Abstract:
Building a good relationship in social work is the most central part of the work. For a new practitioner it’s clearly an important thing, but it seems harder than it looks. This study examines the experiences of newly examined social workers in relationships with clients in Sweden and internationally. The aim of this study is to find out their experiences and how they feel when they in practice try to build a relationship with a client. It’s also an interest to find out if they feel that their education has prepared them well for the challenge and also their opinion about the content of their education. Systematic review was conducted for this paper and the result clearly showed that newly examined social workers felt unprepared and insecure for the many challenges for building a relationship with a client. Their opinions about the educational content was a wish for more practical exercises and more knowledge about communication skills, because it was clearly that they were lacking practical skills. The result also showed the newly examined social workers appreciation when they actually did have practical education. The practical exercises made them feel more confident and secure. This is a global matter regarding social work that needs to be further investigated in order to increase the quality for both newly examined social workers and clients.

Hedayati, Mahsa. "Low Carbon Architecture: New Approach Toward Sustainability in Relation to Existing Buildings." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99968.

Full text
Abstract:
The built environment puts the greatest pressure on the natural environment out of all human activities, so it has a fundamental obligation to be environmentally sustainable. Carbon dioxide (CO2) or carbon emissions is a significant greenhouse gas that is inevitably associated with energy use when energy is produced via the combustion of fuels. Total life cycle energy, embodied and operational energy over a building's lifetime, creates significant environmental impacts through the production of CO2. By keeping and reusing existing and historic buildings rather than discarding them and building new, the embodied energy, or the energy that is locked up, can help to mitigate future damage. These buildings already exist, which indicates that the energy consumed to build them has been applied and the carbon associated with their construction has been released. The greenest buildings are ones that are already built. They are inherently more sustainable than any new buildings even with green and zero net energy systems and can be retrofitted to become more energy efficient. To demonstrate this thesis specifically, a design project engages with an abandoned late nineteenth-century bank building in Philadelphia and transforms it into a high-performance building that is prepared for long-term use. For the immediate next use, the project creates a work environment and a new vertical expansion of residential units. The preservation field always confronts the challenge of bridging the gap between embodied energy and operational energy. In the abandoned bank, there are some aspects of this building that are near permanent and define its character, such as brick walls with masonry ornament, two bank vaults, Wissahickon Schist foundation wall, and ceiling trusses. This thesis explores new approaches to leverage the embodied energy of the permanent parts of the abandoned bank and transform it into a high-performance building. A lot of energy of the abandoned bank, the building's material, and thermal mass is still actively performing. The building's envelope, the thick masonry wall, provides a moderately good insulating effect that will temper the indoor air that also preserves its historical character both inside and outside. The embodied energy of the building's envelope is leveraged by pairing it with localized heating and cooling using a radiation and conduction system. Other approaches that increase energy performance in the existing building, include the use of phase-change material for cooling the process water, solar hot water, creating drinking water via a solar still in the skylight, and distilled water from radiant cooling surfaces. In the new construction, a thermal switch facade and double-skin facade for the residential units are proposed, along with providing flexible space with thick mobile interior wall units.

Global warming as a problem of the twenty-first-century increase concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human actions like burning fossil fuels. The built environment puts the greatest pressure on the natural environment of all industrial parts, and it has a fundamental role to manage the environment sustainably. Total life cycle energy, embodied and operational energy over the lifetime of the buildings, creates significant environmental impacts through the production of CO2. Embodied energy is the whole amount of energy applied to extract the raw materials, manufacture, transport, install, and use the product across its life cycle. Assessments of the embodied energy of historic and existing buildings are helping to mitigate future damage to resources. These buildings already exist, which indicates that the energy consumed to build them has been applied and the carbon associated with their construction has been released. The greenest buildings are ones that are already built. They are inherently sustainable and can be retrofitted to become more energy efficient. Specifically, this design engages with an abandoned late nineteenth-century bank building in Philadelphia and transforms it into a high-performance building that is prepared for long-term use. For the immediate next use, the project creates a work environment and in a new vertical expansion, residential units. In the abandoned bank, there are some aspects of this building that are near-permanent and define its characters, such as brick walls with masonry ornament, two bank vaults, Wissahickon Schist wall, and ceiling trusses. This thesis explores the new approaches to leverage the embodied energy of the permanent parts of the abandoned bank and transform it into a high-performance building. This is achieved through various means such as providing localized heating and cooling by using a radiation and conduction system, the use of phase-change material for cooling the process water, solar hot water, creating drinking water via a solar still in the skylight and distilled water from radiant cooling surfaces. In the new construction, a thermal switch facade and double-skin facade for the residential units are proposed, along with providing flexible space with thick mobile interior wall units.

Malusa, James Rudolph. "The phylogeny and water relations of pinyon pines in relation to the vicariance biogeography of the American southwest." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/191149.

Full text
Abstract:
Axelrod (1958) suggested that the late Tertiary shift in regional climate -- the elimination of summer rains -- had a profound influence on the evolution of biotic provinces in the American southwest. In particular, the taxa endemic to biotic provinces characterized by summer drought, e.g., the Mojave Desert, should be derived from ancestors that likely inhabited regions of summer rain, e.g., the Chihuahuan Desert. Further, the derived features of summer-drought taxa should be related to water stress. I examined Axelrod's thesis, using a combination of phylogenetic systematics, physiological ecology, and vicariance biogeography. The first chapter is a cladistic study of the pinyon pines, 13 taxa of small trees that range from the summer-wet regions of Mexico to the summer drought regions of Nevada and California. A parsimony analysis using twenty morphological characters showed that the most recently derived pinyons are from regions of summer drought. The "summer-drought" taxa are characterized by relatively few needles per fascicle. Because fewer needles per fascicle results in a reduction in the needle surface-to-volume ratio, Haller (1965) hypothesized that fewer needles in pines is an adaptation to reduce transpirational water loss. The second chapter reports on a two year study of the xylem pressure potentials of single- and double-needled fascicles of hybrid pinyons in central Arizona. The results showed no significant differences between single- and double-needles. I concluded that either needle morphology does not effect water relations, or that the relatively high precipitation during the study did not allow significant water stress to occur. The third chapter uses the methods of vicariance biogeography to search for a common pattern of relationship between southwestern biotic provinces, as indicated by the relationships of their endemic taxa. Using a biogeographic parsimony analysis, I compared the area cladograms of six taxa -- junipers, pinyon pines, the composite Palafoxia, hedgehog cactus, desert tortoises, and gecko lizards. The most parsimonious area cladogram supports Axelrod's (1958) hypothesis, but also shows that some taxa, notably the junipers, support other patterns of area relationships, e.g., summer-drought primitive. I suggest that there is no single pattern of area relationships because of the effects of the Pleistocene (including dispersal and extinction) and vicariance events other than the Tertiary climatic change, e.g., the separation of the Baja peninsula from mainland Mexico during the Miocene.

Vetrivel, Iyanar. "Exploring new applications of a structural alphabet in protein structure analyses." Thesis, Nantes, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017NANT1017/document.

Abstract:
Structural motifs found in protein structures. They help in approximating protein structure as a 1D string with minimal loss of structural information. Here I have employed a widely used structural alphabet called Protein Blocks (PB) for various applications like predicting, comparing and analyzing protein structures. PBs were used to study the structural variations in proteins with identical primary structure and also during the course of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results from these analyses were summarized in the form of substitution matrices and showed striking similarities to previously established matrices for homologous proteins and NMR ensembles. I improved kPRED, a knowledge-based prediction of protein backbone in terms of PBs, by taking into consideration the neighboring local structures. The new version of the algorithm also privileges structural information from homologous proteins when available reaching an average accuracy of 66.3% on a benchmark dataset. The scope of the PENTAdb database has been expanded to cover the entire protein structure space in an automated manner. I show that the effect of this 950% increase in the contents of PENTAdb improves our understanding of the sequence-structure relationship at the pentapeptide level. I also used PB-ALIGN, a fast and efficient protein structure comparison tool, to compare all protein structures in PDB in an all-vs-all manner and to investigate PB-based structural similarities. This generated a huge collection of alignment data and I discuss its use for functional annotation and identification of possible evolutionary relationships

Abstract:
This essay addresses the issue of stress by income earners in Sweden 18-64 years old and any possible relationship to their social ties and the individualization  process. The data were collected through a questionnaire, sent out to about 185 working men and women. The results showed a relationship between fewer social ties in everyday life and perceived stress of the individual. The result also showed a relationship between higher degree of individualization and stress. Both of these correlations is confirmed by previous research on the concept of work-life and theory of the new individualism. One of the most interesting results the study showed was that there was none relationship with gender and perceived stress in the individual. The results contradicts previous studies and research which is interesting for future studies.

Abstract:
The increased spread in the location of value added coupled with the growing impetus for new forms of bilateral integration are re-shaping international economic activity. The world is becoming more regional and more fragmented but little empirical work has been dedicated to examining the nature of the links between these processes. This thesis aims to fill this gap in the literature. The primary aim of the first essay of this thesis is to extend current indicators of international production so that the bilateral degree of vertical specialisation can be captured. This has been one of the major hurdles in examining the links between vertical specialisation and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). The comparative static analysis of this first essay reveals that there appears to be a high incidence of regional value chain activity and this motivates the aims of the second essay. It attempts to isolate the impact of an FTA on these flows through a theoretically derived gravity model of input trade. The results suggest that an FTA increases the use of intermediate inputs that are part of a bilateral value chain by 65%. Moreover, the results identify the presence of ‘magnification' which implies that this type of trade is also more responsive to changes in trade costs and income variables. The third essay then looks at how the changing nature of trade affects the formation of new FTAs. It suggests that the propagation of international production alters the political economy dynamics of countries towards favouring further liberalisation. It also identifies regulatory quality and a growing FTA ‘contagion' as determinants of new FTAs.

Muutuki, Joseph Mwasi. "Covenant in relation to justice and righteousness in Isaiah 42:1-9." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80220.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on covenant in relation to justice and righteousness in Isaiah 42:1-9. The main purpose of the study is to grapple with the idea of whether the Old Testament scholarly research on covenant is relevant for the theological-ethical understanding of covenant amongst African believing communities in general and in particular the Kamba community of Kenya. The research employs the socio-rhetorical approach, a method used to explore textures in a multi-dimensional way. In applying Robbins‘ (1996a, 1996b) textual analysis to the text of Isaiah 42:1-9, both the intra and intertextures are examined in order to gain the narrator‘s rhetorical strategy. It is possible to demonstrate that the mission of the Servant of the Lord was to establish justice and righteousness on earth. We show these terms are relational and ethical in nature. Justice restores damaged relationships in order for a community to have peace with itself. Righteousness on the other hand governs moral relationships and demands each member of the community acts right. These demands are required in order to regulate a cohesive social and cultural community that takes each other‘s social needs into account. Moreover, we show through intertexture in chapter three that texts reconfigure themselves either explicitly or implicitly. It is shown that three concepts, justice, righteousness and covenant exhibit moral characteristics when used together. Within covenant framework they have to do with taking care of the needs of the oppressed. Furthermore, in chapter four through social and cultural texture we show how the Israelites and Judah later are unable to fulfill their obligations to the poor because of the moral decay, which affected all spheres of their life. The Servant of YHWH is promised to usher in a new era of social justice. Additionally, in chapter five it is shown that the ideological texture highlights God‘s theological viewpoint characterized by the tension between the two covenants. We have attempted to show from Isaiah 42:1-9 that the theological-ethical understanding of covenant accommodates the Akamba covenant.

Ascarrunz, Julio. "The national-departamental relation in Bolivia: a multilevel approach to the country’s new political arena." Politai, 2015. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/91596.

Full text
Abstract:
This article focuses on party competition in Bolivia from a multilevel approach with department (intermediate level) as the territorial unit of analysis from 2005 to 2015. The objective is to demonstrate the (in)congruence of an institutional level overlooked by the literature on multilevel studies, for which two indices of measurement are used: Summary Measure of Congruence (Gibson and Suarez-Cao 2010) in a one version and Dissimilarity Index (Johnston 1980) in two versions, nationally aggregated and departmentally disaggregated, with voting data from all competing parties (DISa) and only from those with double competition (DISb). The argument handled is that if an institutional level is important enough to be introduced to the electoral framework of a country, it should also be important enough for academic interest, especially in their relation with the rest of the system. From this, the study concluded that the importance of this institutional level depends on the degree of autonomy it has and the interest of the partisan actors and regional elites.

In New South Wales, Australia, wobbegong sharks (Orectolobidae) have been commercially targetted by the Ocean Trap and Line Fishery since 1991. A catch decrease of ca. 50% in a decade lead to concern over the sustainability of the fishery and to wobbegongs being listed as vulnerable in NSW under the World Conservation Union Red List assessment. The aim of this research was to investigate wobbegong biology and ecology in relation to its fishery to provide essential data and information for sustainable management of the woggegong fishery. Biological data was obtained from 904 wobbegongs collected from commercial fishing boats, using setlines and lobset pots and by scuba diving. previously two species of wobbegongs were known to occur in NSW: the spotted wobbegong (Orectolobus maculatus) and the ornate wobbegong (O. ornatus). This study discovered a new species (O. halei) described as a subspecies by Whitley (1940), but which had been syonymised with O> ornatus due to a lack of taxonomic investigation.

Various data collection methods( survey,i nterviews,a nd observationsa) re employed to provide the empirical evidence for describing the implementation process. This study reports on the initial stages of policy implementation, focusing on the activities that take place and the role of individuals involved in these activities. This thesis argues that the incorporation of ICT in education depends not only on the implementers but also on the wider education system. As technologyc hangesra pidly, its institutionalizationi n an educationasl ystem which is hard to change becomes problematic. While technological evolution can be characterized one of the driving forces behind transforming education, by providing student-centred learning, anywhere/ any-time access to knowledge, and new teaching and learning methods, the education system appears to be bureaucratic and as such, it does not allow the potential of ICT tools to revolutionize education. It was found that during the first stages of implementation, only incremental changes were made, based on short-term goals and easily measurable objectives. Institutionalization however, requires long-term processesa nd transformationacl hanges. The study argues that system characteristics, and some features (e. g. principal's leadership style, champions' qualities) of individuals who are involved in implementation have a stronger influence than factors such as the socio-economic status of the student population, or the location of the school (urban/rural). However, the findings suggest that a combination of the above factors influences implementation process, and thus a holistic approach to exploring implementation is appropriate.

Debruyne, Christine Anne. "Fluctuating asymmetry and body morphology in relation to population bottlenecks of introduced birds in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Biological Sciences, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3326.

Full text
Abstract:
The introduction of exotic bird species to New Zealand (NZ) from the United Kingdom (UK) over 100 years ago unintentionally created an ideal study system to examine potential changes in developmental stability due to bottleneck effects. In this study I measured fluctuating asymmetry (FA; random deviations from symmetry between bilaterally symmetrical traits) in 13 species of introduced birds in NZ. FA has been used for conservation purposes as an early warning system of increased developmental instability (DI; the inability to cope with random genetic or environmental perturbations during development). I evaluated DI using FA in several anatomical external and internal morphological traits, and compared differences in body morphology between introduced and source populations in relation to the bottleneck size. I also examined FA in nestlings in two closely related introduced species that passed through two different-sized population bottlenecks. Differences in FA in relation to bottleneck severity were only observed in external traits. FA in external traits in some NZ populations differed from their UK counterparts, but it was in the opposite direction than predicted. FA in external traits varied significantly across NZ populations of introduced species - the most severe bottlenecks species exhibited higher levels of FA than species that passed through larger bottlenecks. There were no patterns in FA and bottleneck size for skeletal traits, most likely due to differences in environmental and genetic stressors resulting in species- and characterspecific FA relationships. Nestling FA was the same for both species, despite the large difference in bottleneck size. FA did decrease over the nestling period, although not at the same rate for each trait, most likely due to the differing costs of development, functional importance, and other environmental stressors that might influence FA in each trait differently. Overall changes in body morphology occurred in four species introduced to NZ, and all species exhibited some changes in trait morphology but were not related to bottleneck size. Finally, the proportion of deformities (deviations from normal phenotype) was higher in NZ than in UK suggesting passing through a bottleneck increased the probability of abnormalities. Although the associations between FA, body morphology and bottleneck severity are complex, my results confirm that measures of morphology have the potential of being useful indicators of DI in the management of endangered species.

Thom, Katey. "Doing ecstasy in Christchurch: Ecstasy users' experiences in relation to drug regulation strategies in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Sociology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6668.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between ecstasy users' experiences in a variety of settings and drug regulation strategies in New Zealand. Fieldwork based, it presents the practices and knowledge utilised by a set of users 'doing ecstasy' in Christchurch. The research aims to both extend the sociological literature on ecstasy consumption and produce an analysis that could contribute to the development of harm reduction strategies in New Zealand. It accomplishes this primarily through interviews in which ten Christchurch users reflect on their experiences with ecstasy. This study is supplemented with participant observation within a number of settings in which ecstasy is consumed and quantitative analysis of forty questionnaires distributed through the social networks of those interviewed. This study contributes to the body of knowledge in the field of sociological drug research and harm reduction policy through its exploration of three themes, production, fluidity and control. I argue that what ecstasy 'does' is neither completely socially constructed nor the direct consequence of the drugs' pharmacology. Instead, I demonstrate that experiences of ecstasy are produced and emerge as an effect of users' employment of specific practices and knowledge. From this perspective, users both 'make' and 'let' the effects of ecstasy occur. Users' practices and knowledge are seen as fluid with respect to time, space, people and place. Finally, users' strategies for controlling and managing their negative experiences of ecstasy are discussed. This thesis demonstrates that users' experiences, practices and knowledges of ecstasy are constantly in flux, and considers the implications of this fluidity for harm reduction policy. Attention is directed towards local practices in specific settings and the relevance of locality and spatiality for drug-related harm. I conclude that harm reduction with respect to ecstasy demands a range of strategies by multiply positioned groups and individual actors. I argue that further detailed qualitative research into users' experiences of ecstasy would be beneficial in the development of harm reduction strategies in New Zealand.

Abstract:
This thesis evaluated a new speech rhythm measure, the Lexical Judgement Task (LJT), by conducting a series of cross-sectional studies. It was examined whether the LJT could be used with children from different age groups, whether associations between speech rhythm sensitivity, phonological awareness and reading skills could be observed and whether speech rhythm sensitivity could predict reading skills cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Study 1 piloted the LJT with 5- to 9-year-old children and assessed the relationship between poor and good readers‟ speech rhythm sensitivity and their reading skills. Analyses showed that poor readers performed lower on the task compared to good readers, indicating that reduced stress sensitivity was related to lower reading proficiency. Examination of the task indicated potential fatigue effects, thus the task was shortened, which resulted in a 12-item tasks that was used through the remainder of the studies. Children between 4- and 11-years old were assessed in three following studies and results showed differential associations between stress sensitivity and reading (related) skills; indicating an involvement of maturation in stress sensitivity‟s development but also highlighting that stress sensitivity is involved in reading skills differently across varying ages. The final study in this thesis examined the longitudinal effect of stress sensitivity on reading skills and it was found that stress sensitivity was not able to account for growth in reading skills, independently from vocabulary or phonological processing skills; although concurrently unique variance in reading skills was accountable to stress sensitivity. Overall, this thesis highlights the importance of stress sensitivity in children‟s reading development, offers supporting evidence for previously found associations between this skills and reading abilities and demonstrates the need to incorporate speech rhythm sensitivity in theoretical reading development models.

Clement, Deanna Marie, and n/a. "Distribution of Hectors dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori) in relation to oceanographic features." University of Otago. Department of Zoology, 2006. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20070221.122411.

Full text
Abstract:
Hectors dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori) is an endangered coastal species endemic to New Zealand. Their distribution, like other marine organisms, is intertwined with the dynamics of their local habitats, and at a larger scale, the coastal waters around New Zealand. The main purpose of this thesis was to identify specific habitat requirements of this rare dolphin. Hectors dolphin distribution around the South Island was quantified along several temporal and spatial scales. Large-scale density analyses of abundance surveys found over half of the South Islands current population occurred within only three main regions. Two of these strongholds are along the west coast and the third is located around Banks Peninsula on the east coast. Smaller-scale analyses at Banks Peninsula found the majority of the dolphin community was preferentially using core regions within the marine mammal sanctuary. Monthly surveys showed that in summer and autumn statistically more dolphins occurred within inshore regions ([less than or equal to]one kilometre), spread throughout the surveyed coastline. From May through winter, dolphin densities rapidly declined. Remaining dolphins were significantly clumped in more offshore waters of eastern regions. The lowest encounter rates occurred between August and September. Certain 'hotspots' consistently had higher dolphin densities throughout the study period while others were preferred seasonally. To address habitat preferences, surveys simultaneously collected oceanographic samples using a CTD profiler. In general, physical variables of the Peninsulas eastern and southeastern waters varied less, despite being regularly exposed to upwellings and the varied presence of sub-tropical waters. Semi-sheltered bays and shallow inshore waters were highly variable and more susceptible to spatially discrete influences, such as localised river outflows and exchange events. Several hydrographic features were seasonally predictable due to their dependence on climate. The stratification and location of the two dominant water masses (neritic and sub-tropical) accounted for over half of the temporal and spatial variability observed in oceanographic data. Possible relationships between oceanographic features and aggregations of dolphins within Banks Peninsula were examined using global regression and a spatial technique known as geographical weighted regression (GWR). GWR models out-performed corresponding global models, despite differences in degrees of freedom and increased model complexity. GWR results found relationships varied over localised scales that were concealed by global methods. Monthly GWR models suggested the seasonal presence and strength of local oceanographic fronts influenced dolphin distribution. Dolphin aggregations coincided with the steepest gradients between water masses along eastern regions of the Peninsula, and strong exchange events along the edges of the study area. The continued survival of this endangered species is contingent on its protection. Long-term monitoring programmes are needed for the three main strongholds identified in this study. The occurrence of Hectors dolphin 'hotspots' along frontal zones within Banks Peninsula also suggests alternative and increased protection strategies are needed for this sanctuary to be effective. In light of this thesis findings and based on marine protection research, future sanctuaries need to consider why Hectors dolphins are preferentially using particular regions and how their association with certain oceanographic features can help make informed decisions on more appropriate protected areas.

Roodt, Jean-Pierre. "Investigating the manufacturing of consent and democratic resistance through legacy and new media, in relation to fracking." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3665.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation concerns the extent to which the propaganda model advanced by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman in their Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is still applicable to the current media ecosystem, where both legacy and new media converge, especially given the emergence of global democratic resistance both to the excesses of neoliberalism in general, and to the problems associated with shale gas mining through hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) in particular. In this regard, firstly, the tensions between the views of seminal propaganda theorists and of critical theorists opposed to propaganda will be thematized in relation to Chomsky and Herman’s propaganda model, through which they sought to account for the negative impact of neoliberalism on journalistic freedom. Secondly, the primary features of neoliberalism will be considered in relation to the advent of the Internet, which has helped spread laissez-faire capitalism globally, both through integrating financial markets and augmenting consumerism, and through facilitating new practises of consent engineering via digital forms of censorship and surveillance. Thirdly, the correlative emergence around the world of digital democratic resistance on the part of new social movements and through both new and legacy media means, to the excesses of neoliberalism in general, will be investigated. Fourthly, the corporate underpinning of fracking in the United States will be explored, along with the media strategy by which anti-fracking groups – following Vera Scroggins’s activism – have contested government endorsement of such resource extraction. Fifthly, the resonances/dissonances between the media strategies of the American anti-fracking movement and the South African anti-fracking movement – most notably the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG) – along with the different contexts out of which they emerged and their respective efficacy, will be examined. Finally, some potential deficits in the TKAG media strategy will be identified, and appropriate recommendations will be made.

Oliver, Robert Craig. "A geotechnical characterisation of volcanic soils in relation to coastal landsliding on the Maungatapu Peninsula, Tauranga, New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geological Sciences, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6667.

Full text
Abstract:
Maungatapu Peninsula is a northeast trending peninsula located within the Tauranga Basin covering an area of 1.6km². Maungatapu is underlain by a sequence of volcanic tephras, ashes and fluvial deposits derived both locally and from the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In late May 1995 three landslides occurred at 83, 85 and 89 Te Hono Street, and again in late December 1995 at 330 Maungatapu Road. The purpose of this study was to carry out a geotechnical investigation of these landslides, and to establish the mechanisms that produce cliff failure on the Peninsula. Landslides were identified from aerial photographic interpretation and engineering geological mapping at a scale of 1:5000, and were classified as, 1) probable large scale block failures, 2) piping-triggered block failures, 3) wave erosion triggered block failures, and 4) colluvium/topsoil failures. Geotechnical core logging at a scale of 1:50 identified a number of stratigraphic units including the Post-Rotoehu Ash Tephras, Rotoehu Ash, Palaeosol, Hamilton Ash, Pahoia Tephras, Cross-bedded sequence, Upper Bounding Aquitard, Aquifer, and Lower Bounding Aquitard. The total thickness of the sequences are approximately 15m, and failures in 1995 were associated with a piping failure within the aquifer and lower section of the Crossbedded sequence triggering a block landslide. Geotechnical testing involved both field and laboratory testing to characterise the various stratigraphic units present within the logged cliff faces. In-situ shear strength testing indicated variable strength through out the profile, with the Palaeosol demonstrating the highest shear strength, and the Aquifer the lowest. This relationship was also confirmed by unconsolidated undrained triaxial laboratory testing. Clay mineralogy analysis indicated that the main constituent clays present were mixed layer 7 & 10 Å Halloysite and Allophanes. Atterberg Limit testing demonstrated a range of plasticities from low to very high. Direct shear testing indicated low cohesions and high friction angles for the Cross-bedded sequence and Aquifer, and a moderate cohesion and friction angle for the Lower Bounding Aquitard. Dispersion and Erodibility testing showed the Post-Rotoehu Ash Tephras, Rotoehu Ash, and Palaeosol to be non-dispersive and non-erodible, whilst the Cross-bedded sequence was dispersive and highly erodible. Both in-situ and laboratory permeability testing indicated low permeabilities associated with the stratigraphic units of the Peninsula. From field and laboratory investigations a hydrogeological model was developed to explain the fast lag times delineated by plots of piezometric water level response to rainfall. The hydrogeological model combined components of a "defect controlled permeability model" and a "hydraulic head response model". The "defect controlled permeability model" indicates that these fast lag times can be produced by soakage water permeating through high permeability flow pathways such as exfoliation defects, fractures, and heavy bioturbation structures. The "hydraulic head response model" involves the rapid transferral of a pressure wave along the Aquifer and lower section of the Cross-bedded sequence in response to changes in the hydraulic head of the Peninsula due to recharge within a much larger catchment of approximately 5km² Stability analysis using a non-circular failure mode was conducted for an increasing phreatic surface and landslide block size. The phreatic surface was related to piezometric water levels and showed that with an increase in the phreatic surface there was a decreased in the factor of safety by 0.1 from 1.0 to 0.9. Increasing the landslide block size was undertaken to determine whether larger blocks were likely to fail. From calculations it was concluded that failure of blocks greater than 10m back from the cliff edge were unlikely for the piping triggered model. Two principal conclusions can be drawn from this study. Firstly a 2H:1V slope line projected back up to the Peninsula's surface from the base of the cliff delineating a geotechnical assessment zone is not a correct representation of the failure types threatening cliff top properties. Therefore, this assessment criteria should be reassessed, and a policy adopted where by any future development on a cliff top property should require a geotechnical report if deemed necessary by the Consents Officer from evidence of slope failures in adjoining properties or other evidence of instability on site. The second conclusion is that it takes approximately two months of double the average rainfall to produce adverse pore water conditions at the cliff edges where a rainfall event can trigger a piping-triggered block slide such.

Kennedy, Lance. "Supranational Union and New Medievalism: Forging a New Scottish State." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:26519855.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to understand why the Scottish National Party (SNP) accelerated to prominence after the establishment of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following question: To what extent does the European Union (EU) influence the Scottish independence movement and does this trend support the theory of New Medievalism? Data drawn from interviews with members of the 4th Scottish Parliament, comments made by former First Minister Alex Salmond, and scientific polling tend to show that the EU’s increasing institutional powers have facilitated the modern Scottish independence movement’s growth by mitigating the Scottish people’s fears of independence from the UK. However the data also demonstrates that the SNP’s election victory in 2011 was not just an indication of Scottish nationalism, but was a result of the SNP’s competence in government. This investigation concludes that as the EU centralizes power in supranational bodies the process of New Medievalism is working its course by dissolving Westphalian nation states. This process is revealed in the rise of the modern Scottish nationalist movement as well as other subnational independence movements in EU member states. The culmination of this movement was the rise of the SNP and the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.

Full text
Abstract:
The Kaikoura area is a valuable feeding spot for sperm whales with the presence of a submarine canyon close to shore. Male sperm whales can be found there year around, close to the shore and exhibiting almost constant foraging activities. This thesis investigates the distribution and habitat use, both spatially and temporally, of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) within the Kaikoura submarine canyon, New Zealand. The primary aim was to determine which oceanographic variables and bathymetric features influence the sperm whale distribution patterns off Kaikoura. A theodolite was used to track surfacing and movement of sperm whales from a shore-based station. The accuracy of positions recorded by the theodolite was investigated by comparing theodolite measurements of an object of known position. A calibration technique was then developed as the vertical angle was not accurately determined by the theodolite. In addition to investigating the distribution of sperm whales, the daily abundance of sperm whales within the Kaikoura submarine canyon was estimated. Distance sampling and mark-resight models showed an average of 4 (SEM = 0.13) individuals present in the study area at any given time. The mark-resight technique using photo-identification was not possible from a shore-based station so a spatio-temporal model was built in order to track the identity of individuals. The model was tested using photo-identification of sperm whales collected from a boat-based station. Results showed that 88% of the modeled identifications corresponded to the photo-identification database. Sperm whales off Kaikoura were strongly associated with depth, slope and distance from the nearest coast. They were found in waters between 500 m to 1250 m deep and preferred shallower waters in winter. In spring, sperm whales occurred further from the coast, mainly in the Hikurangi Trough, north-east of the shore-based station. Generalized Additive Models (GAM) were used to identify significant oceanographic variables predicting the presence of sperm whales off Kaikoura. Models indicated that sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophylla (Chla) and distance from sea surface temperature fronts were all important parameters in predicting sperm whales presence. Results showed that sperm whales aggregated in the section of the study area with the lowest SST and near SST fronts. This study provides a detailed insight into the use of the Kaikoura submarine canyon by male sperm whales.

Abstract:
Political Science
Ph.D.
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the burden-sharing behavior of new NATO members and the impact of enlargement on NATO burden-sharing. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to test several hypotheses. The findings suggest that large NATO members are burden-sharing at a greater rate than smaller NATO members when looking at military expenditures and air contributions to NATO missions, in accordance with the logic of collective action. Contribution of troops to NATO missions depends on the mix of private and public benefits received, in accordance to the joint product model. The findings support the hypothesis that new NATO members are burden-sharing at a greater rate than older NATO members. An analysis of the burden-sharing behavior of NATO's new members reveals that new NATO members have demonstrated the willingness to contribute to NATO missions, but are often constrained by their limited capabilities. However, new member contributions to NATO have improved and, in comparison to older NATO members, the new members are doing quite well. Finally, NATO expansion did not lead to greater free-riding behavior in NATO.

Abstract:
Life-history theory is based on the idea that every individual face a limitation of energy, nutrients and time in its lifespan. This optimization problem is resulting in trade-offs between resource demanding tasks and traits. It has been shown that parasite resistance and specific immune response is reduced by increased reproductive effort in birds. Reproduction success and malaria infection state were tested on 434 individuals in two old and one new breeding area on Gotland. With a high accuracy and fast PCR method, three genera of protozoan haemosporidians, which are also known as avian malaria parasites, were analyzed in this study to detect host-parasite interactions. The reproduction success, indicated as lay-date and fledge, in Rums and OLD areas, Gotland, Sweden, did not show any significant relation to infection state. Instead, age (Young < 2yrs vs Old ≥ 2yrs) was found to be the most influential factor affecting reproduction success. A trade-off between infection state and patch size (secondary sexual traits) has not been shown in this study. However, there are still pieces missing in understanding how avian malaria parasites affect their host's fitness, such as the host bird immunity response to the blood parasite species and intensity levels, which need to be examined in future studies.

Abstract:
The number of refugees worldwide has reached record levels in recent years. Sweden experienced a sharp increase of refugees in 2015 that lead to a shortage of accommodations. The study aims to explore how the Real Estate companies view different accommodation solutions for asylum seekers and new citizens and how they view factors related to the housing with an impact on economic integration. The study is qualitative and based on interviews with the Swedish Migration Agency, and representatives of municipal and private property companies. The result is that construction of new apartments is a challenge for many municipal housing companies and several actors view long-term demand of apartments as uncertain in areas where demand has increased due to immigration. Regarding existing stock there is a lack of economic incentives to set aside apartments particularly for asylum-seekers and new citizens. There is a resistance among several actors to invest in housing particularly for asylum-seekers or new citizens. The private Real Estate companies focused on community properties does not think that housin particularly for asylum-seekers or new citizens is included in their strategy. There are municipal actors that have chosen to invest in this kind of housing. For construction of housing for asylum-seekers or new citizens to be attractive for investors it is necessary in negotiations to achieve a relatively high rent and long contractual period. It is also necessary that the location and characteristics of the housing provide good chances of alternative use once the contract expires. Regarding factors with an impact on the possibilities of economic integration the actors involvement vary. In general the municipal housing companies takes great responsibility not only for providing housing but also for creating a good living environment and in some cases even employment

Abstract:

Albania has been struggling with EU accession despite the allocation of numerous funds in the form of development programs for several years. The study attempts to identify the endogenous obstacles to development and the utilization of funds due to both formal and informal institutions. The reviewed literature shows a clear correlation between economic growth and good quality institutions. Besides, it indicates that informal institutions play a major role in the development process. Therefore the role of the Kanun in Albania is examined. As defined by mainly Douglas North, the New Institutional Economics theory is used to dive into Albania’s formal and informal institutions and discover how those determine the politico-economic and social structures. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine key participants who work in IPA II projects at the local level across the country. The country was divided into three regions in order to identify variations in the role of IPA II funds, institutions, and degree of development. Before the analysis is done and the results are presented, the historical background of the three key historical periods of the country, Ottoman, Communist and Democracy, is provided to set the base of the origin of present institutions. The results from the interviews and the macro-economic indicators of the three regions show a correlation between good defined formal institutions and economic growth and strong informal institutions and stagnation, as the theory suggested.

Our country, Taiwan, is full of entrepreneurship, and limitless innovation. Our law and citizens are strongly supporting entrepreneurship. This phenomenon intrigued me and I hope for new perspective form the entrepreneur process. Generally new ventures are usually in lack of resources, therefore gaining resources are crucial. Now domestic scholars have sampled small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to probe into their process of enhancing their own abilities relational network will influence organization, so we pay attention to how relational knowledge affects the network. The new venture will get successful way from this; that is, the new venture will gain knowledge by learning. Organization learning is the way of building competitive advantage; our focus is the network of new venture. I try to find a set of learning way, and create competitive advantage by this way. Although relational network is important, the building of inside organizational ability is the same. Now domestic scholars have done a lot of research on the building of inside organization ability and the topic about finding relational learning are rare, so I chose this one. I adopted the research strategy of case study, and interview deeply to 4 case companies. I attempt to merge the theory and practice, and then know that the chance while starting an enterprise distinguishes stage and relies mainly on environmental knowledge acquisition, which combines systematically that knowledge. Relational network relies mainly on interpersonal network, enter after founding enterprises, create enterprises and need to rely mainly on study of interaction knowledge, and it is to merge mutual this way of intelligence way to have through creating common looking at the land that it studies the way, and better interaction knowledge can open up network members' relationship, establish the network relation that pluralism disperses. Through the accumulation of interaction knowledge, they can create the improvement of the mutual trust of both sides, and then get more functional knowledge, as a result, pay attention to functional knowledge of products’ tendency, and this kind of knowledge must practice by way of learning by doing. The new ventures can know which relations of cooperative are worth being kept, and reduce the members of the network. Hence, the relationship of network members becomes converged and interdependent. At the moment, the new venture must take tacit knowledge; that is, through talking the functional knowledge of product tendency lets other organizations know the product and technique of new venture, and creates good reputation to attract more cooperates. In the process of cooperation, the new venture will build institute, and the process of cooperation will institutionalized, and then create the network of mutually beneficial.

In 1987 the Chinese Communist Party''s 13 major conferences, Zhao Ziyang to "along the socialist road with Chinese characteristics forward," as its theme. Against the international situation and the needs of the modernization of the Chinese Communists, the "peace and development" the two main themes, so as to adjust the diplomatic pattern and the party''s external relations, development of independence, oppose hegemonism and safeguard world peace foreign policy. Chinese Communists put forward a new concept of security to reflect the post-Cold War security environment of uncertainty and complexity, in the context of globalization under the guidance of the mutual dependence between countries continues to deepen with the temporal and spatial changes in the PRC, the mutual trust, mutual benefit , equality and coordination, a new security concept that must move away from old Cold War era thinking, emphasis on dialogue and consultation to promote mutual understanding and confidence-building. China needs a long-term peaceful environment, to achieve its modernization; CPC-depth understanding of China''s peaceful development is inseparable from the common participation of all countries in the world. Should start having a sense of trust in order to exclude the neighboring countries for the Chinese Communist growing competitive pressures, with the rumor of "China threat theory" association. Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence as the Chinese Communist foreign policy of the foundation, through the idea of a new security concept will be the rise of Communist China military threat theory, shifted to non-traditional security areas. But economic development by domestic demand, energy, development of the western region''s development problems, a direct impact on the future development of the Chinese Communists, and even the stability of the regime. Myanmar to connect mainland China, Southeast Asia and the subcontinent of South Asia, such as the three major regions, as a result of Myanmar''s geographical location, overlooking the Strait of Malacca is the export of India to the west can be compressed in the South China Sea, Southeast Asia, first-line extension of the space, the north can be cut off China and ASEAN nations in the land of the contact. Achieved if China''s military cooperation with Myanmar, Myanmar may offer China in the Indian Ocean, several offshore islands, naval facilities. Strategic position in the whole of Southeast Asia, especially to clamp down the Strait of Malacca, it’s a form of influence. Once the Chinese communists took control of the Strait of Malacca and Singapore''s strategic area of the throat, can be obtained in neighboring countries from the Middle East oil and enter the European market access control under its sphere of influence. Communist China, through Myanmar to the Indian Ocean, another layer of significance in the United States to break the cloth under the "Malacca dilemma", but also to limit the India in South Asia to establish "exclusive" of regional hegemony and become China''s geopolitical rivals. Myanmar in the CPC''s initial idea was originally set up for use as a transport corridor to get rid of the plight of Malacca program, but due to regional environmental changes, so realize that the Chinese Communists, Myanmar in addition to the provision of transport and trade access, the At the same time to give the CPC an opportunity to develop sea power in order to protect transportation security as a pretext to strengthen the development of military forces in the Indian Ocean (including the aircraft carrier for the future to prepare for pre-configuration), indirectly affect the ASEAN nations, and then power from the Indian Ocean extended to the Pacific, reaching to contain India and the United States against the purpose, which some actions may be an attempt to want to stand in the leadership of the CPC''s position, in order to re-construct a new world order for the layout.
