Goranson-Coleman, Jane Susan. "The relationship between family rituals and family functioning in the remarried family." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29716.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper proposes that remarried families who have a higher level of family ritual observance will also have a higher level of family functioning. This hypothesis was tested in a study involving 60 individuals comprising 30 couples remarried over two years, and with a stepchild under 13 years of age. Each partner responded to a questionnaire composed of family functioning measures (FACES Ill-Adaptability and Cohesion subscales, Family Satisfaction Scale, Quality Marriage Index) family ritual measures (Family Traditions Index, Family Celebrations Scale, Family Time and Routines Index), and demographic information. Data was examined using Correlation, Analysis of Variance, and Regression analysis. Results indicate that women experiencing a higher level of family routines also experience greater family satisfaction. Additionally, women who had counselling in the remarried family, report greater marital quality, and women who work outside the home report a higher level of adaptability. For men, a higher level of cohesion and family celebrations were found for men where the remarried family includes a child from the current marriage. These results suggest that awareness of family rituals present in remarried families and the effect of particular demographic variables can be useful information for both family therapists and the families themselves.

Abstract:
Problem: Family firms often comprise of a complex web of relationships between family and non-family managers that are active within the business. Family enterprises are also known for their closed communication and decision-making practices. It often occurs that families do not include non-family managers into important business-related discussions and do not consult their decisions with managers from outside of the family. At the same time, research in the area of family business defines that the relationships between family and non-family managers are highly linked to the success of a business. With these considerations in mind, this study investigates how family and non-family managers communicate in family businesses. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to create an understanding of the phenomenon of communication and information-sharing between family and non-family managers in small and medium-sized family firms in Sweden. In particular, we are investigating the distinctive characteristics of communication, the barriers to effective communication, and what business-related information that is not shared between family and non-family managers. Method: This study is conducted qualitatively, utilising multiple case studies. For the collection of empirical data, we conducted twelve semi-structured interviews with both family and non-family managers in three small and medium-sized family companies located in Sweden. Findings: Our findings show that there are multiple distinctive characteristics of communication in family firms. Additionally, we uncovered several groups of barriers that hinder effective communication between family and non-family managers in family companies. Additionally, we found out that there is numerous business-related information that is not shared between family and non-family managers. Contributions: Our findings contribute to the managerial and theoretical understanding of communication and information-sharing between family and non-family managers in family businesses. This thesis is of interest to any individual working in or with family companies, as well as, academics, who investigate the field of family business.

Guinn, Megan D. "Sibling Relationship Quality: Associations with Marital and Coparenting Subsystems." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc177205/.

Full text
Abstract:
Marital relationships play an important role in family functioning and in the development of sibling relationships. From a family systems perspective, other subsystems within the family, such as coparenting interactions, could explain the effects of the marital relationship on sibling bonds. Specifically, the quality of the coparenting relationship may mediate the association between marital functioning and sibling relationship quality. The current study examined relationships between these three subsystems (marital, coparenting, and sibling) as self-reported by mothers, fathers, and children with siblings. As part of a larger project, families with a child aged 8 to 11 and at least one sibling (N = 75) completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Coparenting Scale (both completed by mother and father), as well as the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (completed by target child). Results suggested that marital functioning is a significant predictor of functioning within the coparenting relationship. Predicted associations did not emerge between sibling relationship quality and marital or coparenting relationships, with minor exceptions, and the coparenting relationship did not mediate the association between marital and sibling relationship quality. Implications of the current findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between family downhill skiing patterns and family functioning. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES II), was used to measure family functioning. Questions created by the researcher were used to measure the average number of family ski experiences per year (frequency) and how many years the family has skied together (duration). Satisfaction with family ski experiences was measured using the Satisfaction with Family Skiing Scale. The sample consisted of 110 family units from throughout the United States. The findings from this study found that frequency and duration of family ski experiences were not significant predictors of family functioning. The data did determine that satisfaction with family ski experiences was a significant predictor of family functioning from the youth, parent, and family perspectives.

Adler, Jeffrey Steven. "Siblings of Incest Victims: Sibling-Victim Relationships and Adjustment." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc330888/.

Full text
Abstract:
The non-victimized siblings in incestuous families have often been ignored in research, literature, and treatment. This study explored these siblings' 1) relationship to the victim, 2) attribution of blame, and 3) adjustment. Participants were 30 non-victimized siblings of incest victims, between the ages of 8 and 14. They completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire, the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, the Self-perception Profile for Children, the Children's Depression Inventory, and a questionnaire developed for this research. Participants' scores were compared with the normative sample scores on several measures. Siblings perceived little warmth and closeness in their relationships to their victimized sisters. Rivalry and conflict were within normal limits. Siblings blamed victims and other family members less than expected, with the greatest amount of blame attributed to perpetrators. Adjustment was impaired. Males demonstrated less athletic competence, less global self-worth, more worry and oversensitivity than normative samples. Females showed a tendency toward less global self-worth and heightened general anxiety. Siblings' overall level of emotional distress was higher than most of the normative samples.

Bruno, Denise Marie 1965. "The relationship of family of origin and codependency." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291811.

Full text
Abstract:
The records of 160 patients from a dependency treatment center in Arizona were reviewed in an effort to substantiate the hypothesis that specific clusters of problems stand out as being characteristic of people seeking help for codependency. Research focused on family of origin and childhood experiences in relation to individual codependency levels. The presence of parent's chemical abuse, reported childhood physical and/or sexual abuse and identified dysfunctional family characteristics and each patient's DSM III diagnosis were recorded. Results were analyzed by comparing these variables to the patient's scored codependency level. The hypotheses were confirmed by the following findings: (1) As a subject's chemical dependency increases, codependency level decreases; (2) when sexual and physical abuse are reported, level of codependency increases; (3) as number of dysfunctional family of origin characteristics increase, codependency level increases; and (4) certain DSM III diagnoses related to level of codependency. An insignificant relationship was found between parent's chemical abuse and level of codependency indicating a null hypothesis.

Zhang, Yan, and 张琰. "Relationship between family members' oral health behaviours andstatus." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50662284.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases in Hong Kong. Family as a basic societal unit has an important role to play in shaping the individual member’s behaviours and health status. However, most dental research studies focus on modifiable risk factors of individuals rather than those of a family. Objectives: 1. to describe the oral health behaviours and oral health status of family members in a selected sample of families in Hong Kong; 2. to assess the relationships between oral health behaviours and oral health status amongst the family members; 3. to assess the influence of socio-economic factors, lifestyle factors and oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behavioural factors on oral health status of the spouses; and 4. to assess the influence of parental factors on the child’s oral health behaviours and status. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using a combination of a random household and a purposive sampling was conducted. The study population was 5 to 7-year-old children and their parents in Hong Kong. A clinical examination and a questionnaire survey were conducted on the core family members (parents and children) of the recruited families. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized multivariate models which tried to investigate the complex relationships among different risk factors and oral health status. Results: A total of 432 families with targeted children, 373 fathers and 424 mothers were recruited. The mean DMFT/dmft score of the father, the mother, and their children were 7.2, 6.2, and 2.6, respectively. Around half (52%) of the fathers and one-third (35%) of the mothers had periodontal probing pocket(s) deeper than 3mm. In the structural equation models, strong positive correlations were found between the oral health behaviours of fathers and mothers (∅=0.98, p<0.05), mothers and children (∅=0.79, p<0.05), and fathers and children (∅=0.74, p<0.05). Positive correlations were also found between the oral health status of fathers and mothers (∅=0.43, p<0.05), mothers and children (∅=0.33, p<0.05), and fathers and children (∅=0.30, p<0.05). Fathers’ oral health status was directly affected by their oral health behaviours and smoking habit, and indirectly affected by their socio-economic status and oral health knowledge and attitudes. The explained variance of fathers’ oral health status was 47%. The mothers’ oral health status was only directly affected by their oral health behaviours and indirectly by their socio-economic status and oral health knowledge and attitudes. The explained variance of mothers’ oral health status was 53%. Children’s oral health status was only directly affected by their oral health behaviours and indirectly by their mother’s socio-economic status, mother’s oral health knowledge and attitudes, and mother’s oral health behaviours. The explained variance of children’s oral health status was 26%. Conclusion: Oral health behaviours and status are correlated among family members. Children’s oral health status is affected by their oral health behaviours, which may be affected by parents’ socio-economic status, oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours.

Abstract:

The number of children in the United States for whom English is not the language spoken at home is increasing. The National Center for Education Statistics (as cited in Hammer, Scarpino, & Davison, 2011) reported that, in 2007, 10.8 million school-age children in the U.S. spoke a native language other than English, an 11% increase in just 25 years. Of these English language learners (ELLs), Latinos represent almost 80% (Jerome, 2009). Numerous studies have shown the importance to both students and schools of meaningfully engaging families in the school environment. This comparative case study focuses on the practices of two elementary schools that successfully promote the engagement of families of Latino ELL students and is intended to increase understanding of the necessary relational components, or the ways that individuals are connected, that promote family engagement in school environments with populations of primarily Latino students and a majority of English language learners (ELLs).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure satisfaction and satisfaction with family life. Zabriskie's Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure core, balance, and total family leisure satisfaction. The Satisfaction With Family Life Scale (SWFL) an adaptation of Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin's satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), done by Zabriskie and McCormick, was used to measure satisfaction with family life. The sample consisted of 898 parent and youth pairs from throughout the United States. Results indicated that there was a relationship between all family leisure satisfaction variables and satisfaction with family life. Data collected from both parents and youth in families provided insight into the nature of the relationship between family leisure satisfaction and satisfaction with family life. At the parent, youth, and family levels, core family leisure satisfaction had the most significant relationship with satisfaction with family life. These findings provide specific implications for researchers, parents, and professionals who work with families.

Abstract:
While many studies have investigated grandparenthood from the point of view of the grandparent, few have considered this issue from the perspective of the grandchild. In this respect, a number of variables (i.e., grandchild age and gender, parents' marital status, and grandparents' age, gender, education, kinship position, residential proximity to and frequency of visiting with grandchildren, perceived influence on the grandchild, style of grandparenting, and relationship with the parents) were investigated as determinants of the quality of the grandparent-grandchild relationship in a sample of 171 adolescents and young adults. It was found that different sets of variables operated for different grandparents to predict the quality of their relationships with grandchildren.

Abstract:
A Bachelor's Family is a memoir of relationship, exploring --from a male point of view--my trajectory to a 'circumstantially childless' middle age. The thesis argues for this memoir and my concurrently written magazine column In The Male, to be read in the context of 'masculinity politics', specifically as a site of what Bob Connell terms 'masculinity therapy'. As a writer heretofore of fiction, the fact that I should find myself working in these forms of creative non-fiction--both attempts to discuss aspects of contemporary masculinity in the public sphere--reflects not only recent industry and reader interest in the form but, with its emphasis on the 'healing possibilities' of truthfulness and personal disclosure, embraces the essence of 'masculinity therapy'.

Abstract:
Understanding the contingencies that explain whether divorce has positive or negative long-term effects for adult children is at the heart of this study. Although previous studies suggest an association between parental divorce and the divorce of adult offspring, less known is about whether the timing of divorce influences the relationship outcomes of adult children. Using a large nationally representative sample in terms of race (N=6,066), eight groups of individuals (males and females from intact homes, males and females who experienced divorce during adolescence, males and females who experienced divorce during middle childhood, and males and females who experienced divorce during preschool years) were analyzed to examine the impact of divorce and its timing on family impact, emotional regulation, and relationship quality. Findings indicate that divorce, in general, negatively influences family impact, emotional regulation, and relationship quality. However, the developmental timing of divorce does not appear to significantly alter the impact of these variables on relationship quality.

Abstract:
Introduction: Family firms serve as major block in the economy all over the world, i.e. it’s significance cannot be understated. In spite of this, many firms fail to continue the firm’s quest beyond the second generation partly because of conflicts in the firm. Conflicts, which could be divided into task, relationship and process conflict, have been deemed to only be detrimental for family firms. As such, limited knowledge exists as to what positive effects conflict may bring about in family firms. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore what the positive effects of different conflict types may be in family firms. The different conflict types are in this respect deemed to be task, relationship and process conflict. Method: The empirical material used for the purpose of this study has been gathered through 10 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 9 different family firms. The data collected has subsequently been analyzed and conceptualized using grounded analysis (codes to themes) with an overall inductive method. Conclusion: Our findings and analysis suggest that several positive effects are associated with the different conflict types in family firms and that the family dimension of the firm work as enablers for these effects to occur. Task conflict produces a sharpened environment for task accomplishment through the enabler proximity to top level of firm. Relationship conflict result in stronger group cohesion through the enabler family feeling. Process conflict generate improved focus on task through the enabler going concern of the firm.

Abstract:
While there has been extensive research on the quality of life for people with disabilities, very little research has been conducted on the way in which families impact the quality of life of these individuals. This study focused on how family dynamics impact the quality of life for people with disabilities who are clients of state vocational rehabilitation agencies. Specifically, family flexibility and cohesion, as well as family resilience, were the independent variables; quality of life was the dependent variable. It was found that family functioning and family resilience play an important role in the quality of life for people with disabilities. There was a strong relationship between family functioning and quality of life, in addition to family resilience and quality of life. Ten life domains were used to examine quality of life: physical health, mental health, work/education, leisure activities, relationship with significant other, family relationships, social relationships, financial situation, independence/autonomy, and religious/spiritual expression. For each domain, the participant was asked four questions on the importance, control, satisfaction, and impact of disability. Family functioning and family resilience significantly correlated with all of the 10 life domains on most of the four factors. Family dynamics account for 36% of the variance of quality of life. Family dynamics significantly impact the quality of life for people with disabilities and therefore should be taken into consideration in the rehabilitation process.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology)) --University of Limpopo, 2010
This study examined the relationship between parenting styles, parental punitiveness and family structure, and antisocial behaviour, as well as the influences of parental educational levels on respondents’ antisocial behaviour. Participants consisted of 227 male and 140 female students from the University of Limpopo, whose ages ranged from 17 to 24 years. Families were classified into one of four parenting styles (namely, authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent and neglectful) on the basis of respondents’ ratings of their parents on two parental dimensions: warmth/acceptance and supervision/control. The respondents were then compared with antisocial behaviour. The results indicated that the difference between the four groups of parenting styles did not reach statistical significance on antisocial behaviour. As well as the relationship between family structures and antisocial behaviour did not reach statistical significance. However, there were significant and positive relationships between parental punitiveness and antisocial behaviour. There were significant relationships between parental educational levels and antisocial behaviour. Parental warmth and supervision were also significantly and negatively related to the respondents’ antisocial behaviour. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study are described.

Abstract:
A descriptive study was conducted to examine the relationship between family support and elder well-being of a group of ambulatory elders living in the community. Information regarding the elder parent's reporting of the overall support received by adult children and its affect on well-being was sought. Forty five female subjects, aged 65 to 91 years, participated in this study. The subjects completed a questionnaire which included the Demographic Questionnaire, Family Support Exchange Questionnaire, Family APGAR, and Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale. The sample population was homogeneous and no significant correlations were demonstrated between quantity or quality measures of family support and elder well-being. The study findings were consistent with previous studies in that elder parents generally live in close proximity to at least one adult child and have frequent contact with them. Elderly parents were satisfied with the support they received from children and would confide in their children.

Haydon, Clive Gordon. "The Relationship Between Identity Development and Family History Knowledge." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2549.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between identity development in late adolescent university students and family history knowledge. The relationship was examined within both the individual developmental and family systems theoretical frameworks. It was proposed that identity development involves achieving personal autonomy from the family of origin and at the same time maintaining positive relatedness to the family of origin. Identity development was examined using exploration, commitment, autonomy, and relatedness as dependent variables. It was proposed that late adolescent's personal exploration of and commitment to roles and values may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. It was also proposed that late adolescent's achievement of personal autonomy and positive family relatedness may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. The sample consisted of 239 university students. The Parental Relationship Inventory (PRI) and the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ) measured identity development constructs. The Do You Know? (DYK) scale measured family history knowledge. Multiple regression analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between commitment and family history knowledge and relatedness and family history knowledge, a negative relationship between autonomy and family history knowledge, and a weak correlation between exploration and family history knowledge. Findings indicate family history knowledge may influence components of identity development. This has practical implications for parents and others such as teachers, youth workers, social workers, and youth program designers whose work is directed at enhancing adolescent development.

McCubbins, Jennifer Lynn. "Transition into Kindergarten: A Collaboration of Family and Educational Perspectives." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9894.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, research has focused on children's transitions from preschool into kindergarten. Parents, teachers, and schools recognize the importance of the transition from preschool into kindergarten and its possible influence on children's adjustment and long term school success. However, as the philosophies and policies of kindergarten have emerged and evolved, so have the views of parents and teachers regarding children entering kindergarten. Research shows parents and teachers have conflicting views regarding the expectations for children in kindergarten. While the quality of a child's transition to kindergarten is an individual experience, there are some universal factors of influence in any transition. These factors include communication among teachers and parents and establishment of relationships among the three protagonists: child, parent, and teacher. Throughout this thesis, I present data that examines the expectations and concerns for the children entering kindergarten from a parent and educational perspective. I also provide transition activities practiced in the home and school environment. The most important aspect of the transition process involves focusing on the relationships between child and teacher, parents and teacher, child and peers, and child and parent. I include parent and educational perspectives of these relationships and relate how these relationships enhance children's transition into kindergarten.

Patterson, Lindsey B. "Family relationship quality and acculturation: Examination of their relationship among Latino adolescent sexual offenders." PDXScholar, 2010. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/165.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on child sexual abuse (CSA), from the perspective of the perpetrator, has been conducted to better inform intervention and prevention programs. Although information from perpetrators can be beneficial for these programs, much of the research is limited by the diversity of sample populations of sex offenders. Moreover, potentially distinct variables relevant to specific populations (e.g., Latinos) have not been thoroughly studied in relation to CSA. To better understand the perpetration of CSA on variables that may be of particular concern to Latinos (i.e., relationship quality in familial supervision and acculturation strategies), the purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between supervisor relationship quality, acculturation, and adolescent group membership (i.e., juvenile sex offender - JSO and juvenile comparison - JC). It was hypothesized that Latinos who are assimilated or marginalized are more likely to belong to the JSO group than the JC group. Further, Latino adolescents characterized by an integrated or separated acculturation strategy are more likely to be affiliated with JC group than the JSO group. It was also hypothesized that participants' relationship with their familial supervisor will predict adolescent membership and that acculturation will mediate this relationship. Results for both hypotheses were inconclusive. The probability of using a specific acculturation strategy was not statistically different for either adolescent group. The relationship between supervisor relationship quality and juvenile group membership was non-significant; therefore, the meditational role of acculturation could not be assessed. Further research, using a larger sample size with more complete data is recommended. Suggestions for other design improvements are also provided.

Hale, Gregory T. "Living out the script : family of origin violence, family relationship patterns, anger expression, and spouse abuse." Virtual Press, 1988. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/558338.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies on spouse abuse have typically focused on the frequency of the violence, the individual characteristics of abusers and victims, and the sociocultural aspects of the problem. Many of the current findings remain isolated. A comprehensive model explaining the causes of spouse abuse is lacking. The present study tested the premise that spouse abuse is a multidimensional problem, resulting from several factors in combination with one another. Two hundred nineteen students, faculty, and staff from a midsized university were surveyed regarding: (a) family of origin relational patterns: (b) childhood exposure to violence; (c) current anger expression; (d) attributions for abuse; and (e) current relationship violence. Based upon the existing theoretical literature, the variables formed a conceptual model describing relationship conflict behaviors. It was hypothesized that: (1) family of origin relational patterns and childhood exposure to violence would predict current anger expression and attributions for abuse: (2) current anger expression and attributions for abuse would predict current relationship conflict behaviors; (3) the relationships in (1) and (2) would be stronger than other possible relationships.Analyses were completed in two stages. First, the latent variables in the conceptual model were described through factor analysis of the measured variables. Composites representing measured factors containing the latent variables were placed into the hypothesized model. Second, canonical analysis evaluated the significance of the hypothesized and alternate relationships between factors. The hypothesized model was confirmed with some revision. The results indicated that violent behavior between men and women was most directly linked to current anger expression. Attributions about spouse abuse were not found to be related to current relationship violence. Anger expression appeared to be influenced by the family of origin relational patterns, childhood exposure to non-spousal violence, and a history of committing violence against adults during adolescence. Abuse between parents was not directly related to anger expression or relationship conflict. Abuse between parents was only influential when combined with an exposure to non-spousal violence during childhood. A revised model, which included a new factor called sociopathic features, was developed. It was concluded that relationship violence is best explained by a combination of these psychosocial factors. Implications for practice with spouse abuse are also presented. Given that anger expression appears to be the major factor, the most appropriate treatment may be that which focuses on anger expression and control. Future research is needed to evaluate this revised model of spouse abuse, and to identify potential ways of intervening in this developmental process.

Ruth, Diana Ross. "Choices of family therapy intervention methods and therapeutic skills: their relationship to family therapists' academic backgrounds." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91151.

Full text
Abstract:
A continuing debate in the family therapy field revolves around the issue of the academic backgrounds of therapists. Is family therapy a separate discipline learned in programs of Marriage and Family Therapy or a discrete set of skills acquired during clinical training in diverse academic and training settings? A survey of 345 student, associate, and clinical members of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) was conducted to examine the relationship between their academic backgrounds and their preferences for particular intervention methods and skills. Subjects rated their preferences for 50 therapeutic skills on a revised, self-report form of the Family Therapist Rating Scale (FTRS). When their scores were analyzed across the five scales of the FTRS (Structuring, Relationship, Historical, Structural/Process, and Experiential Behaviors), no significant differences were found across academic backgrounds, age groups, or AAMFT membership status. There was a tendency for the therapists who had more years of clinical experience to show less preference for the more directive skills on the Structural/Process Behaviors Scale. The best discriminator of therapists' choices for intervention methods and skills was their specialized training in specific models of family therapy.

Full text
Abstract:
This study assesses the contextual aspect of working in a family business on intimate relationships. Guided by principles of ecological theory, this study explores the unique situation of individuals who work with an intimate partner in a business they own and how this situation manifests itself in their close relationship. Individuals in a family business are confronted with a potentially unique family-work experience, especially for spouses/partners who work together in a business. It is hypothesized that objective and subjective work time influence couple relationship quality. Six specific hypotheses centered on the connection between family and work microsystems as well as the influence of macrosystem beliefs regarding family, work, and gender were assessed by regression analysis. Ninety-nine individuals completed a demographic and daily diary online. The sample was 52.53% men, 78.79% White, and educated (63.63% held at least Bachelor degrees). The majority of the sample was legally married (91.92%), with an average relationship length of 16.20 years (SD = 12.74 years). Regression analyses revealed limited support for the hypotheses. For people in family businesses, working more hours was associated with greater withdrawal from their intimate partner. Perceiving work time as sad was linked to more withdrawal from partner and more anger with partner, but not linked with feelings of closeness to partner. People who felt time at work as appreciated reported feeling closer to their intimate partner. The more respondents believed it was meaningful to distinguish between work and family, the less closeness to their partner they reported. Finally, age was significant for relationship quality, with younger individuals reporting more withdrawal and anger with partner and less closeness to their partner than did older individuals. This study contributes to research exploring the connection between family and work among individuals who work together in family businesses. While objective work time was associated with the measure of withdrawal from a partner, objective work time did not significantly contribute to the report of anger with a partner or closeness to a partner. Overall, how individuals felt during work time had an effect on their spousal/partner relationship, with feeling sad at work associated with more relationship withdrawal and anger, and feeling appreciated at work associated with more closeness. Limited support for the model suggests there may be unique processes of work and family operating within family businesses. Although work and family microsystems were connected in this study of family business owners, the links between work and family were different from previous research on dual- and single-earner families. Future research should untangle the processes through which work and family and time are connected, with attention to larger cultural influences, particularly how individuals within family businesses do work and family and how families ascribe to and enact gender within family businesses. In addition, further research should assess the degree to which microsystems can be differentiated in populations characterized by an extreme mesosystem connection between work and family.

The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship among family stress events, family function, and codependency. Samples consist of 420 students from senior high schools and vocational high schools in Changhua. Family Stress Events Scale, Family Function Scale, and Codependency Assessment Scale were used in this study. Results are analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, and causal step. The conclusions are as follows: I. Gender difference for teenagers is significant on family stress events but not on family function and codependency. 1. Females sense higher stress than males on family stress events. 2. There is no gender difference among teenagers on family function and codependency. II. Family patterns play an important role on family stress events, family function and codependency. 1. Teenagers in single-parent families sense higher stress on family stress events than those in two-parent families. 2. Teenagers in different family patterns have the same family function. 3. Teenagers in single-parent families have higher degree of codependency than those in two-parent families. III. Family function medially affects family stress events, which influence codependency for teenagers. According to the conclusions from this study, suggestions are proposed for teenagers, parents, institutions of family education, and further academic research.

The main purposes of the study were to develop a family relationship program of family education curriculums, and to investigate the effect of this curriculum program on junior high school students’ family relationship perception. A quasi-experimental design was adopted in this research. 120 eighth-grade junior high school students in Taoyuan City participated in the experiment, with 62 in an experimental group and 58 in a control group. The experimental group was provided with “family relationship program of family education curriculums” for six weeks, two classes per week, the control group had no intervention. Both groups of students were asked to fill out the “family relationship questionnaire (FRQ)” three times, before, after, and four weeks after the intervention. During the research, the experimental group was required to write the “work sheets” and “feedback sheets”. The important findings were as follows: 1. The family relationship program of family education curriculums was designed to provide family education as a reference in the future. 2. All participants percieved good family relationships. 3. Right after the intervention, here was a significant effect on the perception of whole family relationship and all aspects of family relationship in the experimental group. 4. Four weeks after the intervention, here was a significant effect on the perception of whole family relationship in the experimental group. However, there wasn’t a significant sustained effect on the perception of all aspects of family relationship.

Based on the structural family theory developed by Minuchin (1974), this study uses the data of “Panel Study of Family Dynamics” to analyze the relationship of family harmony and family structure. We expect the study can promote affection of the spouses, parents and sibling, so as to the entire family harmony. The empirical results are as follows. A clear boundary can promote a family subsystem’s affection when husband and wife can cooperate in key questions and show respect to each other; when caring, loving, and supporting behaviors exist in parental interaction; when sibling incline to the team cooperation in key questions. On the other hand, the enmeshment and disengagement boundary will result in family subsystem’s instability when traditional concept for spouse bothers each other; when parents fight frequently. Besides, we find the more consciousness degree of piety the more it promotes the parental and sibling’s affection.

Work and family lives are two inseparable domains for employees in the organizations. That causes a lot of research attention on studying work-family linkage and conflict, and on how job satisfaction being affected. The highlight of this research is to understand the impact of employees’ relationship and closeness with their family members, defined as relationship quality, on the relationship between work-family linkage, work-family conflict, and job satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to find out the following questions: 1. How perceived work-family linkage is affecting work-family conflict, and how relationship quality is moderating? 2. How perceived work-family linkage is affecting job satisfaction, and how relationship quality is moderating? 3. How can work-family conflict affect job satisfaction? The result indicates a strong relationship between work-family conflict and job satisfaction. Moreover, relationship quality plays a significant role in influencing the relationship between work-family linkage and work-family conflict. Therefore, if the organization intends to improve job satisfaction, they should really work on eliminating work-family conflict. In the meantime, employees’ relationships with their family members should be valued so that work-family conflict can be decreased.

The impact of organizational Work/Family Policy on employee’s family life and his/her performance is the focus in this study. Meanwhile, we also try to examine the potential moderating effects coming from firm’s family friendly culture, employee’s perceived usability of Work/Family policy, Work/Family balance, and human resource policy on those relationships. Research data were collected from Taiwanese employees through questionnaire. We sent 2000 questionnaires to 1000 companies listed in Common Wealth survey of Taiwan 2001, and ask their employees to provide necessary information. 258 questionnaires are usable and the return rate is 12.9%. After the works of recording and transforming survey data, we proceed statistical analysis, including correlation, factor, and hierarchical regression analysis. Our findings can be summarized as follows. Firstly, there exist significantly positive relationships between firm’s Work/Family policy and employee’s perceived Work/Family balance. Secondly, our data partially support the positive relation between Work/Family balance and employee’s individual performance. Thirdly, the higher degree for firms to adopt High Commitment Work System (HPWS), the more likely they tend to implement Work/Family policy. Meanwhile, HPWS positively moderate the relationship between Work/Family policy and Work/Family balance. Fourthly, support from high level managers will positively moderate the relationship between Work/Family policy and Work/Family balance. Finally, the expected moderating effects coming from employee’s perceived usability of Work/Family policy as well as Work/Family difficulty are partly supported. The main contribution of this research is to investigate the impact on employee’s Work/Family balance from the perspective of firm’s Work/Family policy and, which have not been examined in the previous research. Furthermore, several potential moderating variables, such as HPWS, family-friendly culture, and perceived usability were employed and tested in the first time. Our research findings shall be quite useful in assisting with Taiwanese companies when setting up their employee benefit policy and program.
