Merk, Patricia Ann. "Conceptualizing the Relationships Between Grandmothers and the Grandchildren They Are Raising: A Grounded Theory Approach." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194050.

Abstract:
Using a grounded theory approach (Strauss & Corbin, 1990), this study produced a conceptual framework for exploring the relationships between grandmothers and the grandchildren they are raising. Twenty-one grandmothers and grandchildren were engaged in in-depth interviews. grandmothers had legal custody of the participating grandchildren for at least the last six months. Grandchildren were between the ages of 7 and 14. Data were analyzed using open coding, axial coding, and selected coding. Four of the seven grandmothers were found to have a similar pattern due in large part to their daughters having a long history of drug addiction. These four grandmothers are the focus of the model. The remaining three grandmothers have dissimilar situations, but support the model as well. The study proposed a three-phase model of the relationships. These phases included: rescuer/protector, caregiver/provider, and mother/advocate. The model described movement from each phase through contextual conditions. The mother/advocate phase became the most developed phase of the model. Eight strategies used by the grandmothers to manage the mother/advocate phase are proposed. In addition, seven intervening conditions were identified that either constrain or enhance the strategies.

The study examines survey of grandparents caring for grandchildren. The main objective was to understand the considerations of the grandparents when they are assigned the task of caring for grandchildren whose parents work outside. For research we used the methodological approach of focus groups, preceded by the bibliographical survey on the topic. The theoretical content explores themes related to changes in contemporary family, the effects of intergenerational relationships and behavior of grandparents today and in Western societies. On this theme, the discussion about the thought of some authors argued reflections reached from the results obtained with the focus group meetings. Two focus groups were conducted with grandparents caring for grandchildren in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi. In the four meetings grandmothers participants reported and discussed issues and situations related to their experiences with their grandchildren, exchanging experiences and impressions. The data were processed through the content analysis and presented in categories drawn from the theoretical study. The results suggest the grandparents difficulties in dealing with the allocation of caring for grandchildren. At the end of the meetings the participants themselves come to the conclusion that each one must find the best way to be a grandmother in the contemporary, combining personal development and good family relationships. It was observed in groups of grandmothers difficulties in dealing with this topic in social relations. It was evident that in countries like Brazil there is no public policy sufficient to drive the contemporary changes in family group. Also notable was that providing a focus group to grandparents caring for grandchildren has allowed, in addition to data collection, the possibility of being a technical resource available to grandparents. It was evident that this technique helped the participants to express their opinions and encouraged self-reflection among them. Finally, the study indicates the need to provide grandparents caring for grandchildren, through public policies and social actions, which conditions they may have an interaction with their grandchildren in a more playful, based on values that their own grandparents consider paramount in the relationship with the children.

Abstract:
Throughout the life course, all family members can expect to find themselves in some type of caregiving role. Individuals may find themselves providing care for a child or for an older family member who needs assistance. With the increase in life expectancy and the shrinking family size, individuals may find themselves spending time providing care to older family members. Despite the fact that caregiving related issues are well researched in the field of gerontology, the developmental experiences of grandchildren caregivers and the meanings of their caregiving experiences have not been explored in previous empirical work. Influenced by symbolic interactionism theory and the life course and life-span perspectives, the research questions that guide this study are: What is the nature of caregiving from the perspectives of grandchildren in the grandparent-grandchild relationship? What meanings do grandchildren give to the caregiving role? A qualitative study was conducted to examine the experiences of adult grandchildren (21-29 years old) who were currently providing some type of care-related activity for at least one grandparent. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews, lasting 30-80 minutes, with 17 grandchildren caregivers were conducted one time to examine the participantsâ caregiving experience. All interviews were completed at a location of the participantsâ choice. Interviews were tape-recorded and tapes were transcribed verbatim to aid in data analysis. Grandchildren caregiversâ experiences illustrate variation with the reasons for providing care and the amount of time engaged in care related activities. Grandchildren were assisting with instrumental activities of daily living and activities of daily living. Reasons for providing care included grandparentsâ chronic illness or gradual aging, a crisis or event that left grandparents needing assistance, and because they had been providing care since they were young children. The amount of time grandchildren engaged in care related activities ranged from daily to several hours a week during summer and winter breaks. Grandchildren caregivers reported that family values, making grandparents happy, and preparing for the future were how they made sense of their role. Grandchildren experienced benefits and drawbacks from assisting grandparents and discussed how parents served as mediators and distracters to their caregiving role. Grandchildren caregivers exhibited the ability to adapt to caregiving situations and develop coping mechanisms that allowed them to be successful caregivers. Service professionals may want to include grandchildren caregivers in established support groups, caregiver programs, and enhance caregiver resources to support the generational needs of grandchildren caregivers in their 20s.

Abstract:
This cross-sectional study compared three groups of grandparents, two custodial and one noncustodial, to identify and delineate the unique challenges and expectations faced by custodial grandparents due to their nontraditional roles while attempting to disentangle grandparental role demands from child-specific problems as sources of distress. Those grandparents raising grandchildren demonstrating neurological, physical, emotional, or behavioral problems exhibited the most distress, the most disruption of roles, and the most deteriorated grandparent-grandchild relationships. Although the custodial grandparents raising apparently normal grandchildren demonstrated less distress, less disruption of roles, and less deterioration of the grandparent-grandchild relationship than those grandparents raising grandchildren displaying problems, they still demonstrated higher levels than did traditional grandparents. Those grandparents who reported fewer resources, demonstrated poor attitudes regarding seeking mental health services, and reported raising grandchildren displaying problems had the lowest levels of adjustment.

Pitcher, David. "Knowing me, knowing you : a study of relationships between adopted children and their grandparents." Thesis, University of East London, 2007. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3843/.

Full text
Abstract:
The way in which relationships develop between adopted children and their 'new' grandparents is a matter of great interest to adoptive families and those working with them. However, it has received little attention in the academic or clinical literature. This study seeks to explore this aspect of family life. At the heart of the study is a set of qualitative interviews with six adoptive families. All three generations were involved. The interviews were analysed using two approaches: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, and an approach viewing the respondent as a 'defended psychosocial subject'. From the findings, which are presented using the case study method, there emerges a picture of grandparents as being of great significance within the adoptive families. Their attitude towards adoption, and towards the adopted children, appears as especially significant. Adoption involves three generations. This study then develops a theoretical understanding of the findings. The grandparent is a "witness" to the adopter as a parent. Developmental processes, such as the child's gradual separation from the mother, are worked out differently within adoptive families, and this takes place within the 'family field'. The study concludes with recommendations for practice and policy. This study will be of relevance, not only to members of adoptive families and those working with them, but also to those involved with other family forms, such as step-families and foster families.

Abstract:
This thesis examines intergenerational relationships between grandparents and grandchildren from the child’s point of view. In an effort to understand these relationships better, 36 boys and girls aged between seven and ten years were interviewed in the course of six meetings, which took place during school hours. The children interviewed came from middle and upper middle class families in the city of Porto Alegre (in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul) and belong to four different family types: nuclear, single parent, reconstituted and three-generation. This enabled intergenerational relationships to be studied in different circumstances. In this thesis, children talk about how they live in their families and about how contact with grandparents is established within the family structures under analysis. The children’s biographies show the effect of divorce and remarriage on intergenerational relationships, the importance of ties established by the middle generation and a strong propensity to establish and maintain contact with the maternal family line. In their experience as grandchildren, boys and girls report moments of care, discovery, adventure and play, and their grandparents’ home appears in its full relevance and uniqueness. This is an important place in the child’s world, and the children show, through their knowledge, that living with grandparents contributes to the constitution of the childhood self. Intergenerational contact is revealed to be an interactive and co-educational process, which provides old and young alike with opportunities to learn and teach. Children’s ties to their grandparents may be so strong that not even the latter’s death can break them.

Abstract:
This study investigated the intergenerational relationships between grandparents, parents and children from Bangladeshi British families in East London, and the impact these relationships had on the learning that took place between the generations. The study also investigated how this contributed to the child's learning experiences at home and at school. I collected data within an ethnographic framework using participant observation, interviews, questionnaires and video recordings. Through an ethnographic approach and an approach to analysis which I refer to as an ‘analysis of verbal and non-verbal interactions’ I was able to analyze the data from the four children, their grandmothers, mothers and teachers who participated in the study. The analysis highlights the complexities of their interactions and the way learning took place as each child completed a puzzle with the help of their mother, grandmother or teacher. The study reveals how the children negotiated their way through the different intergenerational interactions to complete the puzzle activities, bringing together the jigsaw pieces of their learner identities to construct their ability to be ‘Flexible Learners’ as a whole. I argue that children consciously adapt their learning styles depending on the adult they are interacting with and the context in which that learning experience takes place. I emphasize that their ability to do this and the contribution of the grandparents to this role are not adequately acknowledged at present. There is also evidence that participants bring their ‘funds of knowledge’ (Gonzalez et al, 2005) to the way in which they think learning should take place, and this enables the child to develop what I refer to as ‘learner flexibilities’ which is a skill that needs recognition within families and schools in order to improve children’s educational and cultural experiences.

Abstract:
In today’s society the bond between grandparents and grandchildren is of special relevance and, in many instances, grandparents are the ones who care for their grandchildren. Likewise, it is known that diseases have an impact on families, and this is even more the case with Alzheimer’s disease, since there is evidence showing that the toll on the caregiver in this disease is greater compared to other chronic diseses. Besides, it is socially accepted that small The central aim of this thesis is to identify the knowledge, experiences, feelings and concerns of children ages 6 to 13 with regard to their grandparents’ Alzheimer disease. The methodology was a qualitative study from a phenomenologycal approach. It is also intended to find out whether parents have noticed changes in their children related to this experience. Access to respondents was through primary health care and Family Associations. It was held a homogeneous intentional sampling respect to all children had the grandfather with Alzheimer illness and stratified to incorporate the different sub-groups: boys /girls, rural or urban area, living with the grandfather / or no, they have been cared for the grandparent / or no, that parents participate in a family association or not, mother as a primary caregiver or not. 25 semi-structered interviews were conducted with grandchildren and 25 open interviews with only one parent. In interviews with grandchildren 7 and 8years old the interview was initiated with a tale to facilitate trust and reduce the influence of the researcher. Content analysis of the interviews was performed with the a proach of Taylor-Bogdan (discovery, coding and relativization). The validation was carried out by triangulation of researchers, by the use of different data sources and high saturation The results show that the more expressed fear is your granfather not recognizes them. Most of the grandchildren accept the grandparent’s disease and they talk about positively them because they hold memories of moments shared by both when the grandparents were healthies. Grandchildren considered beneficial to maintain the relationship with his grandfather, despite the changes that occur in it, why you still love. They say that to interact with them facilitates learning values such as a care of elderly people and understanding of the difficulties. Conclusions : Positive feelings that most children say it are: affection, love and appreciation for help in the care of his grandfather. The negative feelings present in the majority of grandchildren are sadness, worry and anger at the grandfather disease situation. The effects on sleep were exclusively reported by the grandchildren who live with her grandfather. All the children participants agreed that they also look after for their grandparents, even the smallest and expressed it give them a great satisfaction

The purpose of this study was to understand the connection of grandparents’ involvement, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, and the feedback from grandchildren of the undergraduates. It also attempted to investigate the effects of grandparents’ involvement and the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, on the feedback from grandchildren. A questionnaire was used in this research for undergraduates who studied in Fu-Jen University, and had grandparents that were involved when they were growing up, and are still alive. The tools used in this research were “demographic information”, “grandparents’ involvement scale”, “relationship between grandparents and grandchildren scale”, and “feedback from grandchildren scale”. There were four hundred and one valid subjects recruited in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analyses, reliability analyses, one-way ANOVAs, Pearson’s correlations and multiple regression analyses. The main results are as follows: 1.The undergraduates perceive that “concerning behavior”, “caring behavior”, and “controlling behavior” as three dimensions in grandparents’ involvement. Among three dimensions, concerning behavior is the most frequently present in grandparents’ involvement. 2.The undergraduates perceive that the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is good and close and that they can also help each other. 3.There are six dimensions of undergraduates’ perceptions about their feedback with grandparents: “independence and self-control”, “emotional support”, “living assistance”, “feedback”, “accompany and consideration”, and “sharing personal information”. Independence and self-control is the most frequent perception, emotional support is the second most frequent perception, and sharing personal information is the least frequent perception in the feedback from grandchildren scale. 4.Regarding the differences among personal background based upon the gender of undergraduates and the healthy situations of grandparents, the significant differences are found. 5.The correlation shows that the grandparents’ involvement, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren are positively related to feedback from grandchildren. Subsequently, the regression analyses indicate that grandparents’ involvement, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, and undergraduates’ personal backgrounds do show significantly positive associations with feedback from grandchildren Key words: feedback from grandchildren, grandparents’ involvement, relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, undergraduates.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceived grandparents’ involvement, filial role, and intergenerational relationship closeness among grandchildren. The researcher also attempted to examine the effects of gender, age, living distance, contact frequency, and parent-child relationships on intergenerational relationship closeness between grandparents and grandchildren. Questionnaire method was used to conduct the empirical research on Junior High School Students in Taipei City in the academic year of 2013. The researcher used convenience sampling procedure to recruit participants. A total of 997 valid questionnaires were obtained. The questionnaire consists of 76 items and the instruments include “demographic information,” “grandparents’ involvement scale,” “filial perception and conduct scale,” and “relationship closeness scale between grandparents and grandchildren.” The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, K-means clustering, Pearson’s correlations, and multiple regression. Findings were concluded as follows: 1. Significant differences were found on intergenerational relationship closeness on age, living distance, contact frequency, and parent-child relationship (p < .05). 2. Significant differences were found on intergenerational relationship closeness on perceived grandparents’ involvement, and filial role and conduct (p < .05). 3. Significant positive relationships were found between perceived grandparents’ involvement, and filial role and conduct (α = .52 - .64, .20 - .29, .25 - .37, p < .05). 4. Significant predictive power of intergenerational relationship closeness was found on “degrees of close relationships with grandmothers,” “living distance between the grandparents who had the most frequent interactions with the participant,” and “frequency of interactions between the grandparents who had the most frequent interactions with the participant” (R2 = .29). 5. Significant predictive power of intergenerational relationship closeness was also found on perceived grandparents’ involvements, and perceived filial roles and conducts (R2 = .41, .08, .14). Abstract:
The present study, is based on the Relational-Symbolic Perspective and has, as its main objective, the knowledge of the dynamics of a couple of grandparents in the case of the presence of a chronic disease in one of the elements. In this sense, the Generational Clinical Interview was used, which is constituted as a qualitative instrument that allows to study the generational changes in several situations of a couples´ life. The study was carried out with an elderly couple, from a small village in the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. The couple´s female element is a retired 76 years, and the male element of the couple is 77 years old, retired, and suffers from Parkinson's. The results apparently indicate that the disease does not have a significant impact on family dynamics and relationships. High parenting is not portrayed, which may have been compromised by the limitation of the interview. This study assumes an innovative character, which prevented the access to the necessary information and, in turn, the in-depth study of it. However, it is believed that future studies, using this instrument, may allow access to this information.

"Turning Points and Trajectories Within Long Distance Grandparent Grandchild Relationships." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.14640.

Abstract:
abstract: This study examines long-distance relationships between grandparents and their adolescent grandchild through the qualitative identification and analysis of relational turning points and trajectories. A sample of 30 grandparents yielding 99 individual turning points allowed for an in-depth understanding of these relational constructs that previous research neglects to explore from the perspective of a grandparent. A constant comparative analysis of these turning points reveals 8 distinct categories of relational turning points including Spending Time Together, Family Relational Dynamics, Geographic Distance, Lack of Relational Investment, Use of Technology, Relational Investment, Lack of Free Time, and Grandchild Gaining Independence. These turning points vary in how they positively or negatively impact relational closeness between participants and their grandchildren. The use of Retrospective Interview Technique (RIT) yields 30 individual relational trajectory graphs categorized into five trajectories including Decrease in Closeness, Increase in Closeness, Multidimensional Changes in Closeness, Minimal Changes in Closeness, and Consistent Relational Closeness. Results provide theoretical contributions to aging and family literature as well as practical findings pertaining to current and future grandparents. These implications as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
A recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that over 5 million or 7% of our nations children are being raised in grandparent headed households. In many of these homes no biological parent resides. Families is which grandparents are raising their grandchildren have become a widespread distinctive familial structure. In fact, between 1980 and 1990 there has been a 44% increase in grandparents raising grandchildren due to issues such as parental substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, teenage pregnancy, and general parental incompetence. This reconfiguration of the family occurs across many socioeconomic and ethnic groups. Over 500 grandparents participated in this study, which explores the complex issues related to the emergence of this contemporary family structure, including parental substance abuse, child abuse, neglect and abandonment, and the critical needs of the children. It is of great importance that the needs and issues of these families are understood, so that they may be addressed through effective social and educational policy that will help insure healthy lives for the next generation of parents and their children.

The purpose of this research focuses on grandparents’ parenting and the mental relationship between grandparents and grandchildren in families of grandparents raising their grandchildren. The requirement for families of grandparents raising their grandchildren is that grandchildren have to live together with their grandparents every day in a week; furthermore, grandparents are obligated to care and parent their grandchildren. The analysis on grandparents’ parenting is based on “response parenting” and “demand parenting”. The response parenting refers to grandparents’ support, encouragement and acceptance for grandchildren’s daily practices and behavior. Then, the demand parenting refers to grandparents’ regulation, control and demand for grandchildren’s daily practices and behavior. The data of this research is obtained by questionnaires which focus on the junior high school students from families of grandparents raising their grandchildren. The samples are adopted by purposive-sampling method. 30 public high schools in Taipei county and Taipei city (including the junior high school departments in senior high schools) are involved in this research. There are 615 questionnaires issued to conduct this research in total. Among them, 369 questionnaires are responded; furthermore, 288 questionnaires are valid. The following is the findings: 1. In families of grandparents raising their grandchildren, the first one who takes the duty to take care of grandchildren is their grandmothers, the next, their maternal grandmothers, then, their grandfathers, and the last, their maternal grandfathers. The result reveals that females take more duty in caring their grandchildren than males and paternal grandparents take more duty than maternal grandparents. 2. The major cause for families of grandparents raising their grandchildren is divorce. And the next cause is the fact that their parents are so busy on jobs that they cannot take care of their children. The third cause is the death of either side of parents or the death of both parents. 3. The analysis on grandparents’ parenting is divided into response parenting and demand parenting. In grandparents' "response parenting," the first three most common parenting are the hospitalization , the correction of errors and the encouragement for academic performance of their grandchildren. However, in grandparents' "demand parenting," grandparents put priority to their grandchildren’s daily practices. 4. In this research, the factors in grandparents’ parenting of families of grandparents raising grandchildren are discussed. As for the variables of grandchildren, grandparents and family backgrounds, if their grandparents own better health condition and the relationship between fathers and children is better, grandparents will more likely to adopt response parenting. On the contrary, in grandparents’ demand parenting, there is no obvious connection with the variables mentioned above. 5. In short, the mental relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is quite good in families of grandparents raising their grandchildren. Among all factors in the mental relationship of grandparents and grandchildren, the relationship with their fathers and the response parenting of their grandparents can fully explain the mental relationship of grandparents and grandchildren, which is based on the variables of grandchildren, grandparents and family backgrounds and their grandparents’ parenting methods.

Abstract:
The demographic and social changes and the increasing participation of the woman in the labour market and the financial crisis lead to opportunities for grandparents to assume a more important role in the family and in providing care to grandchildren. In my childhood, I remember spending a lot of time with my grandparents and this relation was and it is very important, given the influence and mutual share of knowledge. This personal experience is at the origin to my interest in the subject of grandparents-grandchildren. I choose the children as the target population, intending in this way, to distance my study from most of the research that focuses mainly on grandparents’opinion about interaction with their grandchildren. I opted for a qualitative study, with a comparative analysis of the interaction between two groups: that of the grandchildren and grandparents whom the children consider affectively closer and that of the grandchildren and other grandparents. For this purpose, I performed semi-structured interviews to 37 children between the ages of 10 and 12 and analysed the content of their speeches. I have noticed the existence of significant differences in the interactions established in the two groups previously described grandchildren perform activities centered on the children with the closest grandparents affectively but, with the other grandparents most do not develop any activity, only some develop activities centered on both. The grandchildren attach greater importance to the contact with the closest affectively grandparents. For the children interviewed, all grandparents represent the family. In general, the grandchildren consider having an extremely close relationship with their maternal grandparents because they spend more time with them. They learn behaviors, with the closest grandparents and practical skills with the other grandparents, a significant number of respondents mentions not learning anything from the other grandparents. They talk about children-centered issues, but they mainly teach all grandparents skills. Four profiles of children were defined, taking into account the quality of the relationship and the functional characteristics of the relationship with the grandparents and the role played by parents in the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren: the affective, the educators / transmitters, the disinterested and the auxiliary.

Abstract:
The AIDS pandemic has generated a large number of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in Swaziland, as it affects the reproductive age group. Most of the OVC are being cared for by their grandparents who are old, poor and suffer from degenerating diseases of old age. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the needs and support available for OVC under the care of grandparents in the informal settlements of Mbabane, Swaziland in order to develop guidelines for their care and support. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was conducted to identify the needs of the OVC and type of support provided by organizations for these children. Data was collected using unstructured and semi-structured interviews. The study was conducted in three phases each addressing a research objective. In the first phase which was to identify the needs of OVC, twelve grandparents who cared for OVC in the informal settlements participated. For the second phase seven managers of organizations that provide support to OVC in the informal settlements participated. The third phase was the development of guidelines by the researcher and validated by participants and experts. The study highlighted the needs of OVC, the nature of the existing support structure and type of support provided by organizations for these children. The findings revealed that the OVC have developmental support, protection support, psychosocial support and support for survival needs. The themes identified from the analysis of the type of support provided by organizations were developmental, partnership, protection, psychosocial and support for survival needs. The organizations' support was inconsistent and inadequate to meet these needs due to the large number of OVC. Some of the weaknesses of organizations were indicated as donor dependency and lack of coordination and collaboration among organizations. The study highlighted partnership as fundamental to the successful implementation of the guidelines.
