Abstract:
Observing actions made by others activates the cortical circuits responsible for the planning and execution of those same actions. This observation–execution matching system (mirror-neuron system) is thought to play an important role in the understanding of actions made by others. In an fMRI experiment, we tested whether this system also becomes active during the processing of action-related sentences. Participants listened to sentences describing actions performed with the mouth, the hand, or the leg. Abstract sentences of comparable syntactic structure were used as control stimuli. The resul

A previous study on ideomotor action control showed that predictable action effects in the agent’s environment influenced how an action is carried out. If participants were required to perform a forceful keypress, they exerted more force when these actions would produce a quiet compared to a loud tone, and this observation suggests that anticipated proprioceptive and auditory action effects are integrated with each other during action planning and control. In light of the typically weak influence of body-related effect found in recent work, we aimed to extend this pattern of results to the int

All object-related actions are complex. Even the “simplest” of reach to grasp movements requires finely honed coordination of the muscles of the arm, hand, and fingers; is dependent upon exquisitely tuned feedforward and feedback mechanisms for motor control; is honed by learning; and is influenced by such cognitive factors as task goals. In this sense, then, the title of this Symposium, Complex Object-Related Actions, contains a redundancy. It is also true, however, that (as compared with, say, memory, language, executive function, attention, and spatial skills) the study of skilled action ha

Research into glycopeptide antibiotics is of great importance because these therapies offer a last resort in the treatment of lethal, hospital-acquired infections. Particularly desirable are understandings of both the co-operativity involved in the mode of action of vancomycin-group antibiotics and the pathways by which they are biosynthesised. Chapter 2 presents evidence for the context-dependency of carboxylic acid dimerisation and discusses the implications of the binding of glycopeptide antibiotics to the cell walls of infectious bacteria. The 5-nitrothiazole, nitazoxanide, is a novel compound with a broad spectrum of activity; effective against anaerobic/microaerophilic intestinal protozoa and bacteria. The mechanism of nitazoxanide's anthelmintic activity is unknown. This study examined the mode of action of nitazoxanide and analogues against nematodes, trematodes and cestodes. Caenorhabditis elegans, a free living nematode, was used as a model. Nitazoxanide was found to exert a transient spastic paralytic effect, particularly at the posterior end of the nematode, with 50% effect at 4.62µM. This effect is similar to that of le

The exact mode of action of these herbicides has not yet been clearly established. Experiments with the alga Scenedesmus obliquus indicate that the role of photosynthetic electron transport is principally to generate the oxygen required for NDPE toxicity, rather than having a more direct involvement. Understanding who evacuates and who does not has been one of the cornerstones of research on the pre-impact phase of both natural and technological hazards. Its history is rich in descriptive illustrations focusing on lists of characteristics of those who flee to safety. Early models of evacuation focused almost exclusively on the relationship between whether warnings were heard and ultimately believed and evacuation behavior. How people came to believe these warnings and even how they interpreted the warnings were not incorporated. In fact, the individual seemed almost removed from the pictur
