Abstract:
Reflections of three sorts on the relations between translators and authors: autobiographical, polemical, and historical. The autobiographical reflections focus on the relation between the author and the German novelist Jeannette Lander and between the author and the German-Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig. The polemical reflections call into question the notion that the translation is of less value than the original, the translator a lesser writer than the author. The historical reflections focus on the history of translating Yiddish into English in America.

Abstract:
The authors present the debate over whether or not industrial relations constitutes a discipline, and then discuss some of the implications of this debate for the development of industrial relations teaching units and curriculum content. Alternative organizational approaches to graduate-level study of industrial relations in Canada and the United States are broadly characterized as « sovereign Discipline » and « dependent field » models. The authors posit that the teaching model used is a direct reflection of whether or not the field of industrial relations is recognized as a sufficiently independent field of inquiry. Finally, the authors consider some of the factors influencing changes in program content and offer some implications of these factors for the future study of industrial relation.

Abstract:
The paper considers the reduction in the composition of subjects of tax legal relations because of amendments to Art. 9 of the RF Tax Code. The authors analyze possible consequences caused by the quantity changes in the composition of members of tax legal relations in the taxes and fees legislation and what impact it had on tax legal relations. The paper considers the participants of tax legal relations and the peculiarities of their status. In particular, the paper examines in more detail such subjects as taxpayers, payers of fees, tax agents, largest taxpayers, and a consolidated group of taxpayers. Using the statistical data, the authors analyze the activity dynamics and the change in the number of certain categories of taxpayers and classify members of tax legal relations. According to the given classification, the authors analyze the legal status of the participants in tax legal relations defined in the Tax Code of the Russian Federation. Individually, such tax relations participant as a private entrepreneur is considered. The authors present the reasons for dynamic changes in the quantity composition of individual entrepreneurs from 2018 to early 2021. The paper assesses the absence in the RF Tax Code of such entities as the RF Ministry of Finance (financial authorities), credit organizations (banks), procedural persons (experts, specialists, witnesses, attesting witnesses), considers their functions and responsibilities. Based on the study results, the authors reasonably conclude that despite their absence in tax legislation as subjects of tax relations, they have not ceased to be actual participants in tax relations. Reasoning from this fact, the authors propose amending the RF Tax Code and including them in the list of subjects of tax legal relations, as well as introducing legal certainty and defining their legal status.

Abstract:
The scale of Flemish municipalities keeps dominating the political agenda in Flanders. In recent years the Flemish government has stimulated the municipalities to merge on a voluntary basis. If they do so, they can receive more competences and strengthen their position. However, this policy has not generated any success so far. In this paper the authors place these efforts in a historical perspective, before addressing the current policy in Flanders concerning scale and decentralisation. In the final part of the paper the authors introduce some foreign experiences with scale and decentralisation. It is remarkable that the current debate in Flanders does not stand on its own. The authors try to determine what lessons Flanders can learn from these foreign experiences.

Abstract:
Company acquisition relation reflects a company's development intent and competitive strategies, which is an important type of enterprise competitive intelligence. In the traditional environment, the acquisition of competitive intelligence mainly relies on newspapers, internal reports, and so on, but the rapid development of the Web introduces a new way to extract company acquisition relation. In this paper, the authors study the problem of extracting company acquisition relation from huge amounts of Web pages, and propose a novel algorithm for company acquisition relation extraction. The authors' algorithm considers the tense feature of Web content and classification technology of semantic strength when extracting company acquisition relation from Web pages. It first determines the tense of each sentence in a Web page, which is then applied in sentences classification so as to evaluate the semantic strength of the candidate sentences in describing company acquisition relation. After that, the authors rank the candidate acquisition relations and return the top-k company acquisition relation. They run experiments on 6144 pages crawled through Google, and measure the performance of their algorithm under different metrics. The experimental results show that the algorithm is effective in determining the tense of sentences as well as the company acquisition relation.

Abstract:
The article attempts to assess the importance of informal networks in achieving internationally recognised academic standards set in four Balkan countries by the reform of higher education institutions and the International Relations (IR) profession in particular. Starting from the core-periphery division of the Global IR, the authors are examining the results of these reforms by focusing on the neoliberalisation of the university and the professional subordination of peripheral IR communities to the Western-dominated epistemic community (including ‘brain drain’ and recruitment of ‘organic’ intellectuals). Based on the interviews conducted with Balkan IR scholars, the authors conclude that informality is viewed as social capital, that is, a means of acquiring benefits by virtue of personal ties with the ‘gatekeepers’ of core IR. In that respect, interviewees suggest three possible solutions for overcoming the epistemic dependence of the Balkan IR community: development of local standards, stimulation of critical approach and better preparation for international standards, while the authors of the article also propose the fourth possibility: abandoning the core-periphery division, and thinking beyond geopolitical and geocultural divisions – the main idea behind the Global IR project.

Abstract In this paper, we prove the sum and product uncertainty relations conjectured by V Dodonov for multiple observables. The uncertainty relations for linear combinations of position and momentum recently obtained by Kechrimparis and Weigert are recovered. Furthermore, the entropic uncertainty relations conjectured by the latter authors are proved for specific cases. At last, we revisit the uncertainty relation for triple canonical operators and obtain a tighter bound on real Hilbert space. A quantitative stability result is given as well.

Abstract:
This essay explores the intersection of public relations education and cultural identity in order to better understand how educators can assist themselves and their students to think more critically and reflexively about ecology, equity, and enterprise at local and global levels. Specifically, the authors argue for the need for educators to ‘reconfigure’ public relations with China in ways that recognize and cultivate multiple perspectives, especially non-US and non-dominant perspectives. The authors describe specific teaching experiences in China to illustrate how the principles of reconfiguration might support productive engagement of social and environmental issues in the public relations classroom.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite significant differences in the why, how and what of their interpretations of religious, our three authors (Muhammad Abu Zahrah, 'Abd-Allah Diraz and Ahmad Shalabi) understand religions, and in Diraz's case the religious phenomenon in general, through categories specific to an Islamic worldview. Their use of Western scientific methods to apprehend the study of religion is not systematic. It varies from Abu Zahrah's limited use to Shalabi's exuberant use, both being highly subservient to polemical intentions. Only Diraz shows familiarity and appreciation for scientific methods, without however subscribing to the epistemology of science which underlies them. The resulting relationship between the scientific study of religion and the Islamic study of religion, as epitomized in the fusion of my own commitments to the former and my authors' commitments to the latter, proves ultimately irreconcilable. Our respective epistemologies remain answerable to different centres of authority; the subjective self in the first instance and the objectified God, Allah, in the second.

Kenny, Amy. "Domestic relations in Shakespeare." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2012. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/42121/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the size, structure and function of the family presented in Shakespeare's plays relates to an early modern understanding of the importance and function of the family. By examining domestic manuals, pamphlets, treatises and diaries from the early modern period, I establish what was considered normative domestic behaviour at the time and analyse Shakespeare's plays through these contemporary attitudes, specifically their treatment of privacy, household structure and medical beliefs surrounding reproduction and gynaecology. This thesis seeks to focus on the way in which people's positions in the family change over time, from infancy to adulthood, and how these relationships are represented in Shakespeare's plays. Beginning with marriage, where the family is first formed; I examine Othello and Macbeth, and show how the marriages in these plays, while tragic, are cherished and valued. Succession was integral to the legacy and sustainability of a family, which is the topic of the next chapter, in which I explore the notions of how children are conceived and raised in Richard III and The Winter's Tale. The transition from childhood into adulthood was fraught with change in both housing and legal circumstances, and this struggle in adolescence is clearly depicted in Romeo and Juliet, which comprises the third chapter. Aside from the familial relationships of husband and wife and parent and child, the most influential relationships were those of siblings, which I investigate in a number of plays in the fourth chapter. Finally, I focus on the traditional and complicated nuclear families in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Hamlet and Coriolanus, and analyse how the family is highlighted and valued in each of these plays. The thesis concludes that throughout Shakespeare's work, the family is privileged over war, nobility and absolute patriarchal control, emphasising that it is vital to understanding and analysing Shakespeare's plays.

Nathanson, Shelby. "Bite Me: Sadomasochistic Gender Relations in Contemporary Vampire Literature." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/1629.

Full text
Abstract:
While the term sadomasochism might conjure cursory images of whips, chains, and leather-clad fetishists, this thesis delves deeper into sadomasochistic theory to analyze dynamics of power and powerlessness represented by a chosen sample of literary relationships. Using two contemporary works of vampire literature—Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series—I examine how power is structured by and between male and female characters (and vampires and humans), and particularly emphasize the patriarchal messages these works' regressive sexual politics engender. Psychoanalysis and feminist theory are employed to support my overarching argument following the gendered dynamics of male sadism and female masochism (and vampire sadism and human masochism), as this dyad reflects men's and women's "normalized" roles of power and powerlessness, respectively, in today's society. Sadomasochistic relationships as depicted in this literature are created through mutual contracts or, what I refer to as, sociocultural sadomasochism to reflect the gendered power imbalances inherent in patriarchy. By concluding with readers' responses to these franchises, this thesis further attempts to determine why such unequal and oppressive relationships are desirable. Since vampires as Gothic figures embody what specific cultures dread yet desire, this literature possesses frightening implications—gender roles are conservative and masculinity is privileged in fiction and, by extension, in twenty-first-century American culture.<br>B.A.<br>Bachelors<br>English<br>Arts and Humanities

Naudin, Hermine. "La relation auteur-éditeur dans le contrat d'édition littéraire." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM1040.

Abstract:
The liberalization of writing in our contemporary cultural society has made it so anyone can now aim for the title of author. The recognition of one’s work is now sought, not through the traditional means of publishing, with the assistance of a professional publisher, but through immaterial processes of self- online publishing. On one hand, thanks to these new means, the author is able to cut the intermediation of the publishing field and to avoid using a professional publishing company. On the other hand, the author, romantic and emblematic character upon whom author’s rights have been forged is fading away from the legal landscape. With the decay of the myth, the ownership conception of author’s rights is taken away by those of the user. The author is fading away. The new customs of our over connected society are dramatically changing law and its ability to adapt. Although, publishing contracts are still a part of the process and are the subject at the heart of this study. The French intellectual property code was able to grant this contract access to the dematerialized world by incorporating the paradigm shift. Main model of publishing contracts, its ambivalent nature is due to the merging of both civil and intellectual property law that can be applied to it. This study aims to capture the true nature of the publishing contract figure, through the relations established between authors and publishers, including their new balance, and also to grasp a full understanding of the mutations surrounding the authors’ rights and that redefine ownership in a now immaterial era through the new alternative means of self-publishing (free licenses and creative commons)

Kenderian, Nanor. "Prison to prison : the prison novels of Hagop Oshagan and Armenian penological literature." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2010. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:2352bc99-62be-4d32-8d44-f0453fb9ea48.

Full text
Abstract:
The prison novels (Haji Murat, Haji Abdullah and Süleyman Effendi) of Western Armenian writer Hagop Oshagan (1883-1948) articulate two unprecedented sociocultural critiques of Armenian experience. Like much of Oshagan's works, these novels, comprising the cycle Haryur Mék Tarvan [101 Years' Imprisonment] (1933), have scarcely been studied. The task of this study is to reveal the nature of Oshagan's critique, and to revise two chief Armenian literary critical trends: that of either de-contextualizing or instrumentalizing these novels' nationalist preoccupations; that is, either overlooking their contextual relevance as responses to contemporaneous nationalist dogmas, or distorting them to seem ideologically sympathetic. Oshagan's novels rather deploy the prison trope to foreground and question the aesthetic and ideological influence of late 19th century Armenian nationalist-revolutionary movements. They moreover undermine the persisting paradigm borne of nationalist-revolutionary rhetoric that collectively represents Armenians and Turks as victims and victimizers respectively. The present study reads Oshagan in the wider context of Armenian penological literature, and locates his engagement with nationalist-revolutionary ideology as an overtly critical, rather than sympathetic project. It provides an unprecedented appraisal of such political movements' primarily negative impact upon late 19th and early 20th century Western Armenian literature, a tradition that has presented 'Armenianness' through an almost exclusive narrative of subjection. This literary historical background allows Oshagan's singularity to appear. He is the first to recognize the prison trope as the preferred nationalist-revolutionary literary convention, a trope he then reconfigures in order to formulate an alternative, a literary mode of nationalism - namely, mystic nationalism - informed by his readings of Dostoevsky's novels. Oshagan imagines and articulates anew the Armenian-Turk relationship in terms that complicate, subvert and transcend the normative master/slave model instituted by nationalist-revolutionary rhetoric. In the process, he elaborates a conception of these movements as inadvertently complicit in the discursive - and, ultimately, also political - (self)-subjection of Armenians culminating as experiences of absolute subjection. After Oshagan, this study constitutes the first comprehensive analysis of literary renderings of both Armenian-Turk relations and nationalist-revolutionary ideology.

Olsson, John Gabriel. "Towards the modelling of forensic authorship methods in the light of aspects of idiolect, text, author and genre relations." Thesis, University of South Wales, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.509113.

Full text
Abstract:
Currently, some prominent forensic linguists rely on notions of the idiolect to undertake forensic authorship comparisons. The first project questions the validity of this doctrine, firstly by examining how authorship and its subsidiary activity of attribution, based on concepts such as style and individual distinctiveness, came into existence. The writings and casework of several forensic linguists are quoted from: it is seen that the notion of distinctiveness has been embraced by these practitioners to the neglect of a balanced observation of variation. A mobile phone corpus was built in order to evaluate the degree of variation in this form of written language. It was found, as expected, that variation is the norm and not the exception - contrary to the claims of some forensic linguists. The second project studies the nature of variability in genre and non genre text, examining factors which can contribute to author or textual variation, including aspects of register and context. An experiment into genre variation is carried out in order to discover the sources and causes of variation. The experiment shows that variation is not author based, but is genre dependent, related mainly to questions of time and tropic factors. The final project outlines an approach to the authorship of mobile phone texts and provides a sample method of authorship comparison based on the notion of range of variation, a concept modified from sociolinguistics. Because all forensic work is carried out within the context of legal requirements and evidence rules these are placed at the heart of the approach and methodology. The research programme reported here demonstrates the importance of a principled, variable-based, selection procedure for test features and the need for an understanding of variation, and it highlights the inadequacy of the notion of the idiolect (as this concept is interpreted by some forensic linguists) for forensic authorship comparison. It underlines the importance of the sociolinguistic observation that style is more usually a property of context and text than it is of the author

AbstractIn this chapter, the authors ask how to broaden the salutogenic paradigm’s scope into an interdisciplinary framework and include other social concepts in its research. As one example of such interdisciplinary research, the authors review some new studies in conflict areas investigating intergroup relations. By relating to such areas of research, they try to address not only the “classic” question – who copes successfully and stays healthy – but also other salutogenic questions such as “who expresses more openness to the other?”

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper is aimed at presenting the Python implementation of the Value-Based Data Envelopment Analysis (VBDEA) method, which was designed to evaluate the efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). This methodological framework explores the links between data envelopment analysis (DEA) and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and proposes a new perspective on the use of the additive DEA model using concepts from the multi-attribute value theory (MAVT). One of the major strengths of VBDEA over typical DEA methodologies is that it offers information on the main reasons behind DMUs’ (in)efficiency. Additionally, this approach allows straightforwardly ranking of efficient and inefficient DMUs, since it relies on a super-efficiency model. Because of the use of value functions, besides allowing the incorporation of the decision-maker (DM)’s preferences, this methodology easily handles negative or null data. In this context, we illustrate the Python implementation of the method by reproducing the main results obtained by (Gouveia et al., Or Spectrum 38:743–767, 2016), when these authors evaluated the performance of 12 health units in a Portuguese region incorporating management preferences given by real DMs.

Abstract:
This research is dedicated to the problem of essence and classification of international private law principles applicable to international private contracts. It studies existing doctrinal opinions towards systematization criteria of international private law principles including that in relation to other branches of law. The authors come to the conclusion on the essence and characteristics of those international private law principles that are applied to contractual relations complicated by a foreign element and that are reflected in the international practice. By subdividing the international private law principles by extent of relation to primary regulation methods (collision law and material law) and taking into account a close tie of this law branch with other branches, in particular, international public and civil law, given the goals of this research, the authors come to the conclusions that regulation of trans-border contractual relations correspond to the following principles: justice, good faith and rationality of participants of legal relations; autonomy of parties’ will; the closest tie. The substantiation of the above gives quotes of international documents widely spread as lex mercatoria – UNIDROIT principles, principles of the European contractual law, and Hauge principles of law selection as applicable to international commercial contracts.

Abstract:
The author demonstrates in this approach that folklore, unlike cult literature, values the essential richness of the imaginary, being closer to the world, which Eminescu said he „ thought in fairy tales and spoke in poetry”. Folklore was must also conceived as literary art, the interference between it and cult literature was the aesthetic program of the German romantics, of the Romanian classics Eminescu, Alecsandri and Anton Pann, of the contemporary authors Brecht and Auden. Folklore works have the same principles of elaboration as cult literature, they being social and documentary documents, which capture essential moments of human relations with society and history. The author refers to the folklorist Sergiu Moraru, who studied especially the poetic system of the sung lyrical song, subjecting it to a structural and typological analysis.

Full text
Abstract:
Depth-sensing nanoindentation, when the displacement the indenter is continuously monitored is widely used for analysis and estimations of mechanical properties of materials. Starting from pioneering papers by Bulychev, Alekhin, Shorshorov and their co-workers, nanoindentation tests are connected with Hertzian contact problems and the frictionless BASh relation is commonly used for evaluation of elastic modulus of materials. We discuss further the connections between Hertz type contact problems and nanoindentation tests and derive fundamental relations for depth-sensing nanoindentation for indenters of various shapes and for various boundary conditions within the contact region. For the loading branch, relations are derived among depth of indentation, size of the contact region, load, hardness, and contact area, using authors’ scaling formulae. The relations are valid for indenters of non-ideal shapes, whose shape function is a monomial function an arbitrary degree d, in particular for blunted pyramidal indenters when 1 &lt; d &lt; 2. We show that some uncertainties in nanoindentation measurements, which are sometimes attributed to properties of the material, can be explained and quantitatively described by properly accounting for geometric deviation of the indenter tip from its nominal geometry. Then relation is derived for the slope of the unloading branch of adhesive (no-slip) indentation. The relation is analogous the frictionless BASh relation and it is independent of the geometry of the indenter. Further, the JKR theory of contact the presence of forces of molecular adhesion is extended to describe contact between a monomial indenter of an arbitrary degree d and an elastic sample. Finally, some exact formulae are obtained for adhesive contact (both the no-slip contact and the contact in the presence of molecular adhesive forces) between indenters and isotropic, linear elastic materials. In particular, it is shown that the BASh formula is still valid for contact between a flat punch and a soft elastic sample in the presence of molecular adhesive forces (the Boussinesq-Kendall problem).

Abstract:
Clad steel possesses benefits of the both component metals in terms of mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, sustainability and lower full lifecycle cost, etc. As a result, it has been more and more widely used in the petroleum, chemical, marine, shipbuilding and metallurgical industries, including stainless-clad steel and titanium clad steel. Such clad steel has also great potential for application in building and bridge structures. For better understanding material properties of such clad steel, a review of research progress available in the literature is conducted herein, as well as recent research undertaken by the authors’ group at Tsinghua University. It can be found that very limited research reported in the literature mainly concerns static material properties of the clad steel, and primary relations between clad ratio and strength are suggested. The authors carried out material tests on both titanium and stainless-clad steel plates, with different clad ratios being incorporated. For the stainless-clad steel tests, both material and butt welded connections are tested, and various elevated temperatures are considered. In addition, tension coupon tests under cyclic loadings are also briefly introduced herein. Primary constitutive relations developed by the authors are reviewed in this paper. All the research findings and proposed formulae may provide an essential basis for future structural analysis, and may promote its application in structural engineering.

Abstract:
The complexity of inter-ethnic relations is caused by various factors, e.g. globalisation processes, the intensification of migration flows, peculiarities of social interactions, and the presence of conflicts in a multi-ethnic environment. In this regard, the aim of our study was to examine the relationship between inter-ethnic attitudes and personal security among respondents of different ethnic backgrounds in different regions of the Russian Federation. Respondents were asked to fill out a questionnaire based on the questionnaire for a comprehensive study of acculturation developed by John Berry, aimed at studying such psychological constructs as the assessment of tolerance/intolerance of ethnic attitudes of the respondent, the assessment of migrant-phobia, the scale of assessment of integral security (physical, cultural, economic), the assessment of orientation towards multicultural ideology, the determination of acculturation expectations/strategies of respondents. The authors have found a statistically significant relationship between such variables as ethnic tolerance, attitudes towards social equality and levels of migrant-phobia; between such variables as economic, physical and cultural security and migrant-phobia. It was found that respondents in the Amur region are mostly oriented towards expectations such as integration and exclusion, while respondents in the Sverdlovsk region are more oriented towards integration and assimilation. The authors believe the study to be important and valuable since the resulting data indicate the presence of different features of inter-ethnic relations in different regions of the Russian Federation, determining the nature of inter- ethnic relations and the level of tension in the region.

Abstract:
The systemic and structural changes taking place in modern Russian legislation reflect those large-scale changes that primarily manifest the internal and external aspects of the state's integration into international integration associations, which significantly expands the scope of legal regulation not only in the economic segment of public relations, but also makes it possible to optimize legislative regulation in certain spheres of economic and economic activity. The purpose of this study is a special area of social relations, which is objectively included in the operating mechanism of management, but does not have its own independent legislative consolidation. We are talking about the so-called «economic legislation», a concept that in Russian jurisprudence is very conditional, since it is still not accepted to single out a separate subject of legal regulation in this sphere of relations in the legal and legislative doctrine. Guided by the set research goals and objectives, the authors attempt to analyze the regulatory framework of the mechanisms of integration interaction. At the same time, the author's vision of this problem is based on special tools and an approach that provide a comprehensive vision of the problem under consideration and is based on the dualism of its perception. Nevertheless, in recent years in the Russian legal science, an opinion has been increasingly expressed about the need for an integrated approach to this problem, which is justified by the objective processes of integrating the Russian economy into the global economic space and, accordingly, the unification of Russian legislation, in particular agrarian legislation, into the global regulatory framework regulatory system.

Gueorguiev, Dimitar, J. Gregory McDaniel, and Pierre DuPont. "Simplified Dispersion Relations for Floquet Waves in a Plate With Multiple Arrays of Attachments." In ASME 1999 Design Engineering Technical Conferences. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc99/vib-8157.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Recently, the authors developed analytical expressions for the dispersions of Floquet waves that propagate in a structure consisting of a plate with multiple arrays of line attachments. The dispersions of these Floquet waves, and in particular the imaginary parts of their wavenumbers, quantify the attenuation of vibrational energy in space as the frequency of a local excitation is varied. Understanding how the parameters of the attached structures, such as their spacings and impedances, affect the Floquet wave dispersions could provide further means to include consideration of energy localization or distribution in the structural design process. Such an understanding is developed in the present work by identifying those cases in which the treatment of certain arrays can be greatly simplified. In particular, limiting cases of small and large array spacings are investigated for which the treatment of particular arrays can be greatly simplified. Such simplifications are not immediately obvious without access to analytical expressions for the Floquet wavenumbers, as the dynamics of all arrays are coupled through the plate. Results presented here will aid the structural design community by indicating which design changes most effectively control energy distribution and by indicating when simplified finite element models of multiple-array structures are possible.

Abstract:
This paper looks at the challenges and shortcomings facing the sunflower sub-sector in Tanzania. It showcases the political economy of sunflower based on analyses of the performance of the sector over a 30-year period since the early 1990s, also studying the relations between the importers of edible oil, and the local actors of the sunflower value chain (farmers and processors). In addition, the authors discuss how disparities in accessing resources for production were established across gender, age, wealth status, which led to social differentiation. Following this, they examine how restrictions introduced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected activities and relations along the sunflower value chain.

Abstract:
Our study’s main object is travel anthropology, the branch of science that studies the history and nature of man, socio-cultural space, social relations, and structures by gathering information during short and long journeys. The publication aims to research the theoretical foundations and genesis of travel anthropology, outline its fundamental principles, and highlight interaction with related sciences. The article’s defining objectives are the analysis of the synthesis of fundamental research approaches in travel anthropology and their implementation in journalism. When we analyze what methods are used by modern authors, also called «cultural observers», we can return to the localization strategy, namely the centering of the culture around a particular place, village, or another spatial object. It is about the participants-observers and how the workplace is limited in space and time and the broader concept of fieldwork. Some disciplinary practices are confused with today’s complex, interactive cultural conjunctures, leading us to think of a laboratory of controlled observations. Indeed, disciplinary approaches have changed since Malinowski’s time. Based on the experience of fieldwork of Svitlana Aleksievich, Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, or Malgorzata Reimer, we can conclude that in modern journalism, where the tools of travel anthropology are used, the practical methods of complexity, reflexivity, principles of openness, and semiotics are decisive. Their authors implement both for stable localization and for a prevailing transition.

Oosterhoff, Pauline, and Raudah M. Yunus. The Effects of Social Assistance Interventions on Gender, Familial and Household Relations Among Refugees and Displaced Populations: A Review of the Literature on Interventions in Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/basic.2022.011.

Full text
Abstract:
This literature review aims to explore the evidence on the effects of social assistance on gender, familial, and household relations and power dynamics among refugees and (internally) displaced populations in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. It examines the findings from an intersectional gender perspective allowing the authors to build on the knowledge of ‘what works’ in interventions in general and hopefully improve gender equality and social inclusion. Out of 1,564 papers initially identified and screened, 22 were included in the final stage. A question that emerged as the papers were analysed was whether the arduous work of targeting individuals was efficient or necessary, given that the available evidence suggests that beneficiaries generally tend to share their stipend with other family members for the collective good. Most studies tended to conflate gender with women and girls – making distinctions between widowed, married, unmarried and divorced women – but ignoring other dimensions such as class, health status, religion, ethnicity, education, prior work experience, political affiliation, and civil participation. Many programmes and research fail to disaggregate data. Social assistance programmes focus on individuals and households, with little attention to the wider context and overall conflict. Most studies paid negligible attention to familial infrastructures and strategies for sustainable interventions. Access to, and use of, cash transfers are part of broader familial strategies to mobilise or increase resources including, for example, (male) migration in pursuit of remittances, or (female) dependency on ‘community charity’. Short-term cash transfers can, in some circumstances, disrupt individuals’ and families’ access to more sustainable income or ‘charity’. Thus, important questions are raised about the purpose of social assistance: does it aim to preserve or transform families through targeting?

Lewis, Dustin, Naz Modirzadeh, and Jessics Burniske. The Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate and International Humanitarian Law: Preliminary Considerations for States. Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.54813/qiaf4598.

Full text
Abstract:
In developing international humanitarian law (IHL), States have aimed in part to lay down the primary normative and operational framework pertaining to principled humanitarian action in situations of armed conflict. The possibility that certain counterterrorism measures may be instituted in a manner that intentionally or unintentionally impedes such action has been recognized by an increasingly wide array of States and entities, including the United Nations Security Council and the U.N. Secretary-General. At least two aspects of the contemporary international discourse on intersections between principled humanitarian action and counterterrorism measures warrant more sustained attention. The first concerns who is, and who ought to be, in a position to authentically and authoritatively interpret and apply IHL in this area. The second concerns the relationships between IHL and other possibly relevant regulatory frameworks, including counterterrorism mandates flowing from decisions of the U.N. Security Council. Partly in relation to those two axes of the broader international discourse, a debate has emerged regarding whether the U.N. Security Council may authorize one particular counterterrorism entity — namely, the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) — to interpret and assess compliance with IHL pertaining to humanitarian action in relation to certain counterterrorism contexts. In a new legal briefing for the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (HLS PILAC), Dustin A. Lewis, Naz K. Modirzadeh, and Jessica S. Burniske seek to help inform that debate by raising some preliminary considerations regarding that possibility. The authors focus on the possible implications of States and other relevant actors pursuing various responses or not responding to this debate. One of the authors’ goals is to help raise awareness of this area with a focus on perspectives drawn from international law. Another is to invite a broader engagement with the question of the preservation of the humanitarian commitments laid down in IHL in a period marked by a growing number — and a deepening — of the intersections between situations of armed conflict and measures to suppress terrorism.

Abstract:
Back to search Research programme: Research projects Project status: Completed Authors: Ipsos Date published: 2022-06-07 DOI: https://doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.pev512 There has been a steady increase in the use of community food providers over the last decade, and this has been exacerbated by the pandemic. The FSA’s Consumer Insights Tracker found that 15% of people (aged 16+) said they had used a food bank or food charity at least once in March 2022. This report explores the journey that food takes from suppliers to end consumers in the community food provision sector in the UK. The overall aim is to understand what support community providers might need in relation to food safety. This research was conducted as a small-scale exploratory piece of work aiming to address the following overarching objectives: How can we ensure that food from community providers is as safe as it should be? How can the FSA best support community providers to comply with food safety guidance?
