Full textThis dissertation analyzes the more than 70-year trajectory of the actor Sebastião Bernardes de Souza Prata, better known as Grande Otelo (1917-1993). From one angle, it contributes to the consideration of different moments of Brazilian cinema, taking into account that the actor was an integral part of the Brazilian cinematographic imaginary from the 1930s to the 1990s, in the films of Cinédia and Sonofilmes, in Its All True (the unfinished project of Orson Welles in Brazil), in productions of Rio de Janeiro (Carioca) Realism, in the chanchada films of Atlântida, in New Cinema (Cinema Novo), and in Marginal Cinema. From another angle, observing this trajectory allows for reflection on the manner in which race relations and their intersections with the question of gender and body of the artists, black or white are reinterpreted in accordance with the logic of the field of cinematography. The unifying thread of the analysis is a complex equation between force lines that surpass this logic and cinemas own mechanisms, used to differentiate, rank, and hierarchize actors and schools. In undertaking this, concepts employed include structure of feelings of whiteness, racial stereotypes and persona, and the internal examination of the films which opens a path for revealing racist cinematographic discourses as well as anti-racist strategies. The itinerary of Grande Otelo thus makes it possible to examine the strong dialogue between the racial imaginary of Hollywood and its translation by Brazilian companies between the 1930s and the 1950s, as well as alternative representations of black people in Its All True, in Carioca Realism, and in the film Rio, Zona Norte, by Nelson Pereira dos Santos. In contrast, the disappearance of the actor in the first films of New Cinema illuminates the perspectives of Glauber Rocha and Carlos Diegues on black people. Both directors chose actors with body structures, physionomies, and performances of masculinity different from those of Grande Otelo, such as Antonio Pitanga. The return of Otelo in Macunaíma, by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, allows for a discussion of a reflexive moment in Brazilian cinema, in which the impasses of Brazil become explicit in the reformulation of old figures such as the malandro and in the renewed interlocution with the black movement, among others. Finally, the study discusses the deepening of an internal dialogue in the films of Rogério Sganzerla and Júlio Bressane, which make Grande Otelo a historical witness to Brazilian cinema. The prolific actor would then make possible reflection on race relations, in its intersections with the topics of gender and body, as well as on cinema in Brazil.

through a politico-historical analysis of the intimacies between the United States governments and Hollywood cinema during the Cold War. The working assumption while projecting this study is as follows
the Hollywood cinema and the United States governments enjoyed a close relationship during the period in question. The latter actively involved in the inscription of the wills and desires of US Foreign policymakers into the American popular culture. The thesis will also extend the discussion to a politic cultural assessment of how the United States, through the films, represents and re-presents its superiority, and more importantly, how these films affect and shape the spectators perceptions about its foreign policy.

Full textThe difficulties encountered by political theory in providing a general foundation for democratic order lead its mainstream tradition to a more or less explicit requirement of social homogeneity that minority issues risk making irrelevant. Detailed analysis of British ethnic minority mobilization and of its politicization shows their interdependence and the close relation between the analytical and programmatic dimensions of their sociological understanding. This underlines the political content of identity processes and their indeterminate nature in a structurally complex environment characterized by dematerialization and enhanced reflexiveness of social consciousness. The theoretical necessity to take account of these factors means abandoning both the traditional logic of homogeneity and the new celebration of heterogeneity. This leads beyond the abstract foundation of democratic order towards a political conception of the management of diversity. At once inescapable and threatening, heterogeneity requires not so much theoretical subtlety as practical prudence

Full textThis thesis deals with the question of the conditions that made possible the unlikely entry of Aborigines into the Australian political field at the end of the 1960s. Drawing both on a socio-historical approach, which interrogates State practices of "identification", and on an ethnographic pont of view, focusing on the ordinary practices of individuals, this project is organised around three parts. The first two parts deal with the processes of social relegation to which Aborigines were subjected in colonial Australia. They attempt to reconstruct the system of "race relations" that was prevailing during most of the 20th century (focussing on the production of categories and on the power relationships between those categories). The third part details the trajectories of the actors of the Black Power movement, in order to understand the social conditions that made it possible for them to 'rebel' and enter the political field

Abstract : This research sets out to analyse the rendition of fixed expressions (Moon, 1998) in dubbed and subtitled versions of the films Madagascar (2005) and Ice Age (2002), taking into account the asymmetrical relations between countries and languages. Asymmetrical relations are manifested by globalisation in its centrifugal and centripetal forces (Cronin, 2009) and have a translational counterpart in Venuti?s (1995) notions of domestication and foreignisation. The objective of the study is to verify how the translation of fixed expressions is dealt with in dubbing and subtitling methods in terms of domestication and foreignisation, which are considered means to undermine and reinforce the asymmetrical relations. A cross-analysis between dubbing and subtitling is carried out by means of parallel corpus (Baker, 1995). Contrasting dubbing and subtitling is relevant in a context of asymmetrical relations on account of a recent change in Brazilian public preference for dubbing over subtitling (Pesquisa Datafolha, 2013). Results show that the subtitled versions in the corpus, rather than the dubbed ones, are more prone to adopt foreignising strategies with regard to the translation of fixed expression. Additionally, there have been identified, in the subtitled versions of the films, translation instances that avoid the adoption of domestication strategies in spite of the lack of impediment. This seems to imply that, occasionally, the subtitled versions under scrutiny deliberately move away from target language fixed expressions.

Full textRésumé : This subject comes within the scope of a very contemporary issue : the evolution of western societies, which became multicultural and multiracial as a result of the acceleration of migratory movements after 1945. The nature of this thesis is twofold. It is historical in certain respects. Indeed, the status of Bristol as a port, her geographic closeness to the continent, her implication in transatlantic trade, made it compulsory to turn to history, so as to highlight both continuities and changes in her attitude to religious and ethnic minorities. In other respects, this thesis' content is also sociological. It is in keeping with the tradition of the sociology of communities (whose object are human groups in transition),a tradition started in the early 20th century by the pioneers of the Chicago School of sociology. Indeed , the second half of the thesis is the outcome of two phases of fieldwork. The first, whose scope was general, was carried out between 1995 and 1997. The second which was carried out i 2000, was more specific and was circumscribed to a Bristol inner city, namely Easton

Full textChicago rates first among other large american cities as far as segregation is concerned. Studying race relations in such a context thus implies the analysis of relations between communities as well as the rules and political or socio-economic implications of these relations. Chicago's periods of economic growth have given shape to the city's ethnic and class make-up along with the decisions made in the past by major institutional actors. Sociological realities in chicago show that one of the most striking consequences of segregation is the lack of social contacts. Large disparities exist in the job market, in education, and in access to health care. Institutional disengagement, spatial isolation, and the lack of information, as well as racial discrimination can explain these disparities. In chicago, urban violence is often related in public opinion to the existence of an urban underclass. Eventhough studies about violence have shown it is often an answer to a series of political and economic changes leading to class polarization and urban dualization. In the mean time the ethnic poor are the less represented in chicago politics. Alliances--especially between latinos and afro-americans-- are complex and changing coallitions. Although the two communities have much in common, the hispanic leaders tend to claim their part of social progress while afro-americans fear they take advantage of their own past experience

Full textOur thesis analyses Michael Jackson’s artistic production, through marketing, stylistic and visual aspects, targeting racial dynamics and tensions which invigorate its narrative layers. The first part is about the colorist charts and the ubiquitous posture of jacksonian opuses, recontextualized against american society and racialized record industry. The second part analyzes the stylistic eclectism of Jackson’s pop music and the way he uses the conventions from the musical and racial categorization. Finally, the third part is about racial dynamics and tensions carried by visual productions (video clip, artistic image) and lyrics, as elements of identity fundations of Jackson’s crossover and his federative appeal to an international and transracial audience

Full textIn this doctoral work, I reflect on contemporary Brazilian society and how its history has been marked by Portuguese colonization and slavery, which gained considerable ground under the transatlantic treaty. By viewing interbreeding as the guarantor of social unity, thereby keeping alive the myth of a racial democracy, contemporary society politically and institutionally recognizes that populations differ on social and racial grounds. As a result, a latent but very real racism exists, as well as multiple, increasingly apparent inequalities, of which Brazilian classrooms are a reflection. Under the ethnicization of Brazilian public policy and the introduction of affirmative action, which is a tool for a politics of positive discrimination, institutional means were put in place at the turn of the 21st century to reduce inequalities and other consequences of racism, such as a system of racial quotas and the introduction of mandatory African and Afro-Brazilian cultural-historical studies; and all this in an effort to better integrate the black and mixed Brazilian population. This work uses decolonial thinking to prove that, deep down in the Brazilian social-historical imagination, the coloniality of power, knowledge, and being, racialized social relations not only exists, but is also being perpetuated under the guise of a Eurocentric and Occidentalist vision, as well as a norm implicitly rooted in the ideology of “whitewashing”.The work is based on a multi-referential approach, which blends together a socio-historical approach, the clinical process and the theoretical framework of Institutional Analysis. It also puts forward, through field research in Ribeirao Preto, a town in the state of Sao Polo, ethnographical observations and comprehensive interviews, all of which will allow me to present a dual analysis of my field research.Analyzing words, speeches, behaviors, and lived experiences is crucial to understanding that these different forms of coloniality manifest themselves in the daily lives of people. It also proves that there is a tension between institutional aims and the putting in place, in real life, of a politics that calls itself into question and favors what I call an “integrating-exclusive” paradigm. This paradigm is illustrated by the necessity of auto-identifying and categorising a part of the Brazilian population, in an attempt to benefit from the production of inclusive measures perceived and experienced as excluding and unjust. Finally, this work is an attempt at once to conceptualize the notion of bio-power, and to reflect on the educational stakes rooted in attempts to direct us towards a decoloniality process, by way of a critical perspective capable of calling out and pointing fingers at the destruction of social imaginaries. In doing so, we hope to transform the institutionalization of this implicit, yet very real, paradigm

The research aims to uncover the social representation of the Public Relations professional in cinema, taking as an object of study the narratives that bring as central characters the PR professional, through filmic analysis. It is intended, at first, to analyze the relation between cinema, reality and social representation, verifying how they operate the processes of production of meaning in film, based on the theories of Christian Metz. Then it is intended to conduct the analysis of narratives that have public relations characters in its plots, checking which image and social position assumed by the characters. From this perspective, it is discussed the image and professional representation of public relations through cinematographic narratives, drawing on the concept of Social Representation coined by Serge Moscovici. It is intended to discuss what are the characteristics attributed to this professional and the social dynamics involving their profession in the context of cinematographic narratives.

Full textSOME LIKE IT HOT: female bodies in the cinema screens has like theme the female body thought through scenes cut four movies out: Some Like It Hot (United States, 1959), directed by Billy Wilder; Transamerica (United States, 2005), by Duncan Tucker; Elvis & Madonna (Brasil,2010), by Marcelo Laffitte and La Piel que Habito (Espanha, 2011), by Pedro Almodóvar. The cinema, taken up as one of the critical spaces to explore the discourses about femininity, not only teaches the ways of experiencing it, but is a powerful space to think the sexuality and gender positions of the characters that are in the screens. So, the movies constitute a powerful instrument to suspend these same gender and sexuality positions that often establish hierarchies, binaries and tautologies between genders. Thus, this research was mobilized mainly by the following question: How dislocate through scenes of four movies the relations between femininity, body, biopower and truth? Therefore, this research was inserted in the poststructuralist analysis field. To think the female body, was adopted the Gender Studies and Queer Theory , close of Judith Butler and Michel Foucault theories, as well as, it was done some approaches to the Cultural Studies. As to methodological strategy, it was proposed a ‘scenes ethnocartography’, which is a compilation of the ‘screen ethnography’ and cartography. With the theoretical references adopted, the analytical perspective chosen and the scenes cut movies out it was possible to set four axes of analysis. In a first axis, I thought the way of female characters are manufactured in the cinema screens through lighting and colors techniques as well as the codes that governing the film industry. In a second axis, I discussed the female body as an effect of speeches. In the third axis of analysis, I discussed the articulation of the femininity with a neoliberal way of being in the world. In the last axis of analysis, I discussed the body ‘pedophilization’. Thus, the femininity was taken as a ‘biopolitics fiction’, because it can be changing from one culture to another, from one epoch to another, as to be effect of discourses, practices and knowledge.

Full textThe theoreticians of the cinematic voice, such as Michel Chion, Mary Ann Doane and Kaja Silverman, do not address vocal representation as an issue of gender and its relationship to race and postcolonialism. To the contrary, two contemporary filmmakers, Julie Dash and Trinh T. Minh-ha, use their “caméra-stylo” to deconstruct the dominant paradigm of the voice which has spectators believe that the image is at the source of the voices they hear. The films, Illusions and Daughters of the Dust by Dash, and Reassemblage, Naked Spaces and Surname Viet Given Name Nam by Trinh, show us how the cinematic voice is a construction. The stakes are high: white men use this vocal illusion as a lever to impose control over the world of epistemology. As an alternative, Dash and Trinh propose a feminist paradigm. The transcendent masculine voice is replaced by the immanent and polyphonic voices of women of color. Dash reveals the cinematic techniques of vocal reproduction, and she practices a classical editing that reaches for fidelity. The voices of her characters envelope the spectators. Trinh brings to the screen an understanding of the “architecture” of cinematic language, and her editing techniques suspend continuity. The spectator’s own voice must continually intervene in the construction of meaning. Through various techniques (synchronized/a-synchronized voice), the women characters come forward to witness the violence of men. Their stories reveal that the justice of the Law of the Father is as much an illusion as the cinematic voice. Women of color therefore take up the voice as a political tool: it holds the promise of changing mentalities and, in turn, the laws of city

Full textThrough the study of cinematographic relationships between France and the GDR from 1946 to 1992, this PhD thesis highlights how cinema constituted a meeting area between the East and the West. Initiated after the Second World War by film professionals sharing the same communist commitment, film exchanges between France and the GDR are quickly confronted with the geopolitical situation, in particular the Jack of official diplomatic relations between the two states. Thanks to several figures of conveyor, peculiar collaborations could succeed, such as the realization of coproductions, the diffusion of DEF A films in Cannes or in film clubs and the regular French participation in the festival of Leipzig. Franco-East-German film relations often go beyond the binational framework and extend to other horizons. Mao's China and the Algerian war thus constitute areas where French and East-German filmmakers look at. If France and its history inspire several DEFA films, only two French documentaries focus on the GDR, before and after May 1968. This imbalance increases even more from the l 970's onwards. The official recognition of the GDR by France in 1973 is accompanied by the institutionalization of cinematographic relationships, which simplifies the circulation of films on both sides of the Iron Curtain, while at the same time increasing its asymmetry. It is only after the fall of the Wall that France becomes interested in the fate of the former GDR, by producing several films about the post-1989 period and putting the DEFA in the limelight of festivals and retrospectives

Subsequently, we sought the company of authors of the decoloniality, in order to get closer to the particularities that concern the Brazilian population regarding the issues of subalternities, such as Achille Mbembe, Gayatri Spivak, Conceição Evaristo, among others. In the first chapter we present the different uses that the notion of experience gains in the texts, emphasizing the difference between two semantic fields: the first, where it will mean what the subject lives or experiences; and the second, which we understand to be stronger and more relevant to the field of mental health, where it will mean what remains of the crossing of a danger. Our dive into these publications allowed us to state that GAM has been an experience for its participants, be they users, workers, researchers. In the second chapter, we approach the different ways in which the GAM strategy accesses the experience of the subjects in this meeting between users, family members, workers and researchers in the field of mental health, showing the collectivization effects produced there. In the third chapter we point to the invisibility and silencing of the approach to ethnic-racial issues in the GAM strategy, while locating situations that demonstrate resistance and user exits to cope with oppression, so that we can recognize in GAM a potential anti-racist and may develop and strengthen

Full textThis thesis studies the Carnival of Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) and the Independence Day Festivities in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in order to understand how different ways of celebrating give rise to political, economic, and cultural tensions in these two Latin American cities. This thesis argues that these festivities involve an antagonist relationship between an hegemonic form of celebration— associated with the practices and discourses of the urban elites— and other diverse, dissident, and often marginalized forms of participating. In this way, the carnival and festivities in Salvador and Cartagena are not only spaces of cultural encounter through symbols, dance, and music, but also political spaces in which identities, and racial and class relations are contested and reconfigured. Furthermore, these celebrations create an opportunity for different groups to raise harsh criticism to their own economic and political position in a broader urban context that is highly shaped by the global tourism industry and the interventions of the multicultural state

The present work has as main objective to analyze the discourses carried in books of literature from a post-structuralist perspective and Foucault (2014a, 2014b) on the articulation between discourse, power and knowledge. We will use for analysis the books of children's literature produced after the promulgation of the Law 10.639 / 2003, which established the inclusion in the official curriculum of the school system of the "History and Afro-Brazilian Culture" theme, seeking to understand how discourses and textual and iconographic forms may or may not bring a burden intentional, stereotyped, naturalized and constituted of what it is to be black these days. We will discuss if the children's literary genre can opportunize through narrative, reflections about the representations of the black and the black contained in the works of children's literature under the light of the following categories: oppressed, black conscientization and identity. Our hypothesis that after the implementation of Law 10.639 / 2003, the black and black characters keep the operationalization of racism in children's literature. Of theoretical-methodological point of view, the research is qualitative, of an ethnographic nature. We will look at twenty-seven works belonging to the archive of the Paulo Municipal Library Duarte (a library with a thematic collection in African and Afro-Brazilian culture), with the to understand how black and black characters are represented in children's literature; our object of study. In order to achieve the objective, we take the representations of black and black characters contained in the twenty-seven works analyzed throughout the work. We highlight after the research that of the twenty-seven books analyzed, two of them present normative and biased discourse; which demonstrates that our initial hypothesis does not confirms.

This Master’s thesis relate some relational dynamics of Aboriginal youth of the Kimberley – which is situated at the top end of Western Australia – specifically from Kununurra and Kalumburu. It results from a pre-fieldwork (2010) and a field research (2012). It is through sport, especially Australian football (Australian Rules Football) and basketball, as well as playful activities, including dance, that I could account for the peculiarities of these young Aborigines. Other spheres of their lives also caught my attention, mainly the importance of the extended family in aboriginal forms of sociality and solidarity, and relationships, often difficult, with the dominant society (Euro-Australians). Using an overview of the wide but also local socio-historical context – distinguishing the semi-urban life (Kununurra) versus remote community life (Kalumburu) – I could better explain various aspects of their contemporaneity.

Full textThis research is made accompanied by contemporary brazilian films that elaborate in their forms an expressive implication with the territories they film. Cinema becomes an act co-engineered with countless other tasks involved in the elaboration of dwelling: image is a dweller practice that articulates itself to other dweller practices. To dwell is, this way, a gesture that may concern to cinema following distinct procedures, whether in works that bring out a more direct relation between image and the dweller action in the present, or in the research of forms of sharing between dwelling and filmed subjectivities, or even in the effort to outline imaginative strategies that speculate about dwelling and are capable of returning to daily life a potent energy, of an aesthetic and political matrix. Home and Neighborhood generate, as such, in each film, distinct ways of engaging with present and territory. By means of an operation of listening, the research task situates itself into perceiving how the films flexibilize those words, that imply at first, spaces, places, in direction to perspectives that contrive modes: of making cinema and of making dwelling, together and indissociable. The works are the following: Casa da Vovó (2008), by Victor de Melo; Ficar me trouxe até aqui (2016), by Renata Cavalcante; Ela volta na quinta (2014) and Quintal (2015), by André Novais Oliveira; Europa (2011), Mauro em Caiena (2012) and A Festa e os Cães (2015), by Leonardo Mouramateus; A vizinhança do tigre (2014), by Affonso Uchoa; Na missão, com Kadu (2016), by Pedro Maia de Brito, Aiano Bemfica, Kadu Freitas; A cidade é uma só? (2011) and Branco sai preto fica (2014), by Adirley Queirós
Full textTo conceive a movie as a document and as a historic tool is important nowadays, when images are considered fundamental in the acceptance and reception of specific purposes in the teaching level or in people s everyday lives. This dissertation intends to study the representative connections of the American approach policies in the 40 s through a cinematographic perspective, especially through the Disney movies Saludos, amigos! (1942) and The three caballeros (1945). These movies highlight some aspects of the Argentinean and Brazilian history, as well as of some other Latin-American countries, revealing the American impressions about South American countries and Mexico during World War II. This period featured the approximation of the North American and Latin American politics. This dissertation intends to provide a critical analysis of the historical and political fields in relation to the cultural and cinematographic universes, highlighting their closeness and detachments, taking in consideration the theoretic studies that relate the movies as an advertisement tool, spreader of ideologies, of moral codes, of philosophical divagations and of political propositions that would result in the spectator s acceptance and abidance.
(1942) e The three caballeros (1945).

It was used as an instrument to collect the data, interviews with four teachers of the discipline of History of public high schools, in addition to a bibliographic research. The content analysis technique was used to cut and analyze the interviews. The results of the research revealed that the approach of the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture by teachers, in the perspective of the law, in the context of the education of ethnic-racial relations, happens in a very limited way, with many interferences, fragilities and difficulties. He also demonstrated that the work towards Law 10.639 / 03 does not depend only on the doing and wanting of teachers, but on changes in the school's exclusionary structures, on new practices and pedagogical rituals that speak about the racial issue, including it in the planning, Political Pedagogical Project and school routines, teacher training, material resources, among other things.

The research is about the film atmosphere as environment, characters and relations creator among the film elements of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Wong Kar Wai. It proposes and attentive look and feeling at what may start afections and, this way, dissects its plastic and dramatic, concrete and abstract composition articulated in favor of the alteration of the sensibility and of an unique understanding of the narrative. So, while admitting the articulation of the plastic, dramatic, concrete and abstract atmospheres in the characters creation, relations establishment and film environment composition on the proposed terms, I do not intend to decompose and devise the technical elements related to them in the analyses of In the Mood for Love (2000), but notice how they act in each one of the space/time of the film in the concept of invisibility of a film atmosphere. It is from this fusion that, in its whole and not only in parts, the narrative transforms itself in experience. Consequently, as experience, it is also necessary to consider the relation of these elements with the spectator. Therefore, in this research, I take as starting point my own references about this experience.

Full textThe study of newly released films from the ‘South’ opens up interesting new perspectives for research in cinema studies. These films not only inform us about international relations, public policy and the art house cinema market in France but have also led to some original conclusions. This thesis is based on a study of 430 long feature films released in France between 1990 and 2007 from Subsaharan Africa, the MENA region, Iran, Central Asia, Asia and Latin America. In this dissertation, we propose:- an analysis of the construction of cultural diplomacy in the context of bilateral and multilateral foreign politics. This treatment operates at the levels of French and European politics and examines the place of cinema with respect to the agencies that finance film production [Fonds Sud, HBF, ACPFILMS…] as well as the larger context of external funding for audio-visual productions in general;- an assessment of the construction of public policy concerning film, with an examination of the successive strategies for coping with professional activities and the market. Here, we examine industrial relations and cooperative decision making as well as the reflections concerning the conception of cultural activity and, above all, art house cinema as a project, movement and system then later as a specialist form of production and distribution;- a study of the trajectories of a selected group of film cultures from the south. This study turns around two issues; the purported symmetry between the market of the country where the film is made and the French market as measured by production statistics [China, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico] and the question of ‘small cinemas’ [Tunisia, Lebanon, Morocco, sub-Saharan Africa]

Full textAlthough the study of the memories of slavery has still attracted little attention among scholars in Haïti, the first country to be freed from the jaws of transatlantic slavery. Existing synthesis work on the subject are incomplete and take little these memories into account as being of heritage. The present thesis aims to fill this gap and to better our understanding of the situation, the entanglement and the stakes of the memories of slavery in Haiti today. Drawing from a large variety of oral and written sources, the study reveals a two parallel currents of thought characterized by, on the one hand, a lacunar amnesia of slavery and its social consequences (poverty, problem of color, social exclusion), and, on the other hand, by a hypermnesia of glorious historical events (war of independence, slave revolts and liberation). The perceptions of Haitians are divided around the tangible and intangible elements present in public and social space and these divergent views remain at the heart of numerous controversies which shape a wide range of memories: prestigious memory, traumatizing memory, memory of guilt, memory of victimization, memory of reclamation, and consensual memory. Religious practices such as voodoo form the very apotheosis of a memorial occultism connected to this past. All of these memories shed light on the main issues -historic and mnemonic, cultural and religious, social and political, and economic - of the processes of heritage making in Haiti today. The consequences of slavery are very profond and complex. It is difficult to fully appreciate their full depth. Because the memory of slavery is like an iceberg, we only perceive the summit: the base is submerged and hidden under water of forgetfulness. This thesis throws light on the role of these multiple memories in the construction of Haitian identity, torn between recognition and non-recognition of the ancestry of slavery and the appropriation of the ancestry of a free man. Through its memories of slavery, Haiti teaches us that valorizing heritage - beyond the oft-mentioned aspects of “living together” and tourism - is also a tool for making demands, for perpetual combat, for questioning social inequalities, and for resistance. This thesis also teaches us that the heritage status of the memories of slavery in Haitian society today must accommodate the trauma suffered pain, the pride of having triumphed over this tragedy and the consequences of

Full textThis dissertation examines the political strategy used by President Barack Obama to address racial inequalities in a context dominated by a rejection of social policies in general, and race-specific initiatives in particular. This analysis is based on the example of health care reform. The legislation known as Obamacare, passed in 2010, which is composed of two Acts, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, was the result of a careful political strategy and a heated political battle. Obamacare was enacted in a context of strong partisan polarization around issues of social policies, racial inequalities, and the scope of government intervention. To achieve meaningful, yet politically acceptable, legislation, Obama chose a race-neutral, but issue-focused approach. This approach was mainly based on considerations of political feasibility, but also on considerations of efficiency in furthering black economic interests. Thus, this dissertation examines the foundation, application, and outcome of Obama’s political strategy as applied to health care reform. On the one hand, his administration managed to enact comprehensive health care reform after almost a hundred years of frustrated attempts. On the other hand, subsequent Republican attacks maimed the reform. Moreover, as the reform was built on the existing system, previous issues of racial stratification resurfaced. The non-extension of Medicaid was particularly detrimental to African-Americans. Yet, despite its imperfections, Obamacare, by creating for the first time a system of universal health care coverage in the US, has contributed to make public opinion more favorable to a single-payer system, in other words, a fully government-run health care system

Full textAlthough the term « film noir » is generally associated with Hollywood cinema, this generic label was originally coined in France in reference to French films made in the 1930s, and the « noir » genre defines a transnational form which circulated between Europe and Hollywood. We intend to study « noir » films in French cinema through this lens, highlighting that the genre is rooted in an old French tradition. Our analysis of the evolution of French film noir foregrounds historical and cultural aspects, positing that film noir articulates a critical discourse on modernity. This doctoral thesis shows that the « noir » form underwent changes which evidenced the ambivalence of identity in a nation in transition between 1946 and 1960, that had to negotiate the cultural shift from Occupation to the Consumer society : the « noir realism » cycle expressed a strong pessimism that has nostalgic, masculinist and nationalist implications, in opposition to the « série noire pour rire » which illustrated a playful reappropriation of History and modernity ; last but not least, gangster films built on the contrast between older characters, marked by the burdens of war, and contemporary mutations, including the development of the American way of life in France. Through its diversity, French film noir reveals the contradictions of post-war French society : the country was keen to dive into the future but obsessed with its traumatic past ; in part seduced by the « American model », it was however determined to keep its « French identity »

Full textThis thesis focuses on the representations of indigenous peoples of the North in Soviet fiction films and made for TV movies. Mobilizing several approaches — film analysis, the cultural history of cinema, the history of representations and Soviet political history — it confronts films with non-film sources (press, paper archives, interviews) in order to highlight the construction of a subjective point of view. It also studies the production of these representations, in both its most concrete and symbolic dimensions. The issue of the participation or non-participation of indigenous peoples in the creation of their image on film, whether in front of or behind the camera, is another central question. The filmic representations of the peoples of the North, constantly torn between visions of “progress” and “authenticity,” operate on the screen as images that allowed the Soviet Union to evaluate its own perception of modernity. From the 1920s to the 1980s, images of indigenous people shifted along a spectrum ranging from the incarnation of backwardness to be eliminated in the name of Sovietization to the embodiment of harmony with nature, now lost or threatened. Moreover, taking into account the question of the contribution of the indigenous people to the creation of their own image, this thesis demonstrates that cinema became a complex space, where different readings and uses were possible according to the position of the participants

Full textThe present thesis is a study of contemporary Brazilian cinema focused on the constitution of female gazes. This study is based on film analysis and aims to describe an aesthetic model in opposition to the dominant (male) gaze that structures the majority of film production. It develops a perspective that distinguishes itself from classical feminist theory, by means of a shift in focus from the historically consecrated pair of opposites (masculine versus feminine) to an emphasis on what films offer as indications pointing to new symbolic structures. Its goal is to shed light on the constitution of a cinematic female gaze, and to describe the structural lines that define it

Full textThis qualitative study seeks to understand the meanings of the body, reproduction and sexuality in the framework of the medicalization process. We also recognize the important role of the latter regarding sexuality, reproduction and body construction and regulation in contemporary societies such as Mexico. We focus on the impact of social structures of exclusions as well as new reproductive technologies (such as contraception, c-sections, ultrasound, etc.) over sexual and reproductive health and rights. We identify how different social inequalities (and their racial, ethnic, gender and social class dimensions) impact sexual and reproductive health and rights. We use an intersectional analysis in order to account for the interaction of different axis of oppression and privilege in the construction of the meanings and experiences of the body, sexuality and reproduction.

Full textThis thesis analyzes the spatialization of politics in post-Civil War United States. As the South returned to the Union, opposition arose between the Midwest and the Northeast on the new economic challenges the country faced. The object of the thesis is thus two-fold: to understand how precisely some political themes became regional-or sectional; and to analyze the impact of sectionalism on Reconstruction. The first part deconstructs the precise workings of sectionalism. This phenomenon was only activated on certain themes, mostly economic: the public debt, paper-money, the tariff. In those cases, sections appeared as powerful ideological categories, undercutting parties in shaping the political landscape. The second part of the thesis offers a new interpretation of Reconstruction incorporating this new perspective. The internaI division of the North on economic issues had a great impact on its ability to reform the South. By pushing the Republican Party to the verge of implosion, sectionalism weakened its policy of Reconstruction to its eventual failure. From those interactions between parties and sections, a new political landscape emerged that dominated the United States until the end of the 19th century

Full textThis research is an attempt to document and analyze the social impacts of the Raglan Mine on the communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq in order to further understand the consequences of such projects on the inuit populations of Nunavik. Nunavik is facing an unprecedented mining boom. Extractive companies are attracted by its considerable mineral resources. Following the promotion of mining development by the Quebec Government, the level of exploration and exploitation is unprecedented North of the 49th parallel. However, the large-scale development of the mining industry is not without consequences for the Inuit people of Nunavik that will be the first to feel the impacts of these mining projects. However, we know little about the social impacts of mining projects taking place in Nunavik. By studying and comparing the social impacts of Raglan on the communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq, this research aims to help bridge these gaps and bring on new light to the impact of mining development in Nunavik. Full textChildren's literature, one of the most widely used aids in a school context, is also considered a child's cultural object. This dissertation focuses specifically on children's books in which the main character is a black child. The Brazilian public schools receive this material from the Department of Education in an aim to promote "education in ethnic-racial relationships" which is present in the school policies that were promulgated in 2003 and 2004, and that made mandatory "the teaching of history and of African-Brazilian and African cultures" in every educational institution as well as "the inclusion of black characters [...] in educational aids" (Brazil, 2005). Numerous Brazilian researchers in the fields of education and sociology have, since the 1950's, studied the representation of this character. Nonetheless, the different subjects to which it is today associated, and the way educators make use of these books inside the classroom, remain yet to be researched. We will therefore, study here, the image of the black child through the analysis of textual and iconographic contents of 80 contemporary children's books, but also the usage that educators of eight public schools of Salvador de Bahia make of these books, while using two complementary approaches: collective interviews and direct observation of a CE2 class. We will focus particularly on the concept of race, which on the one hand, is at the heart of these school policies, of these books and of their usage on children. On the other hand, it constitutes a category of analysis, allowing us to report on social relations. Consequently, this will be the opportunity to bring to light the interests and limitations that these school policies and books entail, as a way to support new educational approaches for the learning of the above mentioned ethnic-racial relationships at school

Full textUnder the general title of “THEORY OF WALKING”, this thesis presents a series of previous and new research around the metamorphoses of cinema. The technical mutation of the cinematographic medium, its dissemination in the social space, have transformed its usage. We continue to call cinema a medium now dissociated from its technological device. Cinema then seems to persist under his digital avatar like a promise, a specter or a double. The series of essays presented in this thesis scrutinize this transformation through the relations between cinema and contemporary art, the becoming-performance of the film, its margins and its borders. Following the genre of counter-factual history, the different essays gathered in the thesis focus on the forgotten figures, the dead ends, the thresholds, the black holes, the ghosts, the meetings without continuation, the anachronisms, that are at work in the recent history of cinema, and may account for its mutations. The thesis comprises an original memoir devoted to Raymond Roussel's relationship with cinema, developed in the light of early cinema studies, archeology of media and remediation process. If the cinema is absent, in the literal sense, from Roussel's work, he is still present by means of allusions to optical devices, to the cinema of attractions, and living cinema. Exploring this labyrinthic questioning, I wonder if cinema has become, because of its transformations and avatars, a “floating signifier”

Full textThis work aims to understand the relationship between a society and its cinema, between the world’s greatest power and the largest film industry. Projection is a common mechanism to the Nation and cinema, it comes to see if an event like September 11 produced a change in American cinema. First, the natural movement of the studios is to erase the towers that appeared in films made before and whose output was expected soon after. Meanwhile, some film makers decide to approach the attacks but by passing them which remain off-screen, and it was not until 2006 that the events of September 11 are embodied on the big screen. Besides, if national unity prevails at first, directors and producers are distancing themselves from Washington’s policy when the idea of a war inIraq is mentioned. When it sees the world in a binary way, Hollywood makes films aboutthe relationship between the US and the Middle East or about the legitimacy of the war.The coming to power of Barack Obama in 2009 generates different changes, including the connection between Hollywood and Washington. Above all, the stigma of September 11 are found in science fiction movies, offering an interpretation of the world not so far from ours. Finally, we see a return to (the projection of) power, as if the death of Bin Laden in 2011 was ending the « American cinema after September 11 »
