Full textSince 1945 the emphasis on rights has been an ever-increasing phenomenon while the influence of the church plays an ever-diminishing role in today's society. The irony of the situation is that rights have their source in religion. It is Locke who is credited with having put the question of rights into the mainstream of political thinking and it was Locke's faith in God that enabled him to put forward the political doctrine that will be considered in this thesis. The theme of this study is the reconciliation of traditional Christianity with humanist political theory's emphasis on rights in Locke's Political Philosophy which I have termed Theopolity. It traces Locke's thoughts, starting with his view on the creation of man which ultimately gives rise to natural and human rights. These rights, when violated by Government, legitimately result in revolution. Locke has three areas of thought, which when combined, give rise to his political doctrine. These areas are Epistemology, Theology, and Politics. He believed that after creation man was in the State of Nature. This state of Nature was controlled by the law of Nature which gave rise to, and preserved, Natural Rights. To ensure the protection of these Rights the individual entered into a Social Contract and so created a political society. Once society had been established, a Government was formed to ensure the protection of the individual by means of civil laws. These laws extended Natural Rights and these extended rights are known as Human Rights. This study concludes that John Locke's political thought is the most cogent political doctrine that can be adopted by rational individuals who share a strong sense of justice and morality in a Democratic Christian Society. It shows that Locke's pursuit of truth led to his basic, common-sense politics which was the embodiment of the true state of man in a society where the individual's God-given rights are respected.

Wax, Kevin Patrick. "The intricate relationship between politics and religion in the Hebrew bible : the prophet Amos as a case study." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85694.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Politics, in modern society, has become intimately associated with poor governance, fraud and corruption, social decay, abuse of power, indifference to the plight of the poor, squandering of critical resources and self-enrichment. This situation has been further aggravated by the debate that religion and politics should be kept separate at all costs. The demand for social justice in marginalised communities has increased dramatically over the last few decades. The escalation of human conflict, poverty, social inequality and corrupt practices across the globe over recent years, demands a radical reassessment of how the human race engages politically, socially and economically with each other. Hebrew classical prophets such as Hosea, Amos, Isaiah and Micah have through their messages of condemnation, indictment, punishment and hope confronted the serious political and social challenges that prevailed during and subsequent to their time. They demonstrated immense bravery against the established order of the day as they proclaimed Yahweh’s gross displeasure and divine judgement for the manner in which those in power had treated the poor. Amos, in particular, has captivated scholars over many decades as they dissected every emotion, historical context, social structure, biblical tradition and literary convention in order to understand his message. This study is an attempt to re-evaluate the critical balance between politics and religion as demonstrated in the divine mandate provided to kings, centuries ago in the ancient Near East, to rule in a just and righteous manner. An examination of the role and function of the prophets, their relationship with the political and religious structures of the day as well as an exegetical study of selected Amos texts has been undertaken to determine how this social imbalance was addressed by the prophets. A general hypothesis is advanced to restore this intricate balance between modern politics and religion. The study further enables a theological re-evaluation of how this balance could possibly be pursued as a potential catalyst for its overall social restoration.

Gilbey, Wayne. "Effects of Religious Motivation on the Relationship between Religion and Well-Being." Thesis, Walden University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3623162.
Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine whether intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religious motivations mediate the relationship between the religious philosophy and perceived well-being of believers. The intrinsic-extrinsic-quest paradigm has been the dominant measure of religious motivation for more than 3 decades. However, the different effects of intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest motivation on the well-being of believers has not been tested on a stratified, purposeful sample of the major world religions. A quantitative, quasi-experimental research design was used with an online, self-report questionnaire and mediation analysis to examine the effects of religious motivation on the relationship between religious philosophy and well-being. A stratified, purposeful sample of 763 members of the major world religions completed assessments of religion and well-being. Linear regressions revealed that intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religious motivations were three distinct constructs, that they do exist across the world religions, and that they mediated the relationship between different religions and well-being, depending on which predictor and outcome variables were being examined in the mediation triangle. Positive social change is possible for counselors, therapists, psychologists of religion, religious leaders, and laypersons at the individual and societal level through knowing which religious beliefs, motivations, and practices are associated with positive affect, satisfaction with life, the fulfilment of basic human needs, eudaimonic well-being, and better physical health. Individuals come to religion mainly during times of personal crises as a way of coping, expecting urgent results, and these findings illuminate the effectiveness of their chosen coping strategy.

Full textChronic hunger is among the most serious problems in the developing world today. When we consider hunger’s devastating effect on the health, welfare, and future prospects of the nearly 200 million children (or approximately 800 million people) that are chronically hungry, we realize that something has to be done.
Another serious problem concerns vast inequalities in access to agricultural land—a very important source of income and wealth in the developing world. Thus, after more than a decade in hibernation, land reform is back on the agenda in many developing countries. In the name of justice and rural poverty reduction, countries like Zimbabwe, Brazil, and South Africa hope to give the rural poor better access to agricultural land.
This dissertation investigates the potential for land reform as a means to reduce hunger in developing countries. Towards this end, it studies the relationship between land concentration and chronic hunger in the total population of 41 countries across the developing world. The study aims to establish whether countries with a more egalitarian distribution of land enjoy less hunger than countries where land is concentrated in the hands of the few. If this is the case, land reform could act as a means for reducing hunger.
I rely on an entitlement approach to the study of food insecurity, but see food availability as an integrated part of entitlement relations, mainly because of its effect on food prices. In particular, I devise a conceptual scheme over the complex relationship between land concentration and food insecurity among peasants, landless agricultural workers and industrial workers. This conceptual scheme builds on a dual economy perspective, and looks at the divergent effects of land concentration on the agricultural and the industrial sectors of the economy. A simplified model of this conceptual scheme is tested on the sample by way of multivariate regression analyses.
The most important finding of the study is that the effect of land concentration on food insecurity depends on the share of the population that relies on agriculture for a living, as well as the level of food availability in the country. These variables interact to produce very high levels of food insecurity in countries where there is a high level of land concentration, where a large share of the population depends on agriculture for a living, and where there is a low level of food availability. On the other hand, I find very low levels of food insecurity in countries with a high level of land concentration, where a low share of the total population depends on agriculture for a living, and where there is a high level of food availability. For this reason, I find both the highest and the lowest levels of food insecurity where land is concentrated in the hands of the few.
Another important finding of this study is that national food availability is much more important in relation to food insecurity than is usually assumed to be the case. For this reason the issue of food availability should be integrated more closely into the entitlement approach.
The dissertation (cautiously) concludes that very few countries are able to reduce their level of chronic hunger by implementing land reform. For most countries, land reform will most likely lead to more hunger. Moreover, by implementing land reform, countries (where land reform may help reduce food insecurity) may find themselves trapped in a situation with a medium level of food insecurity, from which it will be very hard to escape. This trap is a consequence of the low levels of agricultural labor productivity (and agricultural surplus available for industrialization) associated with a low level of land concentration.

The purpose of the research explores the relationship between religious religious beliefs and leisure activities and gives some helpful suggestion to the leisure policies, leisure industry, religious groups, and educators. The research is based on the empirical research data in Taiwan Youth Project: J1W9S and J1W8S,and analyzes the statistical results with descriptive statistical method and binary logistic. In conclusion, the researcher finds: 1. There is no obvious and direct relationship between different religious beliefs and leisure activities. 2. 47.09% objects of the project have no religious beliefs. Of all the objects with religious beliefs, the highest proportion is folklore religions, and the second is Buddhism, and the third is Taoism. 3. About the participation of leisure activities, the highest one is listening to music, the second one is reading, and the third is playing sports. 4. However, most objects of the study agree with not only the importance of religious beliefs and leisure activities but also the existence of souls. The researcher thinks perhaps trying to use more different religion and leisure variables and indexes can help clarify the relationship between both them. So the issue of the research is worth keeping studying.
