Abstract:
To cast the story of modernity and its epochs as a story about conditions of thought in relation to conditions of rule, this book offers a philosophical memoir in place of a theoretical framework, and begins with Foucault’s question: “But what is it impossible to think . . .?” Drawing on Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Wilhelm Dilthey, and Martin Heidegger leads to an idealist, or antirealist, stance. Heidegger would have us thrown into the world, which is thereupon present-at-hand for each of us. We might say instead that we throw ourselves at the world, which pushes back, or gives way, in degrees

Abstract:
50 Studies Every Ophthalmologist Should Know succinctly summarizes the most important and clinically relevant studies published in the mainstream ophthalmology literature in the past forty years. Emphasis has been placed on landmark studies, that changed thinking and practice in the field, rather than studies that are most frequently cited. Most are randomized controlled trials that have helped shape current ophthalmology practice guidelines. However, some important observational (cohort, case-control, and descriptive) studies are also included. The book is divided into seven sections, corresp

Abstract:
Principle 9 provides guarantees of procedural fairness for persons implicated in past violations. An important element of a commission’s historical account is to identify those responsible for past violations, which contributes to the fulfilment of the right to truth. However, the consequences of being named in a final report can have important ramifications, especially for an individual’s reputation, family life and privacy. Before commissions publish findings in relation to specific persons, best practice dictates that information implicating individuals be corroborated and that they be affo

Abstract:
This chapter presents axioms for comparative conditional probability relations. The axioms presented here are more general than usual. Each comparative relation is a weak partial order on pairs of sentences but need not be a complete order relation. The axioms for these comparative relations are probabilistically sound for the broad class of conditional probability functions known as Popper functions. Furthermore, these axioms are probabilistically complete. Arguably, the notion of comparative conditional probability provides a foundation for Bayesian confirmation theory. Bayesian confirmation
