Full textThis study is an effort to understand various manifestations of teachers violence against students, which leaves a negative impact on their scope of emotional feelings, academic achivements and social environment for both students and teachers, whom often are affected by the violent respons they receive from their own students. The purpose is also to analyse the unfavourable effects of this type of relationship on the school environment that translates into various forms of conflict, not only between teachers and students, but preceptors and many times includes school administration. In addition, the study seeks to recognize the implications that this problem has on the school and the education system itself, which often feels powerless due to the complexity of this expression of school violence in which it is the teachers and the school itself that are the perpetrators. This work uses methodological tools from the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu in order to obtain a greater approach in the academic field. Hence it mediates the power through which the school authority is exercised on the relationship between teachers and students. Moreover, school violence and bullying are approached from a socio-educational perspective that provides fundamental elements for their understanding and explanation. In order to achieve the objectives set foward, the research uses a qualitative methodology, the Participation Action Research - IAP approach and the Social Education Nuclei -NES model. The participating population was made up of students, teachers, directors and parents of three public schools in the city of Bogotá from three different locations. In-depth interviews were used to work with teachers, students, and school administration. Focus groups were held with parents and 3 NES were conducted with students in 24 work sessions lasting approximately 4 months. In conclusion, the research showed that physical and emotional punishment continue to be part of the practices of teachers and this is shaped by the unequal distribution of the city that determines the positions of students and teachers in the school field. Moreover, it is an ongoing struggle to maintain power and authority in school that demands new practices and forms of relationship that respond to the realities of contemporary society

Full textA first method using a questionnaire given to a sample of secondary school teachers and students from Casablanca (Morocco) reveals a three-level schematic structure of representations related to sex. The first includes aspects mostly influenced by social change and the second involves aspects which are subject to hesitations and thus become sources of conflict. The last level which is a hard core is made up of aspects resisting to change, i. E. , aspects concerning roles and status of each sex and the relationship between the two. Teachers' and students' self-perceptions and the perceptions and the perceptions of their respective school partners are categorised according to sex. Sex-related perceptions are dependent on socio-cultural variables (social origin, residence, father's occupation for students and social origin of teachers) as well as on sex. A second method using a projective test (t. A. T. ) Confirms a number of these perceptions and reveals responses characteristic of both sexes to the different situations in the test figures. It also shows that the apperception of the classroom situation as well as of teacher-student relationships is closely linked to the sex of the teacher and the student. These perceptions seem to have an influence on students' school achievement. Average grades obtained by students in the sample in achievement tests in arabic,. .

Full textThe author is both a teacher with a vast experience in teaching autistic pupils, and a student of Paris Descartes University in Science of Education, with on a clinical and psychoanalytical approach. The thesis questions the experience of special educational needs (SEN) teachers, specialised in the teaching of pupils with autism. The challenge is to create a psychologically healthy and supportive place as well as bonds conducive to the transfer and acquisition of knowledge. Changes must be done in the professional attitude teachers must adopt. Indeed, their pupils, cared for by numerous healthcare professionals, teachers, as well as their own families are bound to shake the teachers confidence in themselves and in what they have learnt in their professional training. The research trajectory is first analysed, then the questions raised above are presented as problematics. Four clinical interviews carried out by teachers, all working with autistic pupils are analysed. Science of Education concepts such as the self-professional, and psychoanalysis, as well as the works of Donald Woods Winnicott, Wilfred Ruprecht Bion or Jacques Lacan, are used to explore the possible meanings of the reported experience. Some results emerge: teachers conjure up varied psychological resources, present or past, personal or professional, to make contact with their pupils and maintain this unique teaching bond. Their teaching appears to rely on the bases of a relationship created by a transitional and potential space (Winnicott), so that bonds and learning can be set up

Full textToday, numerous teachers find themselves unable to transmit their messages to their pupils. Sometimes even everyday practicalities present insuperable difficulties. The pupils, whether "good" or "poor" are a source of disorder in the classroom : they are disruptive. The application of ethnographic methods within schools (both primary and secondary) and more particularly in the classroom itself, has enabled us to gain a more intimate insight into the workings of school life, far beyond that presented by traditional descriptions. Thus, we describe the malaise in the teachers pupils relationship from an ethnographic and interactionnist angle, and brighlight the contribution ethnography can make to the improvement of educative practice

Full textAccording to A. Jorro (2002) a teacher's evaluative statement is part of his professional gesture that is to say resulting from the teacher's underlying action by his incorporate background, his personal values and especially his professional ethos and his attitude towards the pupils. If we consider this behaviour as taken for granted and if we submit them to Joas's theory of Human actions' creative nature (Joas, 1999) based on intentionality and adjustments, the study attempts to show their consequences on the pupils' discursive positioning. The pupils' discursive positioning is studied by the use of registers mainly handled by the pupils themselves in terms of interaction (Goffman 1973 & 1974) intercomprehension (Habermas, 1987) and interpretation (Ricœur, 1969 & 1992). His study is based on five filmed sequences showing five 6th year's Primary School teachers with different profiles working in the same school. Each sequence shows the teacher doing corrections either in French or in Mathematics. The observation scale of evaluative statement is composed of linguistic indicators such as the teachers' favourite recourse to subjectivemes (Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 2006), to linguistic modalities (Ducrot & Schaffeur, 1995) and to perlocutionary intentions (Vermersch, 2007)

Full textPhysical contact between teachers and students can create a disturbing situation that shakes the life of the school. The task of being a teacher becomes more complex in that they run the risk of prosecution in the courts. Over the last few decades, many teachers have been brought to justice in cases of sexual assault. Union, in the educational community, have become quick to advise their members to refrain from any physical contact with their pupils in order to reduce the risk of criminal prosecution. Given this state of affairs, the question arises as to how is it possible to contribute to establishing clear procedures for the physical contact between pupils and teachers; procedures that could become a frame of reference to guide teachers who regularly use physical touch in their educational practices? For our part, we believe that this framework requires a professionalization of the physical contact, which will be discussed in this thesis. The professionalization of physical contact between teachers and pupils brings us first to the field of ethics. It should be a priority to build an ethical standard that should govern the physical contact between teachers and pupils. What could this ethical standard be? What could the content be? We will refer to several theoretical and practical sources to construct this ethical standard of the use of physical touch in education. As part of this standard will establish the acceptable distance between two persons, we will first analyze the work of socio-anthropologists concerning rules that govern civility and social interactions. Given that this standard affects both judicial and legal aspects, we have also relied on legal and jurisprudential sources. Essentially, in order to establish this standard, we have taken into account the theories that relate to physical touch, professional distance, Canadian laws and rules, existing occupational codes and prosecution decisions regarding physical touch between a teacher and a student. Subsequently, we also examined the "good practices" of physical touch in occupations where manipulation of the body is essential. All of this research will allow us to build an ethical standard that supports and gives a "professional" meaning to the physical touch between teachers and students. This norm can be perceived as an operational act that brings a body in a position of authority into contact with a body that holds a level of confidence in the other. In principle, these two bodies show each other respect by maintaining a fair or professional distance. However, during physical contact, the body in a position of authority obtains an educational objective that will essentially serve the student.

Full textThe general objective of this thesis is to study the forms of parental and teacher involvement in the school-family-community relationship and the impact of these forms on primary school achievement.. More specifically, it consists of three objectives, which correspond to the three articles of the thesis. The first objective, discussed in the first article, is the theoretical study of the links between the forms of parental involvement (IMPP), the socio-economic status of the family (SES), and the student's academic success. This objective is achieved through a metasynthesis based on the examination of meta-analyzes, the aim here being to identify the links that research has so far established between these three variables, parental involvement (IMPP), academic achievement and socio-economic status of the family (SES), taking into account the methodological difficulties of their study. In particular, the analysis found that different definitions of IMPP, SES, and success measurement tools contribute to differences in the outcomes of studies with respect to the impact of parental involvement on student achievement. The second objective of this thesis is to study the forms of IMPP from the SES of the family, the forms of teacher involvement (IMPE) and to identify the links with the achievements of primary school children. The reference frame is that of the bio-ecological model of Bronfenbrenner (1979) and the model of the shared influence of Epstein (2009). These two models allow the study of IMPP and IMPE from the activities of parents and teachers, the roles of parents and teachers, and interpersonal relationships. To do this, a quantitative approach was adopted. The study sample consisted of 239 students and parents, and 46 teachers. The results show that the forms of the IMPP, such as school-family communication and learning at home, are favored by the parents and at the same time that they do promote success. The study also confirms that the feeling of parental competence is an important vector in motivating parents to get involved in school and at home. Moreover, the results show that parents' education influences the success and the choice of the parents to get involved with their children more than family income. On the other hand, this study explores the forms of IMPE by asking the teachers what it actually put in place to solicit parental involvement at school and at home. For example, teachers promote family-school communication and information for home learning, which the goal of enabling parents to better help children at home. However, while the findings did not clearly reveal which forms of IMPE support success, this study helped to advance knowledge about the teachers’ role and actions in soliciting parent collaboration. The third objective aims at identifying the forms of IMPP and IMPE from the discourses of parents and teachers, and the strengths and weaknesses in the relationship between the actors. To do so, a qualitative approach was favored, using a sample of 14 primary teachers and 45 parents from 7 primary schools in the national capital, Québec. The results revealed the convergence in the forms of the IMPP and the IMPE as school-family communication and home studying. Moreover, by confronting the reasons, expectations and perceptions of the actors, the results revealed that the main reason for their motivation is the student's success. Generally, parents and teachers are sensitive to the same difficulties that surround their relationship: the distance between school and family, the lack of communication, the loss of parent's confidence in the teacher, lack of time etc. The partners recognized that the climate is generally conducive to collaboration. However, the strengths and weaknesses that emerged from the actors' discourse made it possible to nuance and better understand the tensions surrounding the relationship between parents and teachers.

Full textThis doctoral work is interested in the identical positionings of the teachers and the pupils led by the relation that the social scene in Physical Education establishes between them. These positionings are approached by means of the theories bound to the social categorization and more precisely the theory of the social identity, the theory of the auto-categorization and the conception of the social partitions. If the social partitions establish a continuation of the first two theories, they also rest on their own theoretical foundation, based on social psychology of the language. The goal of the first work was to propose a review of certain principles of the social categorization. This proofreading leaned in particular on the idea that the positionings of every group co-build themselves from the relation intergroup, and that the positions adopted by each are not necessarily symmetric. Following this theoretical construction, three main studies were led to determine the weight of pre-judgments carried by the social scene of the classroom on the processes of social categorization during the mobilization of the identities of teachers and pupils in Physical Education. More precisely, in a context where the teacher is institutionally the hierarchical dominant of the pupils, the pupils do perceive identical spaces allowing them to occupy a satisfactory social position within this relation. The first study, articulating around three sub-studies, tries to determine the weight of the social scene on the effects of social categorization. Contrary to what was expected in this social scene to the advantage of the men (soccer), the women manage to establish a favorable social position for their group by the game of the social categorization. The second study focuses on the various identical insertions on which teachers and pupils in Physical Education can lean during their interactions. The results show, from the analysis of the verbatim of a session of Physical Education that, if the context predetermines their relations on the basis of their social roles, other identical spaces are co-built and invested without questioning the rules of the social scene. Finally, the third study proposes a mapping of the identical positionings which implies the relation intergroup teachers-pupils in physical education. The tool RepMut allows to highlight that at the category-specific level, only teachers are capable of positioning in a satisfactory way. Indeed, the relation to the teacher does not allow pupils to benefit from a satisfactory category-specific position, if it is not by using dimensions of comparison different from that established by the social scene. In conclusion, this work shows that in Physical Education, and prejudice in a more general way, the relation teachers-pupils allows only the first ones to occupy a social place in compliance with that waited. Indeed, in front of the teacher, it seems difficult for pupils to invest the role for which the school expects from them

Full textThis study questions the use of non-verbal communication in the teaching of Physical Education. Non-verbal communication (NVC) sends information to students which sometimes contradicts verbal communication or unwittingly transmits teachers' expectations. Communication issues are addressed in this study under the interactionist’ perspective. Each verbal or non-verbal intervention of the teacher creates an interaction with students, whose purpose may be educational or didactic. Three studies were conducted. The first exploratory study aims at questioning the PE students beliefs about communication, in order to identify their level of knowledge, as well as their awareness of the importance of communication in teaching. Their answers are then compared with those of active teachers. This allows to understand the evolution of beliefs and to highlight teaching practices. The second study is based on the use of an observational grid on NVC during classes. It aims at confirmingthe operation of a functional classification of NVC. A comparison between explaining, doing, and explaining action is carried out using various interviews. Teachers are rarely aware of the types ofcommunication they use in the classroom. They are often surprised with the wide range of NVC they unconsciously use. They often highlight the emotional aspect of the pedagogical relationship, when watching themselves interacting with students in class, while they usually focus on teaching when first questioned about their educational methods. Emphasis is placed on the role and importance oftouching and routines in PE. What students say they feel is compared with what teachers describe. The last study draws attention on contextualized non verbal interactions, through two case studies. Changes seem to occur in the activity, according to the characteristics of students, or those of teachers. There search concludes with proposals both for initial and continuous training of teachers. Improving daily teaching practices can be facilitated through awareness of their beliefs and operational methods in situ

Full textExpression of the body language in learning processes in class between pupils and teachers in primary school in ChinaIn France, many researchers are interested in the issue of body expression in learning process. In class, teacher's body student’s body is in a continual motion, which may cause breaks in teacher-student communication in learning. These discontinuities can also be assets for strengthening communication in learning. In the context of contemporary Chinese primary school, the research we have undertaken efforts to understand the type of relationship that the learner subject establishes with its environment at school, when it is an experiencing success or a difficult situat²ion. This is a fairly new area in China where research on the expression of the body in the teacher started only at the beginning of the XXIst century. Building on the Western theories of nonverbal communication, we undertook experimental studies in China. This study takes into account the multiple dimensions borrowing from various fields such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and those focused on non-verbal communication.Research starts from these three questions. What does the expression of the body in the interactions in favor of the existence of a link between body language and pedagogical relationship? From the point of view of Janine Lafon (Vers une gestion de la séduction dans la relation pédagogique, 1991), what is the place of the body in the pedagogical relationship? To what extent and how does the expression of the body in the interaction between teacher and students determine that there is a link between body language and pedagogical relationship? The issues are addressed from the organization of teaching in the primary school Chao Yang section of the city of Beijing. The research examines the body in the classroom, the teacher's point of view and from the perspective of the student: identify, explain the place of the body and gestures in teaching situations in China. To carry out this research, tin the same primary schools in Beijing, we built two questionnaires to a sample of 204 students and 16 teachers and produced two videos forty-five minutes each, a mathematics course for one, a Chinese language course to the other. To the extent that in the context of Chinese culture it is not usual to show emotions with gestural expressions, we believe that the teacher's gestures:1 - Play a role in furthering the interaction between him and the students (pedagogical relationship),2 - Encourage students to take courses with more attention,3 - Are essential to accompany the oral verbal expression of the master in his teaching practice. In other words,Chinese students would be influenced by the voice of the mistress during class lessons.Chinese students would be influenced by the actions and the physical posture of the teacher.Chinese students are more attentive during class when the teacher uses nonverbal gestures in teaching. There would be a consistency between the opinions of students and those of teachers facing the influence of teacher’s voice on the student. There would be a consistency between the opinions of students and teachers between those nonverbal communication and teaching effectiveness

Full textThe objective of this research was to compare the perceptions of teachers with those of students in regards to the concept of respect in schools. The conceptual framework allows us to better understand and to bring more light on the phenomenon of perception by highlighting variables such as age, sex, school size, culture and values that can influence the perception of individuals. The creation and the verification of the reliability of an instrument in the form of a Likert scale of measurement allowed us to analyze the perceptions of a sample of 226 teachers and 1021 students from seven francophone schools in New Brunswick. Factorial grouping was performed with the data in order to create a typology of perceptions from the participants and compare them according to the respondents’ gender, teachers’ age and experience, the student’s grade, school size and the teacher’s perception of the organizational culture. The results show a significant difference between the perceptions of teachers and students on 39 of the 50 behavior / scenarios proposed. Significant differences also exist in other demographic variables such as school size and the perception of the school’s culture, for both teachers and students. The results suggest that students, in some cases, do not necessarily intend to be disrespectful in their actions. Awareness of this reality on the part of teachers would reduce the risk of unnecessary conflict and foster an environment for constructive learning. It could also help teachers manage conflicts due to differences in perceptions.

Full textThe aim of our work is to provide information on the effect of the use of ICT in teaching and learning chemical reaction. Our work includes several topics supported by detailed analysis of case studies about the role of ICT in the learning of six pairs of students, eight teachers during in service training, and the class practice of a teacher. The theoretical framework, who structured our research method, mainly concerned modelling activity, which is the relation between several levels of knowledge specifically involved when learning with a simulation artefact. The levels that where concerned were theoretical, reconstructed and simulated. The construction of knowledge by learners was characterised from the facets of knowledge, which made possible to list what the learner involved in relation to given concepts, compare learners' knowledge, and finally characterise the teacher's practice in class. Our results show that learning with a simulation coupled with the texts of questioning tasks proposing autonomous situations to learners has been possible at Second, Première and Terminal level (grades 10 – 12) on topics as different as mass balance, thermodynamics, and kinetics. They also put into light that it is possible to interest teachers having them work with students' tasks, as they do not limit their investigation to students' work. Instead, teachers involve their own scientific and professional knowledge. In class, the teacher's interventions involved knowledge that student's do not use when the latter are let in autonomy. Such results stress on the role of teacher during ICT learning

Full textThis thesis aims to reveal the tensions, but also the probable resources, of a system of regulation of the school system which is based on disciplinary procedures and on the delegation of the responsibility of pupils temporarily excluded within devices outside the school. The stories of school experiences, data from various questionnaires, professional postures, institutional logic, experiments and public policies will be put in perspective, in order to shed some light on this phenomenon of opposition of some students to the school system, especially with regard to teachers, figures of the school institution who will also have our interest. After explaining the context of the research and the methodology used, the issues related to the populations of the disadvantaged territories in the sociology of education will be discussed. From the population to the territorial approach, it will be a question of resituating the existence of the devices on the global political scale, to analyze the functioning and the effects of those of our study. The expected effects will be put into play with the effects actually observed and felt by the different actors interviewed. Thus, the shared school experience of the students and the conceptualization of the difficulties and needs then identified will lead us to question their relations with the teachers. In order to make a coherent comparison, the study of teacher perceptions based on the school's territorial affiliations will allow us to account for significant nuances and with a great potential to harm the report to the student. The teacher-pupil relationship can finally be seen as a receptacle for the various tensions that are playing out on a more general scale of the institution and society. As such, this relationship will be considered as the essential pivot to think resources to mobilize for a better experience of each other within the colleges of these territories. Action tracks will then be considered in the light of the few experiments studied elsewhere

Full textSeveral recent studies showed that parents' involvement in their children schooling increases the likelihood that children can progress in optimal way in the field of learning and in the point of view of attitudes. However, even if the institution tends to strengthen the relationships between parents and teachers, both of them do not reach the same communication situations and the instances of school life. As a result, a quite noticeable tension takes place within the educational community. This tension was observed between the actors of the school themselves (teachers and other members of the educational team) and the parents or their representatives. This thesis adopts an approach of ethnographic immersion in the research environment (primary school and kindergarten) to show the interdependence of relationships between parents and teachers and the related stakes. It is based on the observations made in vivo, and the research interviews conducted between teachers and parents, the study on continuation of the students' achievements in order to study the social and scholar construction of the relationships between parents and teachers and to assess the effects of parents involvement in scholar adaptation of students, taking a particular account the parents educational level and their social status. In addition to the differences in the nature and quality of parents-teachers relations, the thesis highlights the relationship between the parental involvement and students adaptation

Full textAn educational activity is a set of actions added and crossed for a specific purpose in advance and that is beyond a year of assessement. This process is, on the one hand shows a unique product such as a new learning in terms of skills and knowledge and, secondly, induces reorganization schemes, knowledge and skills in favor of another layer of stability in Piaget's sense. The construction of knowledge is an individual task performed by the learners themselves. however, the teacher plays the role of pedagogical, cognitive and social mediator. This role requires the professional skills of the teacher which should be sometimes both strong and delicate times, solid because it needs to have sufficient knowledge of the subject matter and the teaching of this material, and delicate because education is a work that is necessarily based on the affects and emotions. This work depends, on the one hand, on the representations that the teacher does on students in the three status, firstly, a student as a social status, secondly, a learner as a teaching status and thirdly, a child as a psychological status. From another perspective, he relies on all the other factors that may be operating in the educational activity such as space in a general sense and planning. The representations that the teacher has on his inspired pupils, consciously and / or unconsciously, have served many factors (or are serving) that forging his personality and directing his own choice, such as the socio- economic and cultural factors and political sphere. These factors consists of what is called the input representations of the teacher. The outputs are not only different in relational and educational terms of behavior but also on instant choice of decisions. The pedagogic activity is a communicative task and a set of relationships. Indeed, it relies on the one hand on the academic content, and on the other hand on the behavioral aspects of the intervening people such as teachers and students as a group and individuals. The nature of these representations, that each party has, which an influence on the other helps to direct, in a radical way, the process of learning and ownership. These representations are triggers in any teacher. In this activity, we try to develop the idea of the representations that the teacher has on his student, as a learner and as a child, influenced by politics and economic socio-cultural factors, guide its educational choices in terms of relationship and behavioral communication. It consists of three distinct parts .The first part is a theoretical part where we tried to reflect further on the different key concepts and build any relationships between them .In the second part, we used to consider successively highlight the significance of historical key, socio-economic, anthropological and political factors that determine the intrinsic fingerprints, consciously or unconsciously, the personality of the teacher. In the third part, the analytical part, we objectively analyse the quantitative and qualitative analyzed the collected data. The results allowed us to validate the central hypothesis and the four responses that we proposed. This research is used to improve the reflection on the development of relationships within a class group. This improvement is, in the well-being, the expertise and know- being of the student. Therefore, in the learning action, the role of the school is no longer limited to academic learning but will be a workshop where children learn how to build a real relationship into knowledge and life

Full textThis research focuses on the field of didactics of mathematics. It has two main objectives: the first is to understand how the use of the concepts of fraction and proportion in intra and interdisciplinary contexts can affect the learning and teaching of mathematics, science and technology as well as physics and chemistry. The second is to grasp whether the learning of geometry, probability, energy efficiency, concentration, stoichiometry , optical reflection, and uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion transforms the fraction and the proportion of the object to the tool (Douady, 1986). In order to achieve these goals, this research consists in identifying the nature of teacher-student interactions around the concepts of fraction and proportion taken in different contexts. The concepts of the fraction and the proportion play a crucial role in the training program of the Quebec school (MELS, 2001). They illustrate the intra and interdisciplinary character of their usages in mathematics and other disciplines. This diversity of use in view of intradisciplinary links (probability, statistics, homothetic, etc.) and interdisciplinary links (in science and technology, chemistry, biology, economics, etc.) makes their constructions fundamental. The conceptualization of fraction and proportion is based on various significances of the fraction (part of a whole, measure, ratio, quotient and operator) and on its assimilation (Proulx & Bednarz, 2009). However, developing the meaning of these two concepts represents a major challenge for students. This learning complexity is shared by researchers in didactics of mathematics (Brousseau, 1998; Kieren, 1988; G. Vergnaud, 1983, 1990) and by several teachers . This research studies the use of the status of fraction / proportion as per the dialectic tool / object (Douady, 1986) in intra and interdisciplinary contexts. Based on a qualitative / interpretative research, our analysis focuses mainly on the interactions between the teacher and the students as well as their productions. Our results on the nature of interactions between the teacher and the students and the task brought to light the didactic incidents (Roditi, 2005), the identification of breaks in the didactical contract (Brousseau, 1998) and the support given to students according to the types of proximities (Bridoux & al., 2015). Firstly, the analysis of interactions related to learning allowed us to identify the possible origin of the students’ errors and their characteristics which are grouped into three parts. The first part is linked to the data of the task statement when moving from a register of semiotic representation to another (Duval, 1993). When interpreting the data, the errors noted appear to be related to superfluous data and to certain terms used in the instructions. The second part is related to conceptual errors and generally affects proportional reasoning. When interpreting the ratio fraction, especially in the contexts of trigonometry and energy efficiency, the fraction is considered a quantity without establishing a relation between the numerator and the denominator. The third procedural aspect is related to the application of the cross-product procedure and the rules related to the various operations on fractions. In addition, this analysis allowed us to qualify the students' understanding of procedural according to the conceptual analysis of Bergeron and Herscovics (1989). In the mathematics class, the understanding of probability is interpreted according to the conceptual analysis performed by Savard (2008) and the understanding of trigonometry is examined according to the conceptual analysis performed by Sonja De kee, Dionne and Mura (1996). Secondly, the analysis of interactions linked to teaching allowed us to classify the types of help that teachers provide to students. We have categorized them according to three types of proximities (Bridoux et al., 2015): ascending proximities, descending proximities and horizontal proximities. We noted a predominance of the use of horizontal proximities among the four teachers. These horizontal proximities are very local in nature and their cognitive reach is limited (Bridoux et al., 2015, p. 22), thus contributing to the maintenance of the didactic contract. The effects of the didactic contract such as the Topaz effect, the effect of misunderstood expectation and the actor's paradox also influenced learning by maintaining the didactic contract. We have noted a frequent use of the Topaz effect, which in addition to maintaining the didactic contract, reduces the responsibility of the students and creates, in the student, expectations of solution from the teacher. Thus, this mode of intervention presents the cross-product procedure as the solution to the proposed tasks. The teacher/student’s relationship with knowledge also seems to influence learning and teaching in each discipline of our experimentation. The teaching seems to focus more on formal procedures than on understanding the underlying reasoning behind the concepts of fraction and proportion. Thus, students' understanding, and reasoning are abandoned in favor of procedures with rapid application. This relation to knowledge with regard to the concepts of fraction and proportion seems to be characterized by a desire to optimize the time devoted to their subject. This social dimension, although it responds to didactic time (Mercier, 1985, 1992), does not seem to contribute to the construction of the meaning of the concepts of fraction and proportion. By not being invited to use these concepts and develop their meaning, students could develop an instrumental relationship to knowledge. Finally, thanks to our results of student productions and verbatim, we were able to highlight the nature of the use of the fraction / proportion according to the dialectic as a tool or object (Douady, 1986). Analysis of the interventions of the four teachers, which are characterized by a predominance of horizontal proximities shows that these did not favor the transition from the fraction / the object proportion to the fraction / the tool proportion. This analysis revealed to us that the interpretations of the concepts of fraction, percentage, part-whole proportion and independent quantity proportion are still under construction and they are located at the "research" phase according to the operating cycle of the DOO. This analysis highlights many errors and confirms that the students' knowledge mainly relates to the procedures for carrying out the tasks. These errors show that their reasoning is based on the use of these concepts as "tools in development" in the resolution of tasks. Thus, these “tools in development” are more particularly observable in the “old” and “research” phases according to the operating cycle of the DOO. The notion of fraction and proportion play a significant role in learning and teaching in intra and interdisciplinary contexts and constitute a major challenge for students. This is how this study made explicit the fact that students use the concepts of fraction and proportion as a “tool in development” (Douady, 1986) when learning geometry, probability and energy efficiency, concentration, stoichiometry, optical reflection and uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion. As the fraction and the proportion are still in the state of a "tool in development" (Douady, 1986), their use in situations involving these two concepts influences the learning and teaching of these subjects.

Full textThe interest taken in this study was to find signals leading to a more accurate idea of the teacher and of the adolescent pupil. To do this, we have laid stress on the way the pupils judge their actual teacher and on their expectations of the ideal teacher. We have taken as great an interest in the way these two levels of the image -actual and ideal- interfere on each other to be then able to evaluate the meaning given to the word teacher by the pupils. The study of the teacher's image among the youth has also allowed us to show the educational relationship - pupil-teacher - actually lived through by the adolescent pupil in a constantly-moving society such as morocco

Full textHow self-assessment methodology is supporting the development of learner autonomy philosophy and how does it fit in the current « learning to learn» trend? Our study will be based on the concepts of interaction, scaffolding and habitus as framing elements, extracted from interactionist and socio-cognitive approaches applied to the field of teaching and learning languages. From field work conducted in Iran based on ethnographic methodology, we assume that if, in a context of education as it operates in Iran, an innovative concept as self-assesment only consists of implementing tools without taking in account the representation of the actors, then it will maintain culturally rooted practices, despite the positive sense openly accepted of using imported teaching methodology. Combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, our research relies on data collected through questionnaires and interviews, in order to enable us to propose a model of analysis and intervention in the field of teacher training

Full textOur exploratory research, referred to as descriptive, explanatory and comprehensive, consists of exploring a rarely debated area: the verbal evaluation of students by teachers to immediately improve learning and the difficulties observed. We hypothesize that in teaching - learning situations, the teacher is subject to constraining factors that must be overcome in order for the class to move forward: they must ensure that the majority of students build the knowledge expected or meet the educational and didactic objectives planned for the lesson. We will devise a model for the practice of the assessment, using the interrelation of the act of the formative and verbal assessment by the teacher, the representation of their assessment and the situational and peripheral environment. The data obtained, shows the organisation of the constituent patterns of the interactions between the formative and verbal assessment and the answers (or questions) of the students within the determinants of the class; a few encourage a regulation of the process of learning whilst others contribute to the progression of the didactic process. The research into the organisation of these patterns also highlights the presence of discriminating informations (discernements) with regards to the situational context, the concerns of the teacher focused the construction of precise disciplinary content, guided the timing of the class and the socio-cultural aims attained. The latter highlights the understanding of the difficulties of students and the completion of school programmes in years seconde and première scientifique in France

Full textStudents' perceptions of their relationships with their teachers and their attitudes towards them are known to be associated with student academic success, particularly for students with an immigrant background. Despite the increase in immigration and the interest in the academic experiences of these students, a limited amount of quantitative research has examined how these students perceive their teachers’ attitudes and practices in Quebec. The aim of this study is, therefore, to examine students’ perceptions of the level of closeness and conflict in their relationships with teachers, as well as their perceptions of teachers' expectations of success and negative feedback towards them. More specifically, the study examines whether there are distinctions in these perceptions between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation students and between students of Haitian, North African and Canadian origin. It also explores whether there is an interaction between generational status and the region of origin on students' perceptions. Data were collected from 819 students in 8 different high schools in the province of Quebec. Results show that 2nd generation students, compared to their 3rd generation peers, consider their relationships with teachers to be less warm. Also, 1st generation students perceive slightly higher expectations of success among their teachers than non-immigrant students. These students also feel that they are receiving more negative feedback from teachers. In addition, students from Haiti report less closeness with teachers and, for students of 2nd generation, they are more likely to perceive lower teachers’ expectations toward them. The implications of these results for practice and research are discussed.

Full textLes amis de Zippy teaching program for coping skills aims to promote mental health in junior elementary students. This study is a secondary analysis done with data derived from the program evaluation. The general goal is to verify if belongingness to the intervention group is linked to a better class relational climate at the end of the school year, as perceived by the teachers, while controlling for the class relational climate before the implantation of the program. The class relational climate refers to the relationships between the students and the relationship between the students and the teacher. The moderating effects of behaviors management and educational practices are analyzed as well. The sample is composed of 35 self-selected teachers no randomly separated into two groups. The following scales from the elementary school QES, teacher’s version, were used: relationships between the students, relationship between the students and the teacher, behaviors management and educational practices. Multiple linear regressions revealed that, generally, group belongingness does not significantly explain the quality of the class relational climate. However, an interaction effect with behaviors management is identified. When teachers have a hard time managing their class, the Les amis de Zippy program is associated with a less favorable relational climate between the students and the teacher then in the comparison group. However, these preliminary results need to be studied more thoroughly because they may be due to uncontrolled external variables.
