Full textIn the 16th century, Naples was a part of the Spanish Kingdom ; the Spanish influence is obvious in the institutions, but also in a 'melting-pot' society where Spaniards and Neapolitans were in contact. The first part of this work attempts a general description of Naples (historical background, main public figures, social and cultural life) before the arrival of the viceroy Toledo. The second part analyses the changes due to the reinforcement of the Spanish presence under Toledo. The Spanish presence is reflected in the topography of the town, but also in the traditions of theatre and festivals. Music and the fine arts show many examples of mutual influence between Spaniards and Neapolitans. The importance of the academies in the Neapolitan culture raises a double question - about the presence of Spaniards in those social circles, and about the suspicion of the authorities towards them. Literary and linguistic influences were prominent, and also mutual. An inquiry on the books printed in Naples from 1470 to 1600 has provided an inventory list which is analysed in the third part, allowing a better understanding of the Spanish presence in Neapolitan publishing

Full textThis thesis tries to show how books and edition could have been used as instruments of cultural domination in the relatioships between an ex-colony and its former metropolis. Of course, they don't lose their roles as cultural means of diffusion but at first, as means of diffusion of a foreign and colonizing culture. The diffusion of this culture is acheived through thecolonizer's domination of the means of production, which have never been those of the colony because of the impositions of the colonial system. Moreover, this system helped to perpetuate links based on dependance, as it gave the parent-state the possibility to diffuse its own culture in the colony, even after its independance. This phenomenon had another consequence too : the cultural production of the colony (or ex-colony) is kept apart from the editorial production process, which is dominated by foreign editors who want to diffuse their own culture among the reading elite of the colony, who had an europeanized way of thinking. Books and edition, used that way by the colonizing countries, could enter the colony by two ways : on one hand, in a cultural way, as they carries the ideology of the colonizer ; on the other hand, in an economical way, as they were a new market for editorial companies that exploited it by setting up subsidiaries and a massive exportation of printed papers. But this study wants to point out the process by which the colony got free from its colonial links and became autonomous in this particular subject of cultural production, achieving the production and diffusion of the national culture at home and through its own means. Here the question is, at first, to point out the moment when the relation ships between two countries, linked by colonial links, went from colonial domination to cultural diffusion in this particular subject of edition

Full textThis PhD deals with intercultural relations between France and the United States during the years 1830-48. A proliferation of social movements developed during this period in both countries. Americans call them (Antebellum) Reform. However, French have never used one single word to refer to such social phenomena at that time. In order to investigate this discrepancy (a similarity in events vs. A semantic difference), four case studies are considered, using an approach which is both related to historiography and to history. Two comparisons (abolitionism and feminism), and two studies on interactions (fourierism in the U. S. A. And the penitentiary reform in France) verify the hypothesis: from 1830 to 1848, despite similarities and transatlantic exchanges, the ideas and behaviors of the reformers are shaped by the two national dimensions. The conclusion of this research suggests that this tendency still exists; it also suggests extending the investigation towards other linguistic areas

Full textThe present thesis, rooted in the history of cultural relations between Europe and Latin America, analyses the concept of Spanish-America as it emerged in Spain in 1892 at the time of the 4th centenary of the discovery of America. Seventy years after its colonial empire had collapsed, in the shadow of the 1st Pan-American Conference (1889-90) in Washington and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, which proclaimed the United States’ dominance over the American continent, Spain organised a celebration intended to revitalise the ties of a transatlantic Spanish-American community founded on a shared language, history and cultural heritage. Officialdom and the professional middle classes joined forces to mount a commemoration that was a kind of quest for an image lost in a mirror, the reflections of which, scattered throughout a series of nationwide ceremonies, congresses and exhibitions, seem to express the mood of a nation seeking to retrieve the feeling of its own existence. Through the looking glass, the Latin American republics were by then in search of international alliances. Their political independence seemed solidly established, but the conquest of genuine cultural independence was still for them at an embryonic stage, requiring a rethinking of their Spanish heritage. In this context of an unprecedented confluence of generations arose the cultural confrontation this study seeks to highlight, disclosing the convergence feeding into the 1892 Spanish-American debate, the real and speculative extensions of which still to this day pervade relations between Spain and Latin America

Full textThis current study analyses the presence and image of Spain in the French cultural life of the 17th century, and in particular, in the musical sources. The complex relationships between France and Spain throughout this century provide a negative perception of the Spanish people, which is studied here not only from a musicological perspective, but also from a multidisciplinary analysis, taking into account historical, literary and artistic sources. The engravings and the propagandistic literature of the first-half of this century support the anti-Spanish image perceived in the librettos of ballets de cour during the same epoch. Such clichés will not be present in the sources of Louis XIV's reign, mainly from 1659 on (Paix des Pyrénées). Nonetheless, Spain left its particular stamp as a " mode à l'espagnole " (Spanish fashion). The phenomenon is here mostly represented by a corpus of Spanish-language airs de cour, as well as by a regular presence of Spanish-origin dances in the ballets de cour of Jean-Baptiste Lully, although fully frenchified. Lastly, the physical presence of Spanish people in the French courtier performances of the 17th century, represented by the Spanish theatre companies that travelled to France on the occasion of the wedding between Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche in 1660, will be analysed

Full textThis study of Franco-Rumanian cultural relations between 1878 and 1965 is the fruit of research carried out in a number of archive centres (Paris, Nantes, Bucharest and Geneva). Its objective is to understand why France, in its weakened state after the 1870 war, was nevertheless considered by the Romanian elite as its „older sister‟. The author then examines how France used its position to institutionalise its cultural propaganda in „Grand Romania‟ (1919-1939), working alongside Romanians to spread its influence to the annexed territories, and how a cultural agreement was signed in March 1939 despite the hostile environment created by the fascist and Nazi regimes. Relations were unsettled during the final period (1940 to 1965), with the struggle to retain French works of art during the war, the promising exchanges in the immediate after-war years, and the termination of the agreement in 1948 by Soviet-controlled Romania. After a barren period a new agreement was signed in 1965. Throughout the period French culture was enriched by its contact with Romanian intellectuals and artists whose works were integrated into France‟s cultural heritage. The author uses family records to tell the story of her Romanian ancestor, the artist Mihai Simonidi (1872-1933). After arriving in France in 1892, he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and gained a certain reputation amongst the Paris and Bucharest elite. Well-known for his nudes, marine scenes and murals, some of which can still be seen in buildings in Bucharest, he also painted the portraits of famous French artists and writers and Romanian politicians of the time
