Abstract:
This essay considers reactions to the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, in particular the ways in which the founders of English Methodism, John and Charles Wesley used the event in their sermons and hymns respectively. The Wesleys focused on the vengeful power of the divine in order to urge people to look into their hearts and change their ways to avoid damnation. In contrast, the reaction to the global natural disasters of 2005 has been quite different. The Archbishop of Canterbury's essay that emphasises the privacy of faith that exists because it is engaged in a struggle against doubt is compared

Abstract:
An overview of the prose writings of John Wesley, and the hymn writing of his brother Charles, shows that John Milton was an important influence on both men. A search of the literature indicates that critics have rarely noticed this, and although some work has been done on John's abridgement of Paradise Lost, there are no qualitative studies of its effect on the hymnody of Charles. Although the singing of hymns is a potential way of influencing language and doctrine of all singers, it is particularly important for people who have little other education. Sanctification is a central theme in the theology of John and Charles Wesley. Whilst John’s theology of sanctification has received much scholarly attention, much less research has been conducted in relation to Charles. This thesis contributes to redressing the balance, drawing particularly on the evidence of the extensive and theologically rich corpus of Charles’ poetic texts to do so. In this analysis of Charles’ theology of sanctification, the centrality Charles accorded to resignation is uncovered. Resignation is a positive attribute for Charles involving an act of intention, desire and of

Abstract:
Abstract With its rapid growth, Methodism’s relations with the Anglican religious establishment became increasingly strained. In Charles’s mind, Methodists were simply another religious society within the Church of England, but several of the societies in which the Wesleys participated (Shaw’s and Fetter Lane) were drifting away from Anglicanism-if not becoming openly hostile to it. The Wesleys’ association with the societies hurt their standing in the eyes of their fellow churchmen, as did their emphasis upon religious experience and “vehement” preaching of “justification by faith only.’’ The

Abstract Charles Wesley’s conversion began in him a tidal wave of spiritual energy and action. Two days after his personal Pentecost, Charles began spreading the good news about salvation by faith. In the afterglow of his own experience he spoke to a few friends, and ministered in intercessory prayer, serving most directly through spiritual conversation. As his health returned he stepped into his ministerial vocation with renewed strength and vigor. His journal for the days following the conversion finds him writing sermons, officiating at vespers, and speaking to others about spiritual format

The release of a greater amount of natural organic matter (NOM) within climate change is registered in many catchments with peatbog areas. The aim of our research is to study the dynamics of releasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into surface water in headwater areas with peatbogs. DOC concentrations are analysed in relation to extreme rainfall-runoff (R-R) events and according to the hydrological preconditions of the basin. These preconditions are described using selected hydroclimatic variables (14 days before the R-R event). The source data comes from stations of the Faculty of Science, C

Vicksburg National Military Park (VICK) was established for its historical significance as a one of the principle military sieges resulting in a turning point during the American Civil War. The steep terrain around the city of Vicksburg was integral in the military siege, providing high vantage points and a substrate that was easy to entrench for the armies, but unknown to many is the fossil content, particularly a diversity of fossil mollusks. These fossils at VICK are important paleontological resources which have yet to receive focused attention from park staff, visitors, and researchers. T
