Abstract:
Purpose Previous literature suggests that people might purchase symbolic products to signal their social identity. However, in the organizational context, subordinates as customers might choose products with less brand prestige than what they want and can afford, just to make sure their choices are below the invisible “red-line” set by the brands of their supervisors. The authors term the phenomenon as “boss ceiling effect,” and term the behavior that people often downgrade their original choice to make sure the brand prestige is lower than that of the product owned by their boss as “downgrading behavior,” which have not been explored and well explained by existing literature so far. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct qualitative study to explore the existence of boss ceiling effect and providing possible influential factors of brand downgrading attitude. The quantitative study empirically examines the relationships among undesired self, perceived risk, organizational culture balance, and downgrading attitude and intension. Findings The authors find that undesired self-congruence and perceived risk are positively related to the downgrading attitude. In addition, the culture balance directly affects the brand downgrading attitude negatively and also moderates the relationship between undesired self-congruence and downgrading attitude positively and the relationship between perceived risk and downgrading attitude negatively. Originality/value The authors contribute to both organizational culture research and symbolic consumption research by considering symbolic consumption behavior in organization context. It is of great practical implications for marketers of symbolic consumption to understand the downgrading behavior.

Abstract:
The increasing trend of the employed female workforce, subsequently, augment their work associated with the employed male workforce. Hence, it provides a significant basis to undertake a research study for exploring employee working experience with opposite gender boss. The present qualitative research is based on ontological philosophical assumption having social constructivism as an interpretive framework and uses a phenomenological approach to extract the essence of employees lived working experience with an opposite gender boss. A semi-structured interview of not more than an hour was conducted with each of the 5 {Females (3) and Male (2)} employees of private higher education institute. The research reveals instead of boss's gender the employee working experience is based on Boss's Personality, Leadership Style and Professionalism. Further, the "Work Efficiency" and "Professionalism" of both male and female subordinates' increases while working with opposite gender boss. However, in terms of "Career Development" male bosses concentrate on developing subordinate's knowledge while female on the position. Also, Boss's personal conduct i.e. his/her age, dressing, and schedule don't contribute to subordinate's development. The research findings amplify knowledge base of employee working experience with opposite gender boss that can also be used to conduct further studies and solidify the subordinate-supervisor relationship.

Abstract:
Two fragmentary skulls from the Upper Permian Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone (Abrahamskraal Formation, Beaufort Group) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, represent a new dicynodont taxon. Lanthanocephalus mohoii gen. et sp. nov. is distinguished from other dicynodonts by the presence of a conspicuous laterally facing excavation on the dorsal surface of the postfrontal, by dorsal expansions of the supraoccipital that contact the parietals, and by extensive ossification of the lateral wall of the braincase. Lanthanocephalus features several characters that are suggestive of a close relationship with Endothiodon. These include a transversely narrow intertemporal region, the presence of a pineal boss, and the presence of a distinct boss on the ventral margin of the jugal. Cladistic analysis of a modified data matrix from the literature supports the hypothesis of a sister-group relationship between Lanthanocephalus and Endothiodon. However, this grouping and most others found in the analysis collapse with one extra step, weaknesses that underscore the need for further research on dicynodonts and other non-mammalian synapsids.

Abstract:
Becoming assimilated into the social environment at an organization is critical and challenging to newcomers. The present study examined whether newcomers’ trait positive affectivity (PA) could predict social assimilation through proactive relationship building behaviors including general socializing, relationship building with boss, and networking. Participants in this three-wave survey study were 323 new employees in three organizations in China. Results based on structural equation modeling showed that newcomers’ trait PA at T1 (within 2 weeks postentry) was positively related to all three dimensions of relationship building behaviors at T2 (8 weeks postentry); however, only general socialization was found to mediate the relationships between PA and two social assimilation outcomes at T3 (14 weeks postentry), that is, social integration and affective organizational commitment. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

Miceli, Katharine Elizabeth. "Who's the boss? an investigation into the complex relationship between endogenous retroviruses and nearby genes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/38133.

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly half of the human and mouse genomes is composed of transposable elements (TEs) which are pieces of DNA capable of or once capable of moving to different locations in the genome. These mobile elements can potentially impact host gene expression in a variety of ways either directly through insertional mutagenesis or indirectly by serving as an alternative promoter/enhancer or through modification of splice signals. In order to protect the integrity of the genome, various mechanisms have evolved to silence TEs. Chromatin modifications, namely DNA methylation and histone modifications, represent two methods of transcriptional silencing of transposable elements. In previous studies it has been shown that methylation of short interspersed nucleotide element (SINE) TEs in the plant and mouse genome can “spread” into flanking sequences. I chose to investigate this “spreading” phenomenon with respect to endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) which are highly active in the mouse genome. Direct evidence has been provided for ERVs in the mouse genome inducing the spread of repressive chromatin. However, the ability of ERV-induced “spreading” to impact nearby gene expression has not yet been characterized. In my thesis, I provide evidence for repressive chromatin spreading as an infrequent occurrence with the exception of the B3galtl gene where DNA methylation and repressive histone marks spread from a solitary ERV long terminal repeat (LTR) into the CpG island promoter of the gene, which correlates with reduced gene transcription. In most cases, however, I show that CpG islands are unmethylated despite the presence of a nearby methylated ERV. Furthermore, I show examples of differential epigenetic marking of insertions with the 3’LTR of the insertion located closest to the nearby gene exhibiting hypomethylation. In one case in particular, I show an interesting trend between expression of the CdGAP gene and hypomethylation of the nearby 3’LTR. These results lead to the conclusion that susceptibility to or protection from “spreading” of repressive chromatin marks is a locus-specific event that may be mediated by various factors such as the ERV-gene distance, the presence of a CpG island gene promoter, the chromatin state of the gene promoter, and the expression of the corresponding gene.

Abstract:
According to surveys conducted by the organization Ledarna, there is a recurrent problem of recruiting young women to senior positions. The purpose of this essay is to investigate what may affect women's desire to seek a managerial position and to design a HR strategy that promotes and motivates women to seek executive positions. Young women feel doubtful about manager positions because of the feeling of lack of experience and difficulty identifying themselves with the stereotype manage standard. Aspects of the management that motivate are the ability to influence, make decisions and gain personal development. The fact that a manager has a high workload is something that is referred to as negative while the challenge in the manager position attracted the interviewees. Focusing on difficulty in balancing work and private/family life can be an overriding explanation that fewer women choose a managerial career. In many cases, the manager position offers an opportunity for flexible working hours, which benefits the balance between work and private life. A key factor in combining management positions with family and children is an equal distribution of household work and responsibility for the children. Several of the interviewees have gained their position through encouragement, something that was crucial for the manager position. In order to motivate young women into management positions, engagement is needed in which female executive subjects are discovered and encouraged to career. The work is based on a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews as a collection method. The results are analyzed based on the theoretical reference frame compiled within the focus area. Throughout the structure of the work, the thematic approaches are based on the questions: What is it that makes young women doubt about leadership? What can motivate young women to want to become a manager? How can work life as a manager be combined with privacy/family life? How can recruitment be improved to motivate young women to seek executive positions?

Abstract:
The lived reality of membership of the Boys’ Brigade between 1883 and 1933 has been somewhat neglected in the field of youth histories. Existing histories have focused on the position of founders and headquarters of youth movements, thus neglecting the experience at the local level. Our current understanding of membership of youth movements is based on an interpretation that camping was the most appealing aspect, with historians including John Springhall and Stephen Humphries asserting that this element of the programme was the greatest attraction for most Boys. However, these arguments have not adequately addressed the role of camping within the broader programme of work of youth movements, have afforded insufficient attention to the relationship between the regular sessions and camp, and have overlooked participation figures. This thesis advances our existing understanding by addressing this issue within the specific context of the urban space, providing a unique insight into the lived experience of membership of a Boys’ Brigade Company, whilst offering a comparative aspect often lost in prevailing histories. Through contemporary accounts, statistics from annual reports, oral testimonies, and newspaper articles, this thesis demonstrates that the practical application of the agenda set at the apex of the organisation was applied differently across varied spaces. Additionally, through a more thorough examination of the lived experience of camping, this thesis argues that previous histories have placed too much emphasis on camping as an attraction for young people to join a youth organisation, with the position maintained here that this activity was available to limited numbers from the 1880s to the 1930s, with more Boys experiencing life in this organisation at the weekly classes. This shows that the existing consensus approaches youth movements in broad homogenous terms and overlooks the regional variances in application of the agenda set from headquarters. This is significant to our understanding as it indicates that the urban space was a unique environment where youth movements adapted to local circumstances. Therefore, the Boys’ Brigade is presented in this thesis as a vehicle to improve our understanding of the ways young people interacted in the urban space in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain. It offers an indication of the lived experience of membership of a youth movement that is missing from much of the existing histories and provides a clearer indication that the application of the organisation differed across space and place, thus presenting an original contribution to the field of youth histories.

Molomo, Ntsubise Regina. "Relationship between urinary levels of organophosphate metabolites and pesticide exposures among rural school boys of the Western Cape." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32859.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Biomonitoring of pesticides is an objective measure of short-term pesticide exposure as it measures possible exposure in the human body. Current evidence on the relationship between demographic, socio-economic and pesticide exposure risk factors and urinary levels of organophosphate (OP) pesticide metabolites among children is generally incomplete and conflicting in some cases. There is therefore a need for further research. Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between socio-economic, demographic and reported pesticide exposure related activities and characteristics in relation to urinary levels of three dialkyl phosphate (DAP) metabolites (diethyl phosphate (DEP), dimethyl phosphate (DMP) and dimethyl triphosphate (DMTP)) among boys living in the rural areas of the Western Cape, South Africa. Methods: This was an analysis of data collected during a cross- sectional study of 183 boys from three agricultural intense areas in the Western Cape of South Africa between April 2007 and March 2008. Measurements included a questionnaire on demographic, socio-economic and pesticide exposure risk factors and analysis of spot urine samples for DAP metabolites. Results: Most of the boys (70%) lived on farms with a median age of 12 years (range: 5.0 - 19.5 years). The median concentrations of DAP, DEP, DMP and DMTP were 68.3 ng/ml (IQR= 27.9; 129.5), 5.5 ng/ml, 32.6 ng/ml and 16.7 ng/ml, respectively. The sum of the three DAP levels wasinversely associated with age. Children older than 14 years had less DAP levels (β = -68.1; 95% CI: -136.8,0.6) than children 9 years and younger. DAP levels also varied significantly with residential area, with the levels highest in Grabouw (apple farming), followed by Hex River Valley (grape farming) (β= -52.1; 95% CI: -97.9, -6.3) then Piketberg (wheat farming) (β= -54.2; 95% CI:-98.8, -9.7). Other weaker and non-significant associations with increased DAP levels were found with increased household income, member of household work with pesticides, living on a farm, drinking water from an open water source and eating crops from the vineyard and or garden. Conclusion: The study found younger age and living in and around an apple and grape farms, to be associated with increased urinary DAP concentrations among the school children provide evidence that younger age and residential area can be associated with increased urinary DAP concentrations among boys. Additionally, there are other household and behavioural characteristics that are associated with elevated urinary DAP levels. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs to improve the statistical power and the associations found are recommended. The study provided more insight to incomplete and inconclusive evidence of previous studies.

Abstract:
Being literate has long been considered essential in order for individuals to make their way in the adult world, become productive and contribute to society (Olson, 1994). However, across the western world there appears to be a literacy crisis in the form of a gender gap in which ‘boys do less well than girls’ (Moss, 2007: 13). As a result, boys have been categorised as a problem (Clandinin et al, 2006). Previous research has focused on solving the ‘boy problem’, however, this study offers an alternative perspective in that it explores the complex relationship between pre-adolescent boys’ writing practices and their evolving identities in the domains of school and home. The study draws on sociocultural theories of New Literacy Studies and the concept of ‘Figured Worlds’, as described by Holland et al (1998) in order to consider how three 10 year-old boys participate in the production of themselves as writers and the impact of adult mediation on the boys’ developing identities as writers both at home and in school. This comparative case study is informed by both ethnography and narrative inquiry in order to produce three rich narrative accounts which are centred around the boys’ writing practices both in and out of school. Each narrative offers a unique insight into each boy’s life and their perception of what it means to be a writer through an exploration of their experiences, their ambitions and their relationships with people, technology and curriculum. The narratives are then compared to reveal key themes which highlight the ways in which wider policy and institutional demands influence local practices which in turn impacts on the boys’ identity formation. The significant findings relate to a common theme of relationships. Findings suggest that writing practices are bound to close familial relationships and to each family’s figurative or narrativised identity. Therefore, educators may need to look beyond engaging experiences in the classroom to the space and structures of homes in order to both fully understand boys’ meaning making and to inform their assessments of boys as writers. This extends the current research on early mark making and relationships in pre-school children to this under-explored group of pre-adolescent boys. In addition, the findings also suggest that the way in which schools engage with digital practices will have to be carefully considered if children are to understand digital communications as being writing and not talking. Therefore, the findings offer an alternative perspective to the two great divides in literacy, those being school and home and speaking and writing.

Abstract:
Friction damping devices such as under platform dampers are installed for modern turbine blades to suppress dynamic vibrations of the blades. In order to secure the reliability of the blades, it is important to predict the dynamic response and friction damping characteristics accurately. In this present paper, the dynamic response and friction damping characteristics of a last stage blade (LSB) of a steam turbine with contact surfaces at the cover, tie-boss and blade root was investigated. Especially, it is focused on the effect of the non-uniform normal contact forces at the contact surface. To investigate the effect of non-uniform normal contact forces, an analysis method was developed. Analysis model of the LSB with contact surfaces was discretized by finite elements. Tangential forces at the contact surfaces were modeled by multi-DOF macro-slip modeling. The non-linear frequency responses of the LSB were obtained by using the harmonic balance method. Using this analysis method, the relationship between the contact surface behavior and the dynamic response was studied.

Abstract:
In Kyoto bow fabrication, in order to bond each material, the glue which is made from the skin of the deer (Nibe) has been traditionally used. Recently, the synthetic adhesive is used instead of Nibe. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of the type of adhesive on the performance for the archer to draw Kyoto bow (Nibe bow and Synthetic bow). The measurement of motion was performed using MAC 3D system, and in order to clarify the relationships between the deformation and the load required to draw of the Kyoto bow, the motion analysis of the archer during the drawing motion of the Kyoto bows was performed by attaching markers and load cell onto the bows. In addition, the velocity of the arrow was calculated by the image processing. The loads and the maximum velocities of arrow with both bows were similar, however the arrow of Nibe bow drastically accelerates rather than that of Synthetic bow at the some point. Additionally, the time required to draw the bow of Nibe bow was significant shorter than that of Synthetic bow.

In ASME 2012 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Some 3D complex shapes such as stair and compound-hole in engineering design always contains various geometric face types, adjacent geometric constraints and typical design semantics. These 3D shapes can be defined as template design features because they are frequently reused for synchronous shape modeling to greatly accelerate design and analysis process. To recognize the complex template design features, we present a new multi-level attributed graph based shape matching approach. The core idea is the Multi-level Attributed Graph (MLAG), which describes not only the geometry face types such as plane and the geometry relationships between two adjacent faces such as tangency that are usually used for 3D shape retrieval and manufacturing feature recognition, but also the design semantic features among multiple adjacent faces even non-adjacent faces such as boss. Such design semantic feature will greatly benefit MLAG matching process, so that a complex template design feature can be efficiently recognized for design modification. Finally, two experiments with some kinds of template feature recognition are also shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
This study is a major part of the dissertation research. It is focused on the development of shooting skills in young biathletes in a three-year training period. Specifically, the long-term development of the percentage success rate of prone and standing shooting in both training and races is described in study. It mentions marginally shooting skills such as the postural stability, the stability of aiming and triggering. The first part of our research, completed in 2017, brought findings that the relationship between exercise intensity and the biathlete’s postural stability exists, but following part of it, finalized in 2018, did not demonstrate the dependence of exercise intensity on the aiming stability and triggering. Initially, the study involved 23 young biathletes (13 girls, 10 boys). Whole research was completed by 19 biathletes (11 girls: age 17.8±0.64 years; 8 boys: age 17.4±0.72 years) after three years. The results of our current study are based on the records of shooting on metal targets that were created during each biathlon shooting training and all biathlon races of the participants in the three-year period. Only shooting with previous physical load was involved into results, shooting at rest was not included in the study. The results show the improvement of the percentage success rate in both prone and standing shooting in the three-year training period in both girl and boy groups and in both training and races (total percentage success rate = the average of the training and races percentage success rate – girls in prone: 2016/2017: 71.3%, 2017/2018: 75.5%, 2018/2019: 80.0%; girls in standing: 2016/2017: 61.8%, 2017/2018: 67.7%, 2018/2019: 73.4%; boys in prone: 2016/2017: 72.0%, 2017/2018: 72.9%, 2018/2019: 75.3%; boys in standing: 2016/2017: 57.6%, 2017/2018: 63.5%, 2018/2019: 67.7%). Girls are better shooters than boys in this research group. In general, the gradual improvement of percentage success rate in time is expected to occur in young biathletes that are in the intensive training process, but our study brings unique data of concretely values at this age of athletes that has not been known yet. The obtained data could be used by biathlon trainers to compare the current level of shooting skills at a given age of their young athletes. At the same time, a normative standard of biathlon shooting skills in a given age could be created in the case of gathering more data. That is one of the goals of the Czech Biathlon Union.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2021: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2021-60036.

Abstract:
Abstract The rotor thermal sensitivity often affects the dynamic behavior of power unit generators. Owing to this phenomenon, increments of field current and other process parameters that are related to it may cause a shaft thermal bow and significant changes in the synchronous vibration. This symptom can also be caused by many other common malfunctions that affect rotating machines. Therefore, diagnostic techniques aimed at identifying the actual fault are very useful for optimizing maintenance activities. The thermal sensitivity of generator rotors can be deemed as a fault because it is commonly caused by a local deterioration of the winding insulation as well as by jamming phenomena between conductors and rotor slots, caused by friction forces due to the different thermal expansions of these components. This paper shows the results obtained applying a diagnostic method, based on multiple linear regression models, which has been developed for the analysis of generator vibrations caused by thermal sensitivity. Nevertheless, nonlinear relationships between vibration and process parameters have also been taken into account. The capabilities of this diagnostic technique have been validated using the analysis of experimental data collected in a power plant. The results of this investigation are shown and discussed in the paper.

Abstract:
Accurate identification of the relationships between permafrost extent and landscape patterns helps develop airborne geophysical or remote sensing tools to map permafrost in remote locations or across large areas. These tools are particularly applicable in discontinuous permafrost where climate warming or disturbances such as human development or fire can lead to rapid permafrost degradation. We linked field-based geophysical, point-scale, and imagery surveying measurements to map permafrost at five fire scars on the Tanana Flats in central Alaska. Ground-based elevation surveys, seasonal thaw-depth profiles, and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were combined with airborne imagery and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to identify relationships between permafrost geomorphology and elapsed time since fire disturbance. ERT was a robust technique for mapping the presence or absence of permafrost because of the marked difference in resistivity values for frozen versus unfrozen material. There was no clear relationship between elapsed time since fire and permafrost extent at our sites. The transition zone boundaries between permafrost soils and unfrozen soils in the collapse-scar bogs at our sites had complex and unpredictable morphologies, suggesting attempts to quantify the presence or absence of permafrost using aerial measurements alone could lead to incomplete results. The results from our study indicated limitations in being able to apply airborne surveying measurements at the landscape scale toward accurately estimating permafrost extent.

Abstract:
A high proportion of out-of-school children across the world live in conflict-affected contexts. To remove barriers to education for marginalised girls in those contexts, a key challenge is to understand the multiple and intersecting forms of marginalisation and their changing dynamics during violent conflict. Research from the REALISE education project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) identifies key considerations for education programmes for marginalised girls in conflict areas, such as inclusive education for girls and boys, links between education and peace-building, and extra-curricular activities to support social relationships.

Donnelly, Phoebe. Demystifying Gender Analysis for Research on Violent Extremism. RESOLVE Network, January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37805/rve2021.2.

Full text
Abstract:
Incorporating a gender analysis into research on violent extremism and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) leads to more accurate conclusions about violent extremism and violent extremist organizations (VEOs). When scholars, policymakers, and activists pay attention to gender dynamics, they gain new insights about power, identities, and relationships. Researchers cannot ignore the gender dimension of violent extremism because VEOs understand the importance of gender and leverage ideas about gender for their own advantage. Despite the clear benefits from incorporating gender into the research process, most researchers are not trained on gender analysis and therefore cannot envision what it looks like in practice. This chapter outlines some of the key steps in a gender analysis, including asking questions about the different experiences of men, women, boys, and girls; tracing power dynamics; recognizing intersectional identities; analyzing context; and challenging existing knowledge and conventions. The goal of this chapter is to demystify gender analysis so that it becomes an approachable tool researchers choose to use to gain a more accurate picture of contexts of violent extremism.
