Thesis, Paris 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA01D015.

Full text
Abstract:
The lex petrolea is the set of rules established over time by actors involved in the exploration, development and exploitation of hydrocarbons. Recorded and regularly updated by Anglo-Saxon doctrine, it constitutes Archimedes' point from which academic work declines what should be considered hydrocarbon law. It is more likely to be interpreted as a set of norms of plural sources (arbitral, contractual, legislative), without any overall coherence and, above all, without distinguishing the role of actors who nevertheless have a different legal and economic status. On the one hand, States are certainly driven by legitimate patrimonial interests, but also by geo-economic and even political interests. Energy investors on the other hand are exclusively motivated by the gain of profit, and this relationship generates a significant hydrocarbon law. In order to renew the legal doctrine of this activity, a new approach is proposed based on the respective and complementary theories of legal monism on the one hand and legal relationalism on the other. Once legal norms are established, they are more or less applied, immersed in the special relationship between States and their contracting partners. The contractual relationship leads to a broader legal relationship structured around written standards, shareholder practices and simply around a relationship that generates a hydrocarbon law that goes beyond identifiable written standards. The systematic intervention of a third party, either the administration in several forms in the execution of the obligations of the parties, or the arbitrator in the event of litigation, allows the construction, upkeep and permanent maintenance of legal relations between the parties. They thus create a symbolic framework for their relations, under the influence and total control of the State, as the owner of the extractive resources. This is what we have called in conclusion to the study the relational monism of African hydrocarbon law

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to study segregation within the Swedish school system, with regard to the reformation during the last decades of the 20th century which researchers have described as a system change. After an initial research survey two questions are identified: one which concerns the process of human becoming, and the other concerning segregation, within and between social milieus in a school system. The first is answered from a relationistic philosophical perspective, which leads to the study object the educative milieu. In turn the study object leads to the development of a research approach to investigate such settings. The research approach consists in the construction of epistemic objects (in short: epiobjects) – in this case two school classes whose pupils have actively made the choice of these classes – understood as monistic entities constituted of internal relational structures. The construction of the epiobjects identifies the families involved in the classes as informants and decides on a number of research themes (for example description of the school, the teachers, leisure activities) for the data collection. The disposition of the study consists of tree main steps: determining relevant symbols, positioning and description. Determining relevant symbols means to decide what is assigned meaning in respect of the research themes. This was achieved through an interview study. Positioning means to decide how the symbols and bodies are distributed within the epiobjects in order to represent their relational structures. This was done with questionnaire data that was organised with aid of correspondence analysis. In the description the epiobjects can be understood as educative milieus, by focusing on their educative tensions and doxa. Educative tensions are differences between positions in the epiobjects relational structure, while doxa are areas of agreement. The analysis shows that the epiobjects are obviously different in terms of educative tensions and doxa. The main difference between the epiobjects concern the families’ motives for the choice they have made: families in one class maintained they chose the school because of its subject specialisation, while families in the other claimed that they sought a school characterised by orderly behaviour and a better learning of subject knowledge and skills. Associated with these differences are dissimilarities concerning, for instance, political orientation, education level, income, democracy, freedom of choice, as well as regarding inclination to attend different kinds of cultural events and institutions. The results can be seen as an illustration of how a system of freedom of choice leads to segregation, by orienting people with dissimilar preferences to different alternatives while, at the same time, these preferences concerning school choice correspond with differences in other areas of life.

Amat, Matthieu. Thesis, Paris 1, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA01H215.

Full text
Abstract:
We suggest reading Georg Simmel's work as an endeavor to determine an idea of culture that is suitable to a modernity dominated by objectivation and functionalization processes, and where one can observe the "discrepancy" between the "subjective culture" and the "objective culture". Simmel is not only a Kulturkritiker, who would merely describe this problem, he is also a philosopher of culture, who seeks to determine the ontological and axiological structure of the problem and solve it. This effort appears as the fulfillment of a theoretical program known as "relativism", which we rename "philosophical relationism". This relationism, after having accounted for the specific validity of the cultural formations - within the form of a theory of value and objective spirit -, aims at promoting it to a second order validity, individual and alive, that is: to the form of individual culture. Thus, relationism constitutes itself as a "cosmic concept" of philosophy, which doesn't take the form of a system, but that of a functional metaphysics, while the static opposition between the subject and the object is outmatched towards an "objectivation of the subject" and a "desubjectivation of the individual"

Abstract:
The thesis evaluates the potential of Fine’s Semantic Relationism for a cognitivist approach to language and the mind. The main aim is to champion Semantic Relationism as the only adequate theory of content for the Language of Thought by bringing out the benefits of the theory over its main rivals, Referentialism and Fregeanism. It seeks to show that only Semantic Relationism can address all the variants of Frege’s Puzzle for the Language of Thought, and that it can do so in a way that avoids the substantial difficulties that beset other semantic theories. The main outcome is at the same time a vindication of the adopted semantic theory and a confirmation of the viability of the Language of Thought hypothesis. The thesis also offers a new theory of propositions on the basis of the Language of Thought and a Relationist semantics that differs significantly from all such presently available theories, including Fine’s. The final result is a theory of propositions as syntactically structured mental representations, which are sentences in the Language of Thought, that are content bearers individuated by their semantic content as specified by Semantic Relationism. A major objective of the thesis is to highlight the advantages of this view over both classical and current alternatives. The thesis develops its overall view by offering solutions in three closely related ongoing debates. First, the challenge posed by Frege’s Puzzle for thought and belief, Kripke’s Puzzle notably included, secondly, the problem about the proper type-individuation of Language of Thought symbol tokens, and thirdly, the debate about the ontological nature of concepts and propositions. By developing a promising Relationist response to these problems, the thesis also provides additional support to Fine’s semantic theory by considerably expanding its scope of application.

Abstract:
Everything is related. Some of the relations we see, some of them we don't. Architecture is a synthesis of elements, relating to itself and to the outside. A challenge in this project lies in the recognition of the relationships which occur within the context and their translation into a form of architecture. I would like to see what we can do with architecture; connection, enclosure, depth of the space...

Architecture can be considered as relations in which we live.

McMahon, Margery A. "Changing relations : Russia's relations with Ukraine and Belarus." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2000. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2457/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the period of transition which followed the collapse of the USSR, the states of that region were forced to make many political and economic adjustments. A crucial part of the processes was the restructuring of relations among these formerly fraternal republics and as they became in 1991, independent states. For most states structuring relations with Russian became a priority since it is the largest and most dominant regional actor. Such relations are shaped by a number of factors including historical development, economic legacies and geopolitical concerns. These issues have impacted upon the evolving relationship between Russia and its Slav neighbours, Ukraine and Belarus. Drawing on a common background in terms of historical political, economic and cultural development, Russia's relations with these states developed to the point where they were formalized in a Russian Belarusian Community (1996) and a Russian Ukrainian Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation (1997). The impetus for Russia to renegotiate its relations with the states on its western borders was strengthened by the proposed eastward expansion of NATO. Belarus and Ukraine however benefited from this. Belarus was guaranteed cheap supplies of Russian natural resources, vital for its economy, even if this came at the cost of ceding a degree of sovereignty. Ukraine, still excluded from European political and economic organizations was recognized by Russia as an independent state with significant regional influence. Russia secured a buffer zone on its western borders. Russia's relations with Ukraine and Belarus are now qualitatively different. Ukraine has emerged as a potential ally and even future rival to Russia while Belarus has opted to become a Russian client state with, it appears, the ultimate goal of union with Russia.

Abstract:
To find competencies on a workplace with flex office structure. Companies today, 2012 are facing new opportunities and challenges. Information technology develops, competition is bigger today than ever, increased environmental requirements will be added and new patterns of life and values are occurring. This means that people who work in offices feel strong pressure of conversion, which is something that people experience differently. Therefore it is essential how the working environment is designed in an office. Working in an office means a lot of information processing and we can see large changes taking place. The ability to work efficiently, flexible and to be able to lead and plan a company’s resources efficient is essential. The flex office was developed in the beginning of 1992 and was meant to be an office independent of space and time, and an office where all information and working material is gathered in a common database. At a flex office there are no given working places instead the employees chooses their working station for the day. A problem for the employees in flex office environment is to find the competencies they need. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a design proposal that solves the customer's information design problem in finding competencies at the workplace. Theoretical data has been gathered through studies of literature. Empirical data has been gathered through interviews, observation and a questionnaire. These data have then formed the basis for the design proposal which is created with help from Michanek and Breilers design model. To find the competencies, different working environments have been created and also a workplace location system. The design proposal divides the working environment in three different activity environments. These are made to help form the workplace location system; in order to include the needs from the target group as well as it gives the opportunities to find the working competencies through good information design. The workplace location system gives the employee the opportunity to find other competencies at the office by explicit showing the status and localization of the employee.

Abstract:

Voskeritsian, Horen. "Industrial relations in crisis? : the 'new industrial relations' theory and the field of industrial relations in Britain." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/301/.

Full text
Abstract:
A common feeling among the Industrial Relations community is that the field faces a crisis that challenges both its ability to address the phenomena it studies and its institutional structures. However, the literature is not clear on the reasons for this development. Some argue, predominantly in Britain, that the cause of this crisis is the penetration of Human Resource Management (HRM) or, as this trend is also known, of the New Industrial Relations (NIR) theory, in the intellectual and institutional edifice of the field. Others, however, especially from the US, believe that the reason for the inability of the field to deal with the external environment is its adherence to an oldfashioned paradigm that does not take into consideration the changing nature of industrial relations realities. For them, the solution is to incorporate the teachings of the NIR theory in the intellectual corpus of Industrial Relations. Thus, one is faced with two contradictory positions that have the same bases, namely that the field is in a critical condition and that, somehow, a theory is involved (or should be involved) in the picture. However, the discrepancy between the two theses poses important conceptual problems for the future of the field for it is not as yet clear who is to blame (if anyone) for its current situation. It is, therefore, the aim of this Thesis to clarify the above picture. To achieve this, both the above theses will be evaluated. To do so, it is imperative to study the epistemological implications of the NIR theory for the field of Industrial Relations, and then to examine the place the NIR theory occupies in the intellectual structures of the field in Britain. Once this is achieved, the issue of crisis will be tackled in more detail to determine whether British Industrial Relations actually face the crisis that the various voices in the literature ascribe it with. In the Introduction the general problem and the Research Questions of the Thesis will be discussed. Then, the First Chapter will set the theoretical context upon which the analysis will be based. Chapter Two will present the intellectual and institutional development of the field of Industrial Relations, while Chapter Three will be devoted to an analysis of the NIR theory. Chapter Four will examine the epistemic value of the theory for the field of Industrial Relations and Chapter Five will investigate the position that the NIR theory occupies in the British Industrial Relations fora of knowledge development. Chapter Six will complement the above discussion by examining the evolutionary dynamics of the NIR theory. In Chapter Seven the intellectual status of Industrial Relations will be examined to see whether the field faces an intellectual crisis. Then, Chapter Eight will analyse the dynamics of the field in Britain to evaluate the condition of the field’s institutions. Finally, in Chapter Nine, the institutional status of the field, together with some ideas about the field’s future will be further discussed, and some promising avenues for future research will be presented.

Paris 5, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005PA05H030.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is questioning the relation that young adolescent have with otherness : inter-group relations and friendship relations. Concerning inter group relations , we have wished to question the existence of an "ethnical" discrimination among French children. Anderson's Functional Theory of Cognition enables us to find ethnical and socio cultural features that leads to acceptation or rejection of the other. Territorial origin, language, economic level, clothes and manner of eating appear to be judgement criterias that might lead to the rejection of the other. On the other hand, children do not take into account skin colour or religion to make a decision. The second part of this work deals with friendship between children and shows motivations for choosing a "different" friend. Investigation from Apter's Reversal Theory brings to light Alloïc and Sympathy motivations. Finally, this work leads to the creation of an evaluation device for children's relationships. This device will allow to analyze seven aspects of children's social relationships : xenophile norm's internalization ; friendship' sublimation ; the importance of time spent playing or talking with the friend ; the affection granted by friendship ; school life ; consideration of others' emotions and rules transgression

Abstract:
Globalization has significantly increased the number of stakeholders in transnational issues in recent decades. The typical list of the new players in global affairs often includes non-state actors like non-governmental organizations, multinational corporations, and international organizations. Sub-national governments, however, have been given relatively little attention even though they, too, have a significant interest and ability to shape the increasing flow of capital, goods, services, people, and ideas that has so profoundly influenced the global political economy in recent decades. California, arguably the most significant among sub-national governments – its economy would be seventh or eighth in the world at $2.2 trillion annually, it engages in over $570 billion in merchandise trade, and has a population of nearly 40 million, out of which over 10 million are immigrants – is also one of the most active in transnational issues. The state government has opened and closed dozens trade offices abroad since the 1960s. It set up a multi-billion dollar carbon cap-and-trade system jointly with the Canadian provinces of Québec and Ontario under Assembly Bill 32, one of the most significant pieces of climate change legislation to date. California’s educational, technological, and media hubs – its public and private universities, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood – draw some of the best and brightest from around the world. California also has a long history of involvement in transnational issues. State efforts to undermine growing Chinese then Japanese “menace” immigrant populations from the mid-19th through the mid-20th centuries influenced United States foreign policy. This thesis first takes a look at the federalism and international relations issues faced by California as it plays a greater role in transnational issues. Then, it examines the main actors and institutions, and the issues at play. The states have some leeway under the Constitution and contemporary political order to use their domestic powers to influence global issues, whether through climate legislation, public pension divestment, or non-binding “Memoranda of Understanding” with foreign governments. Such behavior, while less significant than national policy, can fill gaps in national policy, promote policy change, and deepen global ties, promoting a more complex interdependence among nations. California can also exert a moral, soft power influence in leading by example. The structures promoting California’s growing role in transnational issues are poorly organized. If the Golden State is to better leverage its political, economic, and moral authority internationally, it would do well to more explicitly develop a unified vision for its role in the world.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, 2004.

One of the fundamental issues in cognitive science is the problem of grounding concepts in the perceptual world. In this thesis, I present a computational theory for how spatial relations are grounded in the perceptual world. Three constraints are critical to this theory: abstractness, groundedness and flexibility all of which need to be satisfied in order to explain the structure of spatial concepts. I then show how a formal framework, based on the mathematical notions of category theory can be used to model the grounding problem. The key computational ideas are that of minimal mapping and derivations. A minimal mapping of two categories, A and B, is the "smallest' category, C, that contains A and B. A derivation is a sequence of categories that follow a minimal mapping rule. Derivations and minimal mappings are used to model three domains - the semantics of prepositions, the structure of a toy "Jigsaw World" and the semantics of generic terms and quantifiers. In each case, I show how the computational theory gives rise to insights that are not available upon a purely empirical analysis. In particular, the derivational account shows the importance of stable, non-accidental features and of multiple scales in spatial cognition.

Abstract:
This study traces the development of Philippine-USSR relations and examines the implications of such development for Philippine national security, in particular, and the regional security of Southeast Asia in general. At a glance, this is a problem for history and not for international relations. However, national and regional security problems in Southeast Asia are closely tied with the historical development of each nation's relations with external powers, particularly the United States and Soviet Union. Any assessment of different national threat perceptions and their policy implications for national or regional security can be misleading if not viewed within the perpective of historical developments. This is particularly true with respect to the Philippines. The country has never been isolated from regional events nor from the influence of international powers. Its security options reflect this relationship. First, it was closely allied with the United States (as it still is), being a US colony since the turn of this century up to 1946 when the country got its political independence. Second, while politically independent, the Philippines has been economically dependent. Third, as a result of this dependency, Philippine foreign policy up to 1968 was closely tied with the American foreign policy. Fourth, with worldwide economic recession, following the oil embargo of 1973, the country was forced to open trade and diplomatic relations with other countries, particularly with the socialist and communist bloc. And fifth, the Philippines established diplomatic ties with the USSR in 1976, apparently to ensure trade and commercial markets outside of the traditional US and Japan markets.

Lee, Jyung-yi. "Self and other relations in international relations : the case of Taiwan." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.502168.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to bring poststructuralist discourse theory to both International Relations (lR) and the study of national identity in Taiwan. The unification/independence problematique in Taiwan is conceptualised as two responses to the ordering of the modern political world. As such, while identity formation and contestation take place mostly at the domestic level, they nevertheless involve an international dimension, as the sense of Self that any political community assumes only has its meaning in the presence of the Other. To study the dynamics of identity construction, this thesis takes Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory (1985) as the framework, as it provides strong explanatory powers and valuable implications to the worldwide problem of identity and difference, of which the Taiwan case is one example. This thesis takes 'democracy', 'history- culture', and 'economic development' as three case studies. The exercise of democracy has generated a sense of Self amongst Taiwan people, but it also makes possible social relations to be reorganised in a dichotomised way, rendering the relationship between unification and independence one of enmity. In the cultural domain, the belief of China as an ancient, continuous and homogeneous cultural entity, a view first generated in China's encounter with the West in the modem era and then promoted by the nationalist government (the KMT), constitutes 'Chinese/ness' as a major source of cultural representation, and hinders alternative discourse(s). In the economic domain, Taiwan's economic achievements have made 'development' a way of self-labelling and an incontestable quest. This provides the unification discourse an external reason for integrating with China, and constraints the independence one to argue otherwise but to resort to ideas of security and autonomy. Finally, it is argued that the binary logic of unification and independence is an instance of undecidability, which calls for making ethico-political judgements that are always provisional.

Abstract:
Apart from General de Gaulle's state visit to Canada in 1967, little is known of the diplomatic relations between France and Canada. Yet, there has been diplomatic relations since World War I. .

Cieľom predkladanej diplomovej práce bolo porovnať prvky organizačnej kultúry s vnímaním týchto prvkov verejnosťou. Následne porovnať do akej miery sa zhoduje vnímanie týchto prvkov verejnosťou. Pre účely mojej práce boli sledovanými prvkami organizačnej kultúry poslanie, vízia a hodnoty organizácie. K účelom výskumu som si vybrala detský domov sv. Nikolaja v Medzilaborciach. Aby som naplnila tieto jednotlivé ciele využila som jednu z foriem dotazovania a to rozhovor.

Sirait, George Martin. "Employment Relations in Indonesia’s Retail Sector: Institutions, Power Relations and Outcomes." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12345.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines employment relations in Indonesia’s retail sector. Drawing on the disciplines of Political Economy, Economic Geography and Industrial Relations, it investigates the relationship between global retail and home and host country institutions in order to identify the factors responsible for the converging and diverging patterns in employment outcomes. The thesis develops an actor-centred institutionalist approach, which extends the utility of embeddedness theory by taking into account the impact of contestation between trade unions and corporate actors in multiple institutional arenas on firm-level industrial relations and employment outcomes. Using in-depth comparative case study methods, this approach is applied to a European retailer, an Asian transnational retailer and a prominent domestic retailer in the food industry. The thesis demonstrates that country-of-origin effect has little influence on firm-level employment relations in the Indonesian retail sector. Rather, similarities in the organization of work, skill formation and baseline remuneration in the three retailers are a consequence of product market pressure and regulatory and institutional constraints, while differences in job security and the distribution of wages and benefits stem from organized labour’s differential capacity to challenge the prerogative of management in each firm. As these findings suggest, while embeddedness theory provides useful insights into the behaviour and strategy of transnational retailers, its utility is greatly enhanced when it is combined with an actor-centred institutionalist approach that acknowledges the power relations between industrial relations actors in different institutional domains and the potential impact of contestation across those domains on firm-level employment outcomes.

Abstract:
Today's organizations face significant challenges in being competitive with the outside world. Human resources are the organizations most important factor at all survive. For the business to be able to manage and utilize employee skills in the right way, it creates conditions and occasions where relationships can occur. This is something that is discussed in both research and literature as well as how organizations should be structured to encourage work on employees. This study is a contribution to be used in organizations to work to develop employees' collective learning about each other to strengthen relationics. Process method that has been used to create collective learning among employees is attractive work. Participants have been carrying out the method and observations have been made on how the participants have acted during the process. The result shows that to achieve a collective learning requires participants to show the commitment and willingness to learn about each other. Through dialogue creates the conditions to understand each other. That's when the understanding is on another as relations strengthened, and thus created relationic.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching aim of the thesis is to present a framework that makes possible an understanding of bilateral relations that challenges mainstream International Relations (IR) approaches through a study of the “history issue” in Sino-Japanese relations. A secondary aim is to provide an alternative understanding of this issue. Discussions of the issue are often highly influenced by the objectivism, rationalism, state-centrism and agent-centrism common in mainstream IR theory. This has several consequences, primarily that the focus is chiefly on behaviour and that equal emphasis is rarely put on both contexts. In order to address these consequences, the question of what kinds of narrative, as expressed in museum exhibitions about war in both countries, can be found and which ones dominate is addressed using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The narratives, which contain the stories “we” tell about “our” past, are important components in and instantiate the abstract images that are identities, through which people make sense of the world. The context-sensitive analysis confirms the constructivist assumption that narratives matter by demonstrating that political actors strongly believe narratives shape people’s minds and act accordingly. It also shows that different narratives are present in both countries. It is suggested that the narratives are closely linked to domestic identity politics. Nonetheless, the depiction of self and other in these has consequences for bilateral relations. This has several implications, for example, that changes in the behaviour of leaders, while they may have a positive impact on relations, are insufficient as solutions to the problems. This has consequences for approaches preoccupied with behaviour. The study contributes to constructivist IR through a close textual analysis of narrative structure that illustrates the significance of labelling and categorizing in identity construction that is easily missed by less fine-grained analyses.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examined the role played by international and domestic influences in shaping the relationship between state and society in postcolonial societies. It argued that the nature of the state in the international system is the product of the historical processes of state and societal formation and must be studied as such. Therefore, it examined the evolution of state-societal relationship from colony to independent state in Saint Lucia. The examination is premised on the view that the state acts in two dimensions - the domestic and the international. The thesis therefore critiques traditional international relations theories which treat the state in its totality as an analytic abstraction, and argued that international relations theory can best explain the nature of the state when it brings into analysis the role of the domestic in shaping the state. Therefore, the nature of the state was examined as the interplay of the "domestic" and the "international". Three historical periods are examined to show how international and domestic influences shaped state-societal relations and generated conflicts which caused transformative events. These events in turn caused fundamental changes to the state-societal relationship. All three periods showed that the nature of state and society is rooted in the dominance of external forces over domestic forces. The early state originated in the colonial experience which lasted until independence in 1979. That state was not a product of society and did not enjoy an organic relationship with society. As the state evolved, the level of influence of the domestic was shown to increase. The independent state, though sovereign, was itself a product of external influences and remains influenced by external forces. However, the thesis showed that in the post-independence period these influences are forcing integration between state and society.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with public relations education in Australia. It focuses on 1985–1999, as in these years there was significant growth in education and the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) sought greater regulation and jurisdiction over public relations activity. Existing historical scholarship focuses on the evolution of the Australian public relations industry towards professional status, and tertiary education is perceived to confirm the field’s professional standing. In contrast, I consider the development of public relations education in a broader social context and the involvement of the PRIA in tertiary education. This thesis aims to investigate the role of public relations education in the professionalisation of public relations in Australia. It uses a qualitative approach, combining archival research, focusing on the previously unstudied archives of the PRIA’s National Education Committee, and interviews with practitioners and educators. This thesis provides an analysis of how, and why, the PRIA sought to regulate public relations education. The use of historical sociology allows the findings to be interpreted in relation to broader societal structures and institutional processes, such as the expansion of the Australian higher education sector, the PRIA’s preoccupation with professional status, and the increase in female practitioners. In developing a critical account of Australian public relations education, this thesis argues that higher education was pivotal to the PRIA’s professional project. The findings confirm the constitution of public relations knowledge and its institutionalisation in the Australian academy were dynamic and contested, and that the PRIA’s professional drive informed its attempts to regulate the transmission of that knowledge. A significant finding is the ambivalent attitudes towards gender and education, given the increasing number of female graduates. These findings contribute a unique Australian perspective to the global public relations scholarship on history and professionalisation and allow a reconceptualisation of the development of public relations in Australia.

Armani, Sabine. Rennes 2, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002REN20054.

Full text
Abstract:
@Up to now, it is mainly the romanization of Hispania through the aspect of urbanization and municipalization that has held the attention of searchers as is shown by recent historiography. Family and social relations in the provinces as a whole and in the Iberian peninsula particularly have merely aroused a polite interest with historians, perhaps because it was thought that they pertained essentially to the private filed often considered as the conservatory of the pre-Roman usages. Yet, the joint rising of the studies devoted to the anthropology of kinship, on one side, and regional onomastics. Celtic especially, on the other side, suggests that the history of the family is a field of investigation very near, indeed, to customs, but still nearer to the political. From that point of view, Hispania, whose legal and urban frame is better and better known, gathers every suitable condition to carry on an original investigation about the connection of family and social relationship with romanization : how did Hispano-roman communities adapt themselsves to the introduction of civitas and its corollary, Latin law. ? After successively studying the fitting of the Roman terminology about kinship to those new territories, noting the interpretation of Roman onomastic formulae according to the status of the individuals and its seniority, and closely examining the various attitudes in front of the neww territorial definition, we shall conclude that the acculturation, at once slow and quick, was not uniform and less one-sided

Abstract

Background: Relation means the relationship between two parts. By creating a good relation between nurse and patient you can conduce a better caring. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate the relation within palliative care from nurse- patient perspective. Method: The study is a literature review where ten articles were analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The findings showed that knowledge, communication, continuity, silence and availability were the most important thing for the nurse in the relationship. Energy, regular contacts, having time and the nurse being able to listen was most important for the patient. In the encounter between the nurse and patient, communication is fundamental for understanding in the conversation where the patient tried to find information about treatment, medicament and the illness. The most valuable was being able to talk about feelings. You must get to know the patient as the person he is to be able to know his interests and what he considers important. Continuity is a prerequisite to make the patient feel safe and secure. Conclusion: Being able to pay attention to unspoken needs and understanding why the patient reacts the way he does is a proof that knowledge has appeared.

Spaseska, Aleksandra. "Australian investor relations practices." UWA Business School, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0155.

Full text
Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Investor relations (IR) management encompasses a broad range of activities including voluntary disclosure, attracting analyst coverage, targeting investors, and providing feedback to corporate managers (Byrd, Goulet, Johnson and Johnson 1993; Brennan and Tamarowski 2000; Bushee and Miller 2005). In recent years, a number of high profile corporate collapses and concerns about selective disclosure have contributed to an increased awareness of the importance of effective IR practices in promoting investor confidence. To this end, Australian market regulators and industry bodies have developed a number of best practice guidelines relating to disclosure and corporate governance. The current study undertakes a comprehensive investigation of corporate approaches to IR in the Australian context, and seeks to explain cross-sectional variation in these. The sample utilised in this study comprises 129 All Ordinaries Index (AOI) constituent companies that responded to a mail survey conducted in 2006 regarding their IR practices. The survey of all AOI companies constitutes the first Australian academic survey of IR practices, and the views of the individuals responsible for the function. Self-reported data are combined with data collected from the sample entities' websites to provide a detailed overview of corporate IR programs. The results of the survey suggest that there is widespread recognition, within the sample, of the importance of devoting organisational resources to IR. ... Several proxies for the extent of investment in IR are developed in this study. Two proxies capture organisational arrangements for managing IR, one proxy captures the frequency of one-to-one meetings with analysts and investors, and one proxy captures the quality of IR websites. Multivariate analyses relate cross-sectional variation in these to a number of firm-specific variables. Consistent with findings presented in the empirical voluntary disclosure literature, this study shows that the extent of investment in IR is positively associated with firm size, a finding that is common across all IR proxies. Ownership characteristics play an important role in explaining different types of investment in IR, as captured by the four proxies. Ownership concentration is negatively associated with the likelihood of employing an external IR consultant and positively associated with the frequency with which one-to-one meetings are held with analysts and investors. Firms with a foreign stock exchange listing, a proxy for the importance of foreign investors, achieve higher scores for the quality of their IR websites. Adverse selection models of voluntary disclosure predict that firms with good news are likely to disclose more. In contrast, the results of this study show that less profitable firms and firms with lower price-to-book ratios are more likely to have an IR department/officer, and they achieve higher scores for the quality of their IR websites. Finally, the nature of the investment in IR appears to differ with sector membership. Firms in the Materials and Energy sectors held more one-to-one meetings than firms in other sectors, while firms in the Information Technology sector are more likely to have an IR department or IR officer, and have higher quality IR websites than firms in other sectors.
