O presente relatório foi elaborado no âmbito da Prática de Ensino Supervisionada em Jardim-de-Infância e 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, inserida no Mestrado em Educação Pré-Escolar e Ensino do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico. O objetivo geral foi promover o livro e a leitura, procurando contribuir para a formação de leitores com hábitos de leitura frequentes. O tema surgiu pela necessidade de compreender qual o papel do educador/professor na promoção da leitura, tendo em conta que este deve orientar o seu trabalho no sentido de transformar a escola numa comunidade de leitura, na qual o prazer de ler é uma conquista fundamental. Também foi nosso propósito incidir no papel da família, tendo em conta a promoção do livro e da leitura. A Dimensão Investigativa da PES baseou-se na observação participante; nos registos fotográficos; no caderno de formação e na aplicação de dois inquéritos por questionário, um à educadora e professora cooperantes e outro a uma amostra de seis crianças do grupo de pré-escolar, que ingressavam no ano letivo seguinte no 1º ano do 1º CEB. Os resultados mostram que em ambos os contextos, jardim-de-infância e 1º ciclo do ensino básico, existem poucos momentos de leitura de histórias, como também a utilização frequente da área da biblioteca da sala. Através da análise dos inquéritos por questionário às profissionais de educação, verifica-se que ambas mencionam que existe a rotina frequente de leitura de histórias, salientando-se que esses momentos não foram observados durante a minha observação e intervenção. Com a análise dos inquéritos por questionário ao grupo de crianças do pré-escolar, estes consideram o momento de leitura de histórias promovido pela educadora, satisfatório; Abstract: The present report has been prepared in scope of Practice of Supervised Teaching in kindergarten and 1st cycle of basic education, entered in the master’s degree in Pre-School Education and teaching of the first cycle of basic education. The overall objective was to promote the book and reading, seeking to contribute to the formation of readers with frequent reading habits. The theme came about by the need to understand what the role of the educator/teacher in promoting reading, given that this must orient their work in order to transform the school into a community of reading, in which the pleasure of reading is a fundamental achievement. It was also our purpose focus on the role of the family, taking into account the promotion of books and reading. The Research Dimension of the PES was based on participant observation; photographic records; in the formation and implementation of two surveys, one educator and cooperating teacher and another a sample of six children of the preschool group, which entered the school year following the first year of the 1st CEB. The results show that in both contexts, kindergarten and 1st cycle of basic education, there are few moments of reading stories, as well as the frequent use of the library area of the room. Through the analysis of surveys to education professionals, it turns out that both mention that there is the routine of reading stories, stressing that those moments were not observed during my observation and intervention. With the analysis of the surveys to the Group of children from preschool, they consider the moment of reading stories promoted by the educator, satisfactory.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the Jerusalem temple rebuilding and agriculture in the Book of Haggai. The Hebrew text is replete with agricultural terminology. However, very few have seen that this terminology is central to understanding Haggai’s promulgation that the temple must be rebuilt. In Haggai, agriculture provides crucial insights into Judean agricultural economy within the context of the Achaemenid Empire. This study also throws light upon the importance of agriculture as an economic factor in 6th century BCE Judah. In chapter 1, I situate my research within current critical work on Haggai. I show how earlier research primarily has concentrated on the “independent” sub-province of Judah without attempting to understand the Book of Haggai within the political and economic context of Achaemenid Judah. I also discuss methodology. Chapters 2 and 3 give overviews of the pertinent agricultural background for my study. In chapter 2, I survey agricultural developments in ancient Israel and in the ancient Near East. Archaeological excavations and surveys have revealed a considerable agricultural material culture in Judah. The archaeological record shows that olive and vine production was of great economic value in ancient Israel. The olive and the vine belonged among the most important agricultural products, highly sought after all over the ancient Near East. In chapter 3, I discuss Achaemenid imperial administration and economy under Darius. My claim is that Darius’s imperial policy was the same for all the different parts of the empire. Subsequently, I show how Judah constituted a vital part of the larger economic structure of the Achaemenid Empire. In chapter 4, I demonstrate how Judah, together with numerous other subordinate provinces, contributed to the economy of the Mesopotamian Empires. From an imperial, military, and economic point of view, Judah functioned as a buffer zone between the Mesopotamian Empires and Egypt. Accordingly, my interest is in the Judean political and economic situation in the early period of Darius, as described in the book of Haggai itself. Following the introductory chapters, chapters 5 and 6 provide an exegesis of the Book of Haggai. The purpose of my exegetical work is to demonstrate the relevance of agriculture for the Jerusalem temple rebuilding. Attention is particularly paid to terms like “drought” or “desolate” (Hag 1:4, 9, 11), “time” (Hag 1: 2, 4), “house” (Hag 1:2, 4, 8, 9; 2:3, 7, 8, 9, 15, 18), and “build” (Hag 1:2, 8; Hag 2:18). Chapter 7 contains the conclusion of the dissertation. Summing up, this thesis shows the importance of a prosperous temple economy in Jerusalem for all of Judah. Darius wanted to maximise the economic contribution of Judah. However, in his second year (520 BCE), the Judean agricultural economy was depressed because of drought, crop diseases, blight, mildew, and hail (Hag 1:5–6, 9–11, 2:16– 18). For this reason, Haggai encouraged the Judean people strongly to restore the Jerusalem temple. This would be the only possibility to expand the agricultural industry (Hag 1:7–8; 2:3, 8– 9). However, the temple still remained in a bad state (Hag 1:4; 2:3). Instead, the people wanted to rebuild the Davidic dynasty through Zerubbabel (Hag 1:4, 9; 2:4, 5–6). The Judean preference for the Davidic dynasty caused the end of Zerubbabel (Hag 2:20–23).

Abstract:
Language skills developed in early childhood are important for literacy and communication in childhood as well as future adult literacy skills and health. Certain demographic characteristics and parent-child interaction skills have been identified through previous research as being influential in child language development. Parental stress has also been associated with child language outcomes. This study aims to explore whether parents’ interactive relational skills, measured by an observational method, are significantly related to children’s verbal outcome, while controlling for demographic variables and parental stress. Participants included mothers of children aged 4-6 who completed measures of parental interaction quality, parental stress, and demographic characteristics. Their children competed a language skill measure. Results indicated that even when controlling for demographic variables and parental stress, the relationship between parent-child interaction quality and child language outcomes remained significant. These findings suggest that increasing positive parent-child interaction skills may be beneficial for increasing children’s language skills.

A dissertation submitted in the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a Masters degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013.<br>This study examined the relationship between the Child Support Grant (CSG) and teenage pregnancy. The first objective of the study was to establish the relationship, if any, between teenage pregnancy and the Child Support Grant. The second objective was to determine whether or not the variable of educational level, religious affiliation, and location play a role in teenage pregnancy and the support grant. In order to achieve the aims of the study, the researcher constructed his own scale. The study used a quantitative methodology to establish the relationship between Child Support Grant and teenage pregnancy. Questionnaires were used to collect data. The questionnaires were distributed to fifty participants representing the total sample of the study. These questionnaires were correctly completed and were analysed using SPSS. The chi-square measure of association was used to test for the relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy. The findings of the study indicated that teenagers differ in terms of whether there is a relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy. Forty eight per cent of the participants were found to have a negative view on the notion that there is a relationship between CSG and teenage pregnancy, and fifty two per cent were favourably disposed. However, the difference was not statistically significant. In answering the second research question, this study revealed that variables such as educational level, location and religious affiliation did not have any influence on child support grant. This was confirmed by statistical tests performed. The limitations of the study were identified and suggestions for further research were documented.

The current study examines the relationship between service utilization and child outcomes, and the role fidelity to the principles of the wraparound care coordination process plays in mediating that relationship. One hundred and twenty-one participants at three separate Children’s Mental Health Services (CMHS)-funded Systems of Care national evaluation sites in three states were administered the Wraparound Fidelity Index (WFI), designed to measure adherence to the principles of wraparound; child outcomes measures, including the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS); and the Multi-Sector Service Contact Questionnaire (MSSC), designed to assess services received. Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression and linear mixed models in order to examine the mediational role fidelity plays at two levels, children and wraparound facilitators, and at three different time points, baseline, six-month follow-up, and twelve-month follow-up. No statistically significant relationships were found between wraparound fidelity and child outcomes at six-month follow-up. Also, at six-month follow-up, the level of services the child and family received significantly predicted child outcomes related to externalizing symptoms but not to internalizing symptoms or functional impairment; however, this relationship was not mediated by fidelity to the wraparound process. From baseline to six-month follow-up and twelve-month follow-up, no statistically significant relationships were found between wraparound fidelity and child outcomes across wraparound facilitators. Also, no statistically significant relationships were found between the level of services the child and family received and child outcomes. A mediation model from baseline to six-month follow-up and twelve-month follow-up was not viable due to the null findings. Exploratory analyses were conducted. Implications of these findings and directions for future studies are discussed.

Cette thèse se donne pour objectif de contribuer à la compréhension des tendances démographiques en Afrique subsaharienne par l’examen de l’influence de la mortalité infantile sur les comportements de fécondité. Dans le premier chapitre, j’examine la relation entre mortalité infantile et fécondité à l’échelle micro-économique. Des modèles de données de comptage sont utilisés pour analyser les déterminants de la fécondité complète de femmes d’une communauté rurale sénégalaise. Je montre que l’effet global de la mortalité infantile est positif tant sur la fécondité totale que sur la fécondité nette. De plus, j’identifie une relation en U inversé entre mortalité infantile et fécondité nette. Dans le second chapitre, j’analyse les effets de la mortalité infantile sur les comportements reproductifs dans un modèle de fécondité endogène où la survie infantile est stochastique. J’adopte une forme fonctionnelle de coût des enfants englobant quatre scénarios différents, chacun représentant un contexte socio-économique distinct. Mon modèle peut prédire des réponses positives et négatives de la fécondité, selon que les enfants sont respectivement “intensifs en temps” ou “pourvoyeurs en temps”. Finalement, le troisième chapitre analyse les effets de la mortalité et de la morbidité infantiles sur le processus de décision de fécondité des femmes rurales sénégalaises. J’estime des modèles dynamiques non linéaires de données de panel. Je montre que la mortalité et la morbidité palustres à l’échelle de la communauté, ont un effet positif sur les décisions ultérieures de fécondité. Cet effet est d’autant plus fort que la maladie est létale pour les enfants infectés<br>This dissertation attempts to contribute to the understanding of current demographic trends in sub-Saharan Africa by examining the role of child mortality in shaping fertility behavior. In the first chapter of this dissertation, I examine the relationship between child mortality and fertility at the micro level. Count data models are employed to investigate the determinants of completed fertility of women from a Senegalese rural community. The global effect of child mortality on total and net fertility is found to be positive. I also identify an inverted-U shaped relationship between child mortality and net fertility. In the second chapter of this dissertation, I analyze the effects of child mortality changes on fertility behaviors in an endogenous fertility model where child survival is stochastic. I adopt a functional form for the cost of children that allows for four different scenarios, each of which is representative of a particular socio-economic setting. My model can predict both positive and negative fertility responses to child mortality depending on whether children are “time-intensive” or “time-supplying”, respectively. Finally, the third chapter analyzes the effects of childhood mortality and morbidity on the fertility decision-making process among rural Senegalese women. I estimate nonlinear dynamic panel data models of fertility behavior. I find that community child mortality and morbidity attributable to malaria exert a joint influence on fertility behaviors. Community-level malaria incidence among children has a positive effect on subsequent fertility choices, and this positive effect is stronger the more the disease is fatal to children who are infected

Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW)<br>Food insecurity exists when people lack access to sufficient quantities of safe and nutritious food which encourages normal growth and development. Given South Africa’s high poverty and unemployment levels, food insecurity has become endemic in many communities. The purpose of the study was to determine and explore the relationship between food insecurity, child care arrangements and the child support grant (CSG). The study was conducted among a sample of 120 participants, comprising both CSG recipients and non-recipients (who were purposefully selected from an ongoing cohort study), residing in Langa township in Cape Town. A sequential, mixed-model research design was used, in which both qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied. Data was collected by means of questionnaires, interviews and focus groups. The results were analysed using SPSS and Atlas ti software. The ecological systems theory being used as a theoretical framework to explore the different dimensions of child care arrangements. In the literature it is hypothesised that food insecure families are more likely to have child care arrangement instabilities. Interestingly, the study’s findings did not support this hypothesis. Although most of the participants were unemployed, they generally stayed at home to care for their children because they were recipients of the CSG. Therefore, despite being food insecure, many households had stable child care arrangements because of the CSG. Child support grant recipient households experienced hunger less acutely than households that did not receive the grant. Of course, social protection mechanisms, like grants, do not represent a sustainable solution to South Africa’s unemployment and food insecurity challenges. The researcher therefore provides a number of recommendations on how government and civil society can ameliorate the plight of poor households.

This study investigated the relationship of personality type and parenting style. Using a sample of convenience, 102 parents (71 female, 31 male) completed three tests: the Myers Briggs Type Indicator which measures personality types, 64 items from the Block Child Rearing Practices Report which measures parental child rearing attitudes and values, and FACES III which measures family functioning. Forty of the 64 items from the Block Child Rearing Practices Report clustered into two homogeneous groups that served as subtests for parenting style. A canonical correlation between four personality type scores (extraversion-introversion, sensing—intuition, thinking—feeling, judging— perceiving) and two parenting style scores (nurturance, restrictiveness) indicated significant relationships between personality and parenting. Parents who were strong on sensing and moderately introverted tended to employ a parenting style that was highly restrictive and moderately nurturant. The present study investigated the relationship between mothers', fathers', and parents' employment stability and five child cognitive and social outcome measures. A total of 179 children who attended Head Start between 1991 and 1995 participated in the study with their parents. Child outcomes were examined to determine if they varied as a function of employment stability categories. Children of parents possessing stable employment histories had significantly higher Woodcock-Johnson broad knowledge cluster scores than children of parents possessing unstable employment histories. Child outcomes generally did not vary as a function of employment stability categories. Number of employment changes was used to predict child outcomes after controlling moderating variables. Number of changes in mothers' and parents' employment accounted for statistically significant amounts of Woodcock- Johnson broad knowledge cluster score variance. Number of employment changes was generally a poor predictor of child outcomes.

Previous studies have shown that a child’s attachment relationship with the mother and the mother’s psychosocial functioning are influential to the child’s psychosocial functioning in terms of the development of psychopathology. The current study aimed to examine the relationships between maternal and child psychosocial functioning in terms of internalizing and externalizing symptoms and sleep problems, as well as child attachment quality. The potential mediating or moderating role of attachment quality in the mother-child psychosocial functioning linkage was investigated. A total of 151 children and their mothers from a local community sample participated in the study. The children reported on their sleep problems and attachment quality. The mothers reported on their sleep problems, their children’s sleep problems, their internalizing symptoms, and their children’s internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Results showed that maternal internalizing symptoms were predictive of child internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Attachment quality was predictive of child externalizing symptoms. The relationships among maternal and child sleep problems and attachment quality were inconclusive. No mediation or moderation effect of attachment quality on the relationship between maternal and child psychosocial functioning was suggested. Studies of the value relevance of accounting number in capital market research are consistent with the simple view that, in equilibrium, book values are equal to or have some long-term relationship with market values, and that market returns are related to book returns. This dissertation examines the value relevance of annually-reported book values of net assets, earnings and dividends to the year-end market values of five Japanese firms between 1950 and 2004 (a period of 54 years). Econometric techniques are used to develop dynamic models of the relationship between markets, book values and a number of macro-economic variables. In constructing the models, the focus is to provide an accurate statistical description of the underlying relationships between market and book value. It is expected that such research will add to the body of knowledge on factors that are influential to Japanese stock prices. The significant findings of the study are as follows: 1) well-specified models of the data generating process for market value based on the information set used to derive the models are log-linear in form. Additive, linear models in untransformed variables are not well-specified and forecast badly out of sample; 2) the book value of net assets has relevance for market value in the five Japanese firms examined, in the long run.

TITLE: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHILD CARE ISSUES AND SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT FOR LOW INCOME PARENTS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Cynthia Sims This mixed method study was considered and carried out to determine the relationship between child care issues and successful employment for low income parents. The study specifically sought to determine if accessibility to affordable and quality child care are barriers to employment for low income working parents who are recipients of the Illinois Child Care Assistance Program and who live in Williamson County, Illinois. There were a total of 117 respondents who participated in the study. A questionnaire was mailed to the study population and used to collect data for the study. Findings revealed that accessibility to affordable and quality child care was not a barrier for the respondents. An inference made regarding these findings is that because these respondents are recipients of the Illinois Child Care Assistance Program and their child care is subsidized, they do not have a barrier when accessing affordable and quality child care. Subsidizing child care for low income working parents provides them with the choice of selecting a quality child care provider.

Abstract:
Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with various immediate and long-term effects, including interpersonal maladjustment. Research has demonstrated a relationship between CSA and subsequent parenting outcomes, such as feeling less confident in the parenting role or being more likely to use harsh discipline practices. The current study examined the relationship between CSA and subsequent parenting skills, specifically perceived parenting competence and parenting practices. This study also examined the potential internalizing, externalizing, and overall problems in children of mothers sexually abused in childhood. Taking into consideration the failure in the literature to account for the role of other variables in determining parenting difficulties, this study examined the mediational role of childhood physical abuse and maternal depression on the parenting outcomes of mothers. The findings of this study indicated that sexually abused mothers did not significantly differ from nonabused mothers in how effective they felt as mothers. Contrary to the hypotheses, the results did not suggest that CSA mothers were more lax or over reactive than their nonabused counterparts. However, the findings revealed that compared to nonabused mothers, sexually abused mothers were more likely to employ hostile parenting practices. In addition, the results of the current study revealed that CSA mothers who reported being more lax in their parenting were more likely to have children who exhibited more externalizing and internalizing behavior problems as compared to the control group. In contrast, there were no significant correlations found between the parenting practices of nonabused mothers and their children's behaviors. The results provided support for maternal depression as a mediator in the relationship between CSA and parenting practices, specifically over reactivity and hostility. Maternal depression did not mediate the relationship between CSA and maternal self-efficacy, or between CSA and laxness. This study found support for the role of childhood physical abuse (CPA) as a mediator in the link from CSA to hostile parenting. However, the findings did not suggest that CPA mediated the relationship between CSA and the other parenting outcomes under study. Possible interpretations of the results are presented. Clinical implications and directions for future research are also discussed.

Noncompliant behavior in children may be due to the developmental stage the child is going through, but persistent noncompliance can have long-term effects on the child ranging from academic problems to relationship problems (Forehand & Wierson, 1993; Kalb & Loeber, 2003). Parents' response to noncompliant behavior may be influenced by their parenting style. Parental tolerance is one factor that may differ among parenting styles. Parental tolerance can be defined by how annoyed the parent becomes by disruptive behavior displayed by children and the affect it has on the parent-child interaction (Brestan, Eyberg, Algina, Johnson, & Boggs, 2003). One new measure of parental tolerance is the Child Rearing Inventory (Brestan, et al., 2003). The present study examined the validity of the Child Rearing Inventory (CRI) and investigated whether or not tolerance differs based on type of parenting style. The participants of this study are 109 parents with children aged 1 to 5 years old. Individuals completed a series of questionnaires. The results of the present study illustrate that the CRI is a measure of parental tolerance. Parents who were less tolerant of the child behaviors as described in the case vignettes endorsed higher scores on the CRI. The study also found that parents' tolerance levels do not significantly differ based on the parenting styles they endorse.

Abstract:
The relationship between sexual abuse and juvenile prostitution is explored through interviews with eight women who had had both of these experiences in their lives. Analysis of the narrative data identified both social-structural and intra-psychic factors that played a role in leading these sexual abuse survivors into juvenile prostitution. Social-structural factors are defined as the cultural and societal conditions within which children are raised and socialised and within which they must learn to function. The social-structural factors identified by this study were cultural factors, gender stereotyping, the family, the schools, social networks, social service agencies, employment opportunities, religious institutions, sexual abuse and entrance into prostitution. Social-structural factors affect the individual at the intra-psychic or psychological level. Intra-psychic factors identified here were alienation, identity and personal control. Sullivan's (1984) theory of critical interpretation was used to examine the limiting effects of the social structures on the lives, behavior and choices of these women. This research found that sexual abuse and the victims' responses to sexual abuse prepared and trained the young girls for prostitution. Further, alienation appeared to be a major determining factor that combined with the presence of sexual abuse influenced the outcome of juvenile prostitution. To examine the relationships among children’s temperament, parents’ attributions, parenting stress, and children’s behavior problems, the current study investigates the responses of parents who are raising children between the ages of 3- and 6-years. Each parent completed the Dimensions of Temperament Scale-Revised for Children (Windle & Learner, 1986), the Parenting Locus of Control Scale-Short Form (Rayfield, Eyberg, Boggs, & Roberts, 1995a), the Parent Attribution Test (Bugental, 1998), the Child Trait Rating Scale (Sacco, Johnson, & Tenzer, 1993), the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (Abidin, 1995), and the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000, 2001). Using correlational and regression analyses, results of this study suggest that difficult child temperament is related positively and significantly to an external locus of parental control, less positive child trait attributions, and higher levels of parenting stress, whereas easier child temperament is related to an internal locus of parental control, more positive child trait attributions, and lower levels of parenting stress. Although different patterns of findings occur for mothers and fathers, regression results indicate generally that parents’ attributions mediate the relationship between children’s temperament and parenting stress. <p> The current study investigated the relationships between mother-child, father-child, parent-cohesion, and children&rsquo;s self-concept. Participants included 30 early adolescents (ages 10 to 15 years) from intact family arrangements. Children completed a modified version of the Family System Test (FAST) to assess levels of parent-child cohesion. The Piers-Harris 2 was used to evaluate dimensions of self-concept. A series of sequential multiple regressions were performed to determine the relationships parent-child cohesion variables had with self-concept constructs, after controlling for the children&rsquo;s sex and typical grades. Only father-child cohesion scores significantly related to adolescents&rsquo; ratings on specific facets of self-concept (i.e., Behavioral Adjustment, Intellectual and School Status), suggesting that children who report feeling closer to their fathers also endorsed items reflecting less problematic behavior and more intellectual/academic competence. Findings suggest mothers and fathers contribute differentially to adolescents&rsquo; self-concept. Implications for parental education and ensuring children have a caring, male role model are discussed. Limitations to the study included issues with sample size, generalizability, and data collection.</p>

This study assesses the relationship between parental supervision and children's delinquency. Data used in this study came from interviews with 99 parents from the Denton city area of Texas in 2003. A probability sample of 53 was contacted by way of randomly selected residential telephone numbers. In addition, 46 parents were non-randomly selected. Parents were asked about how much time they spent supervising and engaging in activities with their children and whether or not the oldest child exhibited delinquent behavior such as fighting, playing hooky, and being sent to detention or the principal's office. The study found that the more time parents spend in supervision and in engaging activities with their daughters, the less likely these children were to exhibit delinquent behavior. This was consistent with previous research. However, the level of delinquency of boys increased with the increase in the amount of parental supervision time, especially by fathers.

The present study evaluated associations between parent-child connectedness and communication, parent perceptions of child weight, parent feeding behaviors (restriction, pressure to eat, and monitoring), and child body mass index percentile among a sample of children aged 8-12 years. To evaluate these associations, this study used a cross-sectional design and maximum likelihood (ML) structural equation modeling to examine a mediation model with parental feeding behaviors mediating the associations between parent-child relationship quality and child body mass index. Furthermore, because of the known associations between parental perceptions of child weight and parent feeding practices, models examining the mediating effects of parent feeding practices between parent perceptions of child weight and child body mass index were also examined. Finally, we used mixture modeling to conduct latent profile analyses, specifying high, moderate, and low levels of each feeding behavior, in order to examine the mediation effects of specific levels of feeding behaviors. Study findings supported restriction as a mediator between parent reported communication (PRC) and child weight, as well as between parent perceptions of child weight (PCW) and child weight. The results also indicated that parent perceptions of child weight predicted feeding practices and child weight. Both restriction and monitoring predicted child weight. Overall, these findings provide evidence for the role of parent-child relationship quality in predicting parent feeding behavior. However, study findings suggest that these associations may differ depending on the rater (i.e., child, parent).

Two major ideas dominate past literature on child labor. First, past literature continues to support the well-developed relationship between poverty and rates of child labor. Second, past literature continues to associate school attendance as the primary opportunity cost of child labor and juxtaposes the variables as a mutually exclusive trade off. The following project investigates both these ideas. By conducting several logit regression models between school attendance and participation in family-affiliated agricultural practices in Nigeria, the paper investigates a specific aspect of poverty (school attendance) while also providing empirical evidence to support the assumed relationship that education and child labor represent a trade off. The findings support the notion that school attendance correlates with a decreased likelihood of participation in moderate forms of child labor. Children in Nigeria who attend school are less likely to also have worked in a family affiliated agricultural capacity. The project concludes by discussing the potentially positive policy implications for eliminating exploitative child labor. By framing moderate agricultural labor as the most engrained form of child labor, the theoretical implications of the impact of school attendance on child labor becomes even greater.<br>Master of Arts

High parental expressed emotion (EE) is often associated with ADHD in childhood. However, the direction of causation in the relationship is not well understood: is it the behaviour of the child with ADHD (i.e., child effects) or shared characteristics of the parent or family more generally that are independent of a specific child (i.e., family effects) that predict parental EE? Furthermore, does parental EE predict child problems over time? In this thesis, child and family effects on maternal EE and child problems and the specific child and family characteristics that explain these effects were examined using cross-sectional and longitudinal multilevel models of sibling pair data in families of children with ADHD sampled from a longitudinal study. The results revealed a complex picture with both child and family effects implicated in predicting both maternal EE and child behaviour. Studies 1 and 2 (which cross-sectionally used Time 1 [T1; n = 72 families] and Time 2 [T2] data [n = 48 families] respectively) and the longitudinal analysis of Study 3 (n = 45 families) demonstrated that, except for warmth, child effects were stronger in predicting maternal EE. Child effects seemed to be driven by oppositional/conduct problems (OPP/CP) and emotional problems, rather than ADHD per se. Mothers’ depressive symptoms and overall family levels of child OPP/CP largely predicted family effects on maternal EE. Study 4 (n = 45 families), the second longitudinal analysis, found similar T1 child and family effects on T2 child problems. Increase in negative maternal EE from T1 to T2 significantly predicted T2 child OPP/CP. T1 family effects on T2 child problems were predominantly predicted by T1 maternal ADHD symptoms and average family (i.e., sibling pair) levels of EE. The results suggested a potential causal role of both child (especially OPP/CP) and family effects (especially average family levels of child OPP/CP) in predicting maternal EE. In addition, high EE may be a risk factor for child OPP/CP over time and maternal ADHD for both behavioural and emotional child problems. This may have important clinical implications for interventions with families of children with ADHD.

This study explored the relationship between mentoring and social workers’ job satisfaction and social workers’ intention to remain employed in child welfare. This study was conducted in Children Family Services (CFS), San Bernardino. Ninety six child welfare workers completed the survey using the JSS‑CW and the IRE‑CW instruments. A quantitative research design was utilized to analyze the data. Specifically, an Independent Sample T‑Test was used to analyze differences between the social workers who had a mentor and those who did not. Additionally, a Pearson R Correlation Test was conducted to analyze the relationship between mentoring and the different factors influencing the dependent variables. The present study revealed no correlation between informal mentoring and social workers’ levels of job satisfaction and their intentions to remain employed in child welfare in San Bernardino County. The study also revealed that although child welfare workers are highly satisfied at their jobs they still intend to leave child welfare if they are presented with a better job opportunity. These findings cannot be generalized because this study was designed specifically for San Bernardino County and the validity and reliability of the JSS‑CW is unknown. Further research on mentorship, more specifically formalized mentoring programs, is recommended.

This study investigated how education policy influences student success, and if there are linkages between K-12 education policy and higher education. Historically, education has primarily been a function of state and local governments. The role of the federal government drastically changed with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. This thesis focused on the influence of No Child Behind on several indicators of student success in K-12 and postsecondary education. All fifty states were examined in this study. This approach is rather unusual since it is typical to focus on one state or a small group of states. In addition to the state level analyses, macro analyses were also conducted to generate sounder policy prescriptions. This study tested three primary research questions. The first research question tested possible changes in several measures of student success since the implementation of No Child Left Behind. The second research question analyzed the relationship between K-12 education policy and higher education. The third research question addressed the possibility that state education reforms have had an impact on test scores, graduation rates, and college enrollment. Findings showed that K-12 test scores have improved on the national level since the implementation of No Child Left Behind, but there are several states that have witnessed a decline in test scores since legislation was enacted. There was no relationship between the state reforms and the variables that measured student success. This dissertation examined the relationship between food security status and cultural congruence and indicators of child growth and development in a rural mountain town in Costa Rica. Results show that children from food secure households are significantly shorter and shorter-legged than their food insecure counterparts. It is theorized that these findings correspond to low quality diets associated with increasing commodification of food systems in rural Costa Rica. Identity-based mechanisms are discussed as potential factors contributing to the increasing commodification of life through the encroachment of the global market economy.

Previous research has shown that adult attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance are associated with both coping strategy use and the parent-child relationship. Additionally, research has shown that coping strategy is associated with aspects of the parent-child relationship. The current study aimed to further examine associations between parental romantic attachment, coping strategy use, and the parent-child relationship. It was hypothesized that coping strategy use would mediate the relationship between parental romantic attachment and aspects of the parent-child relationship. Participants included 86 heterosexual couples (N = 176 parents) from the Family and Kid Connection project archival dataset. Instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, a brief measure of coping, and the Attachment and Relational Frustration Subscales of the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire. An actor-partner independence model was proposed and tested via multilevel modeling. Higher levels of parental attachment anxiety predicted poorer parent-child relationships. Father's attachment avoidance also predicted poorer father-child relationships. Higher levels of both parental attachment dimensions predicted greater use of avoidant emotional coping. Finally, greater use of avoidant emotional coping predicted poorer parent-child relationships. Results partially supported proposed mediational hypotheses. Two mediational paths were supported by results: an actor-actor path in which fathers' avoidant emotional coping mediated the association between fathers' romantic attachment avoidance and father-child attachment, and an actor-actor path in which mothers' avoidant emotional coping mediated the association between mothers' romantic attachment anxiety and mother-child attachment.

"Are the Letters of Horace Satires?" (Hendrickson 1897: 313). In response to this question, this thesis investigates whether Horace's Sermones and Epistulae 1 all belong to the genre of satura. Ancient and modern evidence from the use of the terms Sermones, Epistulae, and satura, is surveyed, and is found to be inconclusive, but not to preclude Epist. 1 as satura. The nature of specifically Horatian satura is ascertained from the text of Serm. 1, especially Serm. 1.1 and the explicitly literary Serm. 1.4 and 1.10. The redefinition of Lucilian satura, and its political implications are also considered. To confirm Epist. 1 as satura a sequential reading of the three libelli is undertaken, tracing the evolution of the theme of locus: place, both as geographical location, and as status, place in the social hierarchy, in the context of the socio-political environment of the time of composition. Serm. 1.1 as a programmatic poem is shown to establish Epicurean moderation as a prerequisite for a vita beata. In Serm. 1 Horace's status as client-poet of Maecenas and Octavian initially permits this ideal lifestyle in the Urbs. The misperceptions of outsiders lead to a preference for a life of Epicurean quietude in the rus in Serm. 2, although Horace's aequanimitas is disturbed by urban officia, and abuse of libertas dicendi associated particularly with Stoicism. The ideal of rural withdrawal is reinforced in Epist. 1 through an exploration of appropriate behaviour in relationships with potentes amici. Horace's addressees cover the entire range of the social hierarchy, and in his letters he utilizes the arguments of moral philosophy, thus reconciling poetry and philosophy. He achieves a pragmatic compromise whereby he can enjoy libertas in his role as a poet, while acknowledging that personal libertas and true aequanimitas are still to be attained.

Abstract:
In this paper we examine the short and long-term relations between stock price, book value and residual income.  We employ a panel error correction model, estimated with Engle &amp; Granger’s (1987) two-step procedure and the single equation methodology. The models are estimated with FE-OLS and the MG-estimator. We find that stock prices adjust previous periods equilibrium error. Further, we find that book value has short and long-term effects on stock prices. Finally, this paper finds mixed results regarding residual incomes impact on stock prices. The MG-estimator finds evidence for a short-term relationship, while the FE-OLS provides insignificant or weak support for short-term effects. FE-OLS and MG-estimator find insignificant or weak support regarding residual incomes long-term effects.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of the relationship between creativity, as measured by the Prose Quantification System (PQS), and standardized academic achievement as measured by the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS). The Prose Quantification System is a measurement of the creative quality of written prose. PQS story-starters were administered to 89 fifth-grade students enrolled in six classes in two schools in south central Kentucky. Each student received two story-starters about the same content (box or paper), but in a different context (usual vs. unusual setting) and was instructed to complete the stories. A total of 178 stories were collected. The CTBS was administered in the spring scan after students had completed the PQS story-starters. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that combined measures of elaboration and ideational fluency significantly contributed to the prediction of total CTBS scores, math concepts and applications scores, total reading scores, and language mechanics scores, while elaboration was the only significant predictor variable contributing to language expression scores. Although significant, contributions by the predictor variables were too small to have any practical value in predicting standardized academic achievement. Results of the study indicate that standardized achievement tests do not reflect all abilities used by students within the classroom.

The first five years of a child’s life represent a crucial period for development, and care settings impact children’s outcomes in a variety of domains. Preparation of teachers in order to provide a high-quality level of care that supports positive outcomes for children is critical. This report assesses the current state of the literature on effective professional development for early childhood professionals (primarily those working center-based settings with children ages 3 to 5 years), specifically as it relates to improved outcomes for children in the areas of social-emotional competence and language and literacy development. Methods for adult learning are also reviewed and recommendations for appropriate models of professional development based upon this review are provided. It is recommended that specific aspects within models of professional development be reviewed further to determine more concrete predictors in terms of what is effective for adult learning and application of concepts. It also is recommended that early care and education providers take part in professional development activities that have an added level of support and feedback, such as coaching, to assist in improving instructional practices to impact developmental outcomes in targeted areas, such as literacy.
