily and quickly installed or erected on site.
Examples of semi-finished products and structural components available are flexible tension elements, profiles stiff in bending and sandwich panels. As tension elements, especially for the purpose of strengthening, strips and sheets are available, as weil as reinforcing bars for concrete reinforcement and prestressing members for internal prestressing or external use. Profiles are available for beams and columns, and sandwich constructions especially for bridge decks. During the manufacture of the structural components fibre-optic sensors for continuous monitoring can be integrated in the materials. Adhesives are being used more and more for joining components.
Fibre reinforced polymers have been used in bridge construction since the mid-1980s, mostly for the strengthening of existing structures, and increasingly since the mid-1990s as pilot projects for new structures. In the case of new structures, three basic types of applications can be distinguished: concrete reinforcement, new hybrid structures in combination with traditional construction materials, and all-composite applications, in which the new materials are used exclusively.
This Structural Engineering Document also includes application and research recommendations with particular reference to Switzerland.
This book is aimed at both students and practising engineers, working in the field of fibre reinforced polymers, bridge design, construction, repair and strengthening.

Abstract:
This chapter presents appropriation art as a seemingly paradoxical renunciation and reinforcement of artistic authority. It then turns to the established philosophical debate surrounding interpretive intentionalism in light of the 2008 lawsuit between photographer Patrick Cariou and the contemporary appropriation artist Richard Prince. This case illustrates the essential role that intentionalism plays in deciding copyright suits. It then considers the philosophical problems surrounding the legal status of appropriation art. A number of scholars have proposed ways for the courts to accommodate appropriation art without eroding copyright protections for authors. It considers some recent proposals and rejects them. It then argues that appropriation art should be considered derivative and hence presumptively unfair.

Abstract:
In conjunction with chapters 16 and 17, which described non-pharmacological approaches to pain management, this chapter reviews the available non-pharmacological approaches to substance use disorders (SUD). Specific subtopics include 12-Step programs and facilitation, motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, individual and group psychotherapies, contingency management, community reinforcement, family therapy, relapse management, and the terminal consideration of all therapies, termination (what is the duration of treatment)? Each subtopic is addressed in abstract rather than in comprehensive format, to allow the primary care provider to identify her level of interest and present level of understanding, and to inform further reading. The chapter concludes with a text box providing additional resources.

Abstract:
Smith returns to a sacramentalist view, seeing ordinances as indispensable. Temples are central to this practice. Though often employed by Smith and his contemporaries in the generic sense to denote God’s laws and statutes as well as divinely prescribed rites and ceremonies, ordinances gradually came to signify for Mormons what other Christians would call sacraments. Sacraments (ordinances) provide moral reinforcement, are a counter to cosmic entropy, and themselves constitute eternal relationships, which are the essence of Mormonism’s heaven. Believing in a universal salvation requires the administration of vicarious ordinances, or temple work “for the dead.” Like Catholics, the membrane between the living and dead is therefore permeable for Mormons. This explains Mormonism’s genealogical program. The temple is the locus of Mormon sacramentalism, which has echoes of Masonic practice, but in a radically different framework.

Abstract:
Mainly as a result of the nature of criminal procedure in the Netherlands, which until recently could be characterized as a modern moderate inquisitorial system, the fitness-to- plead principle has been rather underdeveloped here. This chapter analyses how the European Convention on Human Rights, EU Directives, and the increase of adversarial elements in an originally inquisitorial criminal justice system are now catalysing the fitness-to-plead principle. Fourteen recommendations will be provided for what is considered a necessary reinforcement of the legal position of defendants who possess insufficient abilities to adequately participate during criminal proceedings—both preliminary investigation and trial—or who are even unfit to stand trial. The recommendations are based on a detailed analyses of criminal procedure law of the Netherlands, case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and several EU Directives that are relevant for the fitness to plead principle..

Powers, Melinda. Representing ‘Woman’ in Split Britches’ Honey I’m Home, the F-RTC’s Oedipus Rex XX/XY, and Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flynn’s Lysistrata Jones. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777359.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uses case studies from both comedy and tragedy, including Split Britches’ Honey I’m Home: The Alcestis Story (1989), the Faux-Real Theatre Company’s Oedipus Rex XX/XY (2012), and Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flynn’s Lysistrata Jones (2011), to explore the extent to which costuming and casting choices may reinforce or challenge the male-invented, male-performed idea of ‘Woman’ performed on the ancient stage. It argues that the employment of women actors in a play written by and for men does not preclude a feminist critique, for Split Britches’ and Faux-Real’s performances have used feminist performance techniques and cross-gendered casting to challenge the gender binary of male/female. However, in some cases, such as Lysistrata Jones, reperforming Greek drama may inadvertently result in the reinforcement of negative depictions of women and essentialist ideas that attach sex (the physical body) to gender (the cultural performance of that body).

Abstract:
A defining characteristic of post-financial crisis regulatory reforms is the focus on reinforcing individual accountability. The reforms aim to bridge a perceived ‘evidentiary gap’ in situations where there is a case for placing personal responsibility on individuals within financial institutions in relation to misconduct manifested within their area of responsibility, but due to the structural and operational complexities of the institution, an enforcement action/prosecution is not likely to succeed. This chapter summarises the most salient of ‘individual accountability’-focused reforms, either under consideration or fully/partially implemented. This includes a new, enhanced, framework for the assessment of individuals’ fitness and propriety and the internal (and/or regulatory) approval of them to perform certain roles; subtle changes to the enforcement approach of the Financial Conduct Authority; the introduction of new criminal offences for misconduct in senior office and the facilitation of financial crimes; and the reinforcement of whistleblowing procedures within firms.

Abstract:
A Step-By-Step Guide for Coaching Classroom Teachers in Evidence-Based Interventions highlights the consultation strategies used by the coaches on the PATHS to PAX Project with the Johns Hopkins Center for Prevention and Early Intervention working with classroom teachers in Baltimore City public schools. The PATHS to PAX Project is the integration of two of the most widely disseminated, evidence-based, universal school-based preventive interventions: the PATHS curriculum and the PAX Good Behavior Game, or PAX GBG. This book reviews the Universal Coaching Model and the Indicated Coaching Model for supporting teacher implementation, including establishing positive coach–teacher relationships as well as coaching strategies that reflect core principles of behavior change, such as modeling, reinforcement, and performance feedback. Also presented are lessons learned and real-life case examples from coaches working with classroom teachers, and strategies for addressing coaching challenges and barriers. The selection, training, and supervision of coaches are discussed, and more than 30 handouts are included in the Appendix for coaches to adapt and use in their work with classroom teachers.

Abstract:
All books in this flagship series contain carefully selected substantial extracts from key cases, legislation, and academic debate, providing able students with a stand-alone resource. This chapter reviews EU citizenship law. It considers the rights of free movement and residence of EU citizens, political rights of citizenship, and Directive 2004/38 on the rights of free movement and residence for EU citizens and their families. The status of EU citizenship created by EU law has been criticized on various grounds, including the thinness of the rights created and their economic focus, the conditions to which they are subject, the reinforcement of the distinction between third-country nationals and EU nationals, the limited impact of the new electoral rights, and the reluctant pace of implementation. On the other hand, the legal rights of citizenship have been expanded by the European Court of Justice, even in the face of vocal Member State opposition. The case law in this area continues to develop and the chapter provides a considered evaluation of this difficult body of law.
