Abstract:
Research suggests a negative relationship between frequent use of communication technologies, such as text messaging and social network sites, and academic performance, but the nature of the relationship needs to be explored in greater detail. This study explored the relationship between use of communication technologies and self-reported study skills. A total of 74 first-year university students completed the online Learning and Study Strategies Inventory and reported on how frequently they used text messaging, instant messaging, and online social networks such as Facebook. Correlation analysis indicated a negative relationship between frequency of communications technology use and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory measure of Concentration. While the study does not prove a causal relationship, it provides more detail on the specific study skills challenges students may be facing when they interrupt their studying with frequent online social communication. This increased understanding can help educators tailor study skills interventions and support more directly to students’ needs.

Abstract:
Abstract Human being's existence is closely related to communication, how the individual interacts and interacts with others. By communicating, an individual conveys information and interests, attitudes, values, beliefs and feelings, sharing them with others, thus creating a contexture of relationships. Communication means not only speaking, writing, but also silencing, listening or acting. Both the patient and the physiotherapist communicate verbally, non-verbal and paraverbal to respond to and understand the behavior of the communication partner. In addition to professional skills, acquiring communication skills by physiotherapist can lead to patient adherence and satisfaction to the therapeutic program. Aim: In this paper, we aim to highlight the important aspects of the verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal skills of the physical therapist to promote communication with the patient in the therapeutic relationship. Methods: Literature review was the method of this study and were considered eligible only articles with statistically significant data. Results: Verbal communication essentially validates the message transmitted, non-verbal skills confirm and at the same time strongly influence communication partners. By form, paraverbal and non-verbal communication are concurrent with the verbal, respectively confirming it, but by content and interpretation, they can give other meanings to the relationship.

Abstract:
Communication competence is considered essential to managing, both in terms of its theoretical role in management and in observations of the communication behaviors of managers. Yet the specific skills and abilities or communication competencies of managers have received only limited study in organizational settings. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between managerial performance and communication competency by identifying communication skills and social cognitive abilities that are associated with managerial performance for both male andfemale managers. Female managers provided lower self-reports of skills than male managers, and results linked managerial performance primarily to communication skills.

Abstract:
It can be stated that the relationships that parents have with their children in the preschool period have a great impact on their future social-emotional lives and a significant part of learning takes place in the preschool period. Considering those parents' attitudes during child-rearing may affect the child's development and interpersonal relationships; this study aims to examine the relationship between parental attitudes and communication skills of 36-72 monthold children attending preschool education institutions. This research: parents' attitudes concerning reveal the relationship between preschool children's communication skills, preschool in Turkey period in terms of the lack of a sufficient number of working children about the communication skills, parents and educators; it is thought to be important in terms of providing a different perspective and contributing to the development of children's communication skills and drawing their attention to this issue, and also in terms of guiding researchers in future studies on the subject. The research was conducted using the relational scanning model. The population of this research consists of 36-72 months old children attending pre-school education institutions in Elazığ city center and Diyarbakır central districts in the 2017-2018 academic year, and parents of 36-72 months old children. The sample of the study consisted of 300 children and 320 parents randomly selected from the universe. In the research, the "Parental Attitudes Questionnaire" and "Communication Skills Scale" were used. The Parental Attitudes Determination Questionnaire consists of four parental attitudes (oppressive-authoritarian, protective, indifferent-carefree, democratic). The Communication Skills Scale consists of four communication skills (verbal communication, avoiding communication barriers, and communication with courtesy content, non-verbal communication). The data obtained were analyzed with SPSS 22 program. In the statistical evaluation, firstly, a normality test was applied to the subscales of the "Parental Attitudes Determination Questionnaire" and the "Communication Skills Scale". Since “p <0.05” in all communication skills subscales and all parental attitudes subscales, it was accepted that they did not show a normal distribution. Thus, Spearman Correlation was applied to test whether there was a significant relationship between parent attitudes and communication skills. According to the results of the research it is observed that parents adopt "Democratic Attitude" the most and "Verbal Communication Skills" are used the most by preschool children. No significant relationship was found between oppressiveauthoritarian, indifferent-carefree, and democratic parental attitudes and subscales of communication skills. Only a low level of negative correlation was found between the protective parental style and the verbal communication skills subscale. According to the results of the study, parents and educators can be trained on parent attitudes and communication skills. Educators can support the development of children with low communication skills with activities that will showcase their social skills and allow them to express themselves. To parents who show a protective attitude; children can be helped to behave in a way that supports their verbal communication skills, affects the personality development of the child positively, and allows them to develop a personality structure independent of others. This research was conducted in Elâzığ and Diyarbakır provinces. Turkey will be held in the west of the province or be provided with a contribution to the results of the research will be done with a much larger sample group. The relationship between the communication skills of preschool children and an area different from the parent attitudes can be examined.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Communicating with patients has long been identified as an important physician competency. More recently, there is a growing consensus regarding the components that define physician-patient communication. There continues to be emphasis on both the need to teach and to assess the communication skills of physicians. Objective This narrative review aims to summarize the work that has been conducted in physician-patient communication that supports the efficacy of good communications skills. This work may also help to define the physician-patient communication skills that need to be taught and assessed. Results A review of the literature shows it contains impressive evidence supporting positive associations between physician communication behaviors and positive patient outcomes, such as patient recall, patient understanding, and patient adherence to therapy. There is a consensus about what constitutes “best practice” for physician communication in medical encounters: (1) fostering the relationship, (2) gathering information, (3) providing information, (4) making decisions, (5) responding to emotions, and (6) enabling disease- and treatment-related behavior. Conclusions Evidence supports the importance of communication skills as a dimension of physician competence. Effort to enhance teaching of communication skills to medical trainees likely will require significant changes in instruction at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as changes in assessing the developing communication skills of physicians. An added critical dimension is faculty understanding of the importance of communication skills, and their commitment to helping trainees develop those skills.

Abstract:
Objective: Communicating with patients is not only among the principles of care, but it is considered as one of the key roles of nurses. As nurses are skilled in other clinical skills, their communication skills should also be adequate. The aim of this study is to determine nurses’ communication skills.Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in 2015 in hospitals affiliated to Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. 215 nurses participated in the study using census method. Data was collected using valid and reliable communication skills (α=0.885). The quality of communication skills was classified on three levels: poor, average, and good. Results: Quality of communication skills of 120 (55.8%) of nurses was weak, 95 (44.2%) moderate, and there was no good evaluation (0%). The communication skills of most nurses were weak in the areas of conscious start (75.8%), verbal and nonverbal communication skills (86.5%), inner and outer harmony (92.6%), respect for the patient (94.4%) and the unconditional acceptance of patient (100%). There was a significant relationship between the nurses’ educational level, mean age and work experience with quality of communication skills (p <0.05).Conclusion: The results indicate the low ability of nurses in terms of communication skills with the patient. It seems that teaching communication skills, as well as the revision of management, description of job responsibilities, increasing job autonomy and decision-making power for nurses can be the effective ways to improve nurse-patient communication which leads to enhancing the quality of care from patients.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(2) 2018 p.275-281

Abstract:
Abstract Background Relationship Centered Communication (RCC) acknowledges the physician’s expertise as well as the patient’s perspective.1 Clinician empathy also serves to improve patients’ ability to cope with chronic diseases.2 Furthermore, effective communication aids with diagnosis and improves treatment adherence.3 Hence, the need to teach and assess competence in Interpersonal Communication - Communicates effectively with patients, caregivers and interprofessional teams milestones. Created in conjunction with the Academy of Communication in Healthcare, RCC training for faculty is encouraged by our organization. Having attended the inter-professional workshop, ID faculty collaborated with the training program to afford the fellows the same opportunity to learn RCC skills. Methods Faculty have reported limited opportunities to observe/assess their learners. Trainees report infrequent and nonspecific feedback regarding areas for improvement.4 Given these challenges, the ID fellows began a multi-step plan to hone new communication skills after attending the RCC workshop. Activities included both real and simulated encounters as well as didactic presentations. Each scenario built upon the previous one providing continuity of care. Upon completing both outpatient and inpatient encounters, the fellow joined the debriefing team (standardized patient, Program Director and RCC coach) to discuss areas of competence as well as opportunities for improvement. The fellows were also evaluated by faculty in actual patient encounters in addition to choosing a RCC skill to highlight during didactic conference. Results Activities provided fellows RCC teaching opportunities, interaction with a standardized patient and learn how the interaction was perceived from the patient’s perspective. Ability to practice in a safe simulation environment, access to coaching and real-time assessment was reported as valuable for all parties. The RCC training afforded both parties the ability to give and receive specific/objective feedback for a competency usually perceived as subjective. Conclusion Varied activities urged the fellows to establish consistent communications habits. The program generated a framework for sustainability of skills and objective assessment. Abstract:
It was mentioned that the ability to establish a positive relationship between the members of international crews is an urgent issue. This ability influences not only the safety of navigation, but the mental health of seafarers as well. Foreign language competence is essential for the resolution of this problem. Successful everyday communication of seafarers depends on a number of factors: the awareness of cross-cultural, religious and cross-generational differences will help establish a friendly communication onboard a ship with an international crew. This paper presents a study on cross-generational communication of future seafarers. Our study empirically proved that the ability of mutual communication between different age groups facilitates the establishment of friendly relationships onboard a ship. A psychological insight into the peculiarities of different generations helped us see the process of communication of seafarers in a new light. We outlined the main values of different generations, allowing the students to learn the preferred topics of everyday communication. In our opinion, the results of this study may be used by lecturers of maritime educational establishments in the scope of the course Psychology and English language.

Abstract:
The manager-employee communication is the basis of an effective management. Communication is sort of an executive skill. In this research, the aim is to determine how this skill affects the levels of job satisfaction and job commitment and whether there is a relationship between these concepts. The research was conducted by means of relational screening model and survey method was used in order to collect data. "Managerial communication skills scale" developed by Tanrıverdi and colleagues (2010) for health administrators was used in evaluating managerial communication skills. In the evaluation of job satisfaction of the employees was used 5 items that measure job satisfaction developed by Brown and Peterson (1994). The sample of the study consisted of 399 people, of which 180 were female (45.1%) and 219 were male (54.9%), determined by random sampling method. The obtained data were analyzed by frequency analysis, T-test, cross table, simple and multiple regression models using SPSS 20.0 package program. Analyses have shown that there is a positive, bi-directional and moderate relationship between managerial communication skills and job satisfaction and job commitment levels; positive, bi-directional but weak relationship between job satisfaction and job commitment. According to the regression model developed according to research hypotheses, it is understood that managerial communication skills are effective in the level of job satisfaction and job commitment of employees. Analyses confirm all of the hypotheses. It has been proposed to increase the frequency and level of training given for the development of communication skills of managers.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between leaders’ interpersonal communication skills and nurses’ innovative behaviour. Moreover, innovative behaviour is essential for nurses in today’s dynamic healthcare systems whereby, the interpersonal communication skill has become an increasingly important factor in enhancing innovative behaviour. This study is based on the conceptual framework of interpersonal communication skills, innovative behaviour, and perceived trustworthiness. Using stratified sampling technique, questionnaires were distributed to 246 nurses’ grade U29 in three public state hospitals in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. Since this is a correlational study, a quantitative research method is employed to determine the existing relationship between the variables. Findings indicated that the head nurses implemented moderately all the five components of interpersonal communication skills. The existence of perceived trustworthiness was found to improve the interaction between both parties to transform nurses to generate innovation in their work. The study concluded that interpersonal communication skills are required to be implemented by leaders in enhancing nurses’ innovative behaviour.

Abstract:
This study examined the process of organizational assimilation and how it was affected by social skills, within the context of a midwestern correctional facility. Participants were inmates housed in a maximum-, medium-, or minimum-security prison. A survey was distributed that measured frequency of inmates' external communication, sources of internal communication, prisonization, powerlessness, and social skills. Results supported links between prisonization and amount of internal and external communication and powerlessness. However, inmates' prisonization was not related to their social skills. Results indicated that inmates' assimilation into prison culture is influenced by intra- and extraprison variables.

Objective: The purpose of this study was assessment of the human communication indexes between employees branches of Social Security Organization (SSO) of Tehran. Method: The method used in this study, the survey method is most common in quantitative research. The sample size was calculated based on Morgan 271 were randomly selected based on these numbers. This study was conducted to collect data and information from the questionnaire were used. Questionnaire consisted of 32 questions of human relations which 5 first question demographic questionnaire and subjects such as sex, education, work experience, marital status and age were included in the study, as well as other questions samples to determine the basis of human relations based on the five choice Likert scale (always, often, sometimes, rarely, never) was designed. In this project, SPSS software was used to analysis the data. Findings: The results showed that the level of communication skills of staff from the employees' point of view is evaluated desirable (p<0.05). The study results showed that the central staff organization perspective on human communication of employees in these organizations varies according to gender and gender workers on the significant relationship of the staff human relations index. 40% of male participants and 27% of female participants evaluated communication skills, desirable. So men, more than women have a positive opinion about the staff of Organization human communication index. staff's view about the organization of the employees in the organization of human relationships education are different (p<0.05) in terms of their scores significantly negatively correlated Affairs staff to staff communication skills. A negative correlation means that higher level, the weaker the staff of Human Relations have evaluated. staff perspective on human communication parameters of the staff in terms of work experience is different (p>0.05). Thus, no significant correlation between duration of working on their score is an index of human communications staff. Staff's view about the employees in the organization about human relationships in terms of a significant relationship between marital statuses (p>0.05) of employees and their score to human communications index of staff. However, 35% of married people and 19% of single people evaluated communication skills of personnel, appropriate. Thus, there is no significant correlation between duration of working and their score to staff index of human communications (p>0.05). Positive correlation means that with increasing age, a higher score on the index of human communications staff are employees and age, people are more important than communication skills. Positive correlation means that with increasing age, employees have higher scores on the index of human communications and aging causes people to care more about communication skills.

Narrative medicine is a well established academic field and has been shown to increase clinical skill and improve the therapeutic relationship of those who study its principles (Banks et al, 1995; Jones, 1999). Literary analysis is a convenient means of fostering advanced communication skills. Moreover, the skills gained from such an education are highly applicable to everyday psychiatric practice. The evidence for the efficacy of narrative medicine is well established, and on this basis a strong argument can be made for its inclusion as a compulsory part of the current MRCPsych course.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires residency programs to teach 6 core competencies and to provide evidence of effective standardized training through objective measures. George Washington University's Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine implemented a pilot program to address the interpersonal and communication skill competency. In this program, we aimed to pilot the Relationship Express model, a series of exercises in experiential learning to teach anesthesiology residents to build effective relationships with patients in time-limited circumstances. The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of this model for anesthesiology training. Methods A total of 7 first-year clinical anesthesiology residents participated in this pilot study, and 4 residents completed the entire program for analysis purposes. Relationship Express was presented in three 1.5-hour sessions: (1) introduction followed by 2-case, standardized patient pretest with feedback to residents from faculty observers; (2) interpersonal and communication skills didactic workshop with video behavior modeling; and (3) review discussion followed by 2-case, standardized patient posttest and evaluation. Results Modified Brookfield comments revealed the following themes: (1) time constraints were realistic compared with clinical practice; (2) admitting errors with patients was difficult; (3) patients were more aware of body language than anticipated; (4) residents liked the group discussions and the video interview; (5) standardized patients were convincing; and (6) residents found the feedback from faculty and standardized patients helpful. Conclusions Resident retrospective self-assessment and learning comments confirm the potential value of the Relationship Express model. This program will require further assessment and refinement with a larger number of residents.

Abstract:
Purpose Clinical care in all aspects of audiology and speech-language pathology requires a significant and diverse skill set in order to screen, assess, diagnose, treat, and monitor performance of their patients. Communication skills are paramount in all directions of their relationship with patients and coworkers. Additionally, clinicians rarely work in isolation and are most often in a group environment and setting with other peer professionals, as well as affiliated professionals with differing yet complementary multifaceted skills associated with neighboring professions. Conclusions The aggregate of skills spans an enormous set. Expectations are high, and much is expected as a clinician and a colleague! While clinical skill and performance are certainly what most hiring managers look for, this clinical focus article will discuss the critical importance of aspects of relationship courtesy and trust. Indeed, these characteristics will be presented as even more critical than clinical skills alone. Four sets of skills will be presented, which the author claims mandatory for all clinical providers. They include knowledge and competence , efficiency and productivity , relationships with patients , and relationships with peers.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveRecently, rehabilitation therapists have become involved in cancer rehabilitation; however, no communication skills training that increases the ability to provide emotional support for cancer patients has been developed for rehabilitation therapists. In addition, no study has examined associations between rehabilitation therapists’ communication skills and their level of autistic-like traits (ALT), which are in-born characteristics including specific communication styles and difficulty communicating with patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether confidence in communicating with patients mitigates communication difficulties experienced by rehabilitation therapists who have high levels of ALT.MethodRehabilitation therapists who treat patients with cancer completed self-administered postal questionnaires anonymously. Scores were obtained on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient short form, confidence in communication, and communication difficulties. We used covariance structure analyses to test hypothetical models, and confirmed that confidence in communication mediates the relationship between ALT and perceived communication difficulties.ResultsParticipants included 1,343 respondents (49.6%). Autism-Spectrum Quotient scores were positively correlated with communication difficulties (r = 0.16, p < 0.001). The correlation was mitigated by confidence in communication in the fit model. However, higher confidence in creating a supportive atmosphere was associated with more difficulty in communication (r = 0.16, p < 0.001).Significance of resultsCommunication difficulty was linked to rehabilitation therapists’ ALTs. By increasing confidence in areas of communication other than creation of a supportive atmosphere, ALT-related difficulties in communication may be ameliorated. Confidence to create supportive environments correlated positively with difficulty. Communication skills training to increase confidence in communication for rehabilitation therapists should be developed with vigilance regarding ALT levels.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore the ways in which Thai-German couples perceive their mutual verbal and nonverbal communication as causing them dissatisfaction in their daily lives. Furthermore, it investigates the extent to which the partners’ mutual communication satisfaction is correlated to the general satisfaction with their relationship. A mixed-methods approach was used for data collection. The data were collected from 544 questionnaire respondents and 11 interviewees. Data analysis employed statistical analyses for quantitative data (2 sets of questionnaires), and text analysis for the individual indepth interview. The survey results indicated a strong positive correlation between communication satisfaction and relationship satisfaction: r (531) = +.62, p < .001, while the interviews narrowed down the specific communicational problems for the Thai-German couples. These included linguistic skills, accent, pronunciation, grammar, different styles of communicating (direct vs. indirect communication), and differences in emotional expressiveness. Meaningful contrasts were found in the use of humor, eye contact, smiling, intimate touch and personal space. Patterns of conflict management were described, as well as the phenomena of double cultural identity and third language building, which were present in successful relationships.

Abstract:
In the 21st century, use of online communication has skyrocketed, and this is particularly true for young people who have grown up in the age of the smartphone. In the world of online communication, adolescents and young adults especially seem to gravitate toward social media. The present study examined a mediational model wherein social media use in emerging adults predicts social media addiction through altered social behaviors, including face-to-face interactions, communication apprehension, and social skill deficits. More than 100 undergraduate students reported on their social media use and social behaviors via an online questionnaire. Contrary to expectations, social media use was only significantly correlated with social skills deficits, r(108) = .204, p = .017, and social media addiction, r(108) = .495, p < .001. Face-to-face interactions, communication apprehension, and social skills deficits did not function as mediators of the relationship between social media use and addiction and had no significant correlations with social media addiction. A modified mediation model is proposed, wherein impoverished face-to-face behavior and communication apprehension predict social skills deficits and those deficits predict social media addiction only when social media use is high.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: Child development is a significant issue in global public health, and maternal mental health (MMH) can have a remarkable effect on children’s development of communication skills. We aimed to investigate the association between MMH and communication skills in a sample of Iranian children.METHODS: This study was conducted in Shiraz, Iran during 2016. In total, 640 mothers who lived in Shiraz and were registered in the Fars Birth Cohort (FBC) study were invited to attend the FBC clinic with their children. A trained physician evaluated MMH using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Additionally, a trained nurse assessed the children’s communication development status using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for 60-month old children.RESULTS: The majority of the mothers were homemakers (82.8%) and had high school diplomas (38.9%). The mothers’ mean age was 33.7±4.6 years. Seventy-nine (12.3%) children had delayed communication skills, but no significant association was found between children’s communication skills and the mothers’ total GHQ score (p=0.43). In total, 493 mothers (77.0%) had abnormal somatic symptoms, 497 (77.7%) had abnormal anxiety/insomnia, 337 (52.7%) had social dysfunction, and 232 (36.3%) suffered from depression. Logistic regression indicated that after adjusting for confounders, the odds of delayed communication skills were 3-fold higher among the children of mothers with abnormal somatic symptoms than among other children (p=0.01).CONCLUSIONS: The study results confirmed that MMH had a significant impact on children’s communication skills. Moreover, maternal abnormal somatic symptoms exerted the strongest impact on the development of communication skills in 5-yearold children.

The teaching and learning of English as a second language involve many different skills. This study investigates the relationship between Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) trainee practitioners’ (TPs) personality traits and their verbal communication skills. The personality traits investigated are the Big Five, while the verbal communication skills investigated include interpersonal skills, verbal-linguistic skills, motivation, altruism, and self-regulation. This study involved 277 TESL TPs from four different teacher training institutes in Malaysia. This quantitative study used questionnaires to investigate both the variables. The findings show that out of the Big Five personality traits, only openness showed positive relationship to verbal communication. This trait deserves greater attention if students are to maximise the use of effective communication skills. This study profiles personality traits to examine the relationship of each trait in relation to communication skills. The findings of this study would be significant for the Higher Education Ministry of Malaysia and education regulators, apart from the teaching community.

Abstract:
Background: The ability of communicating with people is of great importance for physicians. Predicting unknown variables like personality traits is one of the important impressive issues in choosing future medical experts in medical training. Regarding this, medical colleges have training programs all around the world. The present study aimed to investigate the attitude toward learning communication skills based on the personality traits of medical students. Materials and Methods: This correlational study was done in 2019 and the participants were medical students who were selected using a convenience sampling method. Zuckerman-Kuhlman personality questionnaire and communication skills attitude scale (CSAS) were used for data collection. CSAS was used to assess positive and negative attitudes. Results: The results showed that only the sociability dimension among the five dimensions of personality had a significant relationship with attitude toward learning communication skills (P=0.018). Moreover, significant relationships of gender (P=0.022), mother’s education level (P=0.049), and residence (P=0.036) with attitude to learning communication skills were found. Conclusion: According to the results, the dimension of demographic characteristics is effective in improving communication skills of medical students. Therefore, it is recommended that it should be considered in medical curriculum development and revision and modifications.

Abstract Introduction: In nursing, the communication between the nurse and the child is the core of child care. Some barriers can affect the nurse-patient relationship to have proper communication skills for child care. Objective: This study aimed to examine the correlation between communication skills and early maladaptive schemas in nurses working in pediatric wards. Materials and Methods: This is an analytical and correlational study. The participants were 178 nurses working in a children’s hospital in Rasht City, Iran in 2016. The data collection tool was a three-part questionnaire: A demographic form, the interpersonal communication skills scale (ASMA), and the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Friedman and Spearman tests. Results: The majority of nurses were younger than 30 years (80.8%), had a bachelor’s degree in nursing (89.0%), were married (65.1%), had children (54.8%), were living in urban areas (95.2%), had employment status (63.3%) and less than 15 years of work experience (46.5%). The highest mean scores of ASMA (44.12±0.53) and YSQ-SF tools (2.65±1.04) were related to general communication skills and then disconnection and rejection, respectively. The results of the Spearman correlation test showed that the overall ASMA score had significant negative correlations with early maladaptive schemas of impaired autonomy and performance (r= -0.283), impaired limits (r= -0.421), other-directedness (r= -0.303), and disconnection and rejection (r= -0.302) (P=0.0001). Conclusion: Nurses who have a higher level of early maladaptive schemas showed poorer communication skills. Examining maladaptive schemas in nurses may provide appropriate strategies to improve their communication skills.

Abstract:
Motor skill deficits are present and persist in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; Staples & Reid, 2010). Yet the focus of intervention is on core impairments, which are part of the diagnostic criteria for ASD, deficits in social communication skills. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the functional motor skills, of 6- to 15-year-old children with high-functioning ASD, predict success in standardized social communicative skills. It is hypothesized that children with better motor skills will have better social communicative skills. A total of 35 children with ASD between the ages of 6–15 years participated in this study. The univariate GLM (general linear model) tested the relationship of motor skills on social communicative skills holding constant age, IQ, ethnicity, gender, and clinical ASD diagnosis. Object-control motor skills significantly predicted calibrated ASD severity (p < .05). Children with weaker motor skills have greater social communicative skill deficits. How this relationship exists behaviorally, needs to be explored further.
